Improved high power/high frequency inductor

A toroidal core is mounted on an alignment disc having uniformly distributed circumferential notches or holes therein. Wire is then wound about the toroidal core in a uniform pattern defined by the notches or holes. Prior to winding, the wire may be placed within shrink tubing. The shrink tubing is then wound about the alignment disc and core and then heat-shrunk to positively retain the wire in the uniform position on the toroidal core.

Negative coupled inductors for polyphase choppers

A technique for negatively coupling the outputs of polyphase choppers is disclosed, wherein the output inductance of each phase is divided into two windings, and each winding is negatively coupled to a corresponding winding of a neighboring phase. In a preferred embodiment for a three-phase chopper circuit, the output inductance of phase A is divided into windings 100 and 102, the output inductance of phase B is divided into windings 110 and 112, and the output inductance of phase C is divided into windings 120 and 122. Pairs of windings 100 and 110, 112 and 120, and 102 and 122 are respectively disposed in transformers arranged for negatively coupling the windings of each pair.

Tunable anisotropy of co-based nanocomposites for magnetic field sensing and inductor applications

A method includes producing an amorphous precursor to a nanocomposite, performing devitrification of the amorphous precursor, forming, based on the devitrification, the nanocomposite comprising an induced magnetic anisotropy, and for a first portion of the nanocomposite, determining a desired value of a magnetic permeability of the first portion, tuning, based on the desired value, the induced magnetic anisotropy for the first portion, and adjusting, based on the tuning of the induced magnetic anisotropy of the first portion, a first magnetic permeability value of the first portion of the nanocomposite, wherein the first magnetic permeability value is different from a second magnetic permeability value for a second portion of the nanocomposite.

High resistivity iron-based, thermally stable magnetic material for on-chip integrated inductors

An on-chip magnetic structure includes a palladium activated seed layer and a substantially amorphous magnetic material disposed onto the palladium activated seed layer. The substantially amorphous magnetic material includes nickel in a range from about 50 to about 80 atomic % (at. %) based on the total number of atoms of the magnetic material, iron in a range from about 10 to about 50 at. % based on the total number of atoms of the magnetic material, and phosphorous in a range from about 0.1 to about 30 at. % based on the total number of atoms of the magnetic material. The magnetic material can include boron in a range from about 0.1 to about 5 at. % based on the total number of atoms of the magnetic material.

Tunable anisotropy of co-based nanocomposites for magnetic field sensing and inductor applications

A method includes producing an amorphous precursor to a nanocomposite, the amorphous precursor comprising a material that is substantially without crystals not exceeding 20% volume fraction; performing devitrification of the amorphous precursor, wherein the devitrification comprises a process of crystallization; forming, based on the devitrification, the nanocomposite with nano-crystals that contains an induced magnetic anisotropy; tuning, based on one or more of composition, temperature, configuration, and magnitude of stress applied during annealing and modification, the magnetic anisotropy of the nanocomposite; and adjusting, based on the tuned magnetic anisotropy, a magnetic permeability of the nanocomposite.

Transformer with integral inductor

In accordance with one embodiment is a transformer with a core comprising a perimeter portion and central intervening portion. The central intervening portion is separated from the perimeter portion by air gaps, creating an opening on either side of the intervening portion. A primary winding and secondary winding are wound around the central intervening portion of the core. The primary winding is capable of electromagnetic interaction with the secondary winding. A pair of ferrite members arranged outward from a central axis of the central intervening portion of the core and increases a series inductance with the primary winding. In accordance with another aspect of the disclosure, each ferrite member may have an air gap associated with the core to facilitate heat dissipation from the transformer.

Inductive Position Sensor

An inductive position sensor uses three independent inductors inductively coupled by a common medium such as air. First and second inductors are separated by a fixed distance with the first inductor's axial core and second inductor's axial core maintained parallel to one another. A third inductor is disposed between the first and second inductors with the third inductor's axial core being maintained parallel to those of the first and second inductors. The combination of the first and second inductors are configured for relative movement with the third inductor's axial core remaining parallel to those of the first and second inductors as distance changes from the third inductor to each of the first inductor and second inductor. An oscillating current can be supplied to at least one of the three inductors, while voltage induced in at least one of the three inductors not supplied with the oscillating current is measured.
