A Flexible Multibody Approach to Space Launch System Liftoff Pad Separation with Umbilical Disconnect

A flexible multibody dynamic framework is applied to the Space Launch System (SLS) liftoff Coupled Loads Analysis (CLA), enabling computational efficiencies and systematic inclusion of components and various nonlinearities. The objective of this work is to simulate the SLS liftoff transient pad separation event inclusive of umbilical disconnects. The vehicle stacking preloads and cryogenically induced preloads, due to the fueling of the Core Stage (CS), are integrated via specialized deformed coupling procedure to ensure full capture of the liftoff transient event. The Vehicle Stabilizer System (VSS) hydraulic struts are nonlinear and provide amplitude dependent damping, significantly contributing to the liftoff transient event. Ground Extensible Columns (EC) provide additional stiffness and preloads on the Mobile Launcher (ML), also significantly contributing to the liftoff transient. An advanced Henkel-Mar algorithm, with separation and re-contact, thus tracking the potential post separation re-contact between the booster aft skirt and ML, the umbilicals and vehicle, and ground EC separation. For this system level nonlinear dynamic simulation, the flexible multibody framework provides a systematic approach for the addition of component specific algorithms to enforce nonlinearities. This multibody framework is similar to an object-oriented programming language integrating classes of associated subroutines. As such, the complexities associated with the nonlinear CLA are greatly reduced, facilitating simplified bookkeeping as well as accelerating the execution of the nonlinear time-domain simulations.

A Flexible Multibody Approach to Space Launch System Liftoff Pad Separation with Umbilical Disconnect

A flexible multibody dynamic framework is applied to the Space Launch System(SLS)liftoff Coupled Loads Analysis(CLA), enabling computational efficiencies and systematic inclusion of component nonlinearities. This work simulates the SLS liftoff transient pad separation event inclusive of umbilical disconnects and preload strain energy release (twang). For this system level nonlinear dynamic simulation, the flexible multibody framework provides a systematic approach for the addition of component specific algorithms to enforce the subject nonlinearities. As such, the complexities associated with the nonlinear CLA are greatly reduced, facilitating simplified bookkeeping as well as accelerating the execution of the nonlinear time-domain simulations.

Modular Interface for CLPS-Scale Excavators (MICE) – Feasibility Testing of a Modular Disconnect System for Regolith Manipulation Implements Focused on Excavation and Site Preparation Activies

The Artemis Program seeks to establish a sustained lunar presence and robust economy driven by re-sources available on the Moon and enabled by sup-porting infrastructure. This will require robotic manipulation of tens of thousands of metric tons of regolith. Excavation and site preparation tasks in the unforgiving lunar environment will inevitably lead to component wear and necessitate periodic maintenance and repair. System modularity and standard interfaces are key components of enabling robotic repair and maintenance. The Modular Interface for CLPS (Commercial Lunar Payloads Services) -scale Excavators (MICE) project is a funded fiscal year 2024 Internal Research and Development (IRAD) project at NASA KSC. The MICE project seeks to test concepts for modular re-configuration of a CLPS-scale excavation and site preparation rover. These concepts, henceforth referred to as Modular Disconnect Systems (MDS), allow a mobility platform to interface with regolith manipulation implements such as a bucket drum excavator or compactor. The MDS concepts allow the mobility platform to detect one implement and swap to another implement in-situ. Power and communications is fed through a dust-tolerant electrical connection on the MDS to the implement’s actuator(s) and sensors.

A Model for Flux Rope Formation and Disconnection in Pseudostreamer Coronal Mass Ejections

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) from pseudostreamers represent a significant fraction of large-scale eruptions from the Sun. In some cases, these CMEs take a narrow jet-like form reminiscent of coronal jets; in others, they have a much broader fan-shaped morphology like CMEs from helmet streamers. We present results from a magnetohydrodynamic simulation of a broad pseudostreamer CME. The early evolution of the eruption is initiated through a combination of breakout interchange reconnection at the overlying null point and ideal instability of the flux rope that forms within the pseudostreamer. This stage is characterised by a rolling motion and deflection of the flux rope toward the breakout current layer. The stretching out of the strapping field forms a flare current sheet below the flux rope; reconnection onset there forms low-lying flare arcade loops and the two-ribbon flare footprint. Once the CME flux rope breaches the rising breakout current layer, interchange reconnection with the external open field disconnects one leg from the Sun. This induces a whip-like rotation of the flux rope, generating the unstructured fan shape characteristic of pseudostreamer CMEs. Interchange reconnection behind the CME releases torsional Alfv´en waves and bursty dense outflows into the solar wind. Our results demonstrate that pseudostreamer CMEs follow the same overall magnetic evolution as coronal jets, although they present different morphologies of their ejecta. We conclude that pseudostreamer CMEs should be considered a class of eruptions that are distinct from helmet streamer CMEs, in agreement with previous observational studies.

Apollo 14 mission: Inability to disconnect main bus A

During entry, the Apollo 14 spacecraft busses should have de-energized when the main bus-tie motor switches were switched to the off position. One motor switch did not transfer and main bus A remained energized until the battery bus-tie circuit breakers were opened after landing. Analysis revealed that residual catalyst caused the terminal pin seals to revert to a gummy state. Resulting reversion products then migrated to the motor commutator and caused brush degradation, increased and erratic commutator resistance, and reduced motor torque. The motor stalled when available motor torque was reduced below that required to drive through the maximum torque point of the switch.

Bio-medical electrical disconnects

Improvements in medical care during the last two decades have resulted in the survival of an ever-increasing group of patients with severe neuro-muscular disabilities who otherwise would have succumbed to their diseases or injuries. This has created a sizeable population of severely paralyzed persons totally dependent upon society for care. It has been estimated that this population may grow beyond 5,000,000 persons by 1980. A rather fortunate confluence of complementing technologies and surgical techniques offer promise of solving this growing socially significant problem.

Quick-disconnect coupling/filter

Two-part coupling system for hose lines combines both connection and filter in one fitting. Flared fittings make coupling less prone to leakage, and reduced number of components speeds operation. These features may make coupler useful with liquid-bulk carriers, where materials (e.g., milk, cooking oil, and liquid sugar) must be transferred quickly from vehicle to storage facility.

Analytical study of electrical disconnect system for use on manned and unmanned missions

The program to survey existing electrical connector availability, and establish an optimum connector design for maintainable spacecraft substation interfaces is reported. Functional and operational requirements are given along with the results of the documentation survey, which disclosed that the MSFC series connectors have the preferred features of current connector technology. Optimum design concepts for EVA tasks, modules serviced by manipulators, and for manipulators independent of other servicing units are presented. It is concluded that separate connector designs are required for spacecraft replaceable modules, and for crewman EVA.

Liquid rocket disconnects, couplings, fittings, fixed joints, and seals

State of the art and design criteria for components used in liquid propellant rocket propulsion systems to contain and control the flow of fluids involved are discussed. Particular emphasis is placed on the design of components used in the engine systems of boosters and upper stages, and in spacecraft propulsion systems because of the high pressure and high vibration levels to which these components are exposed. A table for conversion of U.S. customary units to SI units is included with a glossary, and a list of NASA space vehicle design criteria monographs issued to September 1976.
