Ion temperature clamping in Wendelstein 7-X electron cyclotron heated plasmas

The neoclassical transport optimization of the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator has not resulted in the predicted high energy confinement of gas fueled electron-cyclotron-resonance-heated (ECRH) plasmas as modelled in (Turkin et al 2011 Phys. Plasmas 18 022505) due to high levels of turbulent heat transport observed in the experiments. The electron-turbulent-heat transport appears non-stiff and is of the electron temperature gradient (ETG)/ion temperature gradient (ITG) type (Weir et al 2021 Nucl. Fusion 61 056001). As a result, the electron temperature T e can be varied freely from 1 keV–10 keV within the range of P ECRH = 1–7 MW, with electron density n e values from 0.1–1.5 × 10 20 m –3 . By contrast, in combination with the broad electron-to-ion energy-exchange heating profile in ECRH plasmas, ion-turbulent-heat transport leads to clamping of the central ion temperature at T i ~ 1.5 keV ± 0.2 keV. In a dedicated ECRH power scan at a constant density of $\langle n_{e} \rangle$ = 7 × 10 19 m –3 , an apparent 'negative ion temperature profile stiffness' was found in the central plasma for (r/a < 0.5), in which the normalized gradient ∇T i /T i decreases with increasing ion heat flux. The experiment was conducted in helium, which has a higher radiative density limit compared to hydrogen, allowing a broader power scan. This 'negative stiffness' is due to a strong exacerbation of turbulent transport with an increasing ratio of T e /T i in this electron-heated plasma. This finding is consistent with electrostatic microinstabilities, such as ITG-driven turbulence. Theoretical calculations made by both linear and nonlinear gyro-kinetic simulations performed by the GENE code in the W7-X three-dimensional geometry show a strong enhancement of turbulence with an increasing ratio of T e /T i . The exacerbation of turbulence with increasing T e /T i is also found in tokamaks and inherently enhances ion heat transport in electron-heated plasmas. This finding strongly affects the prospects of future high-performance gas-fueled ECRH scenarios in W7-X and imposes a requirement for turbulence-suppression techniques.

Square plate with clamped edges under normal pressure producing large deflections

A theoretical analysis is given for the stresses and deflections of a square plate with clamped edges under normal pressure producing large deflections. Values of the bending stress and membrane stress at the center of the plate and at the midpoint of the edge are given for center deflections up to 1.9 times the plate thickness. The shape of the deflected surface is given for low pressures and for the highest pressure considered. Convergence of the solution is considered and it is estimated that the possible error is less than 2 percent. The results are compared with the only previous approximate analysis known to the author and agree within 5 percent. They are also shown to compare favorably with the known exact solutions for the long rectangular plate and the circular plate.

Normal-pressure Tests of Circular Plates with Clamped Edges

A fixture is described for making normal-pressure tests of flat plates 5 inches in diameter in which particular care was taken to obtain rigid clamping at the edges. Results are given for 19 plates, ranging in thickness from 0.015 to 0.072 inch. The center deflections and the extreme-fiber stresses at low pressures were found to agree with theoretical values; the center deflections at high pressures were 4 to 12 percent greater than the theoretical values. Empirical curves are derived of the pressure for the beginning of permanent set as a function of the dimensions of the plate and the tensile properties of the material.

Cyber-Attack Detection for Active Neutral Point Clamped (ANPC) Photovoltaic (PV) Converter using Kalman Filter

With the upgrading of communication technology, cyber threats to power converters are increasing. In this paper, a model-based cyber-attack detection methodology is proposed for the interleaved Active neutral point clamped (ANPC) Photovoltaic (PV) converter. The proposed methodology identifies cyber-attacks using two estimations based on the Kalman filter and the state-space model of the ANPC PV converter. The residual between the two estimations is analyzed from a statistical perspective. Based on the Cumulative Sum (CUSUM) Control Chart, the standard errors shift of the residual is used to identify cyber-attacks. Besides, to validate the feasibility of the proposed methodology, several conditions are considered in the simulation, including white noise in the sensor, irradiance variation, and cyber-attacks in the PV converter. Furthermore, the simulation result demonstrates the proposed method can identify cyber-attacks in the ANPC PV converter.

An Optimized H5 Hysteresis Current Control with Clamped Diodes in Transformer-Less Grid-PV Inverter

With the rise of renewable energy penetration in the grid, photovoltaic (PV) panels are connected to the grid via inverters to supply solar energy. Transformer-less grid-tied PV inverters are gaining popularity because of their improved efficiency, reduced size, and lower costs. However, they can induce a path for leakage currents between the PV and the grid due to the absence of galvanic isolation. This leads to serious electromagnetic interference, loss in efficiency, and safety concerns. The leakage current is primarily influenced by the nature of the common mode voltage (CMV), which is determined by the switching techniques of the inverter. In this paper, a novel inverter topology of Hysteresis Controlled H5 with Two Clamping Diodes (HCH5-D2) is derived. The HCH5-D2 topology helps decouple the AC part (Grid) and DC part (PV) during the freewheeling period to make the CMV constant, thereby reducing the leakage current. Additionally, the extra diodes help reduce voltage spikes generated during the freewheeling period and maintain the CMV at a constant value. Finally, a 2.2 kW grid-connected single-phase HCH5-D2 PV inverter system’s MATLAB simulation is presented, showing better results compared to a traditional H4 inverter.

Asymmetric Buckling of Clamped Shallow

The problem of buckling of clamped shallow spherical shells has recently been considered in several theoretical investigations. Buck-ling loads under uniform external pressure were obtained in these investigations which show a surprisingly good agreement with each other, but show a marked disagreement with available experimental values. In all previous studies it has been assumed that the shell deformations are rotationally symmetric. In this paper, the buckling problem is re-examined by introducing asymmetric modes of deformation. The approach is to superimpose small asymmetric deflections on finite axisymmetric deflections, and to show that the symmetric states of deformation are unstable over certain ranges of load and geometry parameter. Numerical results are obtained by means of a digital computer and are compared with previous theoretical and experimental results.
