Cubic AgMnSbTe 3 Semiconductor with a High Thermoelectric Performance

The reaction of MnTe with AgSbTe 2 in an equimolar ratio (ATMS) provides a new semiconductor, AgMnSbTe 3 . AgMnSbTe 3 crystallizes in an average rock-salt NaCl structure with Ag, Mn, and Sb cations statistically occupying the Na sites. AgMnSbTe 3 is a p-type semiconductor with a narrow band gap of ~0.33 eV. A pair distribution function analysis indicates that local distortions are associated with the location of the Ag atoms in the lattice. Density functional theory calculations suggest a specific electronic band structure with multi-peak valence band maxima prone to energy convergence. In addition, Ag 2 Te nanograins precipitate at grain boundaries of AgMnSbTe 3 . Here, the energy offset of the valance band edge between AgMnSbTe 3 and Ag 2 Te is ~0.05 eV, which implies that Ag 2 Te precipitates exhibit a negligible effect on the hole transmission. As a result, ATMS exhibits a high power factor of ~12.2 μWcm -1 K -2 at 823 K, ultralow lattice thermal conductivity of ~0.34 Wm -1 K -1 (823 K), high peak ZT of ~1.46 at 823 K, and high average ZT of ~0.87 in the temperature range of 400–823 K.

Half-Heusler alloys as emerging high power density thermoelectric cooling materials

Abstract To achieve optimal thermoelectric performance, it is crucial to manipulate the scattering processes within materials to decouple the transport of phonons and electrons. In half-Heusler (hH) compounds, selective defect reduction can significantly improve performance due to the weak electron-acoustic phonon interaction. This study utilized Sb-pressure controlled annealing process to modulate the microstructure and point defects of Nb 0.55 Ta 0.40 Ti 0.05 FeSb compound, resulting in a 100% increase in carrier mobility and a maximum power factor of 78 µW cm −1 K −2 , approaching the theoretical prediction for NbFeSb single crystal. This approach yielded the highest average zT of ~0.86 among hH in the temperature range of 300-873 K. The use of this material led to a 210% enhancement in cooling power density compared to Bi 2 Te 3 -based devices and a conversion efficiency of 12%. These results demonstrate a promising strategy for optimizing hH materials for near-room-temperature thermoelectric applications.

A Sodium–Antimony–Telluride Intermetallic Allows Sodium-Metal Cycling at 100% Depth of Discharge and as an Anode-Free Metal Battery

In this work, repeated cold rolling and folding is employed to fabricate a metallurgical composite of sodium–antimony–telluride Na 2 (Sb 2/6 Te 3/6 Vac 1/6 ) dispersed in electrochemically active sodium metal, termed “NST-Na.” This new intermetallic has a vacancy-rich thermodynamically stable face-centered-cubic structure and enables state-of-the-art electrochemical performance in widely employed carbonate and ether electrolytes. NST-Na achieves 100% depth-of-discharge (DOD) in 1 m NaPF 6 in G2, with 15 mAh cm –2 at 1 mA cm –2 and Coulombic efficiency (CE) of 99.4%, for 1000 h of plating/stripping. Sodium-metal batteries (SMBs) with NST-Na and Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 (NVP) or sulfur cathodes give significantly improved energy, cycling, and CE (>99%). An anode-free battery with NST collector and NVP obtains 0.23% capacity decay per cycle. Imaging and tomography using conventional and cryogenic microscopy (Cryo-EM) indicate that the sodium metal fills the open space inside the self-supporting sodiophilic NST skeleton, resulting in dense (pore-free and solid electrolyte interphase (SEI)-free) metal deposits with flat surfaces. The baseline Na deposit consists of filament-like dendrites and “dead metal”, intermixed with pores and SEI. Density functional theory calculations show that the uniqueness of NST lies in the thermodynamic stability of the Na atoms (rather than clusters) on its surface that leads to planar wetting, and in its own stability that prevents decomposition during cycling.
