Electric dipole moment constraints on CP-violating heavy-quark Yukawas at next-to-leading order

Electric dipole moments are sensitive probes of new phases in the Higgs Yukawa couplings. We calculate the complete two-loop QCD anomalous dimension matrix for the mixing of CP-odd scalar and tensor operators and apply our results for a phenomenological study of CP violation in the bottom and charm Yukawa couplings. We find large shifts of the induced Wilson coefficients at next-to-leading-logarithmic order. Using the experimental bound on the electric dipole moments of the neutron and mercury, we update the constraints on CP-violating phases in the bottom and charm quark Yukawas.

Search for CP violating top quark couplings in pp collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

Results are presented from a search for CP violation in top quark pair production, using proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data used for this analysis consist of final states with two charged leptons collected by the CMS experiment, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{−1}$. The search uses two observables, $ \mathcal{O} _{1}$ and $ \mathcal{O} _{3}$, which are Lorentz scalars. The observable $ \mathcal{O} _{1}$ is constructed from the four-momenta of the charged leptons and the reconstructed top quarks, while $ \mathcal{O} _{3}$ consists of the four-momenta of the charged leptons and the b quarks originating from the top quarks. Asymmetries in these observables are sensitive to CP violation, and their measurement is used to determine the chromoelectric dipole moment of the top quark. The results are consistent with the expectation from the standard model.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Search for CP violation in ${D}_{(s)}^{+}$ → K - K + K + decays

A search for direct CP violation in the Cabibbo-suppressed decay \( {D}_s^{+} \) → K - K + K + and in the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed decay D + → K - K + K + is reported. The analysis is performed with data collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.6 fb - 1 . The search is conducted by comparing the \( {D}_{(s)}^{+} \) and \( {D}_{(s)}^{-} \) Dalitz-plot distributions through a model-independent binned technique, based on fits to the K - K + K + invariant-mass distributions, with a total of 0.97 (1.27) million \( {D}_s^{+} \) ( D + ) signal candidates. The results are given as p -values for the hypothesis of CP conservation and are found to be 13.3% for the \( {D}_s^{+} \) → K - K + K + decay and 31.6% for the D + → K - K + K + decay. No evidence for CP violation is observed in these decays.

Search for CP violation in the phase space of D 0 → π⁻π⁺π 0 decays with the energy test

A search for CP violation in D 0 → π - π + π 0 decays is reported, using pp collision data collected by the LHCb experiment from 2015 to 2018 corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb - 1 . An unbinned model-independent approach provides sensitivity to local CP violation within the two-dimensional phase space of the decay. The method is validated using the Cabibbo-favoured channel D 0 → K - π + π 0 and background regions of the signal mode. The results are consistent with CP symmetry in this decay.

Search for lepton-flavor-violating tau-lepton decays to ℓγ at Belle

Charged lepton flavor violation is forbidden in the Standard Model but possible in several new physics scenarios. In many of these models, the radiative decays τ ± → ℓ ± γ (ℓ = e, μ) are predicted to have a sizeable probability, making them particularly interesting channels to search at various experiments. An updated search via τ ± → ℓ ± γ using full data of the Belle experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 988 fb –1 , is reported for charged lepton flavor violation. No significant excess over background predictions from the Standard Model is observed, and the upper limits on the branching fractions, B(τ ± → μ ± γ) ≤ 4.2 × 10 –8 and B(τ ± → e ± γ) ≤ 5.6 × 10 –8 , are set at 90% confidence level.

CP-violating axion interactions II: axions as dark matter

Axions provide a solution to the strong CP problem and are excellent dark matter candidates. The presence of additional sources of CP violation, for example to account for the matter/antimatter asymmetry of the universe, can lead to CP-violating interactions between axions and Standard Model fields. In case axions form a coherent dark matter background, this leads to time-oscillating fundamental constants such as the fine-structure constant and particle masses. In this work we compare the sensitivity of various searches for CP-odd axion interactions. These include fifth-force experiments, searches for time-oscillating constants induced by axion dark matter, and direct limits from electric dipole moment experiments. We show that searches for oscillating constants can outperform fifth-force experiments in the regime of small axion masses, but, in general, do not reach the sensitivity of electric dipole moment experiments.

