Low and moderate x gluon contribution to exclusive Compton scattering processes

We revisit the high energy semi-classical description of the exclusive processes DVCS, TCS, and Double DVCS by explicitly keeping track of the Feynman x dependence in both the hard and the hadronic matrix elements. This is achieved by a modification of the standard shock wave approximation to derive the effective Feynman rules, which leads to a generic expression on which we then perform a partial twist expansion to get rid of quantities suppressed by the proper physical scales. We obtain a compact factorized master formula that can be used to investigate the Bjorken limit at leading twist. In particular, we recover the full one-loop result in the collinear limit for pure gluon exchange with the target. Finally, we discuss the subtleties in taking the simultaneous collinear and small x limit.

Drivers and ecological impacts of a wildfire outbreak in the southern Appalachian Mountains after decades of fire exclusion

During one of the warmest and driest droughts of the last century, the southern Appalachian Mountains experienced a regional outbreak of over a dozen large wildfires in late fall of 2016. We provide a synthesis of long-term forest changes leading up to the 2016 wildfires, examine the climatic setting and patterns of burn severity in relationship to topography, and discuss the ecological and management implications of these and future fires. During the pre- and post-European settlement periods, frequent low- and mixed-severity wildfires interacted with complex topographic gradients and maintained heterogenous landscapes dominated by several species of oak (Quercus spp.), pine (Pinus spp.), and the American chestnut (Castanea dentata). Land-use changes associated with European settlement, loss of the American chestnut, and 20th century fire exclusion resulted in large scale shifts towards mesic, fire-intolerant species (i.e. mesophication). Wildfire activity began increasing in the early 1980s, but most fires in the region are small (<1,000 ha). In Fall of 2016, deciduous tree leaf fall occurred concurrently with a period of anomalously dry and warm weather, creating ideal conditions for fire ignition and spread. Thousands of ignitions across the region strained suppression resources and eight fires grew to greater than 5,000 ha. The 2016 fires were larger and burned more area than in the previous three decades combined. In one unique landscape setting, the Chimney Tops 2 Fire, a synoptic wind event drove extreme fire behavior and burned large, high-severity patches resulting in devastating effects in the wildland urban interface. However, immediate post-fire burn severity mosaics for other fires were composed primarily of low- (73 %) and moderate-severity (21 %) fire effects. High-severity fire comprised only 6 % of the area burned, and occurred mostly on steep upper slopes and ridges on south-facing aspects, reflecting the importance of bottom-up topographic drivers in this region. Although the fires will likely enhance biodiversity by restoring fire-dependent species and creating early seral habitat, invasions of non-native plant species, delayed mortality of mature pines and oaks, and rapid re-sprouting of pyrophyllic shrubs pose significant management challenges. Although similar large fire outbreaks may become more common under future climatic conditions, they are unlikely to reverse the effects of mesophication and significantly alter forest dynamics at broad spatial scales. Furthermore, the 2016 fires exposed the vulnerability of the region to wildfire during acute fall drought and demonstrate the potential ecological effects of future wildfires in mixed pine-hardwood landscapes of the southern Appalachians.

Unveiling the two-proton halo character of 17 Ne: Exclusive measurement of quasi-free proton-knockout reactions

The proton drip-line nucleus 17 Ne is investigated experimentally in order to determine its two-proton halo character. A fully exclusive measurement of the 17 Ne (p, 2p) 16 F* 15 O+p quasi-free one-proton knockout reaction has been performed at GSI at around 500 MeV/nucleon beam energy. All particles resulting from the scattering process have been detected. The relevant reconstructed quantities are the angles of the two protons scattered in quasi-elastic kinematics, the decay of 16 F into 15 O (including γ decays from excited states) and a proton, as well as the 15 O+p relative-energy spectrum and the 16 F momentum distributions. The latter two quantities allow an independent and consistent determination of the fractions of l = 0 and l = 2 motion of the valence protons in 17 Ne. With a resulting relatively small l = 0 component of only around 35(3)%, it is concluded that 17 Ne exhibits a rather modest halo character only. The quantitative agreement of the two values deduced from the energy spectrum and the momentum distributions supports the theoretical treatment of the calculation of momentum distributions after quasi-free knockout reactions at high energies by taking into account distortions based on the Glauber theory. Moreover, the experimental data allow the separation of valence-proton knockout and knockout from the 15O core. The latter process contributes with 11.8(3.1) mb around 40% to the total proton-knockout cross section of 30.3(2.3) mb, which explains previously reported contradicting conclusions derived from inclusive cross sections.

