Lattice QCD Benchmark of Proton Helicity and Flavor-Dependent Unpolarized Transverse Momentum-Dependent Parton Distribution Functions at Physical Quark Masses

We present the first lattice QCD calculations of the isovector helicity transverse momentum-dependent parton distribution function (TMDPDF) and the flavor-dependent unpolarized TMDPDFs for up and down quarks in the proton. Our computations utilize domain-wall fermion discretization with physical quark masses. Employing Coulomb-gauge-fixed quark correlation functions within the large-momentum effective theory framework, we access nonperturbative transverse quark separations 𝑏 𝑇 up to approximately 1 fm, corresponding to transverse momenta as low as 200 MeV. Based on the quasi-TMD factorization theorem, we construct renormalization-group–invariant ratios that are equal to the corresponding light-cone TMDPDF ratios. At moderate 𝑥, our results reveal that the isovector helicity and unpolarized TMDPDFs exhibit nearly identical transverse structure up to a normalization factor, and the unpolarized distributions display only mild flavor dependence. These findings not only support key trends observed in recent global analyses but also provide robust, nonperturbative constraints that can distinguish between different parameterizations. This Letter establishes a first-principles benchmark for TMDPDFs, offering valuable input for ongoing and future experimental efforts to map the proton’s three-dimensional structure.

Geometric Structure and Transversal Logic of Quantum Reed–Muller Codes

Designing efficient and noise-tolerant quantum computation protocols generally begins with an understanding of quantum error-correcting codes and their native logical operations. The simplest class of native operations are transversal gates, which are naturally fault-tolerant. Here, in this paper, we aim to characterize the transversal gates of quantum Reed–Muller (RM) codes by exploiting the well-studied properties of their classical counterparts. We start our work by establishing a new geometric characterization of quantum RM codes via the Boolean hypercube and its associated subcube complex. More specifically, a set of stabilizer generators for a quantum RM code can be described via transversal X and Z operators acting on subcubes of particular dimensions. This characterization leads us to define subcube operators composed of single-qubit π/2 k Z -rotations that act on subcubes of given dimensions. We first characterize the action of subcube operators on the code space: depending on the dimension of the subcube, these operators either (1) act as a logical identity on the code space, (2) implement non-trivial logic, or (3) rotate a state away from the code space. Second, and more remarkably, we uncover that the logic implemented by these operators corresponds to circuits of multi-controlled-Z gates that have an explicit and simple combinatorial description. Overall, this suite of results yields a comprehensive understanding of a class of natural transversal operators for quantum RM codes.

Elastoplastic transverse properties of a unidirectional fibre reinforced composite

An approximate theoretical study is made to predict the overall transverse elastoplastic properties of a unidirectional fibre reinforced composite. Based on the simplest deformation theory of plasticity, the overall transverse polyaxial elastoplastic constitutive equations for an incompressible composite are obtained. A simple formula is suggested to evaluate the average stress in the fibres. Furthermore, with the prediction of the overall transverse elastic moduli of a compressible composite, the overall transverse uniaxial stress-strain curve for a compressible composite in the entire elastic-plastic range is obtained. A detailed example is given for a Boron-Aluminum composite. Comparison is made with the experimental and theoretical work done by General Dynamics and Adams respectively.

Applications of charge-coupled device transversal filters to communication

The paper discusses the computational power of state-of-the-art charged-coupled device (CCD) transversal filters in communications applications. Some of the performance limitations of CCD transversal filters are discussed, with attention given to time delay and bandwidth, imperfect charge transfer efficiency, weighting coefficient error, noise, and linearity. The application of CCD transversal filters to matched filtering, spectral filtering, and Fourier analysis is examined. Techniques for making programmable transversal filters are briefly outlined.

