Improving missing transverse momentum estimation with a deep neural network

At hadron colliders, the net transverse momentum of particles that do not interact with the detector (missing transverse momentum, $^→_𝑝$$^{miss}_{T}$) is a crucial observable in many analyses. In the standard model, $^→_𝑝$$^{miss}_{T}$ originates from neutrinos. Many beyond-the-standard-model particles, such as dark matter candidates, are also expected to leave the experimental apparatus undetected. This paper presents a novel deep neural network based $^→_𝑝$$^{miss}_{T}$ estimator, DeepMET, developed by the CMS Collaboration at the LHC. The DeepMET algorithm produces a weight for each reconstructed particle based on its properties. The estimator is based on the negative vector sum of the weighted transverse momenta of all reconstructed particles in an event. Compared with other estimators currently employed by CMS, DeepMET improves the $^→_𝑝$$^{miss}_{T}$ resolution by 10%–30%, shows improvement for a wide range of final states, is easier to train, and is more resilient against the effects of additional proton-proton interactions accompanying the collision of interest.

Modified coherence and the transverse extent of jets

We present a study of the transverse size of parton showers and their diminishing interaction with the medium in the high virtuality stage of jet evolution. We consider the process of a hard quark produced in deep inelastic scattering off a large nucleus. Single gluon radiation from this quark, in the absence of scattering, is rederived using wave packets. This allows for a derivation of the quantum uncertainty size of the hard quark, at the point of splitting. This uncertainty size is then incorporated within a Monte Carlo shower routine yielding transverse shower sizes noticeably larger than the classical antenna size of the shower. No clear relation is found between the full uncertainty size of the shower and the virtuality of the originating parton. The single gluon emission from the hard quark is then reanalyzed for the case of single rescattering off the remainder of the nucleus. A relation is derived between the jet transport coefficient $\hat{𝑞}$ and the gluon Transverse momentum-dependent parton distribution function (gTMDPDF). Solving this relation, for a simple case, clearly demonstrates the weakening of $\hat{𝑞}$ with the virtuality of the hard splitting parton.

Clifford Hierarchy Stabilizer Codes: Transversal Non-Clifford Gates and Magic States

A fundamental problem in fault-tolerant quantum computation is the tradeoff between universality and dimensionality, exemplified by the the Bravyi-König bound for $n$-dimensional topological stabilizer codes. In this work, we extend topological Pauli stabilizer codes to a broad class of $n$-dimensional Clifford hierarchy stabilizer codes. These codes correspond to the $(n+1)$D Dijkgraaf-Witten gauge theories with non-Abelian topological order. We construct transversal non-Clifford gates through automorphism symmetries represented by cup products. In 2D, we obtain the first transversal non-Clifford logical gates including T and CS for Clifford stabilizer codes, using the automorphism of the twisted $\mathbb{Z}_2^3$ gauge theory (equivalent to $\mathbb{D}_4$ topological order). We also combine it with the just-in-time decoder to fault-tolerantly prepare the logical T magic state in $O(d)$ rounds via code switching. In 3D, we construct a transversal logical $\sqrt{\text{T}}$ gate in a non-Clifford stabilizer code at the third level of the Clifford hierarchy, located on a tetrahedron corresponding to a twisted $\mathbb{Z}_2^4$ gauge theory. Furthermore, our constructions surpass the Bravyi-König bound by achieving the logical gates in the $(n+1)$-th level of Clifford hierarchy in $n$ spatial dimension.

Single shot cathode transverse momentum imaging in high brightness photoinjectors

In state of the art photoinjector electron sources, thermal emittance from photoemission dominates the final injector emittance. Therefore, low thermal emittance cathode developments and diagnostics are very important. Conventional thermal emittance measurements for the high gradient gun are time-consuming and thus thermal emittance is not measured as frequently as quantum efficiency during the lifetime of photocathodes, although both are important properties for the photoinjector optimizations. In this paper, a single shot measurement of photoemission transverse momentum, i.e., thermal emittance per rms laser spot size, is proposed for photocathode rf guns. By tuning the gun solenoid focusing, the electrons’ transverse momenta at the cathode are imaged to a downstream screen, which enables a single shot measurement of both the rms value and the detailed spectra of the photoelectrons’ transverse momenta. Both simulations and proof of principle experiments are reported.

