Hazard evaluation and operational cockpit display of ground-measured windshear data

Information transfer issues associated with the dissemination of wind shear alerts from the ground are studied. The two issues specifically addressed are the effectiveness of different cockpit presentations of ground-measured information and the assessment of the wind shear hazard from ground-based measurements. A pilot survey has produced an information base for study of crew-centered wind shear alert design. A part-task Boeing 767 'glass cockpit' simulation has provided useful data about modes of cockpit information presentation for both wind shear alert and ATC clearance delivery. Graphical map displays are observed to be exceptionally efficient for presentation of position-critical alerts, while some problems with text displays are identified. Problems associated with hazard assessment of ground-measured wind shear information are also identified.

Information theoretic comparisons of original and transformed data from Landsat MSS and TM

The dispersion and concentration of signal values in transformed data from the Landsat-4 MSS and TM instruments are analyzed using a communications theory approach. The definition of entropy of Shannon was used to quantify information, and the concept of mutual information was employed to develop a measure of information contained in several subsets of variables. Several comparisons of information content are made on the basis of the information content measure, including: system design capacities; data volume occupied by agricultural data; and the information content of original bands and Tasseled Cap variables. A method for analyzing noise effects in MSS and TM data is proposed.

Multi-Spectral Cloud Property Retrieval

Despite numerous studies to retrieve cloud properties using infrared measurements the information content of the data has not yet been fully exploited. In an effort to more fully utilize the information content of infrared measurements, we have developed a multi-spectral technique for retrieving effective cloud particle size, optical depth and effective cloud temperature. While applicable to all cloud types, we begin by validating our retrieval technique through analysis of MS spectral radiances obtained during the SUCCESS field campaign over the ARM SGP CART facility, and compare our retrieval product with lidar and MODIS Airborne Simulator (MAS) measurement results. The technique is then applied to the Nimbus-4 MS infrared spectral measurements to obtain global cloud information.

Mid-Latitude Atmospheric Variability Between 20-60 KM from Rocketsonde Measurements

The information obtained from deployment of instrumented meteorological rockets provides middle atmospheric data in a region that is difficult to measure by other means. In the last two decades, in-situ measurements of the middle atmosphere have become less frequent and only originate from a handful of locations. However, the value of these measurements continues to be proven through the validation of remote sensing techniques, support of other payloads sampling the region, and as importantly, the continued study of the rocket datasets with the details and trends that they hold. Wallops Island (37.8 N, 75.5 W) has one of the longest meteorological rocket data records available with relatively few system changes. Two particular periods from this record are studied: (1) January/February and (2) July/August, 1977. Both data sets consist of Super-Loki meteorological rockets with a Datasonde and Starute payload, which yield temperature and wind profiles. The January/February set consists of almost daily launches with days with multiple launches interspersed through January. In the July/August set, rockets were launched for thirty consecutive days at nearly the same time daily from Wallops Island. This campaign was immediately followed by sets of multiple launches with up to six launches per day separated by hours and in some cases minutes. The unique nature of the data allows a detailed examination of the atmosphere's short-term variability. These results are compared to the current views of middle atmospheric dynamics and turbulence from altitudes in the range of 20-60 km.

Comparison of the information contents of Landsat TM and MSS data

A communications-theory approach is taken to analyze the dispersion and concentration of signal values in various data spaces, irrespective of specific class membership. Entropy is used to quantify information, and mutual information is used to measure the information represented by subsets of spectral variables. Several different comparisons of information content are made. These include comparisons of system design capacities, of data volumes occupied by agricultural data in the spaces defined by original bands and by transformed spectral (Tasseled Cap) variables, of the information contents of original bands and Tasseled Cap variables, and of the information contents of TM and MSS for the given agricultural data sets. Also, the effects of sample size, scene content, and quantization level are examined.

High Temperature Material Properties Measurement Capabilities of the MSFC Electrostatic Levitation (ESL) Laboratory

The NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) electrostatic levitation (ESL) laboratory has a long history of providing materials research and thermophysical property data. The lab can measure thermophysical properties, such as density, surface tension, and viscosity of liquid materials, including elements, alloys, glasses, ceramics, and oxides. For improved measurement quality, the ESL lab also has an oxygen control system, which allows the oxygen partial pressure within the vacuum chamber to be measured and controlled, at elevated temperatures, over a wide range of partial pressures. The surface tension of metals is affected by even a small amount of adsorption of oxygen, and the presence of oxygen has been hypothesized as a likely cause for the large scatter seen in published surface tension data. This presentation will cover the MSFC ESL lab, its high temperature material properties measurement capabilities, and some information about measurements done on alloys relevant to additive manufacturing.

NASA/DOD Aerospace Knowledge Diffusion Research Project. XXIV - A general approach to measuring the value of aerospace information products and services

This paper discusses the various approaches to measuring the value of information, first defining the meanings of information, economics of information, and value. It concludes that no general model of measuring the value of information is possible and that the usual approaches, such as cost/benefit equations, have very limited applications. It also concludes that in specific contexts with given goals for newly developed products and services or newly acquired information, there is a basis for its objective valuation. The axioms and inputs for such a model are described and directions for further verification and analysis are proposed.

