The oscillator strengths of the SO /A 3Pi/-/X 3Sigma-/ band systems.

The oscillator strengths for these SO transition band systems are calculated using RKR Franck-Condon factors and the radiative lifetime previously derived from electron-beam phase-shift measurements by Smith (1971). The SO transition concerned is of considerable astrophysical importance in the search for SO in the interstellar medium by means of space-based telescopes with monochromators since the transition probability is concentrated, as shown, in relatively few transitions from the ground state.

Coherent Optical Processing of Phased Array Radar Data

Interfacing a coherent optical processor, which utilizes an electron-beam addressed, potassium dideuterium phosphate (KDP) crystal modulator, with a linear phased array is studied. An abbreviated development of typical radar signals from a linear array is included. A plan for formating the spatial modulator with linear array signals is presented. The theoretical expectations which include target angle and Doppler are derived. A simulated set of M signals which are typical of a linear array of M elements was devised. This set of signals was used to modulate the wave front of collimated laser light via the KDP crystal according to the format presented.

Integrally covered silicon solar cells.

The electron-beam technique for evaporating dielectric materials onto solar cells has been examined and developed. Titanium oxide cell antireflection coatings have been obtained which compare to silicon monoxide in environmental capabilities and which provide 3 to 4% improvement over SiO for glass covered cells. Evaporation processes have been obtained which provide a 50 to 100 micromil thick transparent (0.5 to 1.0% absorption per mil), low stressed integral cover capable of surviving space type qualification testing. Irradiation with 10 to the 15th power 1-MeV electrons shows 2% darkening, and long term UV irradiation incurs approximately 1.3% cover darkening for 50 micromil thick covers.

Crack-growth behavior in thick welded plates of Inconel 718 at room and cryogenic temperatures

Results of mechanical-properties and axial-load fatigue and fracture tests performed on thick welded plates of Inconel 718 superalloy are presented. The test objectives were to determine the tensile strength properties and the crack-growth behavior in electron-beam, plasma-arc, and gas tungsten are welds for plates 1.90 cm (0.75 in) thick. Base-metal specimens were also tested to determine the flaw-growth behavior. The tests were performed in room-temperature-air and liquid nitrogen environments. The experimental crack-growth-rate data are correlated with theoretical crack-growth-rate predictions for semielliptical surface flaws.

Hypersonic stability and control characteristics of the Rockwell International 139-B space shuttle orbiter

The purpose of this study was to determine the hypersonic aerodynamic performance, longitudinal trim, static stability, and the extent of the center-of-gravity boundaries within the design control limits as well as to examine the effect of Reynolds number on the longitudinal stability of the 139-B space shuttle orbiter. A 0.004 scale model (34-0)was tested in helium over an angle-of-attack range of 18 deg to 54 deg at 0 deg and -minus 5 deg sideslip angles. The total pressure was varied for selected configurations to obtain a Reynolds number range, based on model length, from 0.51 million to 3.6 million at Mach numbers between 17.6 and 21.6 Surface oil-flow studies and electron-beam illuminated-flow studies were also conducted at angles-of-attack of 30 deg, 40 deg, and 50 deg for selected Reynolds numbers.

Radiative lifetimes and band oscillator strengths for metal oxides. II - SiO E 1 Sigma /+/-X 1 Sigma /+/

Use of an electron-beam phase-shift apparatus to obtain the radiative lifetimes for vibrational levels of the SiO E 1 Sigma (+) state. It is found that the radiative lifetimes for the vibrational transitions of the E-X band are independent of the vibrational upper state. The measured phase shifts yield cascade free lifetimes of 10.5 plus or minus 1.1 nsec for v' from 1 to 7. Spectroscopic data from Elander and Lagerqvist (1971) were used to calculate potential curves by the Klein-Dunham procedure, and Franck-Condon factors and r-centroids for the transition were computed.

