Merefa Community Microgrid: Supporting Distributed Energy Resource Deployment in Ukraine

A conceptual design is described for a community microgrid in Ukraine. Microgrid resources include solar photovoltaics, battery energy storage, and conventional natural gas fueled reciprocating engine generators. The conceptual architecture was informed by the microgrid developer, NREL subject matter experts, and the application of REopt, an NREL-developed software tool created for identification of least-cost combination of resources for achieving cost savings, resilience, and renewable energy goals. This fact sheet is a summary of a previously published technical report; see NREL/TP-7A40-89527, which includes conceptual architecture, estimates of key summary financial metrics, and sequence of operations.

Medical Imaging Equipment Energy Efficiency

The energy use of medical imaging equipment (MIE) in healthcare facilities is estimated to be about 5% of total site energy use. MIE energy use is only expected to increase as technology advances and more patients seek services from MIE, enabling more facilities to install additional MIE. Healthcare organizations need reliable information regarding comprehensive energy use or lifetime energy costs with which to make energy-efficient MIE procurement decisions, and there are currently no MIE energy or efficiency standards in the United States (U.S.). This fact sheet provides background on MIE energy consumption, key terms, and guidance on why and how to meter MIE, helping stakeholders make informed decisions to enhance their facility's performance.

Sustainable Port Operations: Powered by NREL

Seaports are vital economic hubs that allow the United States to compete on a global scale. But the heavy vehicles and cargo equipment that enable their operations also emit harmful air pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions. For nearly two decades, National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) researchers have worked toward comprehensive seaport decarbonization. They fuse world-class analysis with deep vehicle and transportation systems knowledge to guide strategic deployment of low- and zero-emissions vehicles, charging and refueling infrastructure, and grid improvements. Together, these capabilities can enable sustainable port operations. This fact sheet outlines major seaport and airport decarbonization capabilities across the laboratory, including: fleet research, energy data, and insights for decarbonization; comprehensive hydrogen infrastructure deployment; optimized charging through grid integration; strategic blueprinting for clean, optimized technology deployment; and integrating diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility considerations into decarbonization efforts.

Best Practices for Plug Load Management Using a Building Energy Management System

The University of California San Diego (UCSD) successfully integrated PLCs with their BEMS, which resulted in 66% energy savings over one week across 25 plug loads (K. Chia et al. 2023). UCSD documented each step of this effort, highlighting best practices along the way, in their 10-page brief, "Best Practices for Plug Load Management Using a Building Energy Management System" (also referred to as "brief" in this document). This fact sheet provides highlights and key takeaways from UCSD's brief. The reader is encouraged to read UCSD's full brief if they wish to move forward with implementing PLC integration with their BEMS.

What Is Power System Curtailment?

Curtailment is the intentional reduction of instantaneous power from non- dispatchable variable renewable energy (VRE) resources like wind and solar photovoltaics relative to what would naturally be available from the wind and the sun. This curtailed energy is the difference between the total available energy and actual production. This fact sheet provides a summary of curtailment in power systems and presents selected insights into specific ways in which curtailment is implemented by a selection of System Operators.

The Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska: Advancing Clean, Resilient, and Sovereign Energy

The Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska (ITKN) is a federally recognized Native American Tribe located along the Missouri River on the border of northeast Kansas and southeastern Nebraska. There are over 800 residents (Tribal citizens and non-Tribal) who live on the reservation, as well as more than 500 people who visit or work on the reservation on a daily basis. The ITKN faces many energy challenges, including rising service costs and dozens of power outages annually that impact resident well-being and business activities on Tribal lands. Power service issues are made more challenging by the remoteness of the reservation, which is 20 miles from the nearest town. Despite this, the ITKN has a long history of cultural and economic resilience: Local self-reliance, environmental stewardship, respecting the carrying capacity of the land, and strengthening the community are Tribal communities' traditional strengths. Long-term energy goals for the ITKN are centered around achieving energy sovereignty. Priority actions include: (1) Establishing a Tribal Utility Authority (TUA) to promote social welfare and community development.; (2) Deploying renewable community microgrids with ground-mount solar arrays and sustainable energy storage systems to advance energy sovereignty, resilience, and reliability. To advance these goals, the ITKN partnered with the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) Communities LEAP (Local Energy Action Program) pilot. From August 2022 to March 2024, the ITKN community coalition collaborated with technical assistance providers at DOE's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and Sandia National Laboratories to evaluate TUA planning needs and microgrid deployment scenarios. This fact sheet provides an overview of the results and outcomes from the Communities LEAP technical assistance process.
