Cs retention and diffusion in C-S-H at different Ca/Si ratio

Cement and concrete are commonly used in the construction of repository sites for radioactive wastes. The correct isolation of those contaminants requires good adsorption and low diffusion rates. Both parameters are highly affected by many factors, such as pH, temperature or composition. The large variability of experimental conditions and formulations makes it extraordinarily difficult to tackle the influence of each of them independently in experimental samples. To this effect, molecular dynamics simulations have been employed in this study to investigate the role of the composition in the capacity to retain Cs and diffusivity of these ions in calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) gel pores. The results indicate that the adsorption of Cs ions is worsened at high Ca/Si ratios due to a lower interaction of the cations with the C-S-H surface, while hydrophilicity of the C-S-H nanopore rises, resulting in higher long-range ordering and lower diffusion coefficients of Cs ions.

Fission neutron activations of stainless steel and its corresponding elemental components

Characterizing neutron activation of stainless steel is a critical task for many applications, and yet little activation data is available for this alloy. To address the need, a series of neutron activation experiments have been performed using the Flattop critical assembly at the National Criticality Experiments Research Center. Several experimental conditions were probed for complete understanding of the neutron environment, including foil composition and position within the assembly. The experimental results reported here will aid in the production of stainless steel benchmarks for a range of nuclear data applications including those used in nuclear forensics analysis.

Nonlinear gyrokinetic modelling of high confinement negative triangularity plasmas

Abstract Nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations correctly predict particle as well as ion and electron energy fluxes of high confinement plasmas with a negative triangularity cross sectional shape, showing that core transport in these plasmas is well described by standard gyrokinetic models. Experimentally inferred power balance fluxes are mostly reproduced within one standard deviation across a wide portion of the minor radius. Experimental conditions are reproduced by ion scale simulations, without the need to include density and temperature profile curvature effects. The experimental case is used as baseline to predict that the non-dimensional confinement scaling in negative triangularity plasmas increases strongly with plasma current while slightly degrading at increasing normalized pressure and decreasing collisionality. Recent experiments showed that low toroidal rotation negatively impacts confinement; consistent with the experiment, simulations predict that low rotational shear significantly affects confinement unless the plasma effective charge is maintained above a minimum level. Core confinement is predicted to significantly degrade in low aspect ratio devices.

Equilibration of the planar modes of ultracold two-dimensional ion crystals in a Penning trap

In this work, planar thermal equilibration is studied using direct numerical simulations of ultracold two-dimensional ion crystals in a Penning trap with a rotating wall. The large magnetic field of the trap splits the modes that describe in-plane motion of the ions into two branches: high-frequency cyclotron modes dominated by kinetic energy and low-frequency E × B modes dominated by potential energy associated with thermal position displacements. Using an eigenmode analysis we extract the equilibration rate between these two branches as a function of the ratio of the frequencies that characterize the two branches and observe this equilibration rate to be exponentially suppressed as the ratio increases. Under experimental conditions relevant for current work at NIST, the predicted equilibration time is orders of magnitude longer than any relevant experimental timescales. We also study the coupling rate dependence on the initial energy of the planar modes and the number of ions. In addition, we show how increasing the rotating wall strength improves crystal stability. These details of in-plane mode dynamics help set the stage for developing strategies to efficiently cool the in-plane modes and improve the performance of single plane ion crystals for quantum information processing.

Wave-packet manipulation of He Rydberg states by a seeded free-electron laser

We report a two-dimensional pump-control-probe spectroscopic study of the dynamics of singly excited He Rydberg-state wave packets with a seeded extreme ultraviolet (XUV) free-electron laser (FEL) source. A pair of coherent XUV pulses, defined by their coarse time separation and relative phase, created and manipulated the wave packets. The He atoms were postionized by infrared (IR) pulses, and the ion yield was measured as a function of XUV phase and IR arrival time. We tagged and sorted the relative phase of the XUV pulse pair on a single-shot basis by fitting each FEL spectrum with a suitable function that accounts for nonidealities of the XUV pulse pairs, associated with the seeding process; more generally, the fit returns the time-dependent electric field of the FEL spectra. The experimental two-dimensional maps of ion yields, measured as a function of IR (probe) delay and of XUV (pump-control) phase, were compared with the solution of the first-order time-dependent Schrödinger equation for this field. Despite the fact that the experimental conditions imply strong excitation, beyond the approximations of first-order perturbation theory, the simulated map satisfactorily reproduces the experimental one for temporally well-separated pulses. We show that by selecting data at appropriate values of pump-control phase, we enhance or suppress the amplitude of chosen wave-packet components consisting of two or more Rydberg states. When the temporal overlap of the pulse pair cannot be neglected, the phase reconstruction is underdetermined, and we provide a simplified comparison between data and simulations.
