Decentralized Filtering Adaptive Neural Network Control for Uncertain Switched Interconnected Nonlinear Systems

This article presents a novel decentralized filtering adaptive neural network control framework for uncertain switched interconnected nonlinear systems. Each subsystem has its own decentralized controller based on the established decentralized state predictor. For each subsystem, the nonlinear uncertainties are approximated by a Gaussian radial basis function (GRBF) neural network incorporated with a piecewise constant adaptive law, where the adaptive law will update adaptive parameters from the error dynamics between the host system and the decentralized state predictor by discarding the unknowns, whereas a decentralized filtering control law is derived to cancel both local and mismatched uncertainties from other subsystems, as well as achieve the local objective tracking of the host system. The achievement of global objective depends on the achievement of local objective for each subsystem. The matched uncertainties are canceled directly by adopting their opposite in the control signal, whereas a dynamic inversion of the system is required to eliminate the effect of the mismatched uncertainties on the output. By exploiting the average dwell time principle, the error bounds between the real system and the virtual reference system, which defines the best performance that can be achieved by the closed-loop system, are derived. A numerical example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the decentralized filtering adaptive neural network control architecture by comparing against the model reference adaptive control (MRAC).

High-Fidelity Models and Fast EMT Simulation Algorithms for Isolated Multi-port Autonomous Reconfigurable Solar power plant (MARS)

The integration of hybrid photovoltaic (PV) and energy storage system (ESS) based plants has become a promising way of solving the intermittency of PV plants and providing frequency support to the power grid. The multi-port autonomous reconfigurable solar power plant (MARS) can integrate the PV systems and ESSs to an ac grid and dc lines. The proposed isolated MARS incorporates an isolated converter that connects to the PV arrays and is based on the dual active bridge (DAB) converter. The high frequency switching in the DAB and the means to control the DAB converter using delays between switching signals lead to the need for a small timestep in simulations. Moreover, several hundreds of modules that include a DAB converter are present in the MARS. The small timestep and the presence of several hundreds of modules lead to a significant rise in the overall simulation time. To address this issue, simulation algorithms like numerical stiffness-based hybrid discretization and the hysteresis relaxation technique are applied to the switched system model of isolated MARS. Additionally, an event-driven interpolating method is introduced to help increase the minimum timestep to simulate the conventional DAB converter model while maintaining high accuracy in the simulation results. The developed model is validated by comparison with its reference model built in the PSCAD/EMTDC and MATLAB software environments using library components.

AI-Based EMT Dynamic Model of PV Systems

Several electromagnetic transient (EMT) dynamic modeling methods are available to model systems like photovoltaic (PV) plants, wind power plants, variable-speed drives, among others. The methods include: (a) physics-based models and (b) data-driven models. The physics-based dynamic models may include high-fidelity switched system model and average-value model that both require the control algorithms included in the models. However, manufacturers typically prefer to provide black-box models to avoid disclosing proprietary. One of the solutions to prevent disclosing control algorithms is the use of data-driven dynamic EMT models of PV systems. In this paper, data-driven dynamic EMT model based on artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms are presented. The AI algorithms evaluated include convolutional neural networks, recurrent neural networks, and nonlinear auto-regressive exogenous model. Automation in generating data and training these models is also discussed in this paper. The results generated by the best AI algorithms have been observed to be greater than 95 % accurate.

Renewable Integration in Hybrid ac-dc Systems using Multi-port Autonomous Reconfigurable Solar power plant (MARS)

To increase inertia and improve primary frequency response of future grids, grid-forming inverters connecting PV to grid and energy storage systems (ESSs) are likely to play an important role. Moreover, high-voltage direct current (HVdc) links will also be an enabler to transfer remote PV generation and for improved grid stability. That is, with increased penetration of PV, discrete development of PV and ESS connecting to transmission ac grid and HVdc links is one of the solutions for stable operation of grid. Here, an integrated concept for integration of PV and ESS to transmission ac grid and HVdc links is proposed that is named as multi-port autonomous reconfigurable solar power plant (MARS). The proposed integrated development reduces the cost associated with respect to discrete development of PV-ESS systems connecting to transmission ac grid and HVdc links. The integrated development incorporates advanced control methods to provide inertial and primary frequency response, reactive power support, and transient stability to manage PV and ESS resources. In this paper, high-fidelity switched system model of the integrated system and grids are developed and detailed simulation results are provided to showcase the stable operation of the integrated system and provision of grid support functions.

