On the decaying-sterile-neutrino solution to the electron (anti)neutrino appearance anomalies

We explore the hypothesis that the unexplained data from LSND and MiniBooNE are evidence for a new, heavy neutrino mass-eigenstate that mixes with the muon-type neutrino and decays into an electron-type neutrino and a new, very light scalar particle. We consider two different decay scenarios, one with Majorana neutrinos, one with Dirac neutrinos; both fit the data equally well. We find a reasonable, albeit not excellent, fit to the data of MiniBooNE and LSND. The decaying-sterile-neutrino hypothesis, however, cleanly evades constraints from disappearance searches and precision measurements of leptonic meson decays, as long as $1~{\rm MeV}\gtrsim m_4\gtrsim 10$~keV. The SBN program at Fermilab should be able to definitively test the decaying-sterile-neutrino hypothesis.

Steam explosion pretreatment coupling high-temperature short-time sterilization facilitating cellulose degradation and sporulation-regulatory gene expression in high-solid fermentation

Steam explosion coupling high-temperature short-time sterilization (SE-HTST) was exploited to modify cellulosic biomass medium properties and promote high-solid fermentation (HSF). Biomass characterization analysis showed that SE-HTST enlarged microstructural pores and cavities in solid media, providing more effective space for microbial growth. Meanwhile, SE-HTST helped to release glucose from the cellulose with 35.8 ± 4.5, 20.0 ± 2.3, and 12.3 ± 5.7 mg glucose/g dry medium at 24, 48, and 72 h of fermentation, which were 3.1, 2.3, and 1.5 times higher than that in medium from conventional thermal sterilization (CTS), respectively. SE-HTST increased the viable cell and spore number of Bacillus subtilis by 1.8 and 1.6 times at 72 h of fermentation compared to CTS. Moreover, the expressions of master transcriptional gene spo0A and the early sigma factors of sigF and sigE genes gradually increased in the SE-HTST medium, showing enhanced sporulation in HSF. Therefore, SE-HTST is an effective strategy for facilitating cellulose degradation, improving glucose nutrients in biomass medium, and promoting sporulation-regulatory gene expression during high-solid fermentation, which enhances the production of microbial ecological agents using B. subtilis significantly.

New high-sensitivity searches for neutrons converting into antineutrons and/or sterile neutrons at the HIBEAM/NNBAR experiment at the European Spallation Source

The violation of baryon number, , is an essential ingredient for the preferential creation of matter over antimatter needed to account for the observed baryon asymmetry in the Universe. However, such a process has yet to be experimentally observed. The HIBEAM/NNBAR program is a proposed two-stage experiment at the European Spallation Source to search for baryon number violation. The program will include high-sensitivity searches for processes that violate baryon number by one or two units: free neutron–antineutron oscillation () via mixing, neutron–antineutron oscillation via regeneration from a sterile neutron state (), and neutron disappearance (n → n′); the effective process of neutron regeneration () is also possible. The program can be used to discover and characterize mixing in the neutron, antineutron and sterile neutron sectors. The experiment addresses topical open questions such as the origins of baryogenesis and the nature of dark matter, and is sensitive to scales of new physics substantially in excess of those available at colliders. A goal of the program is to open a discovery window to neutron conversion probabilities (sensitivities) by up to three orders of magnitude compared with previous searches. The opportunity to make such a leap in sensitivity tests should not be squandered. The experiment pulls together a diverse international team of physicists from the particle (collider and low energy) and nuclear physics communities, while also including specialists in neutronics and magnetics.

Possible hints of sterile neutrinos in recent measurements of the Hubble parameter

Local Universe observations find a value of the Hubble constant H 0 that is larger than the value inferred from the Cosmic Microwave Background and other early Universe measurements, assuming known physics and the ΛCDM cosmological model. We show that additional radiation in active neutrinos produced just before Big Bang Nucleosynthesis by an unstable sterile neutrino with mass m s = O(10) MeV can alleviate this discrepancy. Furthermore, the necessary masses and couplings of the sterile neutrino, assuming it mixes primarily with ν τ and/or ν μ neutrinos, are within reach of Super-Kamiokande as well as upcoming laboratory experiments such as NA62 and DUNE.

