Experimental investigation of a 4 and 1/2 stage turbine with very high stage loading factor. 2: Turbine performance

The experimental test program results of a 4 1/2-stage turbine with a very high stage loading factor are presented. A four-stage turbine was tested with and without outlet turning vanes. The 4 1/2-stage turbine achieved a design point total-to-total efficiency of 0.853. The outlet turning vane design point performance was 0.4 percent of the overall 4 1/2-stage turbine efficiency. Tests were conducted at various levels of Reynolds number and indicated decreases in turbine efficiency and equivalent weight flow with decreasing Reynolds number.

Two-stage chain sampling inspection plans with different sample sizes in the two stages

A further generalization of the family of 'two-stage' chain sampling inspection plans is developed - viz, the use of different sample sizes in the two stages. Evaluation of the operating characteristics is accomplished by the Markov chain approach of the earlier work, modified to account for the different sample sizes. Markov chains for a number of plans are illustrated and several algebraic solutions are developed. Since these plans involve a variable amount of sampling, an evaluation of the average sampling number (ASN) is developed. A number of OC curves and ASN curves are presented. Some comparisons with plans having only one sample size are presented and indicate that improved discrimination is achieved by the two-sample-size plans.

Design of nonimaging concentrators as second stages in tandem with image-forming first-stage concentrators

The paper discusses the paraboloidal mirror as a tracking solar concentrator, fitting a nonimaging second stage to the paraboloidal mirror, other image-forming systems as first stages, and tracking systems in two-dimensional geometry. Because of inherent aberrations, the paraboloidal mirror cannot achieve the thermodynamic limit. It is shown how paraboloidal mirrors of short focal ratio and similar systems can have their flux concentration enhanced to near the thermodynamic limit by the addition of nonimaging compound elliptical concentrators.

Three stage rocket vehicle with parallel staging

A three stage rocket vehicle has a large forward propellant tank and a small aft propellant tank axially aligned. Secured to the rear end of the aft propellant tank is an engine mount structure carrying rocket engines. Offset and secured to the propellant tanks is a payload structure. The propellants from the large forward tank are fed into the aft propellant tank. This arrangement enables the vehicle to parallel stage its use of engines and components and results in significant payload capability. The design and components fully utilize existing space shuttle elements and tooling.

Three-stage linear, split-Stirling cryocooler for 1 to 2K magnetic cold stage

A long-life, linear, high efficiency 8K split Stirling cycle cryocooler was designed, built, and tested. The refrigerator is designed for cooling a 50 mW, 1.5K magnetic cold stage. Dual opposed piston compressors are driven by moving-coil linear motors. The three stage expander, although not completed, is also driven by a linear motor and is designed to produce 1 SW at 60K, 4W at 16K, and 1.2W at 8K. The cold regenerator employs a parallel gap construction for high efficiency. The key technology areas addressed include warm and cold flexible suspension bearings and a new cold regenerator geometry for high efficiency at 8K.

Stage Separation Wind Tunnel Tests of a Generic Two-Stage-to-Orbit Launch Vehicle

In support of NASA s Space Launch Initiative Program, stage separation wind tunnel tests of a generic two-stage-to-orbit (TSTO) launch vehicle were conducted to determine the interference aerodynamic forces and moments and to determine the proximity flow environment. The tests were conducted in the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center s Aerodynamic Research Facility using a manual separation fixture for a Mach number range of 2.74 to 4.96 and separation distances up to 80 percent and 35 percent of the body length in the vehicle X and Z coordinates, respectively. For the TSTO bimese, winged-body vehicle configuration, both wing-to-wing and wing-to-fuselage configurations were tested. Individual-body force and moment, schlieren, and surface pressure data were acquired. The results showed that the proximity aerodynamics were dominated by complex bow shock interactions, and that he booster was statically unstable at several separation positions. As compared to the isolated body, the proximity normal force change with pitch angle was found to be nearly the same, and the proximity axial force increased, in general, by 3% for both bodies.

Effect of Various Blade Modifications on Performance of A16-Stage Axial-Flow Compressor. V - Effect on Over-All Performance Characteristics of a 20-Percent Reduction in Solidity of the Fourteenth Through Sixteenth Stage Rotors

The performance of a 16-stage axial-flow compressor, in which the mean-radius solidity was reduced from 1.28 to 1.02 in the fourteenth through sixteenth stage rotors was determined. The performance of this modification was compared with that of the compressor with original rotors. The reduced solidity resulted in slightly improved performance.
