A comparison of ceramic and carbon-based reductants for vitrification of low-activity waste

Sucrose is the current baseline additive at the Hanford Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant in Washington, USA to control foaming during waste feed to glass transitions and the redox state of the glass melt. Alternative reductants are being investigated to alleviate strain on effluent treatment from toxic acetonitrile production from incomplete combustion of sucrose. This study evaluates ceramic additive options including B4C, B6Si, SiC and VB2 in simulated low-activity waste feed, as well as coke dust, probing the feed volume expansion during melting as well as the gas evolution. All alternative reductant options examined significantly reduced acetonitrile production, however there was variability in their effectiveness as foam-reducing agents. VB2 and coke at the appropriate ratios were similarly effective as sucrose in controlling both foam volume and glass redox state, but with considerably less acetonitrile production. B4C, B6Si and SiC showed more promising foam control and very little acetonitrile production, however all of the final glasses were over reduced, i.e., Fe2+/FeT = 0.5. These alternative reductant studies provide operational flexibility to the operation of the vitrification plant, as well as options for alternative raw materials in industrial glass melting.

Cell-free bioelectrocatalytic platform for carbon dioxide reduction (Final Technical Report)

The University of Minnesota (UMN) EcoSynBio Team aimed to develop a cell-free, enzyme-based platform for the electro- biocatalytic conversion of CO2 into formate as a platform chemical for further upgrading. This type of bio electrocatalytic process delivers a clean product stream without the need for extensive separation from the electrolyte as in electrochemical synthesis and microbial processes. The reduction reaction is catalyzed by metal-dependent formate dehydrogenases (mFDHs) that are capable of efficient electrocatalytic CO2 reduction without the need of costly co-factors. The development of an efficient, scalable electrobiocatalytic process with high total turnover numbers and viable space time yields, however, was not without its challenges. The UM team has developed a protein-based scaffolding system that facilitates enzyme stabilization and attachment to electrodes along with electron transfer. Yet, although FDHs are highly promising enzymes for cell-free, electrobiochemical CO2 reduction, they are also greatly understudied and especially for applications in electrocatalysis. The UM team used the best described mFDH from Clostridium as its benchmark system and spent significant time and effort in attempting to replicate published data and finally, redesigned a recombinant production system for proper metal co-factor incorporation. The UM team has also identified a small set of new enzyme homologs from extreme microorganisms with superior stabilities that have yielded initial structural data for further engineering. In addition, a new bioelectrocatalytic reactor system has been developed that can be 3D printed and used for enzyme attachment to electrodes. In summary the project has generated critical basic information for the further development of this class of enzymes for the electricity driven reduction of CO2 into formate as platform chemical for upgrading into various other chemicals, including fuels.

Methods and systems for the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide using switchable polarity materials

A method of electrochemically reducing CO2 comprises introducing a first feed stream comprising H2O to a positive electrode of an electrolysis cell comprising the positive electrode, a negative electrode, and a proton conducting membrane. A second feed stream comprising a solvent and a non polar form of a switchable polarity material is directed into a CO2 capture apparatus. A third feed stream comprising CO2 is directed into the CO2 capture apparatus to interact with the second feed stream and form a first product stream comprising the solvent and a polar form of the switchable polarity material. The first product stream is introduced to the negative electrode. A potential difference is applied between the positive electrode and the negative electrode to convert the polar form of the switchable polarity material into CO2 and the non-polar form and to form products from the CO2 and the solvent. A CO2 treatment system is also described.

Long-Term Assessment of Commercial Building Energy and Carbon Emissions in the Northwestern Region Under Future Weather Trend

The future climate significantly impacts building performance and increases uncertainties in energy simulations. A rising temperature trend is expected to heighten cooling loads during summer and result in more carbon emissions. Understanding the impact of future climate on building performance is significant for policymakers to make informed decisions. Building retrofit measures can improve building energy efficiency and reduce operational carbon emissions, yet their effects under future climate conditions have not been fully investigated so far. Thus, we proposed an assessment methodology for evaluating long-term energy consumption and operational carbon reduction potential using a building stock dataset. For this study, commercial buildings in the northwestern (NW) region were utilized to assess the impacts of future climate and building retrofit. In addition, we selected Montana with a cold and dry climate as an example to analyze and discuss the carbon emission reduction potential in buildings. The main findings are: (1) Under future climate trends, changes in energy use intensity (EUI) will fluctuate due to variations in heating and cooling degree-days (HDDs and CDDs) and increasing HDDs will lead to increasing EUI. (2) After applying annual building retrofitting, the long-term EUI reduction potential of buildings in the NW region will decrease with the increasing retrofitting degree, and the short-term EUI reduction potential will be impacted by the change of heating and cooling degree days. (3) In Montana, the long-term carbon intensity reduction potential of retrofitted buildings will decrease under future climate trends with the increasing renewable energy penetration.

