Software for Start-Ups: Introducing the NASA in Silicon Valley

Ames is in the unique position to cater to tech companies and start-ups in California's Silicon Valley. The majority of Ames' technology transfer is software, which is very attractive to newly developing companies in the Valley as they create their business plans and develop their technology portfolio structures. Ames is collaborating with several "accelerators", "incubators" and academic technology transfer programs to connect start-ups with the space agency's technologies and software. The ultimate goal is to enable successful businesses by harnessing the unique resources of the Silicon Valley entrepreneurial ecosystem, AND beyond! Note: All info is in the public domain.

Plant Phenology Evaluation of CRESCENDO Land Surface Models–Part 1: Start and End of the Growing Season

Plant phenology plays a fundamental role in land–atmosphere interactions, and its variability and variations are an indicator of climate and environmental changes. For this reason, current land surface models include phenology parameterizations and related biophysical and biogeochemical processes. In this work, the climatology of the beginning and end of the growing season, simulated by the land component of seven state-of-the-art European Earth system models participating in the CMIP6, is evaluated globally against satellite observations. The assessment is performed using the vegetation metric leaf area index and a recently developed approach, named four growing season types. On average, the land surface models show a 0.6-month delay in the growing season start, while they are about 0.5 months earlier in the growing season end. The difference with observation tends to be higher in the Southern Hemisphere compared to the Northern Hemisphere. High agreement between land surface models and observations is exhibited in areas dominated by broadleaf deciduous trees, while high variability is noted in regions dominated by broadleaf deciduous shrubs. Generally, the timing of the growing season end is accurately simulated in about 25 % of global land grid points versus 16 % in the timing of growing season start. The refinement of phenology parameterization can lead to better representation of vegetation-related energy, water, and carbon cycles in land surface models, but plant phenology is also affected by plant physiology and soil hydrology processes. Consequently, phenology representation and, in general, vegetation modelling is a complex task, which still needs further improvement, evaluation, and multi-model comparison.

The Importance of Workplace Book Clubs to Start Idea Discussions and Changing Workplace Culture

Many of the ideas presented at this workshop will focus on larger initiatives for addressing IDEA; here we present a more focused effort to start discussions about IDEA, including changing workplace culture – a book club. A book club can be implemented at any size institute, department, or university with minimal resources. While this is not meant to replace any larger initiatives that are desperately needed, this is a way to start discussions within an organization to both change culture, build relationships and camaraderie among the participants, and increase management’s awareness of different direct approaches to addressing diversity and inclusion. It also has the advantage of being detached from the lived day-to-day experience at the organization and therefore provides a more neutral ground to think about and become aware of topics that might raise a plethora of uncomfortable feelings in those discussing them. There are different approaches to implementing a book club depending on the specific goals or needs of an organization – these can include who participates (such as management versus departments or sections versus colleagues outside your organization), the types of books or journal articles chosen, the schedule, and whether it is optional vs. required, among others. Here we discuss some of the approaches we have implemented at our institutions in setting up diversity-focused book clubs, including some lessons learned. We will specifically use a manager’s book club and an employee driven book club (called UnBinding Bias) as two detailed examples. Finally, we end with lessons learned from our experiences.

Bearing Starting Torque Measurements Down to –100°C

Starting torque was measured for three different bearings from 0°C down to 90°C and 100°C. These are bearings of the type that will be used in the ice-penetrating radar instrument named Radar for Europa Assessment and Sounding: Ocean to Near-surface (REASON), which is part of the planned science instrument suite for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Europa Clipper mission. This space science mission to Jupiter’s moon, Europa, is being led by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), which is administered for NASA by the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). In addition to presenting the starting torque measurements at various temperatures, this paper will describe the small test chamber and attachments that allowed the measurements to be made using an existing bearing torque testing machine.

Electrodeless discharge lamp is easily started, has high stability

Electrodeless discharge borosilicate glass lamp is used in various high-resolution optical systems. It is partially charged with krypton, contains small amounts of rubidium, and is enclosed in a hermetically sealed envelope that maintains the lamp at an optimum temperature during discharge. The lamp is quickly started by its excitation coil.

Electric arc heater is self starting

Remote method initiates an electric arc over a large range of gaps between two water-cooled electrodes of an arc-heated wind tunnel without disassembling the arc unit. This type of starting system can be used on both three-phase ac arc heaters and dc arc heaters.

Power arc welder touch-started with consumable electrode

Power arc welder formed as a hand-held welding gun touch-starts, retracts a consumable electrode to create the desired arc, and then commences feeding of the consumable electrode at the rate required to form the intended bead or spot. This device achieves uniform spot welds repeatedly.