Constraints on metastable superheavy dark matter coupled to sterile neutrinos with the Pierre Auger Observatory

Dark matter particles could be superheavy, provided their lifetime is much longer than the age of the Universe. Using the sensitivity of the Pierre Auger Observatory to ultrahigh energy neutrinos and photons, we constrain a specific extension of the Standard Model of particle physics that meets the lifetime requirement for a superheavy particle by coupling it to a sector of ultralight sterile neutrinos. Our results show that, for a typical dark coupling constant of 0.1, the mixing angle θ m between active and sterile neutrinos must satisfy, roughly, θ m ≲ 1.5 × 10 − 6 ( M X / 10 9 GeV ) − 2 for a mass M X of the dark-matter particle between 10 8 GeV and 10 11 GeV . Methods and stability tests associated with the sterile neutrino search using improved high-energy ν μ event reconstruction in IceCube

We provide supporting details for the search for a 3 + 1 sterile neutrino using data collected over 10.7 years at the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. The analysis uses atmospheric muon-flavored neutrinos from 0.5 to 100 TeV that traverse Earth to reach the IceCube detector and finds a best-fit point at sin 2 ( 2 θ 24 ) = 0.16 and Δ m 41 2 = 3.5 eV 2 with a goodness-of-fit p value of 12% and consistency with the null hypothesis of no oscillations to sterile neutrinos with a p value of 3.1%. Several improvements were made over past analyses, which are reviewed in this article, including upgrades to the reconstruction and the study of sources of systematic uncertainty. We provide details of the fit quality and discuss stability tests that split the data for separate samples, comparing results. We find that the fits are consistent between split datasets. Results from the Baksan Experiment on Sterile Transitions (BEST)

The Baksan Experiment on Sterile Transitions (BEST) was designed to investigate the deficit of electron neutrinos 𝜈𝑒 observed in previous gallium-based radiochemical measurements with high-intensity neutrino sources, commonly referred to as the “gallium anomaly,” which could be interpreted as evidence for oscillations between 𝜈𝑒 and sterile neutrino (𝜈 𝑠 ) states. A 3.414-MCi 51 Cr 𝜈 𝑒 source was placed at the center of two nested Ga volumes and measurements were made of the production of 71 Ge through the charged current reaction, 71 Ga ⁢(𝜈 𝑒 ,𝑒 − ) ⁢71 Ge, at two average distances. The measured production rates for the inner and the outer targets, respectively, are [54.9$^{+2.5}_{−2.4}$⁢(stat) ± 1.4⁢(syst)] and [55.6$^{+2.7}_{−2.6}$⁢(stat) ± 1.4⁢(syst)] atoms of 71 Ge/𝑑. The ratio (𝑅) of the measured rate of 71 Ge production at each distance to the expected rate from the known cross section and experimental efficiencies are 𝑅 in = 0.79 ± 0.05 and 𝑅 out = 0.77 ± 0.05. The ratio of the outer to the inner result is 0.97 ± 0.07, which is consistent with unity within uncertainty. The rates at each distance were found to be similar, but 20%–24% lower than expected, thus reaffirming the anomaly. Furthermore, these results are consistent with 𝜈 𝑒 → 𝜈 𝑠 oscillations with a relatively large Δ⁢𝑚 2 (>0.5 eV 2 ) and mixing sin 2 ⁡2⁢𝜃 (≈ 0.4).

Enhanced active-sterile neutrino polarizability at the intensity frontier

Electromagnetic probes of neutrinos can provide insights into physics beyond the Standard Model. Among the possible electromagnetic interactions of neutrinos is neutrino polarizability, a dimension-7 effective operator that couples two neutrinos to two photons. In this manuscript, we study a realization of the neutrino polarizability operator in which one of the active neutrinos is replaced by a sterile neutrino. We derive new constraints on this active-sterile neutrino polarizability from its contribution to neutrino-nucleus scattering with a single photon in the final state at neutrino experiments. We show that a realization of this operator via a light mediator can explain the MiniBooNE low-energy excess while remaining consistent with other experimental constraints. Finally, we comment on additional model realizations of this higher-dimensional operator.

Sterile Neutrinos: Are They Real?

