TRACER-Tethersonde VOC data

One objective of TRACER-Tethersonde campaign was to deploy a volatile organic compound (VOC) sampler on the Tethered Balloon System (TBS) to create vertical profiles and characterize VOC composition. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are highly reactive precursor species that undergo atmospheric processing to form secondary products, including aerosol. VOC emissions are influenced by many factors that include but are not limited to temperature, time of day, local anthropogenic activities, and local vegetation, which result in large spatiotemporal variability. The vertical distribution of volatile species is crucial for understanding gas-phase processing for particle production but challenging to accomplish using currently available sampling devices. The standalone sampler built during the campaign enabled the execution of robust experimental designs, including sample collection using resin tubes at multiple altitudes on subsequent flights. Following field sampling, resin tubes were transported back to Baylor University for chemical analysis using a Markes International thermal desorption unit coupled with a gas chromatograph-tandem mass spectrometer (Thermo Scientific). The target analyte list includes biogenic and anthropogenic VOCs.

Fluorescent Particle Vertical Profiles (Counts and Fractions) at SAIL

This dataset contains vertically resolved fluorescent aerosol number concentrations and fluorescent fractions of total aerosol number concentrations measured with the ARM Tethered Balloon System during the Surface Atmosphere Integrated Field Laboratory campaign near Gothic, Colorado. Measurements were collected during April and June 2023 as part of the ARM–EMSL FICUS project “Characterization of the Aerobiome during the ARM Surface-Atmosphere Integrated Laboratory Campaign,” which was designed to characterize the vertical distribution of bioaerosol-relevant particles in the Colorado River Basin. The dataset includes profiles of fluorescent particle concentrations measured with a Fluorescent Portable Optical Particle Sizer (FPOPS) in the approximately 0.5–3 µm diameter range. For fluorescent fractions of total aerosol number concentrations, we compare FPOPS measurements to POPS on the same TBS flight.

DUNE Software and Computing Challenges

The DUNE experiment will begin running in the late 2020's. The goals of the experiment include 1) studying neutrino oscillations using a beam of neutrinos from Fermilab in Illinois to the Sanford Underground Research Facility, 2) studying astrophysical neutrino sources and rare processes and 3) understanding the physics of neutrino interactions in matter. The DUNE Far Detector, consisting of four 17 kt LArTPC modules, will produce "events" rang-ing in size from 6 GBs to more than 100 TBs, posing unique challenges for DUNE software and computing. The data processing algorithms, particularly for raw data, drive the requirements for the future DUNE software framework documented here.

DenKv: Addressing Design Trade-offs of Key-value Stores for Scientific Applications

High-performance computing (HPC) facilities have employed flash-based storage tier near to compute nodes to absorb high I/O demand by HPC applications during periodic system-level checkpoints. To accelerate these checkpoints, proxy-based distributed key-value stores (PD-KVS) gained particular attention for their flexibility to support multiple backends and different network configurations. PD-KVS rely internally on monolithic KVS, such as LevelDB or RocksDB, to exploit the KV interface and query support. However, PD-KVS are unaware of the high redundancy factor in checkpoint data, which can be up to GBs to TBs, and therefore, tend to generate high write and space amplification on these storage layers. In this paper, we propose DenKv which is deduplication-extended node-local LSM-tree-based KVS. DenKv employs asynchronous partially inline dedup (APID) and aims to maintain the performance characteristics of LSM-tree-based KVS while reducing the write and space amplification problems. We implemented DenKv atop BlobDB and showed that our proposed solution maintains performance while reducing write amplification up to 2× and space amplification by 4× on average.
