Three input concepts for flight crew interaction with information presented on a large-screen electronic cockpit display

A piloted simulation study was conducted comparing three different input methods for interfacing to a large-screen, multiwindow, whole-flight-deck display for management of transport aircraft systems. The thumball concept utilized a miniature trackball embedded in a conventional side-arm controller. The touch screen concept provided data entry through a capacitive touch screen. The voice concept utilized a speech recognition system with input through a head-worn microphone. No single input concept emerged as the most desirable method of interacting with the display. Subjective results, however, indicate that the voice concept was the most preferred method of data entry and had the most potential for future applications. The objective results indicate that, overall, the touch screen concept was the most effective input method. There was also significant differences between the time required to perform specific tasks and the input concept employed, with each concept providing better performance relative to a specific task. These results suggest that a system combining all three input concepts might provide the most effective method of interaction.

Arabidopsis thaliana responses to mechanical stimulation do not require ETR1 or EIN2

Plants exposed to repetitive touch or wind are generally shorter and stockier than sheltered plants. These mechanostimulus-induced developmental changes are termed thigmomorphogenesis and may confer resistance to subsequent stresses. An early response of Arabidopsis thaliana to touch or wind is the up-regulation of TCH (touch) gene expression. The signal transduction pathway that leads to mechanostimulus responses is not well defined. A role for ethylene has been proposed based on the observation that mechanostimulation of plants leads to ethylene evolution and exogenous ethylene leads to thigmomorphogenetic-like changes. To determine whether ethylene has a role in plant responses to mechanostimulation, we assessed the ability of two ethylene-insensitive mutants, etr1-3 and ein2-1, to undergo thigmomorphogenesis and TCH gene up-regulation of expression. The ethylene-insensitive mutants responded to wind similarly to the wild type, with a delay in flowering, decrease in inflorescence elongation rate, shorter mature primary inflorescences, more rosette paraclades, and appropriate TCH gene expression changes. Also, wild-type and mutant Arabidopsis responded to vibrational stimulation, with an increase in hypocotyl elongation and up-regulation of TCH gene expression. We conclude that the ETR1 and EIN2 protein functions are not required for the developmental and molecular responses to mechanical stimulation.

Haptic cues for orientation and postural control in sighted and blind individuals

Haptic cues from fingertip contact with a stable surface attenuate body sway in subjects even when the contact forces are too small to provide physical support of the body. We investigated how haptic cues derived from contact of a cane with a stationary surface at low force levels aids postural control in sighted and congenitally blind individuals. Five sighted (eyes closed) and five congenitally blind subjects maintained a tandem Romberg stance in five conditions: (1) no cane; (2,3) touch contact (< 2 N of applied force) while holding the cane in a vertical or slanted orientation; and (4,5) force contact (as much force as desired) in the vertical and slanted orientations. Touch contact of a cane at force levels below those necessary to provide significant physical stabilization was as effective as force contact in reducing postural sway in all subjects, compared to the no-cane condition. A slanted cane was far more effective in reducing postural sway than was a perpendicular cane. Cane use also decreased head displacement of sighted subjects far more than that of blind subjects. These results suggest that head movement control is linked to postural control through gaze stabilization reflexes in sighted subjects; such reflexes are absent in congenitally blind individuals and may account for their higher levels of head displacement.

Possible coexistence of magnetism and paramagnetic singularity in lightly Fe-doped WTe 2

Topological semimetals possess nodal or nodal-line phases where conduction and valence bands touch at points or lines in momentum space, respectively. Such band touching is symmetry protected and gives rise to exotic and interesting electronic properties. Coupling topological order with magnetism provides a platform for exploring time-reversal (TR) symmetry breaking topological physics, such as axion electrodynamics, inverse spin-galvanic effect, and the quantized anomalous Hall effect. The Weyl semimetal (WSM) requires breaking either TR symmetry or lattice inversion symmetry (I). By doping inversion-symmetry-broken WSM with magnetic dopants, one can expect to create a WSM with both symmetries breaking simultaneously. Here, structural, electrical, and magnetic properties of Fe x ⁢W 1–x Te 2 (x = 0 and 0.011) are reported. It is revealed that, with a small Fe doping concentration (x = 0.011), a ferromagnetism is induced at low temperature (<10 K). Scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy measurements in Fe 0.011 ⁢W 0.989 ⁢Te 2 further reveal only substitution and no intercalated dopants being observed. The probabilities of the Fe substitutions at the two nonequivalent W sites are quantified with equal probability. The dl/dV point spectra indicates that the Fe substitution in WTe 2 manifests itself as electron doping regardless of doping sites. The results clearly reveal the possible coexistence of magnetism and Weyl points in the lightly Fe doped WTe2 at low temperature. Furthermore, this provides an ideal system for further study on the interplay between the topological Weyl points and the TR symmetry breaking.

