Solution‐Phase Metathesis of Li 3 N and FeCl 3 to Synthesize Fe 2 N/Fe 3 N Nanoparticles

Soft magnetic materials play key roles in the flow of energy in electrically driven machines and power conversion electronics, and there is a great need for improvements in their magnetic properties to provide the right combination of high saturation magnetization, low coercivity, and high permeability. Most phases of iron nitride (Fe x N) are soft magnetic materials with these characteristics, but they exist as numerous phases which are not all stoichiometric compounds. While the production and magnetic properties of the different phases of bulk iron nitride are well known, accessing phase‐pure nanoscale iron nitride consistently remains a challenge. Most methods for the synthesis of iron nitride nanoparticles require complicated apparatus to achieve high‐temperature nitriding of nanoparticle precursors with gaseous nitrogen sources such as ammonia. The first solution‐phase metathesis reaction between FeCl 3 and Li 3 N in oleylamine is developed to directly synthesize Fe 2 N/Fe 3 N nanoparticles, requiring only a fume hood, glove box, standard chemistry laboratory glassware, and equipment. Finally, the ≈10–15 nm spheres display nearly soft magnetic behavior with a saturation magnetization ≈50–60 A m 2 kg −1 , coercivities between 40–50 kA m −1 , and susceptibility values from 0.0001–0.0006 m 3 kg −1 , well within the ranges reported with other published Fe x N nanoparticle synthesis methods.

(NH 3 (CH 2 ) 7 NH 3 ) 2 Sn 3 I 10 , a Vacancy-Ordered Three-Dimensional Tin(II) Perovskite-Derived Semiconductor

Ordering vacancies in hybrid Sn(II) halide semiconductors provides a strategy for preventing uncontrolled oxidation and formation of mobile holes. In this study, we report the structure and optical and electronic properties of (NH 3 (CH 2 ) 7 NH 3 ) 2 Sn 3 I 10 , a vacancy-ordered perovskite derivative with three-dimensional inorganic connectivity. The crystal structure resembles that of a Dion–Jacobson layered perovskite derivative, but with [SnI 5 ] square pyramids bridging the layers. UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy reveals a sharp onset of light absorption at 1.86(1) eV with the photoluminescence emission maximum at 1.90(1) eV. However, the maximum excitation occurs from 3.42 to 3.81 eV (325 to 370 nm), revealing a significant Stokes shift of 1.3 eV. The electronic properties determined from dark and time-resolved microwave conductivity measurements reveal a minimum carrier mobility of 4.3 × 10 –2 cm 2 V –1 s –1 and a maximum carrier density of 5.96 × 10 16 cm –3 , a uniquely low value for a hybrid Sn(II) halide semiconductor. The transport behavior in combination with first-principles calculations of the electronic band structure and dielectric permittivity suggest polaron-mediated electronic transport, yet the photogenerated carriers have a fast and fluence-dependent nonradiative recombination rate, suggestive of localized “defect-like” states at the band edge. The observed photoluminescence is most consistent with single-ion-like behavior of an asymmetric Sn(II) environment. Together, these results suggest that defect ordering presents a strategy for the reduction of mobile charge carriers at equilibrium.

Origins of the Pressure-Induced Phase Transition and Metallization in the Halide Perovskite (CH 3 NH 3 )PbI 3

Hybrid halide perovskites are promising for applications because of their favorable optoelectronic properties and low cost. Here we investigate the effects of hydrostatic pressure on the structural and electronic properties of (MA)PbI 3 (MA = CH 3 NH 3 + ) using first-principles density functional theory calculations. Our calculations predict that at a pressure of 0.23 GPa, the orthorhombic Fmmm phase becomes unstable with respect to a cubic Im$\bar{3}$ phase, in good agreement with room-temperature experiments (~0.3 GPa). At higher pressures, about 6 GPa, we predict the onset of pronounced intra- and interoctahedral distortions. This symmetry lowering leads to the introduction of I 5p–I 5p* antibonding and Pb 6p–Pb 6p bonding character into the valence band maximum (VBM) and the conduction band minimum (CBM) states, respectively. We find this change in bond character explains the evolution of the VBM and CBM states under compression, trends that ultimately lead to metallization at significantly higher pressures.