Search for CP violation in events with top quarks and Z bosons at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 and 13.6 TeV

A search for the violation of the charge-parity (CP) symmetry in the production of top quarks in association with Z bosons is presented, using events with at least three charged leptons and additional jets. The search is performed in a sample of proton-proton collision data collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in 2016–2018 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV and in 2022 at 13.6 TeV, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 173 fb –1 . For the first time in this final state, observables that are odd under the CP transformation are employed. Also for the first time, physics-informed machine-learning techniques are used to construct these observables. While for standard model (SM) processes the distributions of these observables are predicted to be symmetric around zero, CP-violating modifications of the SM would introduce asymmetries. Two CP-odd operators $\mathcal{O}$$^{I}_{tW}$ and $\mathcal{O}$$^{I}_{tZ}$ in the SM effective field theory are considered that may modify the interactions between top quarks and electroweak bosons. The obtained results are consistent with the SM prediction within two standard deviations, and exclusion limits on the associated Wilson coefficients of –2.7 < $c$$^{I}_{tW}$ < 2.5 and –0.2 < $c$$^{I}_{tZ}$ < 2.0 and are set at 95 % confidence level. The largest discrepancy is observed in $c$$^{I}_{tZ}$ where data is consistent with positive values, with an observed local significance with respect to the SM hypothesis of 2.5 standard deviations, when only linear terms are considered.

Strong 𝐶⁢𝑃 violation and large-𝑁 𝑐 spin-flavor symmetry

We revisit the contribution of the QCD $\bar{𝜃}$ term to the 𝐶⁢𝑃-violating pion-nucleon couplings and the nucleon electric dipole moment in a combined large-𝑁 𝑐 and chiral perturbation theory framework. In particular, we approach this issue through the emergent spin-flavor symmetry of the baryon sector at large but finite 𝑁 𝑐 . We obtain good agreement with previous analyses for the pion-nucleon couplings and show that the large-𝑁 𝑐 framework indicates that tree-level contributions to the electric dipole moment possibly play a dominant role. The spin-flavor symmetry also enables us to provide novel constraints on 𝐶⁢𝑃-violating pion-Δ couplings, as well as the Δ electric dipole moment and Δ⁢𝑁 transition moment.

Sensitivity of EDM experiments in paramagnetic atoms and molecules to hadronic CP violation

Experiments searching for the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the electron d e utilize atomic/molecular states with one or more uncompensated electron spins, and these paramagnetic systems have recently achieved remarkable sensitivity to d e . If the source of CP violation resides entirely in the hadronic sector, the two-photon exchange processes between electrons and the nucleus induce CP-odd semileptonic interactions, parametrised by the Wilson coefficient C SP , and provide the dominant source of EDMs in paramagnetic systems instead of d e . We evaluate the C SP coefficients induced by the leading hadronic sources of CP violation, namely nucleon EDMs and CP-odd pion-nucleon couplings, by calculating the nucleon-number-enhanced CP-odd nuclear scalar polarisability, employing chiral perturbation theory at the nucleon level and the Fermi-gas model for the nucleus. This allows us to translate the ACME EDM limits from paramagnetic ThO into novel independent constraints on the QCD theta term |$\bar θ$| < 3 × 10 –8 , proton EDM |d p | < 2 × 10 –23 e cm, isoscalar CP-odd pion-nucleon coupling |$\bar g$$^{(1)}_{πNN}$| < 4 × 10 –10 , and color EDMs of quarks |$\tilde d$ u -$\tilde $d d | < 2 × 10 –24 cm. We note that further experimental progress with EDM experiments in paramagnetic systems may allow them to rival the sensitivity of EDM experiments with neutrons and diamagnetic atoms to these quantities.

