Extrinsic n-type doping of Cd 3 As 2 thin films

Cd 3 As 2 provides an excellent platform for studying the physics of three-dimensional Dirac semimetals due to its stability as well as its compatibility with thin film growth. Crystals made using both bulk and thin film synthesis are unintentionally doped n-type, and other than introducing Zn to reduce the carrier concentration, no efforts have been reported to alter this intrinsic doping without major changes to the band structure. Here, group VI elements Te and Se are introduced during epitaxy to increase the electron concentration of the films. Starting from an unintentionally doped electron concentration of 1–2 × 10 17 cm -3 , concentrations of up to 3 × 10 18 cm -3 are achieved. Analysis of Shubnikov–de Haas oscillations reveals good agreement in calculated effective mass and Fermi velocity of highly doped films with unintentionally doped single crystals with similar electron concentrations. The density functional theory is also performed to study the effects of group VI substitutions and confirms no strong perturbations in the electronic structure. This work ultimately demonstrates tunability in the carrier concentration using extrinsic dopants without substantial changes in the band structure, allowing for intentional design of Fermi-level position for device applications.

Origins of anisotropic linear magnetoresistance with isotropic mobility in Cd 3 As 2 films on GaAs$[110]$

Thin film synthesis allows for the potential to orient crystals in different orientations, permitting measurement of orientation-dependent material aspects such as band structures and transport anisotropy. Here, Dirac semimetal Cd 3 As 2 films are epitaxially grown on GaAs$[110]$ substrates, which has a $[001]$ orientation in-plane. Films contain domains of two different c-axis orientations resulting from an aligned a-axis in-plane. Magnetoresistance measurements performed along both $[1\bar{1}0]$ and $[001]$ substrate directions reveal similar mobility and carrier concentration, but much larger magnetoresistance along the $[001]$ direction, which can be explained by the guiding center diffusion model as arising from anisotropic disorder and different atomic spacings.

First-principles studies of the unconventional spin-phonon coupling mediated by spin-orbit coupling in pyrochlore Cd 2 Os 2 O 7

Here, we perform systematic first-principles calculations to investigate the spin-phonon coupling (SPC) mediated by spin-orbit coupling in pyrochlore Cd 2 Os 2 O 7 which has the peculiar all-in-all-out noncollinear magnetic ground state. A large SPC coefficient up to 34 cm –1 is found, showing the potential of using this material in thermal spin devices. We further split the SPC coefficients to contributions from symmetric exchange interaction, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), and the single ion anisotropy. Unlike what was assumed in previous studies, the DMI contributions are rather important for most modes. These results provide insights for the understanding of the SPC in 5d transition metal oxides and useful guidance for the search of excellent spin caloritronic materials.

Chemically and electrically tunable spin polarization in ferroelectric Cd-based hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites

Density functional theory computations are used to predict the electronic structure of Cd-based hybrid organic-inorganic high-T C ferroelectric perovskites with TMCM-CdCl 3 being one representative. Here we report Rashba-Dresselhaus spin splitting in the valence band of these nonmagnetic compounds. Interestingly, we find in computations that the splitting is not necessarily sensitive to the polarization of the material but to the organic molecule itself which opens a way to its chemical tunability through the choice of the molecule. Further chemical tunability of spin splitting is shown to be possible through a substitution of Cl in the CdCl 3 chains as the valence band was found to originate from Cl-Cl weekly bonding orbitals. For example, the substitution of Cl with Br in TMCM-CdCl 3 resulted in a ten times increase of spin splitting. Furthermore, the spin polarization in these materials gives origin to persistent spin textures which are coupled to the polarization direction, and, therefore, can be controlled by the electric field. This is promising for spintronics applications.

