Shaping Symmetry and Molding Morphology of Triply-Periodic Network Assemblies via Molecular Design and Processing of Block Copolymers

This project aimed to uncover molecular design rules for block copolymer (BCP) assemblies of triply-periodic network (TPN) phases, which are highly sought after, yet elusive, nanostructures for many functional material applications that rely on their combination of symmetry and polycontinuous domain connectivity [R1, R2], such as topological-photonics, supercapacitors and ultrafiltration media. While they have been a target of “bottom up” approaches to nanostructured, hybrid materials, the ability to manipulate the tubular network morphology of TPN assemblies beyond the cubic double-gyroid (DG) phase has advanced relatively little.

Block Copolymer-Templated Synthesis of Fe–Ni–Co-Modified Nanoporous Alumina Films

Despite intense interest in the catalytic potential of transition metal oxide heterostructures, originating from their large surface area and tunable chemistry, the fabrication of well-defined multicomponent oxide coatings with controlled architectures remains challenging. Here, we demonstrate a simple and effective swelling-assisted sequential infiltration synthesis (SIS) strategy to fabricate hierarchically porous multicomponent metal-oxide electrocatalysts with tunable bimetallic composition. A combination of solution-based infiltration (SBI) of transition metals, iron (Fe), nickel (Ni), and cobalt (Co), into a block copolymer (PS73-b-P4VP28) template, followed by vapor-phase infiltration of alumina using sequential infiltration synthesis (SIS), was employed to synthesize porous, robust, conformal and transparent multicomponent metal-oxide coatings like Fe/AlO x , Fe+Ni/AlO x , and Fe+Co/AlO x . Electrochemical assessments for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in a 0.1 M KOH electrolyte demonstrated that the Fe+Ni/AlO x composite exhibited markedly superior catalytic activity, achieving an impressive onset potential of 1.41 V and a peak current density of 3.29 mA/cm 2 . This superior activity reflects the well-known synergistic effect of alloying transition metals with a trace of Fe, which facilitates OER kinetics. Overall, our approach offers a versatile and scalable path towards the design of stable and efficient catalysts with tunable nanostructures, opening new possibilities for a wide range of electrochemical energy applications.

Enhanced Interfacial Bonding of Graft Copolymers

To understand how thermoplastic welding strength can be tuned through chemical modifications and macromolecular topology, we combined coarse-grained molecular dynamics (MD) simulations with experimental validation. Our simulations examined the diffusion dynamics of both linear and graft polymers across representative interfaces, revealing that diffusion-controlled interdigitation follows a power law, with the exponent decreasing from 0.34 to 0.11 as grafting density increases from 7.5 to 196% (with side chains grafted to both sides of a monomer unit). The addition of side chains enhances welding efficiency, as dense bottlebrush polymers with high grafting density reach maximum rupture strength faster than linear polymers. However, their saturated rupture strength is lower. This observation is subsequently corroborated by experimental lap-shear tests comparing linear polyethylene with octene grafted polyethylene elastomers. Our MD simulations show that unlike linear polymers, where backbone entanglements dominate, the grafted side chains introduce mechanisms in addition to entanglement dilution. The rapid interdigitation of side chains creates a dense mesh of entropic van der Waals contacts, which can also enhance the film welding. Furthermore, our MD simulations reveal a brittle rupture behavior in linear and comb-like (mildly grafted) polymers, while bottlebrush (densely grafted) polymers display elastomeric behavior with a pronounced stress plateau prior to fracture. Our simulations deconvolute the influence of polymer topology on deformation behavior. The rate of polymer deformation becomes lower than the applied strain rate prior to rupture, and the onset of this deviation is progressively delayed from linear to bottlebrush polymers. This trend highlights the critical role of molecular architecture in governing the mechanical response. In conclusion, these results provide deeper insight into the underlying welding mechanisms of topological polymers and present a potential approach for mitigating the interface anisotropy that is inherent in advanced manufacturing techniques such as fused filament fabrication.

Cyclic Olefin Copolymer based Alkaline Exchange Polymers and Reinforced Membranes

In this project, a team of researchers from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute developed high performance, low-cost alkaline conductors which can improve efficiency and lower cost of energy storage and conversion technology. The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute team has developed a highly ion conductive, chemically stable, and mechanically durable alkaline membrane materials. Such membranes will serve as a critical component in electrochemical devices when energy is generated from renewable sources (e.g., sun and wind) or hydrogen fuel. The use of alkaline membrane in electrochemical reactions allows us to replace expensive platinum catalysts with less expensive, earth abundant metals as catalysts, offering huge economic advantages in renewable energy technology.

