Atomic Data and Emission Line Intensities for CA VII

In the present work we calculate energy levels, transition probabilities and electron-ion collisional excitation rates for the 3s(sup 2)3p(sup 2), 3s3p(sup 3) and 3s(sup 2)3p3d configurations of the silicon-like ion Ca VII. The total number of intermediate coupling levels considered is 27. Collision strengths are calculated at seven incident electron energies: 8, 10, 15, 20, 30,40 and 60 Ry, using the Distorted Wave approximation and a 5-configuration model. Excitation rate coefficients are calculated by assuming a Maxwellian distribution of velocities and are used to calculate level populations and line emissivities under the assumption of statistical equilibrium. Line intensity ratios are calculated and compared with observed values measured from SERTS and SOHO/CDS spectra. The diagnostic potential of Ca VII is demonstrated, with particular emphasis on the possibility to measure the Ne/Ca relative abundance through simultaneous observations of Ca VII and N VI lines. Ca VII proves to be an excellent tool for the study of the FIP effect in the solar transition region.

Mergers, cooling flows, and evaporation

Mergers (the capture of cold gas, especially) can have a profound influence on the hot coronal gas of early-type galaxies and clusters, potentially inducing symptoms hitherto attributed to a cooling flow, if thermal conduction is operative in the coronal plasma. Heat can be conducted from the hot phase into the cold phase, simultaneously ionizing the cold gas to make optical filaments, while locally cooling the coronal gas to mimic a cooling-flow. If there is heat conduction, though, there is no standard cooling-flow since radiative losses are balanced by conduction and not mass deposition. Amongst the strongest observational support for the existence of cooling-flows is the presence of intermediate temperature gas with x-ray emission-line strengths in agreement with cooling-flow models. Here, x-ray line strengths are calculated for this alternative model, in which mergers are responsible for the observed optical and x-ray properties. Since gas around 10(exp 4) K is thermally stable, the cold cloud need not necessarily evaporate and hydrostatic solutions exist. Good agreement with the x-ray data is obtained. The relative strengths of intermediate temperature x-ray emission lines are in significantly better agreement with a simple conduction model than with published cooling-flow models. The good agreement of the conduction model with optical, infrared and x-ray data indicates that significantly more theoretical effort into this type of solution would be profitable.

Improved excitation rate coefficients for the n = 2 and n = 3 levels of Ca XIX and Fe XXV including fine structure

Reently calculated collision strengths, including relativistic and resonance effects, are employed to compute Maxwellian averaged collision strengths for 78 transitions involving states of principal quantum numbers 2-1 and 3-1 in Ca XIX and Fe XXV. These rate parameters are tabulated at temperatures of interest in astrophysical and labortory plasmas with radiation in the hard X-ray wavelength range. For some transitions, significant differences are found with the earlier calculations of Pradhan, Norcross, and Hummer (1981).

Collision strengths for dipole-allowed transitions in S II

Calculations of collision strengths for electron-impact excitations of S II from the ground state 3p3 4S0 to excited states 3p4 4P, 3d 4F, 3d 4D, 4s 4P, and 3d 4P were carried out using the R-matrix code described by Berrington et al. (1978) and the NIEM code described by Henry et al. (1981). Results are presented for the thermally averaged collision strengths for the five-state and six-state calculations. Convergence behaviors were examined by comparison with the six-state calculations and the previously obtained two-state calculations. Uncertainties for these transitions were estimated to be within 20 percent, except for the 4S0 - 3p4 4P transition in which a 40 percent uncertainty was estimated.

Oscillator strengths and collision strengths for neutral sulfur

Configuration-interaction target wave functions are used in the present calculation of collision strengths, for electron impact excitation of neutral sulfur from the group 3p4 3P state to excited states 3p3 4s 3S0, 3p3(4S0)3d 3D0, and 3p3 4s 3P0, in a close coupling approximation for the energy range up to 1,000,000 K. Configuration-interaction target wave functions are used in the calculation of collision strengths, and oscillator strengths for various triplet transitions are reported together with transitions between 3p4 1D and 3p4 1S and other singlet-excited states.

Harmonics of 60 Hz in power systems caused by geomagnetic disturbances

Simultaneous VLF/ULF observations carried out near Winnipeg, Manitoba show that geomagnetic disturbances control the behavior of harmonics of 60 Hz man-made electric power. The harmonics of 60 Hz detected by the VLF receiver are at multiples of 180 Hz, indicating that they originated from a 3 phase ac power system. Under geomagnetically quiet conditions, only odd harmonics of 70 Hz were detected. In disturbed conditions, both odd and even harmonics were excited. The strength of each harmonic changed concurrently with geomagnetic pulsation (ULF) activity. These findings seem to indicate that a portion of telluric currents shunted into the power line system through the neutrals of the Y-connected transformers give rise to a dc bias to the transformer core materials and that it distorts their hysteresis loops, activating harmonics of 60 Hz power. A mathematical proof is given that a hysteresis loop having a point of symmetry generates odd harmonics only, whereas loops lacking in point-symmetry generally give rise to both odd and even harmonics. A general formula was obtained to calculate the strength of each harmonic based on the shape of the hysteresis loop.

Temperature Effects on Adhesive Bond Strengths and Modulus for Commonly Used Spacecraft Structural Adhesives

A study was performed to observe how changes in temperature and substrate material affected the strength and modulus of an adhesive bondline. Seven different adhesives commonly used in aerospace bonded structures were tested. Aluminum, titanium and Invar adherends were cleaned and primed, then bonded using the manufacturer's recommendations. Following surface preparation, the coupons were bonded with the adhesives. The single lap shear coupons were then pull tested per ASTM D 1002 Standard Test Method for Apparent Shear Strength of Single- Lap-Joint over a temperature range from -150 deg C up to +150 deg C. The ultimate strength was calculated and the resulting data were converted into B-basis design allowables. Average and Bbasis results were compared. Results obtained using aluminum adherends are reported. The effects of using different adherend materials and temperature were also studied and will be reported in a subsequent paper. Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) was used to study variations in adhesive modulus with temperature. This work resulted in a highly useful database for comparing adhesive performance over a wide range of temperatures, and has facilitated selection of the appropriate adhesive for spacecraft structure applications.