Materials and processes for space shuttle's engines

It is pointed out that over 50 different alloys are used in construction of the space shuttle main engines (SSME). Primary construction of the SSME is by welding or brazing of wrought and cast components. Welding processes involve both gas tungsten-arc welds and electron-beam welds. Electroforming has been developed as a process to fabricate and bond structural members for the SSME. Important aspects in the selection of materials and processes are related to weight saving considerations and the high-pressure hydrogen environment. Special problems and their solution in the case of various engine components are discussed, giving attention to the oxidizer preburner, the high pressure oxidizer turbopump, and the heat exchanger.

Advances in superconducting quantum electronic microcircuit fabrication

Standard microelectronic fabrication techniques have been utilized to produce batch quantities of superconducting quantum electronic devices and circuits. The overall goal is a fabrication technology yielding circuits that are rugged and stable and capable of being fabricated controllably and reproducibly in sizeable quantities. Our progress toward this goal is presented, with primary emphasis on the most recent work, which includes the use of electron-beam lithography and techniques of hybrid microelectronics. Several prototype microcircuits have been successfully fabricated. These microcircuits are formed in a thin-film parent material consisting of layers of superconducting and normal metals, and use proximity-effect structures as the active circuit elements.

An optical/digital processor - Hardware and applications

A real-time two-dimensional hybrid processor consisting of a coherent optical system, an optical/digital interface, and a PDP-11/15 control minicomputer is described. The input electrical-to-optical transducer is an electron-beam addressed potassium dideuterium phosphate (KD2PO4) light valve. The requirements and hardware for the output optical-to-digital interface, which is constructed from modular computer building blocks, are presented. Initial experimental results demonstrating the operation of this hybrid processor in phased-array radar data processing, synthetic-aperture image correlation, and text correlation are included. The applications chosen emphasize the role of the interface in the analysis of data from an optical processor and possible extensions to the digital feedback control of an optical processor.

Metalworking method for composites

Effective fabrication methods for aluminum/boron and aluminum/graphite composites have been investigated. Drawing and rolling were found to be adaptable to Al/B fabrication. Although graphite composites are not amenable to standard metal processing methods, it may be possible to reduce fabrication costs of Al/C through electron-beam heating.

Weldability of three forms of chemically vapor deposited tungsten

Methods were developed for electron-beam welding several forms of chemically vapor-deposited tungsten. Weld ductility was evaluated from the results of ductile-brittle transition-temperature determinations. Welds in tungsten produced from WF6 were considerably more ductile than those associated with WCl6-produced tungsten. The larger grain size of the latter material was largely responsible for this behavior.

Effects of high temperature and e-beam irradiation on the stability of refractory thin films

Refractory thin films of Al2O3, ZrO2, MgO, ThO2, and BN have been investigated in situ in an UHV transmission electron microscope. The electron transparent refractory films were prepared by electron-beam evaporation, anodization, RF sputtering, and thinning of bulk crystal materials. The study concentrates on monitoring the thermal and mechanical stability of the films, phase and structural changes, and electron irradiation effects as a function of film-preparation conditions. With increasing temperatures, five different crystallographic phases were observed for both anodized and electron-beam-evaporated alumina films. Zirconia films exhibited two phase transitions upon heating to 1200 C and electron-irradiation-induced crystallization of ZrO2 even at room temperature. MgO, ThO2, and BN films did not undergo any noticeable phase transformation but ruptured due to sintering below 1200 C.

Calculation of electrostatic fields in periodic structures of complex shape

A universal algorithm is presented for calculating electrostatic fields in an infinite periodic structure consisting of electrodes of arbitrary shape which are located in mirror-symmetrical manner along the axis of electron-beam propagation. The method is based on the theory of R-functions, and the differential operators which are derived on the basis of the functions. Numerical results are presented and the accuracy of the results is examined.

Nondestructive determination of the depth of planar p-n junctions by scanning electron microscopy

A method was developed for measuring nondestructively the depth of planar p-n junctions in simple devices as well as in integrated-circuit structures with the electron-beam induced current (EBIC) by scanning parallel to the junction in a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results were found to be in good agreement with those obtained by the commonly used destructive method of lapping at an angle to the junction and staining to reveal the junction.