Origin of transverse voltages generated by thermal gradients and electric fields in ferrimagnetic-insulator/heavy-metal bilayers

We compare thermal-gradient-driven transverse voltages in ferrimagnetic-insulator/heavy-metal bilayers (Tm 3 Fe 5 O 12 /W and Tm 3 Fe 5 O 12 /Pt) to corresponding electrically driven transverse resistances at and above room temperature. We find for Tm 3 Fe 5 O 12 /W that the thermal and electrical effects can be explained by a common spin-current detection mechanism, the physics underlying spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR). However, for Tm 3 Fe 5 O 12 /Pt the ratio of the electrically driven transverse voltages (planar Hall signal/anomalous Hall signal) is much larger than the ratio of corresponding thermal-gradient signals, a result which is very different from expectations for a SMR-based mechanism alone. Here, we ascribe this difference to a proximity-induced magnetic layer at the Tm 3 Fe 5 O 12 /Pt interface.

Spectral emission properties of a nitrogen-doped diamond (001) photocathode: Hot electron transport and transverse momentum filtering

The electron emission properties of a single-crystal nitrogen-doped diamond(001) photocathode inserted in a 10 kV DC photoelectron gun are determined using a tunable (235–410 nm) ultraviolet laser radiation source for photoemission from both the back nitrogen-doped substrate face and the front homoepitaxially grown and undoped diamond crystal face. Here, the measured spectral trends of the mean transverse energy and quantum efficiency of the emitted electrons are both anomalous and nonmonotonic, but are shown to be consistent with (i) the known physics of electron photoexcitation from the nitrogen substitution states into the conduction bands of diamond, (ii) the energy position and dispersion characteristics of the conduction bands of diamond in the (001) emission direction, (iii) the effective electron affinity of the crystal faces, (iv) the strong electron-(optical)phonon coupling in diamond, and (v) the associated hot electron transport dynamics under energy equipartition with the optical phonons. Notably, the observed hot electron emission is shown to be restricted parallel to the photocathode surface by the low transverse effective masses of the emitting band states—a transverse momentum filtering effect.

Projections of two-particle correlations onto transverse rapidity in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV at STAR

Two-particle correlation measurements projected onto two-dimensional, transverse rapidity coordinates (y T1 ,y T2 ), allow access to dynamical properties of the QCD medium produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions that angular correlation measurements are not sensitive to. Here, we report non-identified charged-particle correlations for Au + Au minimum-bias collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV taken by the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC). Correlations are presented as 2D functions of transverse rapidity for like-sign, unlike-sign and all charged-particle pairs, as well as for particle pairs whose relative azimuthal angles lie on the near-side, the away-side, or at all relative azimuth. The correlations are constructed using charged particles with transverse momentum p T ≥ 0.15 GeV/c, pseudorapidity from –1 to 1, and azimuthal angles from –π to π. The significant correlation structures that are observed evolve smoothly with collision centrality. The major correlation features include a saddle shape plus a broad peak with maximum near y T ≈ 3, corresponding to p T ≈ 1.5 GeV/c. The broad peak is observed in both like- and unlike-sign charge combinations and in near- and away-side relative azimuthal angles. The all-charge, all-azimuth correlation measurements are compared with the theoretical predictions of HIJING and EPOS. The results indicate that the correlations for peripheral to mid-central collisions can be approximately described as a superposition of nucleon + nucleon collisions with minimal effects from the QCD medium. Strong medium effects are indicated in mid- to most-central collisions.

