Space aging of solid rocket materials

Solid rocket propellant and rocket motor components were aged in a vented container on the interior of the LDEF. The results of aging IPSM-II/PAM-DII space motor components are presented. Ballistic and mechanical properties of the space aged main propellant, igniter propellant, and ignition system were compared with similar data from preflight and ground aged samples. Mechanical properties of the composite materials and bonded joints used in the motor case, insulation, liner, nozzle, exit cone, and skirt were similarly evaluated. The space aging results are compared to data collected in a ground based vacuum aging program on similar components.

Rotation Rate of Saturn's Magnetosphere using CAPS Plasma Measurements

We present the present status of an investigation of the rotation rate of Saturn's magnetosphere using a 3D velocity moment technique being developed at Goddard which is similar to the 2D version used by Sittler et al. for SOI and similar to that used by Thomsen et al.. This technique allows one to nearly cover the full energy range of the Cassini Plasma Spectrometer (CAPS) IMS from 1 V . E/Q < 50 kV. Since our technique maps the observations into a local inertial frame, it does work during roll maneuvers. We make comparisons with the bi-Maxwellian fitting technique developed by Wilson et al. and the similar velocity moment technique by Thomsen et al. . We concentrate our analysis when ion composition data is available, which is used to weight the non-compositional data, referred to as singles data, to separate H+, H2+ and water group ions (W+) from each other. The chosen periods have high enough telemetry rates (4 kbps or higher) so that coincidence ion data, similar to that used by Sittler et al. for SOI is available. The ion data set is especially valuable for measuring flow velocities for protons, which are more difficult to derive using singles data within the inner magnetosphere, where the signal is dominated by heavy ions (i.e., proton peak merges with W+ peak as low energy shoulder). Our technique uses a flux function, which is zero in the proper plasma flow frame, to estimate fluid parameter uncertainties. The comparisons investigate the experimental errors and potential for systematic errors in the analyses, including ours. The rolls provide the best data set when it comes to getting 4PI coverage of the plasma but are more susceptible to time aliasing effects. In the future we will then make comparisons with magnetic field observations, Saturn ionosphere conductivities as presently known and the field aligned currents necessary for the planet to enforce corotation of the rotating plasma.

Space aging of solid rocket materials

Solid rocket propellant and rocket motor components were aged in a vented container on the interior of the LDEF. This paper will present the results of aging the Improved Performance Space Motor-II/Payload Assist Module-Delta II (IPSM-II/PAM-DII) space motor components. The space aging results will be compared to data collected in a ground based vacuum aging program on similar components. The operation of the vacuum actuated venting valve and pressure actuated resealing of the container will also be addressed. The materials tested showed no significant changes due to space aging. These results indicate that properly designed solid rocket motors can be expected to perform reliably after extended periods of exposure to a space environment.

Models for synthetic data generation

The software includes a suite of probabilistic statistical/machine learning models that can generate discrete synthetic data. Each model is trained on a set of real (private) data and then it can be used to generate synthetic but statistically similar data. Once ready, the model can generate as many samples as we want. Finally, in addition to the actual models, the software includes code to process data, evaluate results (based on cross validation), and produce reports.

SIRIUS: Science-Driven Data Management for Multi-Tiered Storage

The data sets being generated by large applications on very large-scale systems are increasing in both size and complexity. At the same time, there are new ways available to store and access these data sets. The goal in this project is to develop software that applications can use to make use of new and existing storage technologies in more sophisticated ways. One challenge in scientific data management is handling ‘hot’ vs ‘cold’ data. Data that is hot is data that is needed (or will be needed soon) in order for the program to continue progressing, while cold data is either output (and so will not be need further during the life of the program) or will not be needed until significantly later in the program’s run. Hot data should be stored in a way that allows fast access. On most systems, economic factors lead to an inverse relationship between storage performance and storage capacity and so fast access storage is limited. This makes it important to correctly place hot and cold data and avoid cold data unnecessarily consuming precious resources. In this reporting period, we addressed this challenge in various ways and at various levels. Data management frameworks offer only limited control to applications in how data is stored. We have added software capabilities for seamlessly moving data between layers of the storage technology using promote and demote functions to existing software frameworks. This gives direct control to applications in deciding what priority data receives. Additionally, we integrated different storage layer management frameworks in order to allow data to be exchanged and moved between storage layers in a consistent way across the application. Further, applications are not always able to directly decide what storage level makes sense for a given piece of data without an understanding of the underlying storage technologies. Data storage frameworks are often positioned to make these sorts of decisions in service of the application. We have added machine-learning based capabilities to data staging frameworks in order to make intelligent decisions about where data should be stored given learning about patterns in previous usage of similar data.

