Verification and Validation Testing of the Bridle and Umbilical Device for Mars Science Laboratory

The Bridle Umbilical Device (BUD) subsystem is used during the Skycrane maneuver of the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) during the final phases of the Entry Descent and Landing (EDL). During this phase the BUD subsystem will control the deployment of the MSL Rover from the Descent Stage. This paper covers the verification and validation testing of the subsystem. Testing included component through full system level testing. Testing ranged from simple bench top extraction tests to full system deploy drop test that included external disturbances such as the Rover mobility impulse. This paper will discuss the test that were performed, why they were performed and how these test results were used in the overall Verification and Validation of the MSL Skycrane phase.

A Flexible Multibody Approach to Space Launch System Liftoff Pad Separation with Umbilical Disconnect

A flexible multibody dynamic framework is applied to the Space Launch System(SLS)liftoff Coupled Loads Analysis(CLA), enabling computational efficiencies and systematic inclusion of component nonlinearities. This work simulates the SLS liftoff transient pad separation event inclusive of umbilical disconnects and preload strain energy release (twang). For this system level nonlinear dynamic simulation, the flexible multibody framework provides a systematic approach for the addition of component specific algorithms to enforce the subject nonlinearities. As such, the complexities associated with the nonlinear CLA are greatly reduced, facilitating simplified bookkeeping as well as accelerating the execution of the nonlinear time-domain simulations.

Multi-User Spaceport Umbilical Low Force Disconnect

This project designed and fabricated a prototype model of an Umbilical Low Force Disconnect (LFD). Traditional quick disconnects (QD) have a high separation force (SF) when pressurized due to the axial flow path through the QD.

Umbilical disconnect actuator

Contamination of sensitive equipment when squibs are fired is prevented by O-rings which retain the debris of squib discharge within the disconnect device.

Mars penetrator umbilical

The device proposed to gather subsurface data on the planet Mars is a ballistic probe which penetrates the soil after a free fall through the Martian atmosphere. Highlights of the design, development, and testing of several features of the Mars Surface Penetration Probe are outlined.

Optical data transmission technology for fixed and drag-on STS payloads umbilicals. Volume 1: Executive summary

The feasibility of using optical data handling methods to transmit payload checkout and telemetry is discussed. Optical communications are superior to conventional communication systems for the following reasons: high data capacity optical channels; small and light weight optical cables; and optical signal immunity to electromagnetic interference. Task number one analyzed the ground checkout data requirements that may be expected from the payload community. Task number two selected the optical approach based on the interface requirements, the location of the interface, the amount of time required to reconfigure hardware, and the method of transporting the optical signal. Task number three surveyed and selected optical components for the two payload data link. Task number four makes a qualitative comparison of the conventional electrical communication system and the proposed optical communication system.

Latching Mechanism for Umbilical Connectors

Electromechanical interface transfers electric power, data and coolant from one system to another. Motor-actuated jackscrew moves connector on active half of interface to mating connector on passive half. Originally suggested for spacecraft, concept adaptable to underwater connections.

Hyperbolic umbilic diffraction catastrophe and rainbow scattering from spheroidal drops

Short-wavelength scattering from drops whose shapes closely approximate that of an oblate spheroid with a vertical short or symmetry axis have been studied. The drops were illuminated by a horizontally propagating gaussian beam with a wavelength of 633 nm. The drops were observed to scatter in the horizontal rainbow region with patterns like those of hyperbolic-umblic (classification D4(+)) diffraction catastrophes. Visible D4(+) diffraction patterns observed previously include light transmitted by frosted glass surfaces and by liquid lenses clinging to tilted glass plates.

Adaptive servo control for umbilical mating

Robotic applications at Kennedy Space Center are unique and in many cases require the fime positioning of heavy loads in dynamic environments. Performing such operations is beyond the capabilities of an off-the-shelf industrial robot. Therefore Robotics Applications Development Laboratory at Kennedy Space Center has put together an integrated system that coordinates state of the art robotic system providing an excellent easy to use testbed for NASA sensor integration experiments. This paper reviews the ways of improving the dynamic response of the robot operating under force feedback with varying dynamic internal perturbations in order to provide continuous stable operations under variable load conditions. The goal is to improve the stability of the system with force feedback using the adaptive control feature of existing system over a wide range of random motions. The effect of load variations on the dynamics and the transfer function (order or values of the parameters) of the system has been investigated, more accurate models of the system have been determined and analyzed.

Use of control umbilicals as a deployment mode for free flying telerobotic work systems

Work to date on telerobotic work systems for use in space generally consider two deployment modes, free flying, or fixed within a limited work envelope. Control tethers may be employed to obtain a number of operational advantages and added flexibility in the basing and deployment of telerobotic work systems. Use of a tether allows the work system to be separated into two major modules, the remote work package and the control module. The Remote Work Package (RWP) comprises the free flying portion of the work system while the Control Module (CM) remains at the work system base. The chief advantage of this configuration is that only the components required for completion of the work task must be located at the work site. Reaction mass used in free flight is stored at the Control module and supplied to the RWP through the tether, eliminating the need for the RWP to carry it. The RWP can be made less massive than a self contained free flying work system. As a result, reaction mass required for free flight is lower than for a self contained free flyer.

Umbilical mechanism

Apparatus is described for automatically mating a pair of connectors and protecting them prior to mating, which minimizes weight and uses relatively simple and reliable mechanisms. Lower and upper connectors (24, 26) are held in lower and upper parts (14, 16) of a housing, with the upper connector mounted on a carrier (32) that is motor driven to move down and mate the connectors. A pair of movable members (36, 38) serve as shields, as coarse alignment aids, and as force transmitters. The movable members are pivotally mounted at the bottom of the upper housing, and as the carrier moves down it pivots the members out of the way. The movable members have socket elements (116) that closely receive pin elements (120) on the lower housing part, to coarsely align the connectors and to react mating and unmating forces between the housings. The carrier has a pair of plate portions (60, 62) with slots (64), and the movable members have cam followers engaged with the slot walls, to move the members with precision. The carrier plate-like portions engage follower members (82) that pivot open lower shield parts (44, 46) covering the lower connector, which is mounted on four stacks of Belleville washers (142).
