A computer-aided design system geared toward conceptual design in a research environment

A computer-aided design system has recently been developed specifically for the small research group environment. The system is implemented on a Prime 400 minicomputer linked with a CDC 6600 computer. The goal was to assign the minicomputer specific tasks, such as data input and graphics, thereby reserving the large mainframe computer for time-consuming analysis codes. The basic structure of the design system consists of GEMPAK, a computer code that generates detailed configuration geometry from a minimum of input; interface programs that reformat GEMPAK geometry for input to the analysis codes; and utility programs that simplify computer access and data interpretation. The working system has had a large positive impact on the quantity and quality of research performed by the originating group. This paper describes the system, the major factors that contributed to its particular form, and presents examples of its application.

The LCLStream Ecosystem for Multi-Institutional Dataset Exploration

We describe a new end-to-end experimental data streaming framework designed from the ground up to support new types of applications – AI training, extremely high-rate X-ray time-of-flight analysis, crystal structure determination with distributed processing, and custom data science applications and visualizers yet to be created. Throughout, we use design choices merging cloud microservices with traditional HPC batch execution models for security and flexibility. This project makes a unique contribution to the DOE Integrated Research Infrastructure (IRI) landscape. By creating a flexible, API-driven data request service, we address a significant need for high-speed data streaming sources for the X-ray science data analysis community. With the combination of data request API, mutual authentication web security framework, job queue system, high-rate data buffer, and complementary nature to facility infrastructure, the LCLStreamer framework has prototyped and implemented several new paradigms critical for future generation experiments.

Methodology for object-oriented real-time systems analysis and design: Software engineering

Successful application of software engineering methodologies requires an integrated analysis and design life-cycle in which the various phases flow smoothly 'seamlessly' from analysis through design to implementation. Furthermore, different analysis methodologies often lead to different structuring of the system so that the transition from analysis to design may be awkward depending on the design methodology to be used. This is especially important when object-oriented programming is to be used for implementation when the original specification and perhaps high-level design is non-object oriented. Two approaches to real-time systems analysis which can lead to an object-oriented design are contrasted: (1) modeling the system using structured analysis with real-time extensions which emphasizes data and control flows followed by the abstraction of objects where the operations or methods of the objects correspond to processes in the data flow diagrams and then design in terms of these objects; and (2) modeling the system from the beginning as a set of naturally occurring concurrent entities (objects) each having its own time-behavior defined by a set of states and state-transition rules and seamlessly transforming the analysis models into high-level design models. A new concept of a 'real-time systems-analysis object' is introduced and becomes the basic building block of a series of seamlessly-connected models which progress from the object-oriented real-time systems analysis and design system analysis logical models through the physical architectural models and the high-level design stages. The methodology is appropriate to the overall specification including hardware and software modules. In software modules, the systems analysis objects are transformed into software objects.

Finite-element-analysis model and preliminary ground testing of controls-structures interaction evolutionary model reflector

Results of two different nonlinear finite element analyses and preliminary test results for the final design of the Controls-Structures Interaction Evolutionary Model are presented. Load-deflection data bases are generalized from analysis and testing of the 16-foot diameter, dish shaped reflector. Natural frequencies and mode shapes are obtained from vibrational analysis. Experimental and analytical results show similar trends; however, future test hardware modifications and finite element model refinement would be necessary to obtain better correlation. The two nonlinear analysis procedures are both adequate techniques for the analysis of prestressed structures with complex geometries.

Ares-I-X Stability and Control Flight Test: Analysis and Plans

The flight test of the Ares I-X vehicle provides a unique opportunity to reduce risk of the design of the Ares I vehicle and test out design, math modeling, and analysis methods. One of the key features of the Ares I design is the significant static aerodynamic instability coupled with the relatively flexible vehicle - potentially resulting in a challenging controls problem to provide adequate flight path performance while also providing adequate structural mode damping and preventing adverse control coupling to the flexible structural modes. Another challenge is to obtain enough data from the single flight to be able to conduct analysis showing the effectiveness of the controls solutions and have data to inform design decisions for Ares I. This paper will outline the modeling approaches and control system design to conduct this flight test, and also the system identification techniques developed to extract key information such as control system performance (gain/phase margins, for example), structural dynamics responses, and aerodynamic model estimations.

Design and analysis of composite structures with stress concentrations

An overview of an analytic procedure which can be used to provide comprehensive stress and strength analysis of composite structures with stress concentrations is given. The methodology provides designer/analysts with a user-oriented procedure which, within acceptable engineering accuracy, accounts for the effects of a wide range of application design variables. The procedure permits the strength of arbitrary laminate constructions under general bearing/bypass load conditions to be predicted with only unnotched unidirectional strength and stiffness input data required. Included is a brief discussion of the relevancy of this analysis to the design of primary aircraft structure; an overview of the analytic procedure with theory/test correlations; and an example of the use and interaction of this strength analysis relative to the design of high-load transfer bolted composite joints.