Light-activated microtubule-based two-dimensional active nematic

We assess the ability of two light responsive kinesin motor clusters to drive dynamics of microtubule-based active nematics: opto-K401, a processive motor, and opto-K365, a non-processive motor. Measurements reveal an order of magnitude improvement in the contrast of nematic flow speeds between maximally- and minimally-illuminated states for opto-K365 motors when compared to opto-K401 construct. For opto-K365 nematics, we characterize both the steady-state flow and defect density as a function of applied light. We also examine the transient behavior as the system switches between steady-states upon changes in light intensities. Although nematic flows reach a steady state within tens of seconds, the defect density exhibits transient behavior for up to 10 minutes, showing a separation between small-scale active flows and system-scale structural states. Furthermore, our work establishes an experimental platform that can exploit spatiotemporally-heterogeneous patterns of activity to generate targeted dynamical states.

Effects of a psychophysiological system for adaptive automation on performance, workload, and the event-related potential P300 component

The present study examined the effects of an electroencephalographic- (EEG-) based system for adaptive automation on tracking performance and workload. In addition, event-related potentials (ERPs) to a secondary task were derived to determine whether they would provide an additional degree of workload specificity. Participants were run in an adaptive automation condition, in which the system switched between manual and automatic task modes based on the value of each individual's own EEG engagement index; a yoked control condition; or another control group, in which task mode switches followed a random pattern. Adaptive automation improved performance and resulted in lower levels of workload. Further, the P300 component of the ERP paralleled the sensitivity to task demands of the performance and subjective measures across conditions. These results indicate that it is possible to improve performance with a psychophysiological adaptive automation system and that ERPs may provide an alternative means for distinguishing among levels of cognitive task demand in such systems. Actual or potential applications of this research include improved methods for assessing operator workload and performance.

Ultra-Fast Non-Volatile Resistive Switching Devices with Over 512 Distinct and Stable Levels for Memory and Neuromorphic Computing

Low-current multilevel programmability with inherent non-volatility and high stability of resistance states is required for both multi-bit memory storage and deep learning accelerators but is difficult to achieve. Here, in a resistive switching system, this work realizes >512 (>9 bits) distinct non-volatile conductance levels with stable retention for each state with current levels down to the nanoampere range, highly promising for potential integration with small processing nodes with ultra-low power consumption requirements. This is achieved by demonstrating a new thin film design concept that encompasses three key features: an ultra-thin epitaxial oxygen ionic switching layer that provides a tunable energy barrier at the bottom electrode, an overcoat amorphous layer that acts as an ion migration barrier for stable state retention, and a partial conductive filament as a localized electronic transport channel to the epitaxial switching layer. A large dynamic resistance range of up to seven orders of magnitude is achieved with reset-free transitions among intermediate states, and programmability is demonstrated with ultra-fast (20 ns) pulses. Artificial neural network (ANN) simulations, based on the experimental performance and its non-idealities, demonstrate close-to-ideal inference accuracies for various Modified National Institute of Standards and Technology (MNIST) data sets.

Optimal Energy Storage System and Smart Switch Placement in Dynamic Microgrids With Applications to Marine Energy Integration

Here this paper studies a dynamic microgrid (DMG) planning problem that places energy storage systems (ESSs) and smart switches (SSWs) optimally in the system. We apply the proposed methodology to applications concerning marine renewable energy (MRE). MRE is an emerging clean energy resource with enormous capacity but volatile and intermittent energy output profiles. Innovative grid-integration technologies designed to enhance the reliability of an MRE-integrated system are needed. However, there are still limited studies in this regard. Existing works have shown the promising prospect of using a dynamic microgrid (DMG) operational concept to accommodate renewable resources in distribution systems, but they usually assume fixed ESS and SSW installations. To further improve the operational flexibility of DMGs, we propose a DMG planning methodology that optimally places ESSs and SSWs so that a DMG with MRE is warranted with proper resource adequacy and topological flexibility in both the contingency and normal operations. We use realistic case studies based on a real-world distribution network and the U.S. Department of Energy's MRE dataset to verify the value and validity of the proposed work.

Noncanonical folding of peptoid oligomers: Formation of a closed conformation in nonpolar solvent

Peptoids provide a versatile platform for foldamer design, yet their conformational behavior in low-dielectric media remains poorly understood. The structural characteristics of N-1-phenylethylglycine (Nspe) homo-oligomers were inves-tigated in chloroform, a solvent that mimics the interior of lipid bilayers, using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spec-troscopy and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Nspe7 populated two distinct compact conformations, while Nspe10 adopted a single homogeneous conformation related to the previously reported Nspe9 threaded-loop structure. Integrated experimental and computational analysis reveals that these structures are stabilized by cooperative end-to-end intramo-lecular hydrogen bonding, cis-trans backbone isomerism, and hydrophobic side-chain shielding. The resulting structures minimize exposed polar surface area, demonstrating a closed conformation in the low-dielectric environment. These find-ings establish specific chain-length requirements for achieving well-defined closed conformations. This work provides insights into peptoid folding in nonpolar media, enabling rational design strategies for solvent-directed conformational switching systems.