Integer quantum Hall effect and enhanced g factor in quantum-confined Cd 3 As 2 films

Here, we investigate the integer quantum Hall effect in Cd 3 ⁢As 2 thin films under conditions of strong to moderate quantum confinement (thicknesses of 10, 12, and 15 nm). In all the films, we observe the integer quantum Hall effect in the spin-polarized lowest Landau level (filling factor v = 1) and at spin-degenerate higher index Landau levels with even filling factors (v = 2,4,6). With increasing quantum confinement, we also observe a lifting of the Landau-level spin degeneracy at v = 3, manifest as the emergence of an anomaly in the longitudinal and Hall resistivities. Tight-binding calculations show that the enhanced g factor likely arises from a combination of quantum confinement and corrections from nearby subbands.

Short-range magnetic correlations in quasicrystalline i -Tb-Cd

Here, we report on elastic and inelastic neutron scattering from single-grain isotopically enriched samples to elucidate the local magnetic correlations between Tb 3+ moments in quasicrystalline i -Tb-Cd. The inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the crystalline electric field excitations demonstrated that the Tb 3+ moments are directed primarily along the local fivefold axes of the Tsai-type cluster as was found for the TbCd 6 approximant phase. Based on the inelastic measurements, we consider a simple Ising-type model for the moment configurations on a single Tb 3+ icosahedron and enumerate the lowest energy moment configurations. We then calculate the diffuse scattering from these configurations and compare with the experimental magnetic diffuse scattering measurements to identify the most likely single cluster moment configurations and find reasonable agreement between the broad features observed in our scattering simulations. We further use a heuristic glass model as well as large-scale Monte-Carlo simulations of a multicluster model to consider the role of higher-order (longer-range) intercluster correlations for magnetic frustration and the magnetic scattering.

Bicircular Light Floquet Engineering of Magnetic Symmetry and Topology and Its Application to the Dirac Semimetal Cd 3 As 2

Here, we show that bicircular light (BCL) is a versatile way to control magnetic symmetries and topology in materials. The electric field of BCL, which is a superposition of two circularly polarized light waves with frequencies that are integer multiples of each other, traces out a rose pattern in the polarization plane that can be chosen to break selective symmetries, including spatial inversion. Using a realistic low-energy model, we theoretically demonstrate that the three-dimensional Dirac semimetal Cd 3 As 2 is a promising platform for BCL Floquet engineering. Without strain, BCL irradiation induces a transition to a noncentrosymmetric magnetic Weyl semimetal phase with tunable energy separation between the Weyl nodes. In the presence of strain, we predict the emergence of a magnetic topological crystalline insulator with exotic unpinned surface Dirac states that are protected by a combination of twofold rotation and time reversal (2') and can be controlled by light.

Heterostructural Alloy Phase Diagram for (Cd 1-x Zn x ) 3 As 2

Alloying the topological semimetal Cd 3 As 2 with Zn 3 As 2 provides a potential route for controlling the electronic properties. We predict the alloy phase diagram from first-principles calculations, considering that both end members have a crystal structure derived from the antifluorite lattice, but with different arrangements of the unoccupied cation sites. To overcome the limitations of the regular solution approximation and to include short-range order effects, we perform Monte Carlo simulations, parameterize the temperature dependence of the mixing enthalpy ΔH m , and perform thermodynamic integration of the free energy. The resulting phase diagram exhibits features that are unique to heterostructural alloy systems and provides computational predictions of solubility limits and composition ranges that are stable against spinodal decomposition.

The effects of antimony incorporation on the optoelectronic properties of Cd(Se,Te) photovoltaics

One historical limitation of CdTe PV devices has been the open circuit voltage (VOC) deficit (difference between theoretical maximum VOC and measured values). While non-radiative recombination at extended structural defects and interfaces negatively impacts VOC, intentionally adding impurities (dopants) to increase the concentration of free carriers in the photovoltaic (PV) absorber material can increase the VOC. In this contribution we present a detailed analysis of the Sb doped CdTe and the Cd(Se,Te) alloy system via electron beam induced current (EBIC) measurements and the presence as well as spatial distribution of defect levels through cathodoluminescence spectrum imaging (CLSI).

