Maintaining technical excellence requires a national plan

To meet the challenge of technical excellence, AIA established a rocket propulsion committee to develop the National Rocket Propulsion Strategic Plan. Developing such a plan required a broad spectrum of experience and disciplines. The Strategic Plan team needed the participation of industry, government, and academia. The plan provides, if followed, a means for the U.S. to maintain technical excellence and world leadership in rocket propulsion. To implement the National Rocket Propulsion Strategic Plan is to invest in the social, economic, and technological futures of America. The plan lays the basis for upgrading existing propulsion systems and a firm base for future full scale development, production, and operation of rocket propulsion systems for space, defense, and commercial applications.

Remaining Technical Challenges and Future Plans for Oil-Free Turbomachinery

The application of Oil-Free technologies (foil gas bearings, solid lubricants and advanced analysis and predictive modeling tools) to advanced turbomachinery has been underway for several decades. During that time, full commercialization has occurred in aircraft air cycle machines, turbocompressors and cryocoolers and ever-larger microturbines. Emerging products in the automotive sector (turbochargers and superchargers) indicate that high volume serial production of foil bearings is imminent. Demonstration of foil bearings in APU s and select locations in propulsion gas turbines illustrates that such technology also has a place in these future systems. Foil bearing designs, predictive tools and advanced solid lubricants have been reported that can satisfy anticipated requirements but a major question remains regarding the scalability of foil bearings to ever larger sizes to support heavier rotors. In this paper, the technological history, primary physics, engineering practicalities and existing experimental and experiential database for scaling foil bearings are reviewed and the major remaining technical challenges are identified.

Tunable Electrochemical Pathway for High-Purity REMs and CMs

This report details a comprehensive research initiative focused on developing a technical research plan for the efficient and sustainable production of rare earth elements (REEs) and critical materials (CMs) from coal-based resources, specifically lignite coal from the Williston Basin in North Dakota. The project’s methodology centers on the design and evaluation of a tunable electrochemical pathway (TEP), an innovative approach aimed at achieving high-purity rare earth oxides (REOs), rare earth salts (RES), and CMs. This research is crucial for addressing the growing demand for these materials in clean energy technologies, electric vehicles, and high-tech applications, while reducing the United States’ reliance on foreign supply chains. The project was structured into four key tasks, each designed to build upon the previous one and contribute to the overarching goal of developing a viable technical research plan.

Update on SLD Engineering Tools Development

The airworthiness authorities (FAA, JAA, Transport Canada) will be releasing a draft rule in the 2006 timeframe concerning the operation of aircraft in a Supercooled Large Droplet (SLD) environment aloft. The draft rule will require aircraft manufacturers to demonstrate that their aircraft can operate safely in an SLD environment for a period of time to facilitate a safe exit from the condition. It is anticipated that aircraft manufacturers will require a capability to demonstrate compliance with this rule via experimental means (icing tunnels or tankers) and by analytical means (ice prediction codes). Since existing icing research facilities and analytical codes were not developed to account for SLD conditions, current engineering tools are not adequate to support compliance activities in SLD conditions. Therefore, existing capabilities need to be augmented to include SLD conditions. In response to this need, NASA and its partners conceived a strategy or Roadmap for developing experimental and analytical SLD simulation tools. Following review and refinement by the airworthiness authorities and other international research partners, this technical strategy has been crystallized into a project plan to guide the SLD Engineering Tool Development effort. This paper will provide a brief overview of the latest version of the project plan and technical rationale, and provide a status of selected SLD Engineering Tool Development research tasks which are currently underway.

Performance Evaluation of District Energy Microgrids Planning Tool for Non-Technical Users

Community Microgrids are increasingly gaining popularity worldwide for their efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and local resilience improvement. Microgrid planning tools play a crucial role in their deployment. In the process, tentative designs of the microgrid are simulated, analyzed, and optimized. Due to the complexity of the problem, planning tools must carefully balance computational efficiency while seeking the most optimal solutions. This paper investigates the impact of algorithm selection on CPU and memory utilization of a Community Microgrid planning tool that is specifically designed for non-technical users. We compare two version of the code with two alternatives for Community Microgrid planning tools: a Greedy Algorithm, and a Linear Programming Approach. This comparison examines scenarios spanning from 2 to 50 buildings. Our findings revealed a significant difference in performance between the two algorithms, underscoring the critical role of algorithm selection in optimizing the efficiency of Community Microgrid Planning Tools.
