Electrical resistance of the current collector controls lithium morphology

Abstract The electrodeposition of low surface area lithium is critical to successful adoption of lithium metal batteries. Here, we discover the dependence of lithium metal morphology on electrical resistance of substrates, enabling us to design an alternative strategy for controlling lithium morphology and improving electrochemical performance. By modifying the current collector with atomic layer deposited conductive (ZnO, SnO 2 ) and resistive (Al 2 O 3 ) nanofilms, we show that conductive films promote the formation of high surface area lithium deposits, whereas highly resistive films promote the formation of lithium clusters of low surface area. We reveal an electrodeposition mechanism in which radial diffusion of electroactive species is promoted on resistive substrates, resulting in lateral growth of large (150 µm in diameter) planar lithium deposits. Using resistive substrates, similar lithium morphologies are formed in three distinct classes of electrolytes, resulting in up to ten-fold improvement in battery performance. Ultimately, we report anode-free pouch cells using the Al 2 O 3 -modified copper that maintain 60 % of their initial discharge capacity after 100 cycles, displaying the benefits of resistive substrates for controlling lithium electrodeposition.

A Generic and Multifunctional Electromagnetic Transient Model for Grid-Following Inverters

This paper presents a generic and multifunctional electromagnetic transient (EMT) dynamic model of grid-following (GFL) inverter-based resources (IBRs) using the PSCAD software platform. The features of the model include flexibility in selecting various types and combinations of DC sources covering photovoltaic modules, battery modules, and ideal DC-source modules as well as flexibility in selecting either switching or averaged models of the inverter. This model also covers exhaustive lists of controller algorithm, including open-loop/closed-loop PQ dispatch control, DC voltage and AC terminal voltage control, and conventional current control designed in the dq-domain, the ..alpha....beta.. -domain, and the positive-/negative-sequence domain. Moreover, this model is equipped with flexibility in selecting various types of current-limiting schemes, including saturation-based and latching-based current limiters, and anti-windup protection. Also, the EMT model is agnostic to the MVA rating and is suitable for interfacing transmission systems by complying with IEEE Std. 2800. The generality in the power circuits and the multifunctional options in the operation and control of the developed EMT model make it suitable for both academia and industry to study various power system aspects, including, but not limited to, the fault behavior of GFL IBRs, the impacts on the protection system, and the transient stability of a system interfaced with large numbers of GFL IBRs.

Modified Virtual Oscillator-Based Operation of Grid-Forming Converters with Single Voltage Sensor: Preprint

This paper proposes a virtual oscillator-based control architecture for a grid-forming converter with an inner current control loop. In general, the virtual oscillator is based on a Lienard type of oscillator equation with a cubic nonlinearity. A virtual oscillator alone cannot accommodate unbalanced or harmonic mitigation while operating converters in grid-forming mode. Therefore, to accomplish better tracking performance, incorporating the provision for nonlinear and/or unbalanced loads, an inner current control loop is utilized that is based on the Lyapunov energy function type control architecture. To reduce the overall cost of implementation and ensure proper phase difference in the generated voltages, the implemented virtual oscillator operates with only one voltage feedback from the point of common coupling. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach, the overall system has been modeled in MATTLAB/Simulink and PLECS domain. This paper also presents case studies showing the successful production of low harmonic load voltages under nonideal loading conditions, along with other important results.

Proximity effect between superconducting and normal metals

Electrical characteristics of thin films of tin vapor deposited on gold substrates are described. Favorable characteristics of these films include: (1) shiny and smooth finishes; (2) higher Josephson critical currents; (3) smaller electronic mean paths; and (4) consistent current-voltage curve shapes. One unfavorable characteristic is a much steeper increase of the Josephson critical current with decreasing temperature. The functional variation of the Josephson current with the control current is described. Two functional forms have been observed and a brief description as to possible mechanisms for this behavior have been included.

Transistorized PWM inverter-induction motor drive system

This paper describes the development of a transistorized PWM inverter-induction motor traction drive system. A vehicle performance analysis was performed to establish the vehicle tractive effort-speed requirements. These requirements were then converted into a set of inverter and motor specifications. The inverter was a transistorized three-phase bridge using General Electric power Darlington transistors. The description of the design and development of this inverter is the principal object of this paper. The high-speed induction motor is a design which is optimized for use with an inverter power source. The primary feedback control is a torque angle control with voltage and torque outer loop controls. A current-controlled PWM technique is used to control the motor voltage. The drive has a constant torque output with PWM operation to base motor speed and a constant horsepower output with square wave operation to maximum speed. The drive system was dynamometer tested and the results are presented.

Power electronics for a 1-kilowatt arc jet thruster

After more than two decades, new space mission requirements have revived interest in arcjet systems. The preliminary development and demonstration of new, high efficiency, power electronic concepts for start up and steady state control of dc arcjets is reported. The design comprises a pulse width modulated power converter which is closed loop configured to give fast current control. An inductor, in series with the arcjet, serves the dual role of providing instantaneous current control, as well as a high voltage arc ignition pulse. Benchmark efficiency, transient response, regulation, and ripple data are presented. Tests with arcjets demonstrate that the power electronics breadboard can start thrusters consistently with no apparent damage and transfer reliably to the nondestructive high voltage arc mode in less than a second.