Stereochemically‐Controlled Fluorinated Copolymers for Selectively Permeable Barrier Applications

Selective oxygen permeability coupled with low water vapor transmission is essential for biomedical and packaging applications requiring controlled oxygen flux under humid conditions. However, most high‐performance barrier polymers depend on perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), whose persistence and regulatory restrictions limit their long‐term applicability. We designed a series of stereocontrolled thiol‐yne‐based polyesters, including both fluorinated and non‐fluorinated variants, for selective oxygen permeability with considerable water barrier performance. Tailoring polymer crystallinity and morphology tuned both oxygen transport and mechanical properties. Fluorinated polymers demonstrated enhanced hydrophobicity and water resistance while maintaining oxygen diffusivity within a range relevant to oxygen‐sensing applications. Structure–property relationships were elucidated through small‐ and wide‐angle X‐ray scattering, revealing semi‐crystalline domains influenced by fluorine content and dithiol chain length. Barrier performance was rigorously evaluated via water vapor transmission rate and dynamic vapor sorption, showing reduced water uptake with increasing dithiol monomer length and crystallinity. In conclusion, this work introduces a PFAS‐free alternative to conventional barrier materials and establishes a tunable materials platform with potential relevance for biomedical devices and packaging systems requiring controlled oxygen permeability.

Energetic Copolymers From LLM-105 and Aliphatic Isocyanates

Energetic polymers typically feature fuel-rich backbones with pendant oxidizing explosophores, which are used to modify pressure and temperature characteristics in energetic formulations. However, these pendant explosophores generally increase sensitivity and decrease the thermal stability of the polymer in the condensed phase. Direct polymerization of insensitive high explosives (IHEs) bearing polymerizable functionalities, such as amines, provides a synthetic platform for deriving tunable energetic materials. Here, this work demonstrates the first direct polymerization of the IHE 2,6-diamino-3,5-dinitropyrazine-1-oxide (LLM-105) with aliphatic isocyanate comonomers to yield an energetic copolyurea (PUa1) and an energetic copolyurea network (PUa2). 1 H and 13 C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirm copolyurea synthesis. PUa1 exhibited branching reactions commonly found in polyurea syntheses, and these side reactions were suppressed in PUa2 through use of a polyfunctional isocyanate. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) demonstrate the energetic IHE based polyurea preserves the energetic decomposition of the parent monomer LLM-105 in PUa1 (1203 J g −1 ) and PUa2 (687 J g −1 ), albeit with reduced thermal stability with peak decomposition temperatures of 235°C and 233°C, respectively. This work presents a new approach for generating energetic polymers from IHE cores with tunable energetic, thermal, and structural characteristics.

Non-Covalent Interactions and Helical Packing in Thiophene-Phenylene Copolymers: Tuning Solid-State Ordering and Charge Transport for Organic Field-Effect Transistors

In this study, we introduce two thiophene-phenylene-thiophene (TPT) polymers designed to leverage noncovalent intramolecular interactions to regulate main-chain conformation and enhance solid-state ordering. By incorporating unsubstituted thiophene (T) or bithiophene (2T) units, we reveal striking divergence in the thermal, morphological, and optoelectronic properties of the resulting films, facilitated by these noncovalent interactions. Using a combination of computational and experimental approaches, we show that annealing yields remarkably different polymer conformations and, consequently, charge transport properties. TPT-T undergoes a significant structural transformation, adopting a more planar backbone conformation and a highly crystalline, edge-on molecular orientation. In contrast, the introduction of a single additional thiophene unit in TPT-2T leads to a more isotropic molecular orientation with a slight preference for face-on alignment, resulting in a heterogeneous film structure that hinders charge transport despite achieving tighter molecular packing. Remarkably, despite being composed of achiral components, TPT-2T develops chirality upon annealing, indicating the formation of a helical conformation. Organic field-effect transistor measurements reveal that the well-ordered alignment in annealed TPT-T films results in higher charge carrier mobility and a narrower distribution of mobility values than in TPT-2T. These findings provide critical insights into the structure−property relationships of conjugated polymers, offering guidance for optimizing molecular design and processing strategies for highperformance organic electronic materials.