Transversely accelerated ions - An ionospheric source of hot magnetospheric ions

The paper considers observational data on transversely accelerated ion (TAI) events observed from the Isis 1 and 2 satellites. A source of hot magnetospheric ions was discovered in the auroral topside ionosphere, and a part of the cold ionospheric ion distribution is transversely accelerated within a source region as low as 1000 km. Subsequent to transverse acceleration, the ions are driven upward into the magnetosphere by the gradient B mirror force; they are observed by the soft particle spectrometers on the Isis 1 and 2 satellites, with sharply defined pitch angle distributions centered between 90 and 120 deg, and with energy distributions up to several hundred electron volts. Observations at 1400 km indicate that the transversely accelerated ion (TAI) events are predominantly a winter nightside auroral zone phenomenon, but in the summertime TAI events were observed at altitudes above 2750 km on the day-side within the cleft. Typical intensities exceeding 10 to the 8th power ions/sq cm s sr during TAI events suggest that they may be a significant source of hot ions for the magnetosphere.

Note on the effect of transverse shear deformation in laminated anisotropic plates

The paper describes the development of some computer methods in applied mechanics. It begins with a distribution of primary stresses in laminated plates, followed by a determination of the associated statically consistent transverse shearing stress. The last section deals with the use of an energy principle for the utilization of these expressions for primary and transverse stresses. The purpose of this is to obtain two-dimensional constitutive equations involving transverse shear deformations and transverse shear stress resultants.

A critical analysis of transverse vorticity measurements in a large plane shear layer

An evaluation is made of the roles played in four-wire hot wire probe arrays by the influence of (1) the transverse velocity component on pitch angle measurement; (2) the instantaneous spatial gradient of the pitch angle on transverse vorticity computation; (3) the uncertainties in the magnitude of instantaneous pitch angle spatial gradient in the transverse vorticity computation; and (4) the spatial dimension of the microcirculation domain and the evaluation of transverse vorticity. Attention is given to the probe configuration and its computation algorithm.

Cladding for transverse-pumped solid-state laser

In a transverse pumped, solid state laser, a nonabsorptive cladding surrounds a gain medium. A single tranverse mode, namely the Transverse Electromagnetic (TEM) sub 00 mode, is provided. The TEM sub 00 model has a cross sectional diameter greater than a transverse dimension of the gain medium but less than a transverse dimension of the cladding. The required size of the gain medium is minimized while a threshold for laser output is lowered.

Plasma waves and transversely accelerated ions in the terrestrial ionosphere

Developments in measuring the physical mechanisms responsible for strongly driven transverse ion acceleration in the ionosphere are reviewed. Lower-hybrid waves and ion Bernstein waves can be associated very closely with transversely accelerated ions in the auroral ionosphere. In a recent development, very intense and localized lower-hybrid waves have been observed to produce transversely accelerated ions with characteristic energies of 10 eV. The case for current-driven electrostatic oxygen cyclotron waves producing transversely accelerated ions is less compelling.

Transverse momentum dependent two-pion Bose-Einstein correlations in Au + Au collisions at 11.6 A (center-dot) GeV/c

Bose-Einstein correlations of (pi)(sup +)(pi)(sup +) and (pi)(sup -) (pi)(sup -) pairs collected by the BNL-E866 Forward Spectrometer in 11.6 A(center-dot)GeV/c Au + Au collisions have been measured. The data were analyzed using three-dimensional correlation functions parameterized by the Yano-Koonin-Potgoretskii and Bertsch-Pratt formalism to study transverse momentum dependent source parameters. Rapid decreases of longitudinal source radii and slower decreases in the transverse parameters with increasing transverse momentum were observed, which suggests a strong longitudinal and some transverse expansion. A freeze-out time (tau)(sub 0) was derived as 4.5--5 fm/c, under the assumption of the freeze-out temperature T = 130 MeV, and the duration of emission was found to be (delta)(tau) (approx) 2--4 fm/c.