Identification of the U(v) complex (C 5 Me 5 ) 2 U V I(=NSiMe 3 ) in the reaction of (C 5 Me 5 ) 2 U III I(THF) with N 3 SiMe 3

The U(V) imido complex (C 5 Me 5 ) 2 U V I(=NSiMe 3 ), 1, was crystallographically characterized from the reaction of (C 5 Me 5 ) 2 U III I(THF) with N 3 SiMe 3 which demonstrates that it can be an intermediate in the reaction which ultimately forms (C 5 Me 5 ) 2 U VI (=NSiMe 3 ) 2 and (C 5 Me 5 ) 2 U IV I 2 . U(V) intermediates have been proposed in such reactions, but have not been previously observed. The direct observation of 1 provides insight into the reaction mechanisms of U(III) compounds with azide reagents.

Rashba effects in lead-free ferroelectric semiconductor [CH 3 PH 3 ]SnBr 3

Here, first-principles density functional theory computations are used to predict Rashba effects cofunctional with ferroelectricity in a recently synthesized lead-free hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite MPSnBr 3 (MP=methylphosphonium, [CH 3 PH 3 ] + ). The ground state of the material is polar monoclinic with calculated spontaneous polarization of 3.01 µC/cm 2 . It exhibits near band edges spin-splitting of up to 3.3 meV and Rashba coefficient up to 0.62 eV Å. The spin textures have different topology in the conduction and valence band, which originates from the difference in the spin-momentum coupling strengths. They occur in two orthogonal planes of the Brillouin zone and are coupled to the direction of spontaneous polarization. These features persist at a finite temperature of 293 K. At 333 K, that is above monoclinic to orthorhombic phase transition, spontaneous polarization is reduced to 0.15 µC/cm 2 , while the maximum spin splitting and Rashba coefficient reduce slightly to the value of 2.9 meV and 0.41 eV Å, respectively. The spin textures remain coupled with the polarization direction. We investigate the dependence of the aforementioned properties on the choice of computational methodology to extend the first-principles predictions to include finite temperature effects. We find that the predictions are sensitive to the methodology. Our study reveals the potential of MPSnBr 3 for low-temperature applications in spintronics and quantum computing.

The impact of 2 H 9/2 → 4 I 13/2 emission from Er 3+ ions on ratiometric optical temperature sensing with Yb 3+ /Er 3+ co-doped upconversion materials

Yb 3+ /Er 3+ co-doped upconversion materials are widely used for luminescence intensity ratio (LIR) thermometry, where the relative intensity ratio of the green luminescence transitions ( 2 H 11/2 4 I 15/2 and 4 S 3/2 4 I 15/2 ) of Er 3+ dopant ions changes with temperature. In this work we report on the impact of an additional transition from the 2 H 9/2 level to the intermediate 4 I 13/2 level, which overlaps with the green luminescence normally used for LIR thermometry. The 2 H 9/2 4 I 13/2 emission overlaps extensively with the 4 S 3/2 4 I 15/2 emission and is more sensitive to pump power. The wavelength intervals used to integrate both 2 H 11/2 4 I 15/2 and 4 S 3/2 4 I 15/2 luminescence need be selected carefully in order to achieve accurate temperature readouts.