On the Dynamic Characteristics of Free-Liquid Jets and a Partial Correlation with Orifice Geometry

A technique for evaluating the dynamic characteristics of free-liquid jets on a comparative basis is presented. This method consists of determining the pressure distribution produced by the perpendicular impingement of a jet upon a flat plate and using these data for comparing and categorizing jets with unknown properties in terms of similar data produced by jets having known characteristics-i.e., with jets produced by fully developed turbulent flow, fully developed laminar flow, and a jet having a near-uniform velocity profile. The visual characteristics, as well as both the mean and the fluctuating pressure distributions, are presented for these three reference configurations and for a number of jets produced by orifices having varying length-diameter ratios, combined with varying degrees of surface roughness in the initial five diameters of straight bore.

Sliding electrical contact materials

The results of research programs to develop sliding electrical contact materials, both brushes and slip rings, are discussed. Problems attendant to operating sliding contacts in a vacuum are defined; limitations of commercial materials in solving these problems are described, and special materials and surface finish conditions which have resulted in solutions to these problems are presented. Data from operational tests on the newly developed materials are compared with similar data obtained from materials now used as standards in consumer products. Possible commercial applications of the more efficient sliding contact materials are discussed briefly.

Interplanetary magnetic field effects on high latitude ionospheric convection

Relations between the electric field and the electric current in the ionosphere can be established on the basis of a system of mathematical and physical equations provided by the equations of current continuity and Ohm's law. For this reason, much of the synthesis of electric field and plasma velocity data in the F-region is made with the aid of similar data sets derived from field-aligned current and horizontal current measurements. During the past decade, the development of a self-consistent picture of the distribution and behavior of these measurements has proceeded almost in parallel. The present paper is concerned with the picture as it applies to the electric field and plasma drift velocity and its dependence on the interplanetary magnetic field. Attention is given to the southward interplanetary magnetic field and the northward interplanetary magnetic field.

Fluctuation analysis of relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions in emulsion chambers

An analytical technique was developed for identifying enhanced fluctuations in the angular distributions of secondary particles produced from relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions. The method is applied under the assumption that the masses of the produced particles are small compared to their linear momenta. The importance of particles rests in the fact that enhanced fluctuations in the rapidity distributions is considered to be an experimental signal for the creation of the quark-gluon-plasma (QGP), a state of nuclear matter predicted from the quantum chromodynamics theory (QCD). In the approach, Monte Carlo simulations are employed that make use of a portable random member generator that allow the calculations to be performed on a desk-top computer. The method is illustrated with data taken from high altitude emulsion exposures and is immediately applicable to similar data from accelerator-based emulsion exposures.

Bit-error-rate testing of fiber optic data links for MMIC-based phased array antennas

The measured bit-error-rate (BER) performance of a fiber optic data link to be used in satellite communications systems is presented and discussed. In the testing, the link was measured for its ability to carry high burst rate, serial-minimum shift keyed (SMSK) digital data similar to those used in actual space communications systems. The fiber optic data link, as part of a dual-segment injection-locked RF fiber optic link system, offers a means to distribute these signals to the many radiating elements of a phased array antenna. Test procedures, experimental arrangements, and test results are presented.

Selecting a general-purpose data compression algorithm

The National Space Science Data Center's Common Data Formate (CDF) is capable of storing many types of data such as scalar data items, vectors, and multidimensional arrays of bytes, integers, or floating point values. However, regardless of the dimensionality and data type, the data break down into a sequence of bytes that can be fed into a data compression function to reduce the amount of data without losing data integrity and thus remaining fully reconstructible. Because of the diversity of data types and high performance speed requirements, a general-purpose, fast, simple data compression algorithm is required to incorporate data compression into CDF. The questions to ask are how to evaluate and compare compression algorithms, and what compression algorithm meets all requirements. The object of this paper is to address these questions and determine the most appropriate compression algorithm to use within the CDF data management package that would be applicable to other software packages with similar data compression needs.

