Experimental investigation of a shielded complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor (MOS) structure

A shielded integrated complimentary MOS transistor structure is described which is used to prevent field inversion in the region not occupied by the gates and which permits the use of a thinner field oxide, reduces the chip area, and has provision for simplified multilayer connections. The structure is used in the design of a static shift register and results in a 20% reduction in area.

Complementary DMOS-VMOS integrated circuit structure

A high speed CMOS formed on a single semiconductor substrate includes a DMOS having an asymmetric channel and a VMOS with a relatively short channel length. The short channel length of the VMOS is achieved by forming a double diffusion along one edge of a V groove, or ion implanting boron into the apex of the V groove and diffusing a single layer to a relatively deep depth along both edges of the groove.

An investigation of MAGSAT and complementary data emphasizing precambrian shields and adjacent areas of West Africa and South America

Accomplishments with regard to the mapping and analysis of MAGSAT data for the investigation of correlations between the magnetic field characteristics of South American and African shields are reported. Significant results in the interpretation of the global total-field anomalies and the anomaly patterns of Africa and South America are discussed. The central position of the Brazilian shield tends to form a negative total-field anomaly, consistent with findings for shields in equatorial Africa. Sedimentary sequences in the Amazon basin and in the Rio de Janeiro-Sao Paolo areas exhibit positive anomalies, also consistent with equatorial Africa. Results for the Caribbean Sea and Guyana regions are also described.

An investigation of MAGSAT and complementary data emphasizing precambrian shields and adjacent areas of West Africa and South America

Several possible causes for the east-west striping of the MAGSAT anomaly maps are listed and discussed including: (1) the inadequacy of the field model used for core-crustal separation of geomagnetic anomalies; (2) external field noise remaining in the available maps; (3) east-west trends of crustal uplift and depression; (4) east-west trends to convection patterns in the mantle; (5) bands of crustal materials of similar metamorphic grade; (6) variations in the depth of the Curie isotherm; and (7) the data processing techniques used to overcome the absence of tie lines and orbital path of MAGSAT.

An investigation of MAGSAT and complementary data emphasizing precambrian shields and adjacent areas of West Africa and South America

The problems associated with the use of an interactive magnetic modeling program are reported and a publication summarizing the MAGSAT anomaly results for Africa and the possible tectonic associations of these anomalies is provided. An overview of the MAGSAT scalar anomaly map for Africa suggested a correlation of MAGSAT anomalies with major crustal blocks of uplift or depression and different degrees of regional metamorphism. The strongest MAGSAT anomalies in Africa are closely correlated spatially with major tectonic features. Results indicate that the Bangui anomaly may be caused by a central old Precambrian shield, flanked to the north and south by two relatively young sedimentary basins.

Complementary rare earth element patterns in unique achondrites, such as ALHA 77005 and shergottites, and in the earth

Abundances of major, minor, and trace elements are determined in the Antarctic achondrite Allan Hills (ALHA) 77005 via sequential instrumental and radiochemical neutron activation analysis. The rare earth element (REE) abundances of ALHA 77005 reveal a unique chondritic normalized pattern; that is, the REEs are nearly unfractionated from La to Pr at approximately 1.0X chondrites, monotonically increased from Pr to Gd at approximately 3.4X with no Eu anomaly, nearly unfractionated from Gd and Ho and monotonically decreased from Ho to Lu at approximately 2.2X. It is noted that this unique REE pattern of ALHA 77005 can be modeled by a melting process involving a continuous melting and progressive partial removal of melt from a light REE enriched source material. In a model of this type, ALHA 77005 could represent either a crystallized cumulate from such a melt or the residual source material. Calculations show that the parent liquids for the shergottites could also be derived from a light REE enriched source material similar to that for ALHA 77005.

An investigation of MAGSAT and complementary data emphasizing precambrian shields and adjacent areas of West Africa and South America

Some MAGSAT data and preliminary results emphasizing Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean were presented to geologists in Jamaica, Guyana, Brazil, and Argentina who then expressed interest in collaborating on linking computer modeling of MAGSAT data to tectionic and metallogenic interpretation for South America and in making the final interpretation. Modeling continues with the preparation of a synopsis tectonic map of South America and the initiation of semi-final modeling of northern South America.

An investigation of MAGSAT and complementary data emphasizing precambrian shields and adjacent areas of West Africa and South America

There is lack of acceptance of quantitative crustal models by specialists on regional geology because of the problem of east-west banding on MAGSAT anomaly maps. The possibility of some of the Earth's magnetic field being created in the mantle below the Curie isotherm is discussed as well as the need to remove spherical harmonics of degrees less than 15 from the anomaly map. Two dimensional models were produced for northern South America that might be considered as working models. These models suggest that the presumed Amazon River depression is better developed near Belem and in the upper Amazon basin than in the central Amazon basin. An attempt is proposed for separating the core field from the crustal field using a flat-Earth model.

Complementary code and digital filtering for detection of weak VHF radar signals from the mesoscale

The SOUSY-VHF-Radar operates at a frequency of 53.5 MHz in a valley in the Harz mountains, Germany, 90 km from Hanover. The radar controller, which is programmed by a 16-bit computer holds 1024 program steps in core and controls, via 8 channels, the whole radar system: in particular the master oscillator, the transmitter, the transmit-receive-switch, the receiver, the analog to digital converter, and the hardware adder. The high-sensitivity receiver has a dynamic range of 70 dB and a video bandwidth of 1 MHz. Phase coding schemes are applied, in particular for investigations at mesospheric heights, in order to carry out measurements with the maximum duty cycle and the maximum height resolution. The computer takes the data from the adder to store it in magnetic tape or disc. The radar controller is programmed by the computer using simple FORTRAN IV statements. After the program has been loaded and the computer has started the radar controller, it runs automatically, stopping at the program end. In case of errors or failures occurring during the radar operation, the radar controller is shut off caused either by a safety circuit or by a power failure circuit or by a parity check system.

Analysis of heliographic missions complementary to ISPM

Five concepts were formulated, analyzed, and compared for satisfying heliographic science mission objectives both with and without a concurrent International Solar Polar Mission (ISPM) Spacecraft. Key astrodynamic constraints and performance factors are known from literature for the Lagrange point mission and the sun-synchronous earth orbit mission, but are set forth in this paper for the three solar orbiting missions concepts considered. Any of these five missions should be doable at modest cost since no strong cost drivers were encountered in the analyses. The mission to be flown depends on mission capability to meet science measurement needs more than on strong economic factors. Each mission offers special advantages for particular measurement emphasis. Based on selected qualitative mission discriminators, an overall 'best mission' was selected and described in some detail.