Vibrational control of the reaction pathway in the H + CHD 3 → H 2 + CD 3 reaction

An accurate full-dimensional quantum state-to-state simulation of the six-atom title reaction based on first-principles theory is reported. Counterintuitive effects are found: Increasing the energy in the reactant’s CD 3 umbrella vibration reduces the energy in the corresponding product vibration. An in-depth analysis reveals the crucial role of the effective dynamical transition state: Its geometry is controlled by the vibrational states of the reactants and subsequently controls the quantum state distribution of the products. This finding enables generalizing the concept of transition state control of chemical reactions to the quantum state–specific level.

M PX 3 van der Waals magnets under pressure ( M = Mn, Ni, V, Fe, Co, Cd; X = S, Se)

van der Waals antiferromagnets with chemical formula MPX 3 (M = V, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cd; X = S, Se) are superb platforms for exploring the fundamental properties of complex chalcogenides, revealing their structure-property relations and unraveling the physics of confinement. Pressure is extremely effective as an external stimulus, able to tune properties and drive new states of matter. In this review, we summarize experimental and theoretical progress to date with special emphasis on the structural, magnetic, and optical properties of the MPX 3 family of materials. Under compression, these compounds host inter-layer sliding and insulator-to-metal transitions accompanied by dramatic volume reduction and spin state collapse, piezochromism, possible polar metal and orbital Mott phases, as well as superconductivity. Some responses are already providing the basis for spintronic, magneto-optic, and thermoelectric devices. We propose that strain may drive similar functionality in these materials.

Structural and Electronic Properties of Indium-Doped n-type Cd-Se-Te Crystals

Here, we present a comprehensive investigation into the potential of n-type indium-doped cadmium selenide telluride (CST:In) as a high-performance candidate for solar cell applications, without the need for resource-intensive post-growth treatments that are required for CdTe:In. We compared undoped CST and CST:In crystals under different growth conditions, analyzing their structural and electronic properties using x-ray diffraction (XRD), electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), current-voltage (IV) and Hall effect measurements, time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL), optical transmission, and photoluminescence (PL) mapping. The results reveal that as-grown CST:In crystals achieve nearly 100% carrier activation, yielding an electron concentration of 9.5x1018 cm -3 , mobility of 653 cm 2 /V.s and a 5 ns lifetime which approaches the radiative limit. Furthermore, comparison of PL maps from crystal growths having different cooling profiles suggests a strong effect of cooling rate on selenium segregation and cubic/hexagonal/polytype phase distribution. Slower cooling leads to a more homogeneous cubic structure with lower Se segregation, while a faster cooling rate results in increased Se segregation, and twin boundaries and stacking faults with polytypic and hexagonal character.

Mouse models of Ebola virus tolerance and lethality: characterization of CD-1 mice infected with wild-type, guinea pig-adapted, or mouse-adapted virus

Development of lethal models of Ebola virus disease has been achieved by the serial passage of virus isolates from human cases in mice and guinea pigs. Use of mice infected with non-adapted virus has been limited due to the absence of overt clinical disease. In recent years, newly recognized sequelae identified in human cases has highlighted the importance of continued investigations of non-lethal infection both in humans and animal models. Here, we revisit the use of rodent-adapted and non-adapted Ebola virus (EBOV) in mice to investigate infection tolerance and future utility of these models in pathogenesis and therapeutic intervention studies. We found that like non-adapted wild-type EBOV, guinea pig-adapted EBOV resulted in widespread tissue infection, variably associated with tissue pathology, and alterations in clinical and immunological analytes in the absence of overt disease. Notably, infection with either non-lethal variant did not greatly differ from lethal mouse-adapted EBOV until near the time end-point criteria are reached in these mice. Furthermore, these data support future investigations of pathogenesis, convalescence, and sequelae in mouse models of virus tolerance.
