Mitigation of Leakage and Water Ingress for a Promising Phase Change Material (PCM) Containing Polythylene Glycol (PEG): Preprint

A promising and cost-effective phase change material (PCM) containing polyethylene glycol (PEG) 600, 800, and/or 1000 has been synthesized. It is shape stabilized using a sol-gel method and displays promising thermal properties. These properties make the PCMs good candidates for thermal batteries and other thermal energy storage applications in the building sector. However, PEG leakage is observed at elevated temperatures, and due to the hygroscopic nature of PEG, moisture ingress is also observed, which can have a significant effect on performance and durability. Thus, we have developed hydrophobic coatings to prevent PEG leakage and mitigate moisture ingress. The selected approach involves a secondary sol-gel process during which a thin layer formulated with hydrophobic precursors is deposited onto the surface of the PCM samples. Several coating formulations have been investigated, including formulations composed of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), diethoxy(dimethyl)silane (DEDMS), triethoxymethylsilane (TEMS), and n- octyltriethoxysilane (OTES). We find that this is effective at increasing hydrophobicity of the PCM substrates. It also decreases substrate leakage.

Corrigendum to “Engineering Pseudomonas putida KT2440 for efficient ethylene glycol utilization” [Metab. Eng. 48 (2018) 197–207]

The sequence of the promoter used to drive expression of glcDEF operon in the engineered strain MFL185 in the original article was incorrect. As described here, we performed additional experiments that indicate expression of this operon was increased in MFL185, as intended. Ultimately, this error is immaterial with respect to the findings and conclusions reported in the original article.

Correlation of Processing and Structure in an Ethylene‐Glycol Side‐Chain Modified Polythiophene via Combined X‐Ray Scattering and 4D Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy

The results of a combined grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS) and 4D scanning transmission microscopy (4D-STEM) analysis of the effects of thermal processing on poly(3[2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethoxy]-methylthiophene-2,5-diyl) are reported, a conjugated semiconducting polymer used as the active layer in organic electrochemical transistor devices. GIWAXS provides a measure of overall crystallinity in the film, while 4D-STEM produces real-space maps of the morphology and orientation of individual crystallites along with their spatial extent and distribution. The sensitivity of the 4D-STEM detector allows for collection of electron diffraction patterns at each position in an image scan while limiting the imparted electron dose to below the damage threshold. In conclusion, the effects of heat treatment on the distribution and type of crystallites present in the films is determined.

Phase diagrams and microstructures of aqueous short alkyl chain polyethylene glycol ether carboxylate and carboxylic acid triblock surfactant solutions

The surfactant C 8 Eo 8 CH 2 COOH (Akypo LF2) and its salts have a small hydrophobic and a significantly longer hydrophilic part. As a consequence, there must be a significant steric constraint, once these surfactant molecules form micelles. In addition, the partially charged headgroups should bring some additional fine-tuning via electrostatic interactions to this "essentially non-ionic" surfactant. Experiments: Phase diagrams of binary mixtures of water and C 8 Eo 8 CH 2 COOH are established over large concentration and temperature ranges, also at different pHs and in the presence of sodium and calcium ions. Surface tensions and osmotic pressures are measured to understand the systems. To evaluate the microstructures, also Dynamic Light Scattering and Small-Angle X-ray Scattering are performed.

Choline Fluoride-Ethylene glycol deep eutectic solvent mixture – Synthesis and physicochemical properties

A critical factor in achieving tunability in DESs is varying the type of hydrogen bond acceptors (HBAs) and donors (HBDs). Choline halides (ChX), such as ChCl and ChBr, have been studied to investigate the effect of the choline anion on DESs. However, ChF-based DESs have been underrepresented in scientific research. ChF has excellent potential, such as high electron affinity, ionization potential, and strong hydrogen bond interactions. Moreover, ChF-based DES can lead to a deeper understanding of DESs due to the NMR-active 19F nuclear spin nature. We report the first synthesis and characterization of choline fluoride-EG (1:2, ChF:EG) DES, which we named “EthalineF.” We studied this mixture using various spectroscopic techniques, including NMR, FT-IR, Raman, and UV–vis spectroscopies. Polarity, density, viscosity, and conductivity measurements were collected as well. Transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS) was used to study the solvation dynamics of EthalineF. 19F NMR indicated that some fluoride anions (~15%) are coordinated to the choline cation. In EthalineF, the new type of observed fluoride anions is proposed to be a tight-binding choline-fluoride ion pair. Further, EthalineF has a larger solvodynamic radius than Ethaline. This can explain the lower conductivity for EthalineF compared to Ethaline despite the higher fluidity and solvation dynamics for EthalineF.