Neutrinos are perhaps the least understood of the known denizens of the subatomic world. They have nearly no mass, interact only via the weak nuclear force and gravity, and, perhaps most surprising, the three known species of neutrinos can transform from one variant into another. This transformation, called neutrino oscillation, has been demonstrated only relatively recently and has led to speculation that there might be another, even more mysterious, neutrino variant, called the sterile neutrino. While the sterile neutrino remains a hypothetical particle, it is an interesting one and searches for it are a key research focus of the world’s neutrino scientist community.

Statistical interpretation of sterile neutrino oscillation searches at reactors

A considerable experimental effort is currently under way to test the persistent hints for oscillations due to an eV-scale sterile neutrino in the data of various reactor neutrino experiments. The assessment of the statistical significance of these hints is usually based on Wilks’ theorem, whereby the assumption is made that the log-likelihood is χ 2 -distributed. However, it is well known that the preconditions for the validity of Wilks’ theorem are not fulfilled for neutrino oscillation experiments. In this work we derive a simple asymptotic form of the actual distribution of the log-likelihood based on reinterpreting the problem as fitting white Gaussian noise. From this formalism we show that, even in the absence of a sterile neutrino, the expectation value for the maximum likelihood estimate of the mixing angle remains non-zero with attendant large values of the log-likelihood. Our analytical results are then confirmed by numerical simulations of a toy reactor experiment. Finally, we apply this framework to the data of the Neutrino-4 experiment and show that the null hypothesis of no-oscillation is rejected at the 2.6 σ level, compared to 3.2 σ obtained under the assumption that Wilks’ theorem applies.

Sterile neutrinos, black hole vacuum and holographic principle

We construct an effective field theory (EFT) model that describes matter field interactions with Schwarzschild mini-black-holes (SBH’s), treated as a scalar field, B 0 (x). Fermion interactions with SBH’s require a complex spurion field, θ ij , which we interpret as the EFT description of “holographic information,” which is correlated with the SBH as a composite system. We consider Hawking’s virtual black hole vacuum (VBH) as a Higgs phase, $\langle$B 0 $\rangle$=V. Integrating sterile neutrino loops, the information field θij is promoted to a dynamical field, necessarily developing a tachyonic instability and acquiring a VEV of order the Planck scale. For N sterile neutrinos this breaks the vacuum to SU(N) × U(1)/SO(N) with N degenerate Majorana masses, and 12N(N+1) Nambu-Goldstone neutrino-Majorons. The model suggests many scalars fields, corresponding to all fermion bilinears, may exist bound nonperturbatively by gravity.

A package for renormalization group running in the SMEFT with sterile neutrinos

Abstract Sterile neutrinos are well-motivated beyond the Standard Model (BSM) particles. The Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) augmented with these new fields is known as the $$\nu $$ ν SMEFT. We present the first code for solving the renormalization group equations (RGEs) of the $$\nu $$ ν SMEFT in an automated way. For this purpose, we have implemented the $$\nu $$ ν SMEFT as a new effective field theory (EFT) in the Wilson coefficient exchange format . Furthermore, we included anomalous dimensions depending on the gauge couplings and Yukawas in the python package . This novel version of allows a consistent inclusion of $$\nu $$ ν SMEFT renormalization group (RG) running effects above the electroweak (EW) scale in phenomenological studies involving sterile neutrinos. Moreover, this new release allows us to study EW, strong, and Yukawa running effects separately within the SMEFT.

Improved Joint FHC+RHC Sterile Analysis with Nu-on-E Sample

The NOvA experiment measures neutrino oscillations in a nearly pure muon neutrino beam. The neutral current (NC) and the muon neutrino charged current (CC) interaction disappearance are studied to search for active-to-sterile neutrino oscillations. NOvA consists of two functionally identical detectors placed 14 mrad off-axis of Fermilab's NuMI beamline. The Near Detector (ND) is located 100 m underground on-site at Fermilab, while the Far Detector (FD) sits on the surface 810 km away at Ash River, Minnesota. The NuMI beam is capable of running in forward or reverse horn current modes, creating a predominantly neutrino or antineutrino beam, respectively. For this analysis, a simultaneous near and far detector joint fit approach was utilized. Systematic uncertainties constrain the ND while the statistical uncertainties constrain the FD. For the upcoming analysis, we plan on including a dedicated neutrino-on-electron elastic scattering sample. This interaction is advantageous as it is subject to minimal cross-section uncertainties, which will help reduce degeneracies between other uncertainty categories. This thesis presents the sterile neutrino oscillation sensitivity results using 27.2e+20 POT in FHC mode, 12.6e+20 in RHC mode.