Filament Extension Atomization for High Solids Loading in Energy Efficient Spray Drying Systems

We demonstrate that we could scale FEA to reach outputs needed by industrial production, while increasing solids loading of the sprayed product by at least 30% and maintaining equal or better spray powder. After testing a wide range of products, in collaboration with industry partners we decided on our primary spray products of dry whey and WPC-80, two common materials processed and sold by US manufacturers with different parameters. We sprayed these with FEA at solids loadings of 70% for dry whey and 45% for WPC-80 with a spray output with particle sizes similar to industrial particles sizes and reduced variation in particle size. We simultaneously scaled up FEA first with a multi-nip with 6 nips surrounding a central roller with parallel axis of rotation and eventually with a tapered design that solved problems we encountered with our initial design. We were able to achieve output from a single array from our first design of up to 4.7 liters per minute (L/min) and from an array of our second multi-nip of 8 L/min exceeding expectations. This demonstrates that FEA technology can indeed be scaled up to meet the needs of industrial production. More arrays can be added as necessary to meet a wide range of spray dryer designs. We also tested FEA to create dried powders from a small scale (10 L/hour of water removal) spray dryer. Though we were not able to produce large quantities of powder from FEA due to challenges in integration, the powder we produced was higher quality and produced from higher solids loading materials. From our technoeconomic analysis we for a typically sized spray dryer, we estimate a 27% cost reduction and 41% energy and carbon reduction for WPC-80 and a 39-57% cost reduction and 52-76% energy reduction for sweet dry whey (depending on the exact product).

Black carbon emissions and reduction potential in China: 2015–2050

Black carbon is a product of the incomplete combustion of carbonaceous fuels and has significant adverse effects on climate change, air quality, and human health. China has been a major contributor to global anthropogenic black carbon emissions. This study develops a black carbon inventory in China, using 2015 as the base year, and projects annual black carbon emissions in China for the period 2016–2050, under two scenarios: a Reference scenario and an Accelerated Reduction scenario. The study estimates that the total black carbon emissions in China in 2015 were 1100 thousand tons (kt), with residential use being the biggest contributor, accounting for more than half of the total black carbon emissions, followed by coke production, industry, agricultural waste burning, and transportation. This study then projects the total black carbon emissions in China in 2050 to be 278 kt in the Reference scenario and 86 kt in the Accelerated Reduction Scenario. Compared to the Reference scenario, the Accelerated Reduction scenario will achieve much faster and deeper black carbon reductions in all the sectors. The dramatic reductions can be attributed to the fuel switching in the residential sector, faster implementation of high-efficiency emission control measures in the industry, transportation, and coke production sectors, and faster phase-out of agricultural waste open burning. This analysis reveals the high potential of black carbon emission reductions across multiple sectors in China through the next thirty years.

Dual 3D Ceramic Textile Electrodes: Fast Kinetics for Carbon Oxidation Reaction and Oxygen Reduction Reaction in Direct Carbon Fuel Cells at Reduced Temperatures

Abstract Direct carbon fuel cells (DCFCs) are an efficient energy‐conversion technology capable of generating electricity with carbon‐dioxide‐capture chemistry with solid carbon as fuels. The efficiency and performance of DCFCs depend on the kinetics of the carbon oxidation reactions (COR) and the oxygen reduction reactions (ORR), each occurring at anode and cathode, respectively. The limited active sites paired with reduced temperatures greatly decrease the efficiency of the electrochemical reactions. Ultraporous dual‐3D ceramic textiles (dual‐3DCT) are integrated into electrolyte‐supported DCFCs to enhance charge and mass transfer at the electrodes. Improved COR at the anode is achieved by the synergy between the 3DCT NiO–Ce 0.8 Gd 0.2 O 1.95 (GDC) structure and optimal carbon fuel choice. In a comparative study, DCFCs using graphitic carbon (GC) as fuel show the best COR performance when compared to DCFCs utilizing alternative fuels such as carbon black (CB) and activated carbon (AC). The 3DCT Sm 0.5 Sr 0.5 CoO 3‐δ –GDC (SSC–GDC) composite cathode shows electrochemical performance superior to that of the conventional screen‐printed SSC–GDC. A peak power density of 392 mW cm −2 at 600 °C is obtained in a DCFC using the 3DCT‐anode/electrolyte/3DCT‐cathode configuration, an unprecedented value for any reported DCFC as of yet. This points toward promising applications of dual‐3DCT electrodes for reduced‐temperature DCFCs.