Nucleation and growth of PbSeO 3 , Pb 3 (CO 3 ) 2 (OH) 2 , and Se on the PbSe surfaces by decomposing PbSe in water

PbSe materials are widely researched and utilized in visible-infrared photodetectors, displays, transistors, thermoelectric devices, and photovoltaics. However, the instability of PbSe limits practical utilization. The decomposition mechanisms of PbSe needs to be clarified for guiding targeted design to improve its stability. Here, we studied the decomposition process of PbSe in water, which is exposed to air, by using ex-situ and semi in situ transmission electron microscope (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and electron tomography reconstruction (ETR). We found that, besides water molecules, PbSe particles also react with O 2 and CO 2 that are adsorbed in water from air. Pd 3 (CO 3 ) 2 (OH) 2 , PbSeO 3 , and Se nucleate and grow on the surface of PbSe powders. This work provides understanding of the mechanism of materials nucleation, growth, and decomposition. Furthermore, the findings can be used as a reference to improve the stability and lifetime of PbSe devices.

Electrochemical measurement and analysis of YCl 3 , ScCl 3 , GdCl 3 and MgCl 2 in molten eutectic LiCl-KCl

For this work, electrochemical measurements of YCl 3 , ScCl 3 , GdCl 3 and MgCl 2 were obtained in molten LiCl-KCl eutectic at 773 K using a three-electrode configuration. Tungsten rods were used as the working and counter electrodes. Two quasi- and one reference electrode(s) (glassy carbon, nickel wire, and Ni/NiO) were used to collect electrochemical measurements of the analyte salts. Cyclic voltammetry data were analyzed to calculate values of diffusion coefficient, exchange current density, and charge transfer resistance and were determined to be on the order of 10 –5 cm 2 s –1 , 10 –2 A cm –2 , and 10 0 Ω; respectively. In general, the values of diffusion coefficients were found to be consistent with those reported of high-temperature molten salts. Relatively large values of exchange current density corresponded with smaller values of charge transfer resistance. These values were found to be reasonable in comparison to results available in the literature. The measured cyclic voltammograms were normalized with respect to both lithium reduction and chloride ion oxidation potentials. Such a normalization technique is effective for comparing experimentally obtained cyclic voltammetry data to those that have been published. An analysis of experimentally obtained results indicates the relation of electrode reactions (e.g., differences of reduction potentials) are independent of the choice of reference electrode. Additionally, the choice of reference electrode did not affect the electrochemical window, exchange current density, or diffusion coefficient values.

As a visible-light response photocatalyst, BiVO 4 is widely used in photocatalytic oxygen evolution. In this study, a novel BiVO 4 –Bi 6 O 6 (OH) 3 (NO 3 ) 3 (BBN) heterostructure fabricates via a simple one-pot hydrothermal approach is certified to effectively restrain the recombination of carriers by efficient spatial charge separation. By employing BBN as a reductive-function photocatalyst, a solid-state Z-scheme is constructed to improve the photo-redox capacity of BiVO 4 and hydrogen production is realized in the BiVO 4 –BBN heterostructure for the first time. Furthermore, the solid-state Z-scheme introduced in the BiVO 4 –BBN ensures the photoexcited carriers with the powerful redox capacity to participate in the photocatalytic reaction.

In this paper we report on the crystal growth, density functional theory (DFT) calculations and scintillation properties of Tl 3 LnCl 6 :Ce and TlLn 2 Cl 7 :Ce(Ln = Y, Gd). Crystals were grown by the Vertical Bridgman technique up to 16 mm in diameter and 25 mm long. Crystals of Tl 3 YCl 6 :Ce and Tl 3 GdCl 6 :Ce belong to the family of the Nesohalides which have the monoclinic crystal structure. Crystals of TlY 2 Cl 7 :Ce and TlGd 2 Cl 7 :Ce belong to the family of the Phyllohalides which have either the monoclinic or the orthorhombic crystal structure. We report the light yields of these Nesohalides and Phyllohalides are typically on the order of 35,000–40,000 ph/MeV.

