All-loop soft theorem for pions

In this paper we discuss a generalization of the Adler zero to loop integrands in the planar limit of the S U ( N ) nonlinear sigma model (NLSM). The Adler zero for integrands is violated starting at the two-loop order and is only recovered after integration. Here we propose a soft theorem satisfied by loop integrands with any number of loops and legs. This requires a generalization of NLSM integrands to an off shell framework with certain deformed kinematics. Defining an , we identify a simple nonvanishing soft behavior of integrands, which we call the . We find that the proposed soft theorem is satisfied by the “surface” integrand of Arkani-Hamed and Figueiredo [], which is obtained from the shifted Tr φ 3 surfacehedron integrand. Finally, we derive an on shell version of the algebraic soft theorem that takes an interesting form in terms of self-energy factors and lower-loop integrands in a mixed theory of pions and scalars. Anomalous U ( 1 ) A couplings and the Columbia plot

When the quark masses are lighter than those in QCD, the standard lore is that a chiral transition of first order must emerge for three light flavors. Recently, however, numerical simulations on the lattice suggest that the chiral transition is of second order in the chiral limit. Using an extended linear sigma model in the mean field approximation, we study the relation between terms which break the anomalous, U ( 1 ) A symmetry and the order of the chiral phase transition, especially how a chiral transition of second order can arise for three massless flavors. We note that in an (unphysical) region of the “Columbia” phase diagram, when the strange quark mass is light and negative, corresponding to topological angle θ = π , the C P symmetry is spontaneously broken. Hidden amplitude zeros from the double-copy map

Recently, Arkani-Hamed proposed the existence of zeros in scattering amplitudes in certain quantum field theories including the cubic adjoint scalar theory Tr ( ϕ 3 ) , the S U ( N ) nonlinear sigma model and Yang-Mills theory. These hidden zeros are special kinematic points where the amplitude vanishes and factorizes into a product of lower-point amplitudes, similar to factorization near poles. In this paper, we show a close connection between the existence of such zeros and the double-copy map. In fact, compatibility with the Bern-Carrasco-Johansson relations requires the presence of these zeros. We also show that these zeros extend via the Kawai-Lewellen-Tye relations to special Galileon amplitudes and their corrections, evincing that these hidden zeros are also present in permutation-invariant amplitudes. Many-Body Level Statistics of Single-Particle Quantum Chaos

We consider a noninteracting many-fermion system populating levels of a unitary random matrix ensemble (equivalent to the q = 2 complex Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model)—a generic model of single-particle quantum chaos. We study the corresponding many-particle level statistics by calculating the spectral form factor analytically using algebraic methods of random matrix theory, and match it with an exact numerical simulation. Despite the integrability of the theory, the many-body spectral rigidity is found to have a surprisingly rich landscape. In particular, we find a residual repulsion of distant many-body levels stemming from single-particle chaos, together with islands of level attraction. These results are encoded in an exponential ramp in the spectral form factor, which we show to be a universal feature of nonergodic many-fermion systems embedded in a chaotic medium.

Volume-preserving diffeomorphism as nonabelian higher-rank gauge symmetry

We propose nonabelian higher-rank gauge theories in 2+1D and 3+1D. The gauge group is constructed from the volume-preserving diffeomorphisms of space. We show that the intriguing physics of the lowest Landau level (LLL) limit can be interpreted as the consequences of the symmetry. We derive the renowned Girvin-MacDonald-Platzman (GMP) algebra as well as the topological Wen-Zee term within our formalism. Using the gauge symmetry in 2+1D, we derive the LLL effective action of vortex crystal in rotating Bose gas as well as Wigner crystal of electron in an applied magnetic field. We show that the nonlinear sigma models of ferromagnets in 2+1D and 3+1D exhibit the higher-rank gauge symmetries that we introduce in this paper. We interpret the fractonic behavior of the excitations on the lowest Landau level and of skyrmions in ferromagnets as the consequence of the higher-rank gauge symmetry.