The code consists of several scripts. The image is fetched from a predefined URL, downloaded, and is displayed in the virtual environment at a predefined location. The image is also dynamically scaled to fit in the virtual environment depending on its size. The image is sent to have each pixel's value written to a CSV file. While the CSV is being written, a dictionary is populated with values that map each pixel to a temperature reading. The image's height, width, position and references to its corners are sent to make a button that is the same size as the image and placed right behind the image in the virtual scene. The button defines behavior that should be triggered when the user pushes the image. Unity provides visual cues that alert the user when they are about to touch something in the virtual environment. The code holds references to the cues for the left and right hands. The button queries the cue tracker and receives the position of the active cue in the form of a 3D vector. The 3D vector is compared to the bottom left corner of the image to transform the world space coordinates of the cue to the pixel space of the image. The specific pixel is approximated relative to how far left and up the user touched from the bottom left corner of the image. The approximated pixel value, which is represented as a coordinate in 2D space, is used to retrieve the temperature value associated with the approximated pixel. A window of text is then updated to display the temperature reading.

Code Coverage Status of the ARC Code DIF3D

The Argonne Reactor Code (ARC) software system supports users in their fast reactor design goals by providing neutronic, thermal-hydraulic, and structural analysis capabilities. DIF3D plays a pivotal role in the ARC system as the primary homogenized assembly neutronic calculation methodology for fast reactor problems. Over its 40 years history, ARC software usage with DIF3D has been applied to numerous fast and thermal spectrum reactor analysis projects with good to excellent comparison against experiments. With continued improvement of computation resources, many of the geometry modeling capabilities in DIF3D that were primarily used in low order schemes are not really needed anymore. Today, the diffusion and transport capabilities of DIF3D-VARIANT are primarily used in the reactor design process with some scattered usage of DIF3D-FD and DIF3D-Nodal. In recent work, the DIF3D software verification was completed for DIF3D-FD and DIF3D-VARIANT on the geometry options used in the Versatile Test Reactor project. While we can be confident that these capabilities of DIF3D are well used and thus trusted, it does not demonstrate that all possible input options of DIF3D are actually working, but just those that were tested as part of VTR are and that they are correct. Thus, the purpose of the present work is to identify a set of test problems for DIF3D and assess the code coverage of DIF3D for those test problems. The goal is to document what parts of the existing DIF3D code are touched by the set of test problems and which are not. Because the verification work done on DIF3D-VARIANT and DIF3D-FD was focused on the most common uses of DIF3D for fast reactor analysis, the code coverage assessment of those capabilities is the highest priority. This will ensure that nothing is being missed by the existing verification test problems that DIF3D relies upon. The DIF3D-Nodal capability will also be inspected for code coverage as part of this work to further ensure that regular regression testing of DIF3D will trap any likely errors the end user might experience with the DIF3D software. The code coverage analysis of DIF3D was performed with the Code Coverage Tool of the Intel Fortran compiler which requires modifications to the compilation of DIF3D. The detailed coverage tables are given for each submodule of DIF3D separately, and for the submodules which are primarily developed for DIF3D, most of the source files could be at least partially touched. Most of the uncovered parts/files could be easily ignored, because they are either for error message and debugging output or obviously not needed by DIF3D. Out of the entire source codes of DIF3D, only a few uncovered modules deserve further investigation.