Search for exclusive Higgs and Z boson decays to ωγ and Higgs boson decays to K*γ with the ATLAS detector

Searches for the exclusive decays of the Higgs boson to an ω meson and a photon or a Κ * meson and a photon can probe flavour-conserving and flavour-violating Higgs boson couplings to light quarks, respectively. Searches for these decays, along with the analogous Z boson decay to an ω meson and a photon, are performed with a pp collision data sample corresponding to integrated luminosities of up to 134 fb -1 collected at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The obtained 95% confidence-level upper limits on the respective branching fractions are $\mathscr{B}$(H → ω$\gamma$) < 5.5 x 10 -4 , $\mathscr{B}$(H → Κ *$\gamma$) < 2.2 x 10 -4 and $\mathscr{B}$(Z → ω$\gamma$) 3.9 x 10 -6 . The limits for H → ω$\gamma$ and Z → ω$\gamma$ are 370 times and 140 times the Standard Model expected values, respectively. The result for Z → ω$\gamma$ corresponds to a two-orders-of-magnitude improvement over the limit obtained by the DELPHI experiment at LEP.

Searches for exclusive decays of the Higgs boson into D*$\gamma$ and of the Z boson into D 0 $\gamma$ and K$_{s}^{0}$$\gamma$ can probe flavour-violating Higgs boson and Z boson couplings to light quarks. Searches for these decays are performed with a pp collision data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 136.3 fb -1 collected at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13TeV between 2016–2018 with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. In the D*$\gamma$ and D 0 $\gamma$ channels, the observed (expected) 95% confidence-level upper limits on the respective branching fractions are B(H→D*$\gamma$) < 1.0(1.2)×10 -3 , B(Z→D 0 $\gamma$) < 4.0(3.4)×10 -6 , while the corresponding results in the K$_{s}^{0}$$\gamma$ channel are B(Z→K$_{s}^{0}$$\gamma$) < 3.1(3.0)×10 -6 .

Gluon saturation effects in exclusive heavy vector meson photoproduction

We study exclusive J/ψ and ϒ photoproduction for proton and Pb targets in the high-energy limit, with the energy dependence computed using the linear Balitsky–Fadin–Kuraev–Lipatov and the nonlinear Balitsky–Kovchegov evolution equations. The difference between these two evolution equations can be directly attributed to gluon saturation physics. We find that for proton targets there is no difference between the two approaches at the energies of the currently available data, while for Pb targets in J/ψ production the data shows a clear preference for the evolution with gluon saturation.

Projective imaging of high-energy nuclei via coherent exclusive vector meson production in electron-nucleus collisions

One of the major goals of modern nuclear experiments is to study the distributions of gluons inside nuclei at high energy. A key measurement is the coherent exclusive vector meson (VM) production in diffractive electron-nucleus collisions, where the gluon spatial distribution inside the nucleus can be obtained through a Fourier transform of the squared nuclear momentum transfer (|t|) distribution. This research aims to overcome the two main obstacles of the |t| measurement: limited precision in measuring |t| arising from the momentum resolution of the outgoing electron and the overwhelming incoherent background. We demonstrate that by measuring the projected |t| distribution along the direction perpendicular to the electron scattering plane, the effect of the outgoing electron’s momentum resolution can be effectively mitigated, and the diffractive pattern is largely restored. Furthermore, we propose to measure the angular distribution of the VM’s decay daughters to statistically remove the incoherent background.