Transverse Mode Dynamics of VCSELs Undergoing Current Modulation

Transverse mode dynamics of a 20-micron-diameter vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) undergoing gain switching by deep current modulation is studied numerically. The direct current (dc) level is set slightly below threshold and is modulated by a large alternating current (ac). The resulting optical pulse train and transverse-mode patterns are obtained numerically. The ac frequency is varied from 2.5 GHz to 10 GHz, and the ac amplitude is varied from one-half to four times that of the dc level. At high modulation frequencies, a regular pulse train is not generated unless the ac amplitude is large enough. At all modulation frequencies, the transverse spatial profile switches from single-mode to multiple-mode pattern as the ac pumping level is increased. Optical pulse widths vary in the range 5-30 ps. with the pulse width decreasing when either the frequency is increased or the ac amplitude is decreased. The numerical modeling uses an approximation form of the semiconductor Maxwell-Bloch equations. Temporal evolution of the spatial profiles of the laser (and of carrier density) is determined without any assumptions about the type or number of modes. Keywords: VCSELs, current modulation, gain switching, transverse mode dynamics, computational modeling

Evaluation of Transverse Thermal Stresses in Composite Plates Based on First-Order Shear Deformation Theory

A postprocessing procedure is presented for the evaluation of the transverse thermal stresses in laminated plates. The analytical formulation is based on the first-order shear deformation theory and the plate is discretized by using a single-field displacement finite element model. The procedure is based on neglecting the derivatives of the in-plane forces and the twisting moments, as well as the mixed derivatives of the bending moments, with respect to the in-plane coordinates. The calculated transverse shear stiffnesses reflect the actual stacking sequence of the composite plate. The distributions of the transverse stresses through-the-thickness are evaluated by using only the transverse shear forces and the thermal effects resulting from the finite element analysis. The procedure is implemented into a postprocessing routine which can be easily incorporated into existing commercial finite element codes. Numerical results are presented for four- and ten-layer cross-ply laminates subjected to mechanical and thermal loads.

Implementation of Improved Transverse Shear Calculations and Higher Order Laminate Theory Into Strain Rate Dependent Analyses of Polymer Matrix Composites

A numerical procedure has been developed to investigate the nonlinear and strain rate dependent deformation response of polymer matrix composite laminated plates under high strain rate impact loadings. A recently developed strength of materials based micromechanics model, incorporating a set of nonlinear, strain rate dependent constitutive equations for the polymer matrix, is extended to account for the transverse shear effects during impact. Four different assumptions of transverse shear deformation are investigated in order to improve the developed strain rate dependent micromechanics model. The validities of these assumptions are investigated using numerical and theoretical approaches. A method to determine through the thickness strain and transverse Poisson's ratio of the composite is developed. The revised micromechanics model is then implemented into a higher order laminated plate theory which is modified to include the effects of inelastic strains. Parametric studies are conducted to investigate the mechanical response of composite plates under high strain rate loadings. Results show the transverse shear stresses cannot be neglected in the impact problem. A significant level of strain rate dependency and material nonlinearity is found in the deformation response of representative composite specimens.

Transverse strain measurements using fiber optic grating based sensors

A system and method to sense the application of transverse stress to an optical fiber which includes a light source that producing a relatively wide spectrum light beam. The light beam is reflected or transmitted off of an optical grating in the core of an optical fiber that is transversely stressed either directly or by the exposure to pressure when the fiber is bifringent so that the optical fiber responds to the pressure to transversely stress its core. When transversely stressed, the optical grating produces a reflection or transmission from the light beam that has two peaks or minimums in its frequency spectrum whose spacing and/or spread are indicative of the forces applied to the fiber. One or more detectors sense the reflection or transmissions from the optical grating to produce an output representative of the applied force. Multiple optical gratings and detectors may be employed to simultaneously measure temperature or the forces at different locations along the fiber.