Candidate phases for SU(2) adjoint QCD$_4$ with two flavors from $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory

We study four-dimensional adjoint QCD with gauge group SU(2) and two Weyl fermion flavors, which has an SU(2) R chiral symmetry. The infrared behavior of this theory is not firmly established. We explore candidate infrared phases by embedding adjoint QCD into N = 2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory deformed by a supersymmetry-breaking scalar mass M that preserves all global symmetries and 't Hooft anomalies. This includes 't Hooft anomalies that are only visible when the theory is placed on manifolds that do not admit a spin structure. The consistency of this procedure is guaranteed by a nonabelian spin-charge relation involving the SU(2) R symmetry that is familiar from topologically twisted N = 2 theories. Since every vacuum on the Coulomb branch of the N = 2 theory necessarily matches all 't Hooft anomalies, we can generate candidate phases for adjoint QCD by deforming the theories in these vacua while preserving all symmetries and 't Hooft anomalies. One such deformation is the supersymmetry-breaking scalar mass M itself, which can be reliably analyzed when M is small. In this regime it gives rise to an exotic Coulomb phase without chiral symmetry breaking. By contrast, the theory near the monopole and dyon points can be deformed to realize a candidate phase with monopole-induced confinement and chiral symmetry breaking. The low-energy theory consists of two copies of a CP 1 sigma model, which we analyze in detail. Certain topological couplings that are likely to be present in this CP 1 model turn the confining solitonic string of the model into a topological insulator. We also examine the behavior of various candidate phases under fermion mass deformations. We speculate on the possible large-M behavior of the deformed N = 2 theory and conjecture that the CP 1 phase eventually becomes dominant.

Analysis of the doubly radiative decays $η^{(')}$ → $π^0γγ$ and $η^{(')}$ → $ηγγ$

We study the doubly radiative decays $η^{(')}$ → $π^0γγ$ and $η^{(')}$ → $ηγγ$ in terms of vector and scalar meson exchange contributions using, respectively, the frameworks of Vector Meson Dominance and the Linear Sigma model. Predictions for the ${m}_{γγ}^{2}$ invariant mass distribution and branching ratios are given, and a discussion of how they compare to experimental data is carried out.

Current-Driven Magnetization Reversal in Orbital Chern Insulators

Graphene multilayers with flat moiré minibands can exhibit the quantized anomalous Hall effect due to the combined influence of spontaneous valley polarization and topologically nontrivial valley-projected bands. The sign of the Hall effect in these Chern insulators can be reversed either by applying an external magnetic field, or by driving a transport current through the system. Here we propose a current-driven mechanism whereby reversal occurs along lines in the (current I , magnetic-field B ) control parameter space with slope d I / d B = ( e / h ) M A M ( 1 – γ 2 ) / γ , where M is the magnetization, A M is the moiré unit cell area, and γ < 1 is the ratio of the chemical potential difference between valleys along a domain wall to the electrical bias e V .

Linear sigma dark matter

We present a model of self-interacting dark matter based on QCD-like theories and inspired by the proximity of a 0 (980 ± 20) to the $K\bar{K}$ (990) threshold. Dark matter is comprised of dark pions which self-scatter via the σ resonance close to the ππ threshold. While the linear sigma model serves as a qualitative guide, a fully unitary description of the scattering in the strongly coupled regime is given by effective range theory. The introduction of a kinetically mixed dark photon allows the dark pion to either freeze-out or -in. We study the viable parameter space which explains the observed relic abundance while evading all current constraints. Searches for dark matter self interactions at different scales, (in)direct detection signals, and (in)visibly-decaying dark photons will test this model in the near future.

Population-level Dark Energy Constraints from Strong Gravitational Lensing using Simulation-Based Inference

In this work, we present a scalable approach for inferring the dark energy equation-of-state parameter ($w$) from a population of strong gravitational lens images using Simulation-Based Inference (SBI). Strong gravitational lensing offers crucial insights into cosmology, but traditional Monte Carlo methods for cosmological inference are computationally prohibitive and inadequate for processing the thousands of lenses anticipated from future cosmic surveys. New tools for inference, such as SBI using Neural Ratio Estimation (NRE), address this challenge effectively. By training a machine learning model on simulated data of strong lenses, we can learn the likelihood-to-evidence ratio for robust inference. Our scalable approach enables more constrained population-level inference of $w$ compared to individual lens analysis, constraining $w$ to within $1\sigma$. Our model can be used to provide cosmological constraints from forthcoming strong lens surveys, such as the 4MOST Strong Lensing Spectroscopic Legacy Survey (4SLSLS), which is expected to observe 10,000 strong lenses.