Radiative lifetimes and absolute oscillator strengths for the SiO A/super 1/Pi to X/super 1/Sigma+ transition.

Measurement of a radiative lifetime of 9.6 (plus or minus 1.0) nsec for the SiO A(super 1)Pi state is reported. RKR Franck-Condon factors have been computed and, with these, absolute oscillator strengths are calculated. A band system at 3022 A has been found that may be due to SiO+, but the band is not resolved at our experimental resolution, and identification remains uncertain. The upper state of the carrier of this spectrum has a radiative lifetime of 8.3 (plus or minus 0.8) nsec.

The effect of broken stringers on the stress intensity factor for a uniformly stiffened sheet containing a crack

A linear elastic stress analysis was made of a centrally cracked sheet stiffened by riveted, uniformly spaced and sized stringers. The stress intensity factor for the sheet and the load concentration factor for the most highly loaded stringer were determined for various numbers of broken stringers. A broken stringer causes the stress intensity factor to be very high when the crack tip is near the broken stringer, but causes little effect when the crack tip extends beyond several intact stringers. A broken stringer also causes an increase in the load concentration factor of the adjacent stringers. The calculated residual strengths and fatigue-crack-growth lives of a stiffened aluminum sheet with a broken stringer were only slightly less than a sheet with all intact stringers, and were still much higher than those of an unstiffened sheet.

The failure of notched specimens of boron-fiber reinforced 6061 aluminum alloy

The effect of notches on the strength of boron fiber reinforced 6061 aluminum alloy was determined at room temperature, 300 F, and 600 F. Both unidirectional and cross-plied specimens were tested. The strengths of individual fibers were measured, and upper and lower bounds of composite strength were calculated using bundle theory. Fracture tests were performed on specimens containing center slots of various lengths, and the values of the critical stress intensity factor for initial crack propagation or final failure were calculated. For unidirectional specimens, these parameters depended on thickness; for cross-plied specimens, fairly constant values were obtained at room temperature. The cross-plied material invariably failed at a lower stress as the environmental temperature was raised.

The O I /6300 A/ airglow

The production and destruction of O(D-1) atoms in the thermosphere are studied on the basis of observations conducted by the Atmosphere Explorer-C spacecraft. In particular, measurements of the O I transition at 6300 A provide a means of calculating the strength of the O2(+) dissociative recombination source of O(D-1), which amounts to 1.33. A value of 3 times 10 to the minus 11th power cu cm/sec is established for the quenching rate of O(D-1) by molecular nitrogen, while the photodissociation rate for O2 is set at three millionths per sec. These determinations are in agreement with the conventional theory of the day 6300-A airglow.

Advanced composites in sailplane structures: Application and mechanical properties

Advanced Composites in sailplanes mean the use of carbon and aramid fibers in an epoxy matrix. Weight savings were in the range of 8 to 18% in comparison with glass fiber structures. The laminates will be produced by hand-layup techniques and all material tests were done with these materials. These values may be used for calculation of strength and stiffness, as well as for comparison of the materials to get a weight-optimum construction. Proposals for material-optimum construction are mentioned.

The Voyager 1 EUV spectrum of the Io plasma torus

The Voyager 1 EUV spectrum of the hot Io plasma torus obtained before encounter in 1979 at a range of 4,800,000 km is analyzed in terms of a collisional model with improved collision strengths. Model calculations are based entirely on steady-state equilibrium between electron excitation-deactivation and radiative decay in the subspecies structure, and plasma temperature and species number densities are derived by fitting model spectra to the observations. Lines of S II, S III, S IV, O II, and O III are found to be dominant in the plasma torus, at torus half width densities of 44, 160, 220, 50, and 340/cu cm, respectively, and lines of S V and K III may also be present. An effective electron temperature of 80,000 K is estimated for the central dense region near 6 Jupiter radii. Model calculations are in substantial agreement with other spectroscopic observations of the hot torus; however, the observations exhibit strong morphological differences with recent ground-based observations of S II emission, and calculated ion densities differ from in situ Voyager 1 plasma science measurements.

A deformation analysis of flat flexible gear and its equation of original curved surfaces

The equation of the original curved surface of end harmonic gearing is determined by displacement analysis of flat flexible gear. The displacement analysis is also used to calculate the strength and rigidity of the gear. The latter is regarded as a circular plate with two concentrated loads, since its torsional rigidity is much larger than its bending rigidity. Small-deflection theory of thin plates is used to solve for the displacement of any point in the middle plane of the gear. New expressions are given for radial and tangential displacements of the middle plane under asymmetrical loading. A digital computer is used to obtain numerical values for the displacements.

Oscillator strengths for Ar VII, Ca IX and Fe XV

The excitation energies and oscillator strengths are calculated for electric-dipole-allowed and intercombination transitions between 3s2 1S, 3s3p(1,3)P0, 3p2 3P, 1D, 1S and 3s3d(1,3)D states in Ar VII, Ca IX, and Fe XV ions of the magnesium sequence. These states are represented by the fairly large configuration-interaction expansions. The calculations have been carried out in both LS and intermediate coupling schemes. The relativistic corrections have been included through the Breit-Pauli Hamiltonian. The results are compared with previous theoretical calculations and with measurements.