Metabolomic and Genomic Markers of Atherosclerosis as Related to Oxidative Stress, Inflammation, and Vascular Function in Twin Astronauts

Background: Future human space travel will consist primarily of long-duration missions onboard the International Space Station (ISS) or exploration-class missions to Mars, its moons, or nearby asteroids. Astronauts participating in long-duration missions may be at an increased risk of oxidative stress and inflammatory damage due to radiation, psychological stress, altered physical activity, nutritional insufficiency, and hyperoxia during extravehicular activity. By studying one identical twin during his 1-year ISS mission and one ground-based twin, this work extends a current NASA-funded investigation to determine whether these spaceflight factors contribute to an accelerated progression of atherosclerosis. This study of twins affords a unique opportunity to examine the spaceflight-related atherosclerosis risk independent of the confounding factors associated with different genotypes. Purpose: The purpose of this investigation is to determine whether biomarkers of oxidative and inflammatory stress are elevated during and after long-duration spaceflight and determine if a relation exists between levels of these biomarkers and structural and functional indices of atherosclerotic risk measured in the carotid and brachial arteries. These physiological and biochemical data will be extended by using an exploratory approach to investigate the relationship between intermediate phenotypes and risk factors for atherosclerosis and the metabolomic signature from plasma and urine samples. Since metabolites are often the indirect products of gene expression, we will simultaneously assess gene expression and DNA methylation in leukocytes. Hypothesis: We predict that the space-flown twin will experience elevated biomarkers of oxidative stress and inflammatory damage, altered arterial structure and function, accelerated telomere shortening, dysregulation of genes associated with oxidative stress and inflammation, and a metabolic profile shift that is associated with elevated atherosclerosis risk factors. Conversely, these will not be observed in the ground-based twin. Methods: We will measure blood and urine biomarkers of oxidative stress and inflammation as well as arterial structure and function (carotid intima-medial thickness and brachial artery flow-mediated dilation) in one twin astronaut before, during, and after long-duration spaceflight and in his twin serving as a ground-based control. Furthermore, we will measure metabolomics (targeted and untargeted approaches) and genomic markers (DNA methylation, mRNA gene expression, telomere length) to elucidate the molecular mechanisms involved. A panel of biomarkers of oxidative and inflammatory stress will be measured in venous blood samples and 24-hour (in-flight) and 48-hour (pre- and post-flight) urine pools twice before flight, early (flight days 15 and 60) and late (2 weeks before landing) during the mission, and early in the post-flight recovery phase (approximately 3-5 days after landing). Arterial structure, assessed from measures of intima-media thickness, will be measured at the same times. Arterial function will be assessed using brachial flow-mediated dilation, a well-validated measure used to assess endothelium-dependent vasodilation and a sensitive predictor of atherosclerotic risk, only before and after spaceflight. Discussion: Pre- and in-flight data collection is in progress for the space-flown twin, and similar data have been obtained from the ground-based twin. Blood and urine samples will be batch processed when received from ISS after the conclusion of the 1-year mission. Results from these individual subjects will be compared to the larger complement of subjects participating in the companion study currently ongoing in ISS astronauts.

Mark 3 real-time fringe detection system

A RAM memory built into the Mark 3 decoder module allows the capture of 1 Megabit of data. Data may be collected either in real time or from a pre-recorded tape. Once collected, the data may be retrieved using a standard EIA serial data link. The data may be transmitted to a remote computer for cross correlation processing with similar data from other stations to verify fringes in real time. The data may also be analyzed by a local computer to verify phase calibration, bandpass, format, etc., during a Mark 3 observing session.

Space Shuttle earth observations photography - Data listing process

The data listing process of the electronic data base of the Catalogs of Space Shuttle Earth Observations Photography is described. Similar data are recorded for each frame in each role from the mission. At the end of each roll, a computer printout is checked for mistakes, glitches, and typographical errors. After the roll and frames have been corrected, the data listings are ready for transfer to the data base and for development of the catalog.

Differenced Doppler tracking in interplanetary navigation - The Magellan cruise reconstruction

The Magellan mission was the first in which Doppler and differenced Doppler tracking data were acquired at X-band uplink/downlink frequencies from the Deep Space Network (DSN). This paper describes a reconstruction of the Venus approach-phase navigation investigating the capabilities of these data types, which are up to an order of magnitude more precise than similar data acquired at S-band frequencies in previous missions. Comparisons of orbit solutions obtained with Doppler, Doppler plus differenced Doppler, and Doppler plus delta-differential one-way Range (DeltaDOR) data indicate that both differenced Doppler and DeltaDOR yield improvements of factors of 3 to 5 over the accuracy of the Doppler-only solutions obtained during Venus approach operations, in which the Doppler data were deweighted from their inherent accuracy due to mismodeling problems.