Root Cause Analysis of AC Overcurrent in July 2020 San Fernando Disturbance

On July 7 2020, approximately 1,000 MW reduction in solar photovoltaic (PV) output was experienced by the bulk power system in Southern California after a three-phase fault. Disturbance analysis indicates that instantaneous AC current caused inverter tripping. The projection of the root cause of AC overcurrent from the NERC report is that inverter current control is not tight. This letter provides a quantitative analysis on ac overcurrent and addresses the following questions: (i) what type of current controls may lead to ac overcurrent; and (ii) how controller parameters and grid strength influence ac overcurrent. Here, the letter provides frequency-domain analysis and time-domain simulation results of a grid-integrated inverter to illustrate the effect of control parameters and grid strength on ac overcurrent.

Design and Development of Lateral Flight Director

The current control law used for the flight director in the Boeing 737 simulator is inadequate with large localizer deviations near the middle marker. Eight different control laws are investigated. A heuristic method is used to design control laws that meet specific performance criteria. The design of each is described in detail. Several tests were performed and compared with the current control law for the flight director. The goal was to design a control law for the flight director that can be used with large localizer deviations near the middle marker, which could be caused by winds or wake turbulence, without increasing its level of complexity.

Dynamic analysis of a photovoltaic power system with battery storage capability

A photovolataic power system with a battery storage capability is analyzed. A dual battery current control concept is proposed, which enables the battery to either supply or accept power depending upon system environment and load conditions. A simulation of the power system, including the battery current control, is developed and evaluated. The evaulation demonstrate the visbility of the battery control concept of switch the battery from a charge to discharge mode and back as required by load and environmental conditions. An acceptable system operation is demonstrated over the entire insolation range. Additionally, system sensitivity, bandwidth, and damping characteristics of the battery control are shown to be acceptable for a projected hardware implementation.

Controlling spin current polarization through non-collinear antiferromagnetism

The interconversion of charge and spin currents via spin-Hall effect is essential for spintronics. Energy-efficient and deterministic switching of magnetization can be achieved when spin polarizations of these spin currents are collinear with the magnetization. However, symmetry conditions generally restrict spin polarizations to be orthogonal to both the charge and spin flows. Spin polarizations can deviate from such direction in nonmagnetic materials only when the crystalline symmetry is reduced. Here, we show control of the spin polarization direction by using a non-collinear antiferromagnet Mn 3 GaN, in which the triangular spin structure creates a low magnetic symmetry while maintaining a high crystalline symmetry. We demonstrate that epitaxial Mn 3 GaN/permalloy heterostructures can generate unconventional spin-orbit torques at room temperature corresponding to out-of-plane and Dresselhaus-like spin polarizations which are forbidden in any sample with two-fold rotational symmetry. Our results demonstrate an approach based on spin-structure design for controlling spin-orbit torque, enabling high-efficient antiferromagnetic spintronics.

Turbine Engine Clearance Control Systems: Current Practices and Future Directions

Improved blade tip sealing in the high pressure compressor (HPC) and high pressure turbine (HPT) can provide dramatic reductions in specific fuel consumption (SFC), time-on-wing, compressor stall margin, and engine efficiency as well as increased payload and mission range capabilities. Maintenance costs to overhaul large commercial gas turbine engines can easily exceed $1M. Engine removal from service is primarily due to spent exhaust gas temperature (EGT) margin caused mainly by the deterioration of HPT components. Increased blade tip clearance is a major factor in hot section component degradation. As engine designs continue to push the performance envelope with fewer parts and the market drives manufacturers to increase service life, the need for advanced sealing continues to grow. A review of aero gas turbine engine HPT performance degradation and the mechanisms that promote these losses are discussed. Benefits to the HPT due to improved clearance management are identified. Past and present sealing technologies are presented along with specifications for next generation engine clearance control systems.

Fail-Safe Magnetic Bearing Controller Demonstrated Successfully

The Structural Mechanics and Dynamics Branch has successfully demonstrated a fail-safe controller for the Fault-Tolerant Magnetic Bearing rig at the NASA Glenn Research Center. The rotor is supported by two 8-pole redundant radial bearings, and coil failing situations are simulated by manually shutting down their control current commands from the controller cockpit. The effectiveness of the controller was demonstrated when only two active coils from each radial bearing could be used (that is, 14 coils failed). These remaining two coils still levitated the rotor and spun it without losing stability or desired position up to the maximum allowable speed of 20,000 rpm.

Adaptive Data-based Predictive Control for Short Take-off and Landing (STOL) Aircraft

Data-based Predictive Control is an emerging control method that stems from Model Predictive Control (MPC). MPC computes current control action based on a prediction of the system output a number of time steps into the future and is generally derived from a known model of the system. Data-based predictive control has the advantage of deriving predictive models and controller gains from input-output data. Thus, a controller can be designed from the outputs of complex simulation code or a physical system where no explicit model exists. If the output data happens to be corrupted by periodic disturbances, the designed controller will also have the built-in ability to reject these disturbances without the need to know them. When data-based predictive control is implemented online, it becomes a version of adaptive control. The characteristics of adaptive data-based predictive control are particularly appropriate for the control of nonlinear and time-varying systems, such as Short Take-off and Landing (STOL) aircraft. STOL is a capability of interest to NASA because conceptual Cruise Efficient Short Take-off and Landing (CESTOL) transport aircraft offer the ability to reduce congestion in the terminal area by utilizing existing shorter runways at airports, as well as to lower community noise by flying steep approach and climb-out patterns that reduce the noise footprint of the aircraft. In this study, adaptive data-based predictive control is implemented as an integrated flight-propulsion controller for the outer-loop control of a CESTOL-type aircraft. Results show that the controller successfully tracks velocity while attempting to maintain a constant flight path angle, using longitudinal command, thrust and flap setting as the control inputs.