Nonequilibrium effects and transverse spherocity in ultrarelativistic proton-nucleus collisions

We investigate the effects of nonequilibrium dynamics in small colliding systems by comparing a nonequilibrium transport approach, Parton-Hadron-String Dynamics (PHSD), with a (2+1)-dimensional viscous hydrodynamic model, VISHNew. Focusing on p + Pb collisions at energies available at the Large Hadron Collider, we extract the initial conditions for the hydrodynamic model from PHSD, in order to reduce the impact of the early out-of-equilibrium dynamics and focus on the traces of nonequilibrium in the ensuing medium evolution. We find that in the transport approach quantities like energy density and bulk viscous pressure are highly inhomogeneous on the transverse plane during the whole evolution, whereas the hydrodynamic simulations dissolve more efficiently the initial spatial irregularities, still keeping a high degree of inhomogeneity due to the smaller size and lifetime of the medium produced in p + Pb collisions with respect to heavy-ion reactions. As a first step that will help to identify the impact of these nonequilibrium effects on final observables in proton-nucleus collisions, we perform an analysis of the transverse spherocity, an event-shape observable able to distinguish between jetty and isotropic configurations of transverse momenta. We found that the spherocity distribution in PHSD is slightly shifted towards the isotropic limit with respect to the hydrodynamic result. Even though this dissimilarity is partially due to the difference in the final charged particle production, it mainly comes from the different description within the two frameworks of the medium produced in small colliding systems. This finding supports the idea that multidifferential measurements, such as those based on event categorization according to multiplicity and spherocity, are useful to study final-state observables in ultrarelativistic proton-nucleus collisions.

Two-particle transverse momentum correlations in p p and p -Pb collisions at energies available at the CERN Large Hadron Collider

Two-particle transverse momentum differential correlators, recently measured in Pb-Pb collisions at energies available at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), provide an additional tool to gain insights into particle production mechanisms and infer transport properties, such as the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density, of the medium created in Pb-Pb collisions. The longitudinal long-range correlations and the large azimuthal anisotropy measured at low transverse momenta in small collision systems, namely pp and p-Pb, at LHC energies resemble manifestations of collective behavior. This suggests that locally equilibrated matter may be produced in these small collision systems, similar to what is observed in Pb-Pb collisions. In this work, the same two-particle transverse momentum differential correlators are exploited in pp and p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV and $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV, respectively, to seek evidence for viscous effects. Specifically, the strength and shape of the correlators are studied as a function of the produced particle multiplicity to identify evidence for longitudinal broadening that might reveal the presence of viscous effects in these smaller systems. The measured correlators and their evolution from pp and p-Pb to Pb-Pb collisions are additionally compared to predictions from Monte Carlo event generators, and the potential presence of viscous effects is discussed.

Measurement of differential t t ¯ production cross sections using top quarks at large transverse momenta in p p collisions at s = 13 TeV

A measurement is reported of differential top quark pair (${t\bar{t}}$) production cross sections, where top quarks are produced at large transverse momenta. The data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC are from pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$. The measurement uses events where at least one top quark decays as t$ \to $Wb $ \to q\bar{q}'b$ and is reconstructed as a large-radius jet with transverse momentum in excess of 400 GeV. The second top quark is required to decay either in a similar way, or leptonically, as inferred from a reconstructed electron or muon, a bottom quark jet, and a missing transverse momentum due to the undetected neutrino. The cross section is extracted as a function of kinematic variables of individual top quarks or of the ${t\bar{t}}$ system. The results are presented at the particle level, within a region of phase space close to that of the experimental acceptance, and at the parton level, and are compared to various theoretical models. In both decay channels the observed absolute cross sections are significantly lower than the predictions from theory, while the normalized differential measurements are well described.

Transversity GPDs of the proton from lattice QCD

We present the first calculation of the x dependence of the isovector transversity generalized parton distributions (GPDs) for the proton within lattice QCD. We compute the matrix elements with nonlocal operators containing a Wilson line. The calculation implements the Breit symmetric frame. The proton momenta are chosen as 0.83, 1.25, and 1.67 GeV, and the values of the momentum transfer squared are 0.69 and 1.02 GeV 2 . These combinations include cases with zero and nonzero skewness. The calculation is performed using one ensemble of twisted-mass fermions with a clover term: two degenerate-mass light quarks, a strange quark, and a charm quark. The lattice results are renormalized nonperturbatively and finally matched to the light-cone GPDs using one-loop perturbation theory within the framework of large-momentum effective theory. The final GPDs are given in the $\overline{MS}$ scheme at a scale of 2 GeV. In addition to the individual GPDs, we form the combination of the transversity GPDs that is related to the transverse spin structure of the proton. Finally, we extract the lowest two moments of the GPDs and draw a number of important qualitative conclusions.