Strongly coupled $\mathrm{QFT}$ dynamics via $\mathrm{TQFT}$ coupling

We consider a class of quantum field theories and quantum mechanics, which we couple to $\mathbb{Z}$ N topological QFTs, in order to classify non-perturbative effects in the original theory. The $\mathbb{Z}$ N TQFT structure arises naturally from turning on a classical background field for a $\mathbb{Z}$ N 0- or 1-form global symmetry. In SU(N) Yang-Mills theory coupled to $\mathbb{Z}$ N TQFT, the non-perturbative expansion parameter is exp[-S I /N] = exp[-8π 2 /g 2 N] both in the semi-classical weak coupling domain and strong coupling domain, corresponding to a fractional topological charge configurations. To classify the non-perturbative effects in original SU(N) theory, we must use PSU(N) bundle and lift configurations (critical points at infinity) for which there is no obstruction back to SU(N). These provide a refinement of instanton sums: integer topological charge, but crucially fractional action configurations contribute, providing a TQFT protected generalization of resurgent semi-classical expansion to strong coupling. Monopole-instantons (or fractional instantons) on T 3 x $S^1_L$ can be interpreted as tunneling events in the ’t Hooft flux background in the PSU(N) bundle. The construction provides a new perspective to the strong coupling regime of QFTs and resolves a number of old standing issues, especially, fixes the conflicts between the large-N and instanton analysis. We derive the mass gap at θ = 0 and gaplessness at θ = π in $\mathbb{CP}$ 1 model, and mass gap for arbitrary θ in $\mathbb{CP}$ N-1 , N ≥ 3 on $\mathbb{R}$ 2 .

Replica symmetry breaking for the integrable two-site Sachdev–Ye–Kitaev model

We analyze a two-body non-Hermitian two-site Sachdev–Ye–Kitaev (SYK) model with the couplings of one site complex conjugated to the other site. This model, with no explicit coupling between the sites, shows an infinite number of second-order phase transitions, which is a consequence of the factorization of the partition function into a product over Matsubara frequencies. We calculate the quenched free energy in two different ways: first in terms of the single-particle energies and second by solving the Schwinger–Dyson equations of the two-site model. The first calculation can be done entirely in terms of a one-site model. The conjugate replica enters due to non-analyticities when Matsubara frequencies enter the spectral support of the coupling matrix. The second calculation is based on the replica trick of the two-site partition function. Both methods give the same result. The free-fermion partition function can also be rephrased as a matrix model for the coupling matrix. Up to minor details, this model is the random matrix model that describes the chiral phase transition of QCD, and the order parameter of the two-body model corresponds to the chiral condensate of QCD. Comparing to the corresponding four-body model, we are able to determine which features of the free energy are due to the chaotic nature of the four-body model. The high-temperature phase of both models is entropy dominated, and in both cases, the free energy is determined by the spectral density. The chaotic four-body SYK model has a low-temperature phase whose free energy is almost temperature-independent, signaling an effective gap of the theory even though the actual spectrum does not exhibit a gap. On the other hand, the low-temperature free energy of the two-body SYK model is not flat; in fact, it oscillates to arbitrarily low temperature. This indicates a less desirable feature that the entropy of the two-body model is not always positive in the low-temperature phase, which most likely is a consequence of the non-hermiticity.

Skyrmion superconductivity: DMRG evidence for a topological route to superconductivity

It was recently suggested that the topology of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene's (MATBG) flat bands could provide a novel mechanism for superconductivity distinct from both weakly coupled BCS theory and the d-wave phenomenology of the high-T c cuprates. In this work, we examine this possibility using a density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) study of a model which captures the essential features of MATBG's symmetry and topology. Here, using large-scale cylinder-DMRG calculations to obtain the ground state and its excitations as a function of the electron doping, we find clear evidence for superconductivity driven by the binding of electrons into charge-2e skyrmions. Remarkably, this binding is observed even in the regime where the unscreened Coulomb repulsion is by far the largest energy scale, demonstrating the robustness of this topological, all-electronic pairing mechanism.
