Insensitivity of Control System Performance to Controller and System Parameters

An experimental and theoretical study of the CONDUIT sensitivity tools was conducted. The literature on sensitivity in nonlinear programming was reviewed to see in what ways it could be applied to CONDUIT. One result of this was the conclusion that the current insensitivity measure in CONDUIT is the right one. The question of scaling of the specifications in CONDUIT was also studied. Many simple examples were created, analyzed and, in most cases, solved. However, no general solution to the scaling problem was found. Instead, the appropriate scaling needs to be determined by review of a reasonable number of real aircraft design problems.

Forced flow evaporator for unusual gravity conditions

Low efficiency heat transfer in evaporators subject to unusual gravitational conditions is avoided through the use of a spiral evaporator conduit 12 receiving at an inlet 14 a vaporizable coolant at least partly in the liquid phase. Flow of the coolant through the conduit 12 demists the coolant by centrifuging the liquid phase against a pressurre wall 44 of the conduit 12. Vapor flow 40 induces counterrotating vortices 46, 48 which circulate the liquid phase coolant around the interior of the conduit 12 to wet all surfaces thereof.

Gas-Generator Augmented Expander Cycle Rocket Engine

An augmented expander cycle rocket engine includes first and second turbopumps for respectively pumping fuel and oxidizer. A gas-generator receives a first portion of fuel output from the first turbopump and a first portion of oxidizer output from the second turbopump to ignite and discharge heated gas. A heat exchanger close-coupled to the gas-generator receives in a first conduit the discharged heated gas, and transfers heat to an adjacent second conduit carrying fuel exiting the cooling passages of a primary combustion chamber. Heat is transferred to the fuel passing through the cooling passages. The heated fuel enters the second conduit of the heat exchanger to absorb more heat from the first conduit, and then flows to drive a turbine of one or both of the turbopumps. The arrangement prevents the turbopumps exposure to combusted gas that could freeze in the turbomachinery and cause catastrophic failure upon attempted engine restart.

The support arm's first end and second end are separated from one another with respect to a length dimension of the conduit. Measurement ports provided in the flow obstruction are coupled to points at the exterior wall of the conduit by manifolds extending through the flow obstruction and support arm.

Enceladus Vent Explorer Concept

Our concept, Enceladus Vent Explorer (EVE), is a robotic pathfinder mission to enter these doors. EVE's goals are to descend into erupting conduits up to ~2 km deep, characterize the unknown interior structure of the vent-conduit system, assess the accessibility to the subsurface ocean through the vent-conduit system, potentially reach the liquid interface, and perform astrobiology and volcanology observations in the vent-conduit system. EVE sends two types of modules: Surface Module (SM) and Descent Module (DM). SM is a lander that stays on the surface, while tens of small (~3 kg, 10 cm in width and 30 cm in length) DMs separate from SM, move to a vent, and descend into it. DMs rely on a power and communication link provided by SM through a cable. As the payload volume of DM is extremely limited, each DM can carry only a single miniaturized instrument. This limitation is complemented by heterogeneity. There are several types of DMs, all of which share the common mobility system but carry different instruments. For example, a "scout DM" creates a 3-D map of the geyser system with its stereo cameras and structured light. A "sample return DM" collects particles and ice cores in the vent and deliver them to the mass spectrometer in the SM. An "in-situ science DM" carries science instruments, such as a microscopic imager and a microfluidics chip for biosignature detection. DMs are sent either sequentially or in parallel.

Heat exchanger

A heat exchanger that includes first and second headers, a first flow conduit fluidly connecting the first and second headers to allow for a flow of a first fluid through the heat exchanger, the first flow conduit being bounded by a first generally planar wall section extending between the first and second headers, a second flow conduit to allow for a flow of the second fluid through the heat exchanger, the second flow conduit being bounded by a second generally planar wall section spaced apart from the first generally planar wall section to define a gap therebetween, and a thermally conductive structure arranged within the gap and joined to the first and second generally planar wall sections to transfer heat therebetween. The thermally conductive structure is isolated from the first fluid by the first generally planar wall section and from the second fluid by the second generally planar wall section.

Laser ablation sampling system and method

A method and system for sampling a solid sample material can include the step of mounting the sample material on a support. A sample surface is coated with a surface treatment composition in a dry deposition process. A solvent supply conduit for supplying solvent to the sample surface and a solvent exhaust conduit for withdrawing solvent from the sample surface can be provided. Solvent is flowed from the solvent supply conduit to the surface treatment composition and the sample surface such that the solvent contacts the surface treatment composition. A laser beam is directed from a laser source to the sample and the surface treatment composition. The laser beam will ablate the sample and the surface treatment composition in portions intersected by the laser beam. Ablated sample material enters the solvent liquid and will be transported with the solvent away from the sample surface through the solvent exhaust conduit.

Porous membrane enabled mass spectrometry characterization of microfluidic devices

A system for sampling a liquid includes a sample fluid conduit including a membrane having pores. The membrane prevents the passage of the sample liquid through the pores at a first pressure of the sample liquid in the sample fluid conduit. A surface sampling capture probe has a distal end. The capture probe includes a solvent supply conduit and a solvent exhaust conduit. A solvent composition flowing at the distal end of the capture probe establishes a liquid junction with the membrane and establishes a second pressure within the liquid junction at the membrane. The second pressure is lower than the first pressure. Sample liquid will be drawn through the pores of the membrane by the second pressure at the liquid junction. A method for sampling a liquid and for performing chemical analysis on a liquid are also disclosed.