Co 2 Mo 6 S 8 Catalyzes Nearly Exclusive Electrochemical Nitrate Conversion to Ammonia with Enzyme-like Activity

Electrocatalytic nitrate to ammonia conversion is a key reaction for energy and environmental sustainability. This reaction involves complex multi electron and proton transfer steps, and is impeded by the lack of catalyst for promoting both reactivity and ammonia selectivity. Here, we demonstrate active motifs based on the Chevrel phase Co 2 Mo 6 S 8 exhibit an enzyme-like high turnover frequency of ~95.1 s –1 for nitrate electroreduction to ammonia. We reveal strong synergy of multiple binding sites on this catalyst, such that the ligand effect of Co steers H ad* toward hydrogenation other than hydrogen evolution, the ensemble effect of Co, and the spatial confinement effect that promote the full hydrogenation of NO x to ammonia without N–N coupling. The catalyst exhibits almost exclusive ammonia conversion with a Faradaic efficiency of 97.1% and ammonia yielding rate of 115.5 mmol·g cat –1 ·h –1 in neutral electrolytes. The high activity was also confirmed in electrolytes with dilute nitrate and high chloride concentrations.

Polarity-Tolerant Chloride Binding in Foldamer Capsules by Programmed Solvent-Exclusion

Persistent anion binding in a wide range of solution environments is a key challenge that continues to motivate and demand new strategies in synthetic receptor design. Though strong binding in low-polarity solvents has become routine, our ability to maintain high affinities in high-polarity solvents has not yet reached the standard set by nature. Anions are bound and transported regularly in aqueous environments by proteins that use secondary and tertiary structure to isolate anion binding sites from water. Inspired by this principle of solvent exclusion, we created a sequence-defined foldameric capsule whose global minimum conformation displays a helical folded state and is preorganized for 1:1 anion complexation. The high stability of the folded geometry and its ability to exclude solvent were supported by solid-state and solution phase studies. This capsule then withstood a 4-fold increase in solvent dielectric constant (εr) from dichloromethane (9) to acetonitrile (36) while maintaining a high and solvent-independent affinity of 10 5 M –1 ; ΔG ~ 28 kJ mol –1 . This behavior is unusual. More typical of solvent-dependent behavior, Cl – affinities were seen to plummet in control compounds, such as aryl-triazole macrocycles and pentads, with their solvent-exposed binding cavities susceptible to dielectric screening. Finally, dimethyl sulfoxide denatures the foldamer by putative solvent binding, which then lowers the foldamer’s Cl – affinity to normal levels. Furthermore, the design of this capsule demonstrates a new prototype for the development of potent receptors that can operate in polar solvents and has the potential to help manage hydrophilic anions present in the hydrosphere and biosphere.

Increased abundance of a common scavenger affects allocation of carrion but not efficiency of carcass removal in the Fukushima Exclusion Zone

Abstract The 2011 nuclear accident in Fukushima, Japan caused the evacuation of > 100,000 people and prompted studies on environmental impacts of radiological contamination. However, few researchers have explored how the human evacuation has affected ecosystem processes. Despite contamination, one common scavenger (wild boar, Sus scrofa ) is 2–3× more abundant inside the Fukushima Exclusion Zone (FEZ). Shifts in abundance of some scavenger species can have cascading effects on ecosystems, so our objective was to investigate impacts of the evacuation and the resulting increase in wild boar on vertebrate scavenger communities. We deployed cameras at 300 carcasses in the FEZ and a nearby inhabited area, and quantified carcass fate, scavenger species, and detection/persistence times. We also tested effects of carcass size and habitat on scavenger community composition and efficiency by balancing trials across two carcass sizes and habitats in each zone. Overall scavenger richness and carcass removal rates (73%) were similar in the FEZ and inhabited area, but species-specific carcass removal rates and occurrence differed between zones. Wild boar removed substantially more carcasses inside the FEZ, with implications for nutrient and contaminant distribution. Our results suggest carcass size affects scavenging dynamics more than human activity or habitat, and abundance changes of common scavengers can influence carrion resource allocation.