Thermophysical property data and safety information

Precision measurements of the properties of oxygen over a wide range of temperature and pressure are complete. The primary remaining effort, which is in progress, is the representation of these data in the most usable format such as tables, equations, diagrams, and computer programs. In addition, safety data are essential to proper design, operation, and failure analysis. All of the available information on oxygen safety is being reviewed, evaluated and indexed for quick retrieval through the NASA Aerospace Safety Research and Data Institute program. The availability of data, where the major gaps in data occur, and retrieval of bibliographic information are discussed.

The vector structure of active magnetic fields

Observations are needed to show the form of the strains introduced into the fields above the surface of the Sun. The longitudinal component alone does not provide the basic information, so that it has been necessary in the past to use the filamentary structure observed in H sub alpha to supplement the longitudinal information. Vector measurements provide the additional essential information to determine the strains, with the filamentary structure available as a check for consistency. It is to be expected, then, that vector measurements will permit a direct mapping of the strains imposed on the magnetic fields of active regions. It will be interesting to study the relation of those strains to the emergence of magnetic flux, flares, eruptive prominences, etc. In particular we may hope to study the relaxation of the strains via the dynamical nonequilibrium.

How Many Bits? Radiometric Resolution as a Factor in Obtaining Forest Information with Remotely Sensed Measurements

This viewgraph presentation reviews the findings of a study that asks is 8 bits enough to obtain forest information via remote sensing with radiometric resolution. It was concluded that while there were differences in the varying resolution datasets, there was no clear evidence that increasing the quantization above 8 bits was a benefit for forestry monitoring.

Determination of the ozone profile from the outgoing thermal emission

Problems of the information content of measuring the spectral and angular distribution of the outgoing thermal emission of the atmosphere-earth system in the 9.6 mm ozone absorption band are discussed. Two methods (nadir and limb) of remote measurement are considered. Information data obtained are evaluated according to three systems. Effectiveness of the regression interpretation method using the data of nadir and limb measurements is shown.

Snow Microphysical Retrieval from the NASA D3R Radar During ICE-POP 2018

A method is developed to use both polarimetric and dual-frequency radar measurements to retrieve microphysical properties of falling snow. It is applied to the Ku- and Ka-band measurements of the NASA dual-polarization, dual-frequency Doppler radar (D3R) obtained during the International Collaborative Experiments for PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic winter games (ICE-POP 2018) field campaign and incorporates the Atmospheric Radiative Transfer Simulator (ARTS) microwave singles cattering property database for oriented particles. The retrieval uses optimal estimation to solve for several parameters that describe the particle size distribution (PSD), relative contribution of pristine, aggregate, and rimed ice species, and the orientation distribution along an entire radial simultaneously. Examination of Jacobian matrices and averaging kernels shows that the dual-wavelength ratio (DWR) measurements provide information regarding the characteristic particle size, and to a lesser extent, the rime fraction and shape parameter of the size distribution, whereas the polarimetric measurements provide information regarding the mass fraction of pristine particles and their characteristic size and orientation distribution. Thus, by combining the dual-frequency and polarimetric measurements, some ambiguities can be resolved that should allow a better determination of the PSD and bulk microphysical properties (e.g., snowfall rate) than can be retrieved from single-frequency polarimetric measurements or dual-frequency, single-polarization measurements. The D3R ICE-POP retrievals were validated using Precipitation Imaging Package (PIP) and Pluvio weighing gauge measurements taken nearby at the May Hills ground site. The PIP measures the snow PSD directly, and its measurements can be used to derived the snowfall rate (volumetric and water equivalent), mean volume-weighted particle size, and effective density, as well as particle aspect ratio and orientation. Four retrieval experiments were performed to evaluate the utility of different measurement combinations: Kuonly, DWR-only, Ku-pol, and All-obs. In terms of correlation, the volumetric snowfall rate (r D 0:95) and snow water equivalent rate (r D 0:92) were best retrieved by the Ku-pol method, while the DWR-only method had the lowest magnitude bias for these parameters (-31% and -8 %, respectively). The methods that incorporated DWR also had the best correlation to particle size (r D 0:74 and r D 0:71 for DWR-only and All-obs, respectively), although none of the methods retrieved density particularly well (r D 0:43 for Allobs). The ability of the measurements to retrieve mean aspect ratio was also inconclusive, although the polarimetric methods (Ku-pol and All-obs) had reduced biases and mean absolute error (MAE) relative to the Ku-only and DWR-only methods. The significant biases in particle size and snowfall rate appeared to be related to biases in the measured DWR, emphasizing the need for accurate DWR measurements and frequent calibration in future D3R deployments.

Fuzzy geometry, entropy, and image information

Presented here are various uncertainty measures arising from grayness ambiguity and spatial ambiguity in an image, and their possible applications as image information measures. Definitions are given of an image in the light of fuzzy set theory, and of information measures and tools relevant for processing/analysis e.g., fuzzy geometrical properties, correlation, bound functions and entropy measures. Also given is a formulation of algorithms along with management of uncertainties for segmentation and object extraction, and edge detection. The output obtained here is both fuzzy and nonfuzzy. Ambiguity in evaluation and assessment of membership function are also described.