Speed of Sound Measurements of Binary Mixtures of trans -1,2-Difluoroethylene (R-1132(E)) with Difluoromethane (R-32) or 2,3,3,3-Tetrafluoropropene (R-1234yf)

The speed of sound of two binary mixtures containing 0.336 mole fraction trans-1,2- difluoroethylene (R-1132(E)) with difluoromethane (R-32) and 0.435 mole fraction R-1132(E) with 2,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene (R-1234yf) were measured with a dual-path pulse-echo instrument. The speed of sound was measured along several pseudo-isochores for each blend at temperatures ranging from 230 K to 325 K for blends with R-32 and to 342 K for blends with R- 1234yf. Measurements started at pressures just above each mixtures bubble point pressure and were limited to 8 MPa to avoid potential disproportionation reactions of the R-1132(E). The data were compared to multi-fluid models incorporating Helmholtz-energy-explicit equations of state (EOS) for each pure fluid.

Improved Accuracy in Semi-Experimental Structure Determination by Resolving Problems Associated with Rotation of Principal Inertial Axes of Isotopologues: Structures of 1,3-Oxazole ( c -C 3 H 3 NO)

The rotational spectrum of the normal isotopologue of 1,3-oxazole (c-C 3 H 3 NO) was observed from 43 to 750 GHz. Over 3900 transitions for the ground vibrational state are measured, assigned, and least-squares fit to sextic centrifugally distorted-rotor Hamiltonians. The measured frequencies and resulting spectroscopic constants from this extended spectral range, combined with previous measurements of the nuclear quadrupole coupling constants, will facilitate astronomical searches for oxazole across the majority of the range of modern radiotelescopes. Spectra for a set of 30 oxazole isotopologues, which include multiple isotopic substitutions of each atom, are used to determine the first semi-experimental equilibrium ($r$$^{SE}_{e}$) structure and semi-experimental substitution structure ($r$$^{SE}_{e}$), each using CCSD(T) computed values for the vibration–rotation interaction and electron-mass corrections. The large number of isotopologues, including 21 isotopologues observed for the first time, and the redundant substitutions of each atom provide sufficient spectroscopic information to determine the $r$$^{SE}_{e}$ structure with the expected high level of accuracy and precision (0.0001 or 0.0002 Å in bond distances and 0.013 to 0.025° in bond angles). In the course of this study, we analyzed a known issue for some $r$$^{SE}_{e}$ structure determinations of near-oblate asymmetric tops in which inclusion of individual isotopologues degrades the structure determination. We demonstrate that this problem primarily arises from the difference in the values of the computed vibration–rotation interaction corrections as evaluated at the computed re geometry vs the $r$$^{SE}_{e}$ geometry of the “real” molecule. Our solution to this problem substantially improves the $r$$^{SE}_{e}$ structure of oxazole and likely can be generalized to many other molecules.

Transient X-ray Diffraction Reveals Nonequilibrium Phase Transition in Thin Films of CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 Perovskite

Advantageous optoelectronic properties of methylammonium lead triiodide likely arise from coupling between photogenerated charge-carriers and the soft, deformable lattice. We investigate structural dynamics of MAPbI 3 films using time-resolved X-ray diffraction versus pump-probe time delay and pump intensity. During the first nanosecond, the lattice anisotropically distorts from tetragonal to cubic at excitation intensities that are insufficient to thermally induce the first-order thermodynamic phase transition at 330K. Further, the high-symmetry structure then relaxes back to the starting phase with 11 and 236-ns time constants via a different transition pathway than observed either in the first nanosecond or in previous reports for MAPbI 3 . Early-time dynamics are consistent with polaron formation and lattice strain stabilization while the slower recovery dynamics outlive radiative recombination and relates metastability. Fluence-independence of these lattice deformations in the low-power regime conveys relevance to optoelectronics including photovoltaics and highlights sustained involvement of non-equilibrium, photoinduced lattice reorganization in MAPbI 3 under functional conditions.