The role of nonequilibrium LO phonons, Pauli exclusion, and intervalley pathways on the relaxation of hot carriers in InGaAs/InGaAsP multi-quantum-wells

Under continuous-wave laser excitation in a lattice-matched In 0.53 Ga 0.47 As/In 0.8 Ga 0.2 As 0.44 P 0.56 multi-quantum-well (MQW) structure, the carrier temperature extracted from photoluminescence rises faster for 405 nm compared with 980 nm excitation, as the injected carrier density increases. Ensemble Monte Carlo simulation of the carrier dynamics in the MQW system shows that this carrier temperature rise is dominated by nonequilibrium LO phonon effects, with the Pauli exclusion having a significant effect at high carrier densities. Further, we find a significant fraction of carriers reside in the satellite L-valleys for 405 nm excitation due to strong intervalley transfer, leading to a cooler steady-state electron temperature in the central valley compared with the case when intervalley transfer is excluded from the model. Good agreement between experiment and simulation has been shown, and detailed analysis has been presented. This study expands our knowledge of the dynamics of the hot carrier population in semiconductors, which can be applied to further limit energy loss in solar cells.

Microscopic modeling of direct pre-equilibrium emission: Impact on exclusive and inclusive (n, x n) and fission channels

We report on a microscopic modeling of the first order of multistep direct emission based on one phonon excitations, given by the QRPA model, and an effective in-medium nucleon nucleon interaction, described within the JLM folding model. The results of our coupled channels framework for deformed target are illustrated in the case of low energy discrete state excitations in 152 Sm. Pre-equilibrium predictions and their impact on inclusive and exclusive (n,xn) cross sections and fission cross sections are discussed for actinides. We discuss the importance of i) collective excitations to describe the neutron emission spectra and of ii) spin distribution of the residual nucleus formed after the neutron pre-equilibrium emission, that is a key ingredient to model the residual nucleus decay.

Exclusive $J/ψ$ photoproduction on nuclei

Motivated by the recent experimental developments, the Pom-CQM model of the γ+N → J/ψ+N reaction of Lee et al. [Eur. Phys. J. A. 58, 252 (2022)] and Sakinah et al. [Phys. Rev. C. 109, 065204 (2024)] has been applied to predict the exclusive J/ψ photo-production on nuclei (A). Within the multiple scattering theory, the calculations have been performed by including the impulse amplitude $T^{\textrm{IMP}}_{J/ψA,γA}$ and the J/ψ-nucleus final state interaction (FSI) amplitude $T^{\textrm{FSI}}_{J/ψA,γA}$. For the deuteron target, $T^{\textrm{IMP}}_{J/ψd,γd}$ is calculated exactly using the wave function generated from the realistic nucleon-nucleon potentials. Here, it is found that, near the threshold region, the J/ψ photoproduction cross sections depend sensitively on the d-state of the deuteron wave function. The FSI amplitude $T^{\textrm{FSI}}_{J/ψA,γA}$ is calculated using the first-order optical potential constructed from the J/ψ-N scattering amplitude generated from the employed Pom-CQM model. It turns out that the FSI has significant effects in the large momentum-transfer region. By using the conventional fixed scatter approximation (FSA) and the nuclear form factors from the variational Monte-Carlo (VMC) calculations of Lonardoni et al. [Phys. Rev.C. 96, 024326 (2017)], the cross sections of the J/ψ photo-production on 4 He, 16 O, and 40 Ca are also predicted for future experimental investigations at JLab and EIC.

Off forward non- s -channel helicity conserving contributions to exclusive vector quarkonium production from the spin dependent BFKL Pomeron

A novel contribution to off forward, exclusive vector quarkonium production, γ(*)+p → V+p, at high energy is derived which corresponds to a t-channel exchange of a Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) hard Pomeron, with a helicity flip of the proton. This “spin-dependent BFKL Pomeron” is required in a consistent expansion in powers of the momentum transfer t ≈−Δ$^{2}_{⊥}$ beyond first order. The spin-dependent Pomeron violates s-channel helicity conservation at O(Δ$^{2}_{⊥}$), and beyond. Expanding to leading twist only, it corresponds to generalized parton distributions E g (x,t) for vanishing skewness. We derive explicit expressions for the eikonal BFKL amplitudes, to all orders in dipole size times momentum transfer, for all helicity configurations of the particles in the initial and final states. We also provide numerical estimates of the helicity flip two gluon exchange amplitude at moderate x from a light cone quark model of the proton. The spin dependent BFKL Pomeron could, in principle, be discovered via double spin asymmetries in e+p → e+p+J/ψ with a transversely polarized proton and longitudinally polarized electron in the initial state.