Breakthrough innovations in carbon dioxide mineralization for a sustainable future

Greenhouse gas emissions and climate change concerns have prompted worldwide initiatives to lower carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) levels and prevent them from rising in the atmosphere, thereby controlling global warming. Effective CO 2 management through carbon capture and storage is essential for safe and permanent storage, as well as synchronically meeting carbon reduction targets. Lowering CO 2 emissions through carbon utilization can develop a wide range of new businesses for energy security, material production, and sustainability. CO 2 mineralization is one of the most promising strategies for producing thermodynamically stable solid calcium or magnesium carbonates for long-term sequestration using simple chemical reactions. Current advancements in CO 2 mineralization technologies, focusing on pathways and mechanisms using different industrial solid wastes, including natural minerals as feedstocks, are briefly discussed. However, the operating costs, energy consumption, reaction rates, and material management are major barriers to the application of these technologies in CO 2 mineralization. Further, the optimization of operating parameters, tailor-made equipment, and smooth supply of waste feedstocks require more attention to make the carbon mineralization process economically and commercially viable. Here, carbonation mechanisms, technological options to expedite mineral carbonation, environmental impacts, and prospects of CO 2 mineralization technologies are critically evaluated to suggest a pathway for mitigating climate change in the future. The integration of industrial wastes and brine with the CO 2 mineralization process can unlock its potential for the development of novel chemical pathways for the synthesis of calcium or magnesium carbonates, valuable metal recovery, and contribution to sustainability goals while reducing the impact of global warming.

Normal or abnormal? Machine learning for the leakage detection in carbon sequestration projects using pressure field data

The international commitments for atmospheric carbon reduction will require a rapid increase in carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects. The key to any successful CCS project lies in the long term storage and prevention of leakage of stored carbon dioxide (CO 2 ). In addition to being a greenhouse gas, CO 2 leaks reaching the surface can accumulate in low-lying areas resulting in a serious health risk. Among several alternatives, some of the more promising CCS storage formations are depleted oil and gas reservoirs, where the reservoirs had good geological seals prior to hydrocarbon extraction. With more CCS wells coming online, it is imperative to implement permanent, automated monitoring tools. We apply machine learning models to automate the leakage detection process in carbon storage reservoirs using rates of (CO 2 ) injection and pressure data measured by simple harmonic pulse testing (HPT). To validate the feasibility of this machine learning based workflow, we use data from HPT experiments carried out in the Cranfield oil field, Mississippi, USA. The data consist of a series of pulse tests conducted with baseline parameters and with an artificially introduced leak. Here, in this study, we pose the leakage detection task as an anomaly detection problem where deviation from the predicted behavior indicates leaks in the reservoir. Results show that different machine learning architectures such as multi-layer feed forward network, Long Short-Term Memory, and convolutional neural network are able to identify leakages and can provide early warning. These warnings can then be used to take remedial measures.

Modeling and Analysis of a Thermophotovoltaic Integrated Self-Powered Furnace

This work investigates the energy efficiency and carbon reduction potential of self-powered residential building heating equipment using a thermodynamic modeling approach. An integrated thermophotovoltaic power module and residential scale furnace system (40,000 Btu/h) were modeled and studied in detail to assess the influence of different design configurations on primary energy efficiency. Operational characteristics such as total power generation, electrical efficiency, and heat recovery were examined in a self-powered system configuration. A sensitivity analysis was conducted to determine the influence of the electric grid’s carbon dioxide footprint (carbon intensity) and the cost of electricity on the environmental, as well as the economic, benefit associated with the self-powered configuration. Compared with a traditional furnace powered by an electric grid at a carbon intensity of 0.5 kg CO 2eq /kWh EL , the self-powered furnace was shown to decrease the annual carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 550 kg (~75% reduction), while also saving more than USD 200 in utility expenses, annually. Additionally, the carbon emission reduction potential of blending different concentrations of hydrogen in natural gas fuel was also studied.