Origami-based Composite Space Structures

The main objective of my internship was working on developing a new type of deployable composite for space structures and new method of deployment via use of origami, composites, UV curing resins, and shape memory polymers. My role in the project was to collect an initial literature survey on the subject including origami, the history of deployable space structures, previous issues and problems faced in the field, previous and current research being done on the structural aspect as well as the materials aspect of the subject. I presented this information to our team, where we discussed and determined our research focus and project design specs. We have been making or will make decisions on the project’s purpose, material, origami type, manufacturing method, and testing methods. I am now in charge of the protype design as we enter the design stage of our research. I am using PTC Creo software to design the structural aspects of the first protype so that we can begin small scale testing. I will perform data analysis in order to review the results with our team, so we can make the next design decisions regarding changes or iterations of the design. We hope to renew this project in the next fiscal year in order to increase the TRL of the project so that it can eventually be used in multiple functions in space such as the construction of lunar habitats. In just my brief time with NASA, I have gained so much personally and professionally. I developed my ability to search through and narrow down information when doing research. In the weekly meetings I practiced presenting information to my peers and superiors, and, just as importantly, discussing and adapting to what we were learning. I acquired experience in using technology to my advantage including remote work, new software like PTC Creo, NASA archives, and connecting with others beyond my team to gain help. I enjoyed the immense resource of knowledge that my mentors had to offer, and that they gave me a large amount of responsibility in this research. I truly felt like I was contributing to something bigger than myself and understood how directly I was involved in NASA’s work. This internship has further cemented my love for space and desire to continue in the field. I have a better understanding of the research and development process and am now considering joining a research lab with my university next year.

pyEGAF: An open-source Python library for the Evaluated Gamma-ray Activation File

The Evaluated Gamma-ray Activation File (EGAF) is one of the most comprehensive resources for thermal neutron-capture data. This database contains data from prompt gamma activation analysis measurements carried out in a consistent manner using the same experimental configuration at the Budapest Research Reactor for 245 isotopes. Although these valuable datasets have been freely available for many years, one of the drawbacks is the outdated and cryptic Evaluated Nuclear Structure Data File (ENSDF) format that is currently adopted for dissemination, making it difficult for users unfamiliar with the format to access and utilize the data contained therein. Furthermore, the ENSDF format does not readily lend itself to modern computational technologies and a parser is required to interpret the complicated mixed-record format. To help overcome these challenges, we have developed a translator to convert the ENSDF-formatted datasets into an open standard JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) format enabling accessibility to applications using different programming languages running in different environments. To compliment this effort, we have also developed an open-source software package implemented in Python, pyEGAF, that is designed to interact with the JSON data structures for general purpose access, manipulation, and analysis of the neutron-capture $\gamma$-ray data in EGAF. The new format, together with the pyEGAF library, greatly enhances access to the wider applications community where EGAF data may be useful or is required.

Structural design and analysis for an ultra low CTE optical bench for the Hubble Space Telescope corrective optics

The stringent stability requirements of the Corrective Optics Space Telescope Axial Replacement (COSTAR) necessitates a Deployable Optical Bench (DOB) with both a low CTE and high resonant frequency. The DOB design consists of a monocoque thin shell structure which marries metallic machined parts with graphite epoxy formed structure. Structural analysis of the DOB has been integrated into the laminate design and optimization process. Also, the structural analytical results are compared with vibration and thermal test data to assess the reliability of the analysis.

Buckling analysis and test correlation of high temperature structural panels

This paper focuses on the design, analysis, and test of a high temperature structural panel, constructed of Ti-6-4, subjected to a variety of thermal and mechanical load conditions. A follow-on panel, constructed of TMC, is also discussed in less detail. The design constraints and test set-up are discussed, as well as the test methods that were used: the grid shadow moire method and a single gage force stiffness method. The agreement between the test data and analysis for this test program provides confidence in the methods that are currently being used to design structures for hypersonic vehicles. The agreement also suggests that postbuckled strength may potentially be used to reduce the vehicle weight.

Comparison of Structural Concepts for Transport Aircraft with a Tail Cone Turbine

An evaluation of three structural concepts for an advanced aircraft design with a tail cone turbine is presented. Structural models were developed using an innovative rapid finite element modeling tool called Conceptual Design Shop (CDS). CDS is an attempt to fill a gap in current finite element modeling software to automatically connect wings and tails to the fuselage with sufficient support structure in airframe models. For comparison with actual aircraft structures, a model of a transport aircraft design developed using CDS is compared with published structural weight data for a Boeing 737-200. A method for computing aerodynamic stability parameters from an MSC/NASTRAN finite element analysis output deck is also discussed. Finally, the weight effects for using a tail cone turbine in an advanced transport aircraft design are evaluated by comparing three composite structural models, for which component thicknesses and cross-sections are sized by the Hypersizer software.

Interactive design and analysis of future large spacecraft concepts

An interactive computer aided design program used to perform systems level design and analysis of large spacecraft concepts is presented. Emphasis is on rapid design, analysis of integrated spacecraft, and automatic spacecraft modeling for lattice structures. Capabilities and performance of multidiscipline applications modules, the executive and data management software, and graphics display features are reviewed. A single user at an interactive terminal create, design, analyze, and conduct parametric studies of Earth orbiting spacecraft with relative ease. Data generated in the design, analysis, and performance evaluation of an Earth-orbiting large diameter antenna satellite are used to illustrate current capabilities. Computer run time statistics for the individual modules quantify the speed at which modeling, analysis, and design evaluation of integrated spacecraft concepts is accomplished in a user interactive computing environment.

Design sensitivity analysis with Applicon IFAD using the adjoint variable method

A numerical method is presented to implement structural design sensitivity analysis using the versatility and convenience of existing finite element structural analysis program and the theoretical foundation in structural design sensitivity analysis. Conventional design variables, such as thickness and cross-sectional areas, are considered. Structural performance functionals considered include compliance, displacement, and stress. It is shown that calculations can be carried out outside existing finite element codes, using postprocessing data only. That is, design sensitivity analysis software does not have to be imbedded in an existing finite element code. The finite element structural analysis program used in the implementation presented is IFAD. Feasibility of the method is shown through analysis of several problems, including built-up structures. Accurate design sensitivity results are obtained without the uncertainty of numerical accuracy associated with selection of a finite difference perturbation.