Probing BSM Oscillatory Signals with the DUNE Detectors and the LBNF Neutrino Beam: NSI and Sterile Neutrino Sensitivities

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is a flagship long-baseline accelerator neutrino experiment under construction in the U.S. With a 1,300 km distance between its Near Detector (ND) and Far Detector (FD), the world’s most intense LBNF (Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility) neutrino beam, and high-resolution LArTPC (Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber) detectors, DUNE will measure the neutrino oscillation parameters with unprecedented precision. In addition to the determination of the neutrino mass ordering and the potential discovery of Charge-Parity violation in the leptonic sector, DUNE's capabilities present a unique opportunity for probing Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics signals with neutrinos. Examples of BSM physics manifestations include the presence of Non-Standard Interactions (NSI) of neutrinos with matter, or the existence of sterile neutrinos that mix with 3-Flavor neutrinos. In this study, we present a joint ND+FD fit to simulated data assessing DUNE's sensitivity to probing neutrino NSI, as well as scenarios including sterile neutrino mixing.

Developing New Beam Constraints to Improve Sterile Neutrino Searches at NOvA

NOvA is a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment utilizing two functionally identical liquid scintillator detectors located 14 mrad off-axis from the NuMI beam at Fermilab. The position of the Near Detector (ND), 1 km from the neutrino production target, means it sees a range of off-axis angles (12.6-17.2 mrad), resulting in a noticeable energy gradient across the detector face. In addition, the neutrino production points vary widely along the decay pipe, which leads to a distribution of true neutrino baselines (L), and limits the sensitivity of our current sterile neutrino searches. This work presents a new "baseline reconstruction" technique designed to exploit our off-axis position to triangulate the precise origin of neutrinos within the NuMI beamline. By projecting the total momentum vector of Charged Current (CC) and Neutral Current (NC) interactions back to the central beam axis, we estimate the individual baseline for each event. We describe the technique, evaluate its performance, and demonstrate how this can improve the sensitivity of future searches for sterile neutrinos through reduced flux systematic uncertainties and improved L/E resolution.

Sterile Neutrino Search with the NOvA Detectors

NOvA is a two-detector experiment designed to observe neutrino oscillations from νµ toνe flavor states. Additionally, the location of the NOvA Near Detector is well situated to additionally observe short base line oscillations to sterile neutrino states. We expand upon previous NOvA sterile neutrino searches by using a covariance matrix fitting technique. This analysis is the first with NOvA to directly include neutrino interactions in the Near Detector while fitting the data. The NOvA Near Detector’s greater statistics to better constrain our Far Detector uncertainties in addition to increasing the range of Δ m$^2_{41}$ to which we are sensitive.

Constraining Systematics for Future Sterile Neutrino Analysis at NOvA Experiment

In this article, we report an approach used to constrain the impact of cross-section systematic parameters in the future sterile neutrino analysis at the NOvA experiment. NOvA is a long-baseline neutrino experiment built to investigate the intricate properties of neutrinos, with the principal emphasis on active three-flavor neutrino mixing phenomena. Besides that, NOvA also explores exotic oscillations, including sterile neutrino search. Uncertainties on the neutrino flux, cross-section, and detector systematic parameters significantly contribute, complicating the disentanglement of genuine physics events from background noise. We present the impact of systematic reduction via near detector neutral current sample splitting and its implications on oscillation parameters, leveraging results primarily from Monte Carlo simulations.

This dissertation presents a search for sterile neutrinos using Monte Carlo datasets and experimental data from the NOνA experiment. This work introduces novel machine learning techniques for energy reconstruction in neutral current events. A deep learning-based energy estimator was developed and integrated into the analysis framework. Using this new energy estimator, the sensitivity to sterile neutrino-induced oscillations is evaluated and presented. Furthermore, the dissertation explores potential methods for further improvement of the analysis.