Measurement of the branching fraction and search for CP violation in D 0 → K $^{0}_{S}$ K $^{0}_{S}$ ⁢π + ⁢π - decays at Belle

We measure the branching fraction for the Cabibbo-suppressed decay D 0 → K $^{0}_{S}$ K $^{0}_{S}$ ⁢π + ⁢π - and search for CP violation via a measurement of the CP asymmetry A CP as well as the T-odd triple-product asymmetry a$^{T}_{CP}$. We use 922 fb -1 of data recorded by the Belle experiment, which ran at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + ⁢e - collider. The branching fraction is measured relative to the Cabibbo-favored normalization channel D 0 → K $^{0}_{S}$ ⁢π + ⁢π - ; the result is $\mathscr{B}$⁡( D 0 → K $^{0}_{S}$ K $^{0}_{S}$ ⁢π + ⁢π - )=[4.79±0.08⁢(stat)±0.10⁢(syst)±0.31⁢(norm)]×10 -4 , where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is from uncertainty in the normalization channel. We also measure A CP =[-2.51±1.44⁢(stat)$^{+0.11}_{-0.10}$⁢(syst)]%, and a$^{T}_{CP}$=[-1.95±1.42⁢(stat)$^{+0.14}_{-0.12}⁢$(syst)]%. These results show no evidence of CP violation.

𝑇-invariance violation in neutrino oscillations and matter effects

We investigate the impact of matter effects on 𝑇 (time-reversal)-odd observables, making use of the quantum-mechanical formalism of neutrino-flavor evolution. We attempt to be comprehensive and pedagogical. Matter-induced 𝑇-invariance violation (TV) is qualitatively different from, and more subtle than, matter-induced 𝐶⁢𝑃 (charge-parity)-invariance violation. If the matter distribution is symmetric relative to the neutrino production and detection points, matter effects will not introduce any new TV. However, if there is intrinsic TV, matter effects can modify the size of the 𝑇-odd observable. On the other hand, if the matter distribution is not symmetric, there is genuine matter-induced TV. For Earth-bound long-baseline oscillation experiments, these effects are small. This remains true for unrealistically-asymmetric matter potentials (for example, we investigate the effects of “hollowing out” 50% of the DUNE neutrino trajectory). More broadly, we explore consequences, or lack thereof, of asymmetric matter potentials on oscillation probabilities. While fascinating in their own right, 𝑇-odd observables are currently of limited practical use, due in no small part to a dearth of intense, well-characterized, high-energy electron-neutrino beams. Further in the future, however, intense, high-energy muon storage rings might become available and allow for realistic studies of 𝑇-invariance in neutrino oscillations.

Probing C P Violation with Neutrino Disappearance Alone

The best way to probe C P violation in the lepton sector is with long-baseline accelerator neutrino experiments in the appearance mode: the appearance of ν e in predominantly ν μ beams. Here we show that it is possible to discover C P violation with disappearance experiments only, by combining JUNO for electron neutrinos and DUNE or Hyper-Kamiokande for muon neutrinos. While the maximum sensitivity to discover C P is quite modest ( 1.6 σ with 6 years of JUNO and 13 years of DUNE), some values of δ may be disfavored by > 3 σ depending on the true value of δ . Nuclear Schiff Moments and CP Violation

This article reviews the calculation of nuclear Schiff moments, which one must know in order to interpret experiments that search for time-reversal-violating electric dipole moments in certain atoms and molecules. After briefly reviewing the connection between dipole moments and CP violation in and beyond the Standard Model of particle physics; Schiff's theorem, which concerns the screening of nuclear electric dipole moments by electrons; Schiff moments; and experiments to measure dipole moments in atoms and molecules, this review examines attempts to compute Schiff moments in nuclei such as 199 Hg and octupole-deformed isotopes such as 225 Ra, which are particularly useful in experiments. It then turns to ab initio nuclear-structure theory, describing ways in which both the in-medium similarity renormalization group and coupled-cluster theory can be used to compute important Schiff moments more accurately than the less controlled methods that have been applied so far.

Variant Nelson-Barr mechanism with minimal flavor violation

Within the general framework of using spontaneous CP violation to solve the strong CP problem, we construct a variant Nelson-Barr model in which the Standard Model (SM) quark contribution to the strong CP phase is cancelled by new heavy QCD-charged fermions. This cancellation is ensured by choosing conjugate representations for the new colored states under the same global flavor symmetry of SM quarks. Choosing the global flavor symmetry to be that of minimal flavor violation, we suppress higher-order corrections to the strong CP phase to well below current experimental constraints. More than two dozen massless Goldstone bosons emerge from spontaneous flavor symmetry breaking, which yield strong astrophysical constraints on the symmetry breaking scale. In the early universe, the Goldstone bosons can be thermally produced from their interactions with the heavy colored fermions and contribute to ΔN eff at a measurable level. As a function of reheating temperature, the predicted ΔN eff shows an interesting plateau behavior we dub the “flavor stairway”, which encodes information about the SM quark flavor structure.