A Multi-scale Refined Zigzag Theory for Multilayered Composite and Sandwich Plates with Improved Transverse Shear Stresses

The Refined Zigzag Theory (RZT) enables accurate predictions of the in-plane displacements, strains, and stresses. The transverse shear stresses obtained from constitutive equations are layer-wise constant. Although these transverse shear stresses are generally accurate in the average, layer-wise sense, they are nevertheless discontinuous at layer interfaces, and thus they violate the requisite interlaminar continuity of transverse stresses. Recently, Tessler applied Reissner's mixed variational theorem and RZT kinematic assumptions to derive an accurate and efficient shear-deformation theory for homogeneous, laminated composite, and sandwich beams, called RZT(m), where "m" stands for "mixed". Herein, the RZT(m) for beams is extended to plate analysis, where two alternative assumptions for the transverse shear stresses field are examined: the first follows Tessler's formulation, whereas the second is based on Murakami's polynomial approach. Results for elasto-static simply supported and cantilever plates demonstrate that Tessler's formulation results in a powerful and efficient structural theory that is well-suited for the analysis of multilayered composite and sandwich panels.

Transverse eV Ion Heating by Random Electric Field Fluctuations in the Plasmasphere

Charged particle acceleration in the Earth inner magnetosphere is believed to be mainly due to the local resonant wave-particle interaction or particle transport processes. However, the Van Allen Probes have recently provided interesting evidence of a relatively slow transverse heating of eV ions at distances about 2-3 Earth radii during quiet times. Waves that are able to resonantly interact with such very cold ions are generally rare in this region of space, called the plasmasphere. Thus, non-resonant wave-particle interactions are expected to play an important role in the observed ion heating. We demonstrate that stochastic heating by random transverse electric field fluctuations of whistler (and possibly electromagnetic ion cyclotron) waves could explain this weak and slow transverse heating of H+ and O+ ions in the inner magnetosphere. The essential element of the proposed model of ion heating is the presence of trains of random whistler (hiss) wave packets, with significant amplitude modulations produced by strong wave damping, rapid wave growth, or a superposition of wave packets of different frequencies, phases, and amplitudes. Such characteristics correspond to measured characteristics of hiss waves in this region. Using test particle simulations with typical wave and plasma parameters, we demonstrate that the corresponding stochastic transverse ion heating reaches 0.07-0.2 eV/h for protons and 0.007-0.015 eV/h for O+ ions. This global temperature increase of the Maxwellian ion population from an initial Ti approx. 0.3 eV could potentially explain the observations.

Updated QCD global analysis of single transverse-spin asymmetries: Extracting $\tilde{H}$, and the role of the Soffer bound and lattice QCD

Here, we present an update to the QCD global analysis of single transverse-spin asymmetries presented in [J. Cammarota et al. (Jefferson Lab Angular Momentum Collaboration), Phys. Rev. D 102, 054002 (2020).] (JAM3D-20). JAM3D-20 simultaneously included transverse momentum dependent and collinear twist-3 observables, both of which are sensitive to quark-gluon-quark correlations in hadrons. In this study we extract for the first time the twist-3 chiral odd fragmentation function $\tilde{H}$ by incorporating the sin φ s modulation data from semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering along with its contribution to the single transverse-spin asymmetry in pion production from proton-proton collisions. We also explore the impact of lattice QCD tensor charge calculations and the Soffer bound on our global analysis. We find that both constraints can be accommodated within our results, with $\tilde{H}$ playing a key role in maintaining agreement with the data from proton-proton collisions.

Jet Definition and Transverse-Momentum–Dependent Factorization in Semi-inclusive Deep-Inelastic Scattering

Using the color dipole picture of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) and the color glass condensate effective theory, we study semi-inclusive jet production in DIS at small x in the limit where the photon virtuality Q 2 is much larger than the transverse momentum squared P$^{2}_{⊥}$ of the produced jet. In this limit, the cross section is dominated by aligned jet configurations, that is, quark–antiquark pairs in which one of the fermions—the would-be struck quark in the Breit frame—carries most of the longitudinal momentum of the virtual photon. We show that physically meaningful jet definitions in DIS are such that the effective axis of the jet sourced by the struck quark is controlled by its virtuality rather than by its transverse momentum. For such jet definitions, we show that the next-to-leading order cross section admits factorization in terms of the (sea) quark transverse momentum dependent distribution, which in turn satisfies a universal Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi and Sudakov evolution.