Measurement of exclusive 𝜋 + -argon interactions using ProtoDUNE-SP

We present the measurement of 𝜋 + -argon inelastic cross sections using the ProtoDUNE single-phase liquid argon time projection chamber in the incident 𝜋 + kinetic energy range of 500–800 MeV in multiple exclusive channels (absorption, charge exchange, and the remaining inelastic interactions). The results of this analysis are important inputs to simulations of liquid argon neutrino experiments such as the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment and the Short Baseline Neutrino program at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. They will be employed to improve the modeling of final state interactions within neutrino event generators used by these experiments, as well as the modeling of 𝜋 + -argon secondary interactions within the liquid argon. This is the first measurement of 𝜋 + -argon absorption at this kinetic energy range as well as the first ever measurement of 𝜋 + -argon charge exchange.

Exclusive dimuon production in ultraperipheral Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV with ATLAS

Exclusive dimuon production in ultraperipheral collisions (UPC), resulting from photon-photon interactions in the strong electromagnetic fields of colliding high-energy lead nuclei, PbPb(γγ) → μ + μ - (Pb (*) Pb (*) ), is studied using $\mathcal{L}$ int = 0.48 nb -1 of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV lead-lead collision data at the LHC with the ATLAS detector. Dimuon pairs are measured in the fiducial region p T,μ >4 GeV, |η μ |<2.4, invariant mass m μμ >10 GeV, and p T,μμ <2 GeV. The primary background from single-dissociative processes is extracted from the data using a template fitting technique. Differential cross sections are presented as a function of m μμ , absolute pair rapidity (|y μμ |), scattering angle in the dimuon rest frame (| cos $\mathscr{O}$$^{*}_{μμ}$|), and the colliding photon energies. The total cross section of the UPC γγ → μ + μ - process in the fiducial volume is measured to be $σ^{μμ}_{fid}$ = 34.1 ± 0.3(stat.) ± 0.7(syst.) μb. Generally good agreement is found with calculations from STARlight, which incorporate the leading-order Breit-Wheeler process with no final-state effects, albeit differences between the measurements and theoretical expectations are observed. In particular, the measured cross sections at larger |y μμ | are found to be about 10–20% larger in data than in the calculations, suggesting the presence of larger fluxes of photons in the initial state. Modification of the dimuon cross sections in the presence of forward and/or backward neutron production is also studied and is found to be associated with a harder incoming photon spectrum, consistent with expectations.

Exclusive J / ψ , ψ ( 2 s ) , and e + e - pair production in Au + Au ultraperipheral collisions at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider

Measurements of exclusive J/ψ, ψ(2⁢s), and electron-positron (e + ⁢e - ) pair photoproduction in Au+Au ultraperipheral collisions are reported by the STAR experiment at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200GeV. Here, we report several first measurements at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, which are (i) J/ψ photoproduction with large momentum transfer up to 2.2⁢(GeV/c) 2 , (ii) coherent J/ψ photoproduction associated with neutron emissions from nuclear breakup, (iii) the rapidity dependence of incoherent J/ψ photoproduction, (iv) the ψ⁡(2⁢s) photoproduction cross section at midrapidity, and (v) e + ⁢e - pair photoproduction up to high invariant mass of 6GeV/c 2 . For measurement (ii), the coherent J/ψ total cross section of γ + Au → J/ψ + Au as a function of the center-of-mass energy W γN has been obtained without photon energy ambiguities. The data are quantitatively compared with the Monte Carlo models STARlight, Sartre, BeAGLE, and theoretical calculations of gluon saturation with color glass condensate, nuclear shadowing with leading twist approximation, quantum electrodynamics, and the next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD. At the photon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 25.0 GeV, the coherent and incoherent J/ψ cross sections of Au nuclei are found to be 71% ± 10% and 36% ± 7%, respectively, of that of free protons. These data provide an important experimental constraint for nuclear parton distribution functions and a unique opportunity to advance the understanding of the nuclear modification effect at the top RHIC energy.