Light-Induced Transient Lattice Dynamics and Metastable Phase Transition in CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 Nanocrystals

In this study, methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI 3 ) perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) offer desirable optoelectronic properties with prospective utility in photovoltaics, lasers, and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Structural rearrange-ments of MAPbI 3 in response to photoexcitation, such as lattice distortions and phase transitions, are of particular interest, as these engender long carrier lifetime and bolster carrier diffusion. Here, we use variable temperature X-ray diffraction (XRD) and synchrotron-based transient X-ray diffraction (TRXRD) to investigate lattice response following ultrafast optical excitation. MAPbI 3 NCs are found to slowly undergo a phase transition from the tetragonal to a pseudocubic phase over the course of 1 ns under 0.02-4.18 mJ/cm 2 fluence photoexcitation, with apparent nonthermal lattice distortions attributed to polaron formation. Lattice recovery exceeds time scales expected for both carrier recombination and thermal dissipation, indicating meta-stability likely due to the proximal phase transition, with symmetry-breaking along equatorial and axial directions. These findings are relevant for fundamental understanding and applications of structure-function properties.

Structure and good piezoelectric performance in the complex system of Pb[(Zn,Ni)Nb]O 3 –Pb[(In,Yb)Nb]O 3 –Pb(Zr,Hf,Ti)O 3

High-performance piezoelectrics are always demanded for the high-end application. In this study, a complex piezoelectric system of 0.49Pb(Zn 1/2 Ni 1/2 ) 1/3 Nb 2/3 O 3 – x Pb(In 1/2 Yb 1/2 ) 1/2 Nb 1/2 O 3 –(0.51 – x )Pb(Zr 1/2 Hf 1/2 ) 0.1 Ti 0.9 O 3 (0.16 ≤ x ≤ 0.23) was fabricated through the solid-state method. The structure, ferroelectric, piezoelectric, and dielectric properties were investigated. The optimum piezoelectric coefficient d 33 of 761 pC/N, high Curie temperature of 169 °C, dielectric permittivity ( ε r ) of 4557, and electromechanical coupling coefficient ( k p ) of 63% were found at the morphotropic phase boundary composition of x = 0.19, which are superior to other complex piezoelectric materials. In particular, a significant large-signal d 33 * of 913 pm/V and low strain hysteresis (6%) was obtained in the temperature range of 20–170 °C. Temperature-dependent x-ray diffraction (XRD) has demonstrated that good temperature stability is put down to the structure stability. The agreement between the calculated lattice strain from in situ high-energy synchrotron XRD data and the macroscopic measurements suggests that the large lattice strain has a dominant contribution to the high piezoelectric response. The high piezoelectric performance and good temperature stability makes it potential for application.

Precise equilibrium structures of 1 H - and 2 H -1,2,3-triazoles (C 2 H 3 N 3 ) by millimeter-wave spectroscopy

The 1H- and 2H-1,2,3-triazoles are isomeric five-membered ring, aromatic heterocycles that may undergo chemical equilibration by virtue of intramolecular hydrogen migration (tautomerization). Using millimeter-wave spectroscopy in the 130–375 GHz frequency range, we measured the spectroscopic constants for thirteen 1H-1,2,3-triazole and sixteen 2H-1,2,3-triazole isotopologues. Herein, we provide highly accurate and highly precise semi-experimental equilibrium (r e SE ) structures for the two tautomers based on the spectroscopic constants of each set of isotopologues, together with vibration–rotation interaction and electron-mass distribution corrections calculated using coupled-cluster singles, doubles, and perturbative triples calculations [CCSD(T)/cc-pCVTZ]. The resultant structures are compared with a “best theoretical estimate” (BTE), which has recently been shown to be in exceptional agreement with the semi-experimental equilibrium structures of other aromatic molecules. Bond distances of the 1H tautomer are determined to <0.0008 Å and bond angles to <0.2°. For the 2H tautomer, bond angles are also determined to <0.2°, but bond distances are less precise (2σ ≤ 0.0015). Finally, agreement between BTE and r e SE values is discussed.