Purely electronic insulator-metal transition in rutile VO 2

Volatile resistive switching in neuromorphic computing can be tuned by external stimuli such as temperature or electric-field. However, this type of switching is generally coupled to structural changes, resulting in slower reaction speed and higher energy consumption when incorporated into an electronic device. The vanadium dioxide (VO 2 ), which has near room temperature metal-insulator transition (MIT), is an archetypical volatile resistive switching system. Here, we demonstrate an isostructural MIT in an ultrathin VO 2 film capped with a photoconductive cadmium sulfide (CdS) layer. Transmission electron microscopy, resistivity experiments, and first-principles calculations show that the hole carriers induced by CdS photovoltaic effect are driving the MIT in rutile VO 2 . The insulating-rutile VO 2 phase has been proved and can remain stable for hours. Our finding provides a new approach to produce purely electronically driven MIT in VO 2 , and widens its applications in fast-response, low-energy neuromorphic devices.

Ab-initio simulations of coherent phonon-induced pumping of carriers in zirconium pentatelluride

Abstract Laser-driven coherent phonons can act as modulated strain fields and modify the adiabatic ground state topology of quantum materials. Here we use time-dependent first-principles and effective model calculations to simulate the effect of the coherent phonon induced by strong terahertz electric field on electronic carriers in the topological insulator ZrTe 5 . We show that a coherent A 1g Raman mode modulation can effectively pump carriers across the band gap, even though the phonon energy is about an order of magnitude smaller than the equilibrium band gap. We reveal the microscopic mechanism of this effect which occurs via Landau–Zener-Stückelberg tunneling of Bloch electrons in a narrow region in the Brillouin zone center where the transient energy gap closes when the system switches from strong to weak topological insulator. The quantum dynamics simulation results are in excellent agreement with recent pump-probe experiments in ZrTe 5 at low temperature.

Frequency transfer via an ultra-stable free-space link

An optical frequency transfer at a wavelength of 1542 nm via an ultra-stable 5-m free-space link with active compensation of the phase noise caused by atmospheric fluctuations is demonstrated. The link-induced phase noise and its contribution to the frequency transfer instability are investigated. It is shown that, with the phase compensation system switched on, the link contribution to the relative transfer instability in terms of Allan deviation reaches 1.7 × 10{sup −19} for a 5000-s averaging time. Bayesian filtering for model predictive control of stochastic gene expression in single cells

This study describes a method for controlling the production of protein in individual cells using stochastic models of gene expression. By combining modern microscopy platforms with optogenetic gene expression, experimentalists are able to accurately apply light to individual cells, which can induce protein production. Here we use a finite state projection based stochastic model of gene expression, along with Bayesian state estimation to control protein copy numbers within individual cells. We compare this method to previous methods that use population based approaches. We also demonstrate the ability of this control strategy to ameliorate discrepancies between the predictions of a deterministic model and stochastic switching system.

Josephson dynamics in two-dimensional ring-shaped condensates

We investigate Josephson transport in a fully closed, two-dimensional superfluid circuit formed by a ring-shaped 87 Rb Bose-Einstein condensate that contains two optical barriers acting as movable weak links. Translating these barriers at controlled speeds imposes a steady bias current, enabling direct mapping of the current-chemical-potential (𝐼−Δ⁢𝜇) characteristics. For narrow junctions (𝑤 ≈ 1µ⁢m), the circuit exhibits a pronounced dc branch that terminates at a critical current 𝐼 𝑐 = 9⁢(1) × 10 3 s −1 ; above this threshold, the system switches to an ac, resistive regime. Classical-field simulations that include the moving barriers quantitatively reproduce both the nonlinear 𝐼−Δ⁢𝜇 curve and the measured 𝐼 𝑐 , validating the underlying microscopic picture. Analysis of the ensuing phase dynamics shows that dissipation is mediated by the nucleation and traversal of vortex-antivortex pairs through the junctions, while the bulk condensate remains globally phase locked—direct evidence of the ring's topological constraint enforcing quantized circulation. These results establish a cold-atom analog of a superconducting quantum interference device in which Josephson dynamics can be resolved at the single-vortex level, providing a versatile platform for atomtronic circuit elements, nonreciprocal Josephson devices, and on-chip Sagnac interferometers for multiaxis rotation sensing.