Perturbative QCD contribution to transverse single spin asymmetries in the Drell-Yan process and SIDIS

In a previous publication [Benić , ], we have computed the perturbative QCD contribution to transverse single spin asymmetries (SSAs) in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) involving the g T ( x ) distribution. In this paper, we first present a more efficient derivation of the asymmetries which is applicable to both transverse and longitudinal SSAs and correct some inconsistencies in our previous calculation. We then adapt the method to compute transverse SSAs in the Drell-Yan process proportional to g T ( x ) and its gluonic counterpart and discuss the crossing symmetry between the results for SIDIS and the Drell-Yan process. Finally, we present numerical results for various asymmetries measurable at the EIC, RHIC, COMPASS, and Fermilab (SpinQuest), including also part of the genuine twist-three corrections to g T ( x ) from a recent global analysis. We find that the asymmetries can reach percent-level magnitude, if the kinematics predominantly probes the large- x (valence) region of the polarized proton, but remain at subpercent levels otherwise. Observation of High-Frequency Transverse Phonons in Metallic Glasses

Here, using inelastic neutron scattering and molecular dynamics simulations on a model Zr-Cu-Al metallic glass, we show that transverse phonons persist well into the high-frequency regime, and can be detected at large momentum transfer. Furthermore, the apparent peak width of the transverse phonons was found to follow the static structure factor. The one-to-one correspondence, which was demonstrated for both Zr-Cu-Al metallic glass and a three-dimensional Lennard-Jones model glass, suggests a universal correlation between the phonon dynamics and the underlying disordered structure. This remarkable correlation, not found for longitudinal phonons, underscores the key role that transverse phonons hold for understanding the structure-dynamics relationship in disordered materials.

Transverse energy–energy correlations of jets in the electron–proton deep inelastic scattering at HERA

We study the event shape variables, transverse energy–energy correlation TEEC (cosφ) and its asymmetry ATEEC (cosφ) in deep inelastic scattering (DIS) at the electron–proton collider HERA, where φ is the angle between two jets defined using a transverse-momentum (k T ) jet algorithm. At HERA, jets are defined in the Breit frame, and the leading nontrivial transverse energy–energy correlations arise from the 3-jet configurations. With the help of the NLOJET++, these functions are calculated in the leading order (LO) and the next-to-leading order (NLO) approximations in QCD at the electron–proton center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 314 GeV. We restrict the angular region to -0.8 ≤ cosφ ≤ 0.8, as the forward- and backward-angular regions require resummed logarithmic corrections, which we have neglected in this work. Following experimental jet-analysis at HERA, we restrict the DIS-variables x, y = Q 2 /(xs), where Q 2 = -q 2 is the negative of the momentum transfer squared q 2 , to 0 ≤ x ≤ 1, 0.2 ≤ y ≤ 0.6, and the pseudo-rapidity variable in the laboratory frame (η lab ) to the range -1 ≤ η lab ≤ 2.5. The TEEC and ATEEC functions are worked out for two ranges in Q 2 , defined by 5.5GeV 2 ≤ Q 2 ≤ 80GeV 2 , called the low-Q 2 -range, and 150GeV 2 ≤ Q 2 ≤ 1000GeV 2 , called the high-Q 2 -range. We show the sensitivity of these functions on the parton distribution functions (PDFs), the factorization (μ F ) and renormalization (μ R ) scales, and on α s (M$^2_Z$). Of these the correlations are stable against varying the scale μ F and the PDFs, but they do depend on μ R . For the choice of the scale μ R =$\sqrt{\langle ET \rangle^2+Q^2}$, advocated in earlier jet analysis at HERA, the shape variables TEEC and ATEEC are found perturbatively robust. These studies are useful in the analysis of the HERA data, including the determination of α s (M$^2_Z$) from the shape variables.