Search for charged lepton flavor violating decays of $\Upsilon (1S)$

We present a search for the charged lepton-flavor-violating decays Υ(1S) → ℓ ± ℓ' ∓ and radiative charged lepton-flavour-violating decays Υ(1S) → γ ℓ±ℓ'∓ [ℓ,ℓ' = e, μ, τ] using the 158 million Υ(2S) sample collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB collider. This search uses Υ(1S) mesons produced in Υ(2S) → π + π – Υ(1S) transitions. We do not find any significant signal, so we provide upper limits on the branching fractions at the 90% confidence level.

A search for R-parity-violating supersymmetry in final states containing many jets in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for R-parity-violating supersymmetry in final states with high jet multiplicity is presented. The search uses 140 fb –1 of proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider. The results are interpreted in the context of R-parity-violating supersymmetry models that feature prompt gluino-pair production decaying directly to three jets each or decaying to two jets and a neutralino which subsequently decays promptly to three jets. No significant excess over the Standard Model expectation is observed and exclusion limits at the 95% confidence level are extracted. Gluinos with masses up to 1800 GeV are excluded when decaying directly to three jets. In the cascade scenario, gluinos with masses up to 2340 GeV are excluded for a neutralino with mass up to 1250 GeV.

No significant signals are observed and upper limits of $$ {\displaystyle \begin{array}{c}\mathcal{B}\left({B}^0\to {K}^{\ast 0}{\mu}^{+}{e}^{-}\right)<5.7\times {10}^{-9}\left(6.9\times {10}^{-9}\right),\\ {}\mathcal{B}\left({B}^0\to {K}^{\ast 0}{\mu}^{-}{e}^{+}\right)<6.8\times {10}^{-9}\left(7.9\times {10}^{-9}\right),\\ {}\mathcal{B}\left({B}^0\to {K}^{\ast 0}{\mu}^{\pm }{e}^{\mp}\right)<10.1\times {10}^{-9}\left(11.7\times {10}^{-9}\right),\\ {}\mathcal{B}\left({B}_s^0\to \phi {\mu}^{\pm }{e}^{\mp}\right)<16.0\times {10}^{-9}\left(19.8\times {10}^{-9}\right)\end{array}} $$ are set at 90% (95%) confidence level. These results constitute the world’s most stringent limits to date, with the limit on the decay \( {B}_s^0 \) → Φμ ± e ∓ the first being set. In addition, limits are reported for scalar and left-handed lepton-flavour violating New Physics scenarios.

Searches for lepton-flavour-violating decays of the Higgs boson into $eτ$ and $μτ$ in $ \sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

This paper presents direct searches for lepton flavour violation in Higgs boson decays, H → eτ and H → μτ, performed using data collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The searches are based on a data sample of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb –1 . Leptonic (τ → ℓν ℓ ν τ ) and hadronic (τ → hadrons ν τ ) decays of the τ-lepton are considered. Two background estimation techniques are employed: the MC-template method, based on data-corrected simulation samples, and the Symmetry method, based on exploiting the symmetry between electrons and muons in the Standard Model backgrounds. No significant excess of events is observed and the results are interpreted as upper limits on lepton-flavour-violating branching ratios of the Higgs boson. The observed (expected) upper limits set on the branching ratios at 95% confidence level, $\mathcal{B}$(H → eτ) < 0.20% (0.12%) and $\mathcal{B}$(H → μτ ) < 0.18% (0.09%), are obtained with the MC-template method from a simultaneous measurement of potential H → eτ and H → μτ signals. The best-fit branching ratio difference, $\mathcal{B}$(H → μτ) → $\mathcal{B}$(H → eτ), measured with the Symmetry method in the channel where the τ-lepton decays to leptons, is (0.25 ± 0.10)%, compatible with a value of zero within 2.5σ.