Parabolic flight - Loss of sense of orientation

On the earth, or in level flight, a blindfolded subject being rotated at constant velocity about his recumbent long body axis experiences illusory orbital motion of his body in the opposite direction. By contrast, during comparable rotation in the free-fall phase of parabolic flight, no body motion is perceived and all sense of external orientation may be lost; when touch and pressure stimulation is applied to the body surface, a sense of orientation is reestablished immediately. The increased gravitoinertial force period of a parabola produces an exaggeration of the orbital motion experienced in level flight. These observations reveal an important influence of touch, pressure, and kinesthetic information on spatial orientation and provide a basis for understanding many of the postural illusions reported by astronauts in space flight.

Bubble in a corner flow

The distortion of a two-dimensional bubble (or drop) in a corner of angle delta, due to the flow of an inviscid incompressible fluid around it, is examined theoretically. The flow and the bubble shape are determined as functions of the angle delta, the contact angle beta and the cavitation number gamma. The problem is formulated as an integrodifferential equation for the bubble surface. This equation generalized the integrodifferential equations derived by Vanden-Broeck and Keller. The shape of the bubble is found approximately by using the slender body theory for bubbles. When gamma reaches a critical value gamma sub 0 (beta, delta), opposite sides of the bubble touch each other. Two different families of solution for gamma gamma sub 0 are obtained. In the first family opposite sides touch at one point. In the second family contact is allowed along a segment.

Detection of rotating thunderstorms using satellite imagery

In the case of the Carolina tornadoes, researchers prepared visible and IR GOES imagery covering the period 2000 Z when the storm entered South Carolina from Georgia until it exited North Carolina at 0200 Z into Virginia. The GOES IR imagery clearly demonstrated that this storm was imbedded in a continuously propagating mesolow with a well defined cold dome. The ground damage track paralleled exactly with the cold dome throughout the storm's life across the Carolinas. There were no advanced very high resolution radiometer (AVHRR) data during the period to allow researchers to inspect the cloud top for warm temperature anomalies. The Carolina storm did exhibit rightward deviating outflow which was oriented about 60 degrees to the 300 mb streamlines. The tornadoes of April 27, 1984 were part of a tornado producing cold front which stretched from Oklahoma to Minnesota. As the front moved eastward it touched off numerous tornadoes in eastern Wisconsin. GOES imagery for this data was prepared and it was strikingly clear that all along the North-South oriented squall line, the individual tunderstorms had cirrus plumes which had remarkable right deviation to the upper air flow. Unlike the Carolina long track supercell cell-mesolow system, these storms were isolated individual thunderstorms which touched off at least 16 tornadoes in eastern Wisconsin stretching from the Milwaukee area on the south to Vilas County in the north. The monster tornado of June 8, 1984 which leveled 90 percent of the village of Barneveld, Wisconsin and killed 9 persons is also discussed.

The Martian surface as imaged, sampled, and analyzed by the Viking landers

Data collected by two Viking landers are analyzed. Attention is given to the characteristics of the surface inferred from Lander imaging and meteorology data, physical and magnetic properties experiments, and both inorganic and organic analyses of Martian samples. Viking Lander 1 touched down on Chryse Planitia on July 20, 1976 and continued to operate for 2252 sols, until November 20, 1982. Lander 2 touched down about 6500 km away from Lander 1, on Utopia Planitia on September 3, 1976. The chemical compositions of sediments at the two landing sites are similar, suggesting an aeolian origin. The compositions suggest an iron-rich rock an are matched by various clays and salts.

Effects of tacky mat contamination on bond degradation for Chemlok/liner and NBR/liner bonds

Tacky mats are placed by the rubber lay-up areas for the solid rocket motor segments. These mats dust off the shoes prior to entering the platform where the lay-up work is performed. The possibility exists that a tacky mat could be touched with gloved hands prior to handling the uncured nitride butadiene rubber (NBR). Tests were run to determine if NBR were accidentally touched would there be any degradation of the liner/NBR bond. The tacky mats were judged solely on the basis of bond degradation caused by either direct or indirect contamination. Test results all indicate that there was no notable NBR/Chemlok or liner/NBR bond degradation on samples that came into contact with the tacky mat material. Testing procedures are described. The tacky mat adhesive composition does not contain fluorocarbons or release agents that would affect bonding.