Azimuthal dependence of two-particle transverse momentum current correlations

Two-particle transverse momentum correlation functions are a powerful technique for understanding the dynamics of relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Among these, the transverse momentum correlator G 2 (Δη,Δφ) is of particular interest for its potential sensitivity to the shear viscosity per unit of entropy density η/s of the quark-gluon plasma formed in heavy-ion collisions. We use the UrQMD, AMPT, and EPOS models for Au–Au at √ s NN = 200 GeV and Pb–Pb at √ s NN = 2760 GeV to investigate the long range azimuthal dependence of G 2 (Δη,Δφ), and explore its utility to constrain η/s based on charged particle correlations. We find that the three models yield quantitatively distinct transverse momentum Fourier harmonics coefficients $a$ $^{pT}_{n}$. We also observe these coefficients exhibit a significant dependence on η/s in the context of the AMPT model. These observations suggest that exhaustive measurements of the dependence of G 2 (Δφ) with collision energy, system size, collision centrality, in particular, offer the potential to distinguish between different theoretical models and their underlying assumptions. Exhaustive analyses of G 2 (Δφ) obtained in large and small systems should also be instrumental in establishing new constraints for precise extraction of η/s.

Precise measurements of W - and Z -boson transverse momentum spectra with the ATLAS detector using pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 5.02$ TeV and 13 TeV

This paper describes measurements of the transverse momentum spectra of W and Z bosons produced in proton–proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 TeV and $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. Measurements are performed in the electron and muon channels, W → $\ell$$v$ and Z → $\ell$$\ell$ ($\ell$ = e or μ), and for W events further separated by charge. The data were collected in 2017 and 2018, in dedicated runs with reduced instantaneous luminosity, and correspond to 255 and 338 pb -1 at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 TeV and 13 TeV, respectively. These conditions optimise the reconstruction of the W-boson transverse momentum. The distributions observed in the electron and muon channels are unfolded, combined, and compared to QCD calculations based on parton shower Monte Carlo event generators and analytical resummation. The description of the transverse momentum distributions by Monte Carlo event generators is imperfect and shows significant differences largely common to W - , W + and Z production. The agreement is better at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 TeV, especially for predictions that were tuned to Z production data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV. Higher-order, resummed predictions based on DYTurbo generally match the data best across the spectra. Distribution ratios are also presented and test the understanding of differences between the production processes.

System size and energy dependence of the mean transverse momentum fluctuations at the LHC

Event-by-event fluctuations of the event-wise mean transverse momentum, $\langle$p T $\rangle$, of charged particles produced in proton–proton (pp) collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 TeV, Xe–Xe collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.44 TeV, and Pb–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV are studied using the ALICE detector based on the integral correlator $\langle$$\langle$Δp T Δp T $\rangle$$\rangle$. The correlator strength is found to decrease monotonically with increasing produced charged-particle multiplicity measured at midrapidity in all three systems. In Xe–Xe and Pb–Pb collisions, the multiplicity dependence of the correlator deviates significantly from a simple power-law scaling as well as from the predictions of the HIJING and AMPT models. The observed deviation from power-law scaling is expected from transverse radial flow in semicentral to central Xe–Xe and Pb–Pb collisions. In pp collisions, the correlation strength is also studied by classifying the events based on the transverse spherocity, S 0 , of the particle production at midrapidity, used as a proxy for the presence of a pronounced back-to-back jet topology. Low-spherocity (jetty) events feature a larger correlation strength than those with high spherocity (isotropic). The strength and multiplicity dependence of jetty and isotropic events are well reproduced by calculations with the PYTHIA 8 and EPOS LHC models.

Measurement of Transverse Spin Dependent Azimuthal Correlations of Charged Pion(s) in $p^{\uparrow} p$ Collisions at $\sqrt s = 200$ GeV at STAR

At the leading twist, the transversity distribution function, h^{q}_{1}(x) h 1 q ( x ) , where x x is the longitudinal momentum fraction of the proton carried by quark q q , encodes the transverse spin structure of the nucleon. Extraction of it is difficult because of its chiral-odd nature. In transversely polarized proton-proton collisions ( p^\uparrow p p ↑ p ), h_{1}^{q}(x) h 1 q ( x ) can be coupled with another chiral-odd partner, a spin-dependent fragmentation function (FF). The resulting asymmetries in hadron(s) azimuthal correlations directly probe h_{1}^{q}(x) h 1 q ( x ) . We report the measurement of correlation asymmetries for charged pion(s) in p^\uparrow p p ↑ p , through the Collins and the Interference FF channel.
