NO, NO2. NOx measurements; SGP GIF; April 2022

This file contains measurements of nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and nitrogen oxides (NOx = NO + NO1). Measurements were made using a Teledyne NO-NOx Analyzer Model T200UP. Zeros were conducted daily and calibrations were completed at the end of the campaign. The instrument was located at the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Southern Great Plains Guest Instrumentation Facility and measured from April 9, 2022 to May 6, 2022. The file is in ICARTT format.

Sulfuric Acid Measurements, SGP GIF, May 2023

This dataset contains measurements of gas-phase sulfuric acid (H2SO4) at 5 minute time resolution. Sulfuric acid was measured using a nitrate chemical ionization mass spectrometer at the ARM Southern Great Plains Guest Instrumentation Facility.

Positive and Negative Ion CIMS Measurements, SGP, May-June 2024

The negative ion measurements were taken using two LTOF-CIMS with two different nitrate inlets. The data labeled Aerodyne_Inlet used an Aerodyne nitrate inlet. Data labeled PCC used a custom transverse inlet. The positive ion measurements were taken using one LTOF-CIMS with hydronium as an ionization reagent using a custom transverse inlet with an inlet voltage difference of 700 V. See https://doi.org/10.1021/acs.jpca.2c01672 for more information. Peaks were autofit using tofware. Positive ion data is published in the form of peak signal/reagent signal. Data files of peak signal/reagent signal for the two mass spectrometers for the negative ion measurements are separate. Concentrations of H2SO4 are combined into one file. When measurements were overlapping, measurements from the Aerodyne nitrate inlet were used.

Medium-Chain Chlorinated Paraffins Measurements, SGP GIF, May 2023

This dataset contains measurements of medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (MCCPs) at 5-minute time resolution. The 6 most abundant ones are reported as well as the sum of all MCCPs measured. MCCPs were measured using a nitrate chemical ionization mass spectrometer at the ARM Southern Great Plains Guest Instrumentation Facility. Reported concentrations represent lower limit concentrations.

Comparison of Shortwave Cloud Radiative Forcing Derived from ARM SGP Surface and GOES-8 Satellite Measurements During ARESE I and ARESE II

One of the objectives of the ARM Enhanced Shortwave Experiment (ARESE) is to investigate the absorption of solar radiation by clouds over the ARM Southern Great Plains central facility. A variety of techniques employing various combinations Of Surface, aircraft, and satellite data have been used to estimate the absorption empirically. During ARESE-I conducted during fall 1995, conflicting results were produced from different analyses of the combined datasets leading to the need for a more controlled experiment. ARESE-II was conducted during spring 2000. Improved calibrations, different sampling strategies, and broadband satellite data were all available to minimize some of the sources of uncertainty in the data. In this paper, cloud absorption or its parametric surrogates (e.g., Cess et al. 1995) are derived from collocated and coincident surface and satellite radiometer data from both ARESE-I and ARESE-II using the latest satellite and surface instrument calibrations.

Raman Lidar Water Vapor Measurements at the DOE SGP CART Site

The NASA/GSFC Scanning Raman Lidar (SRL) was deployed to the Department of Energy's (DOE) Cloud and Radiation Testbed site in northern Oklahoma September - December, 2000 for two DOE sponsored field campaigns: 1) the Water Vapor Intensive Operations Experiment 2000 and 2) the Atmospheric Radiations Measurement First International Satellite Cloud Climatology Experiment Experiment (AFWEX). WvIOP2000 focussed on water vapor measurements in the lower troposphere while AFWEX focussed on upper tropospheric water vapor. For the first time ever, four water vapor lidars were operated simultaneously: one airborne and three ground-based systems. Intercomparisons of these measurements and others will be presented at the meeting.

Spatial Variation of Surface Moisture Fluxes in SGP

Analysis of aircraft data in "spatial variations of surface moisture flux from aircraft data" indicates that the impact of small-scale surface heterogeneity on the spatial variation of surface moisture fluxes into the atmosphere is reduced by horizontal mixing. This mixing generally increases with the development of the daytime convective mixed layer, thus reducing the relative influence of surface heterogeneity on the spatial variation of moisture fluxes.

Validation of Infrared Azimuthal Model as Applied to GOES Data Over the ARM SGP

The goal of this research is to identify and reduce the GOES-8 IR temperature biases, induced by a fixed geostationary position, during the course of a day. In this study, the same CERES LW window channel model is applied to GOES-8 IR temperatures during clear days over the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement-Southern Great Plains Central Facility (SCF). The model-adjusted and observed IR temperatures are compared with topof- the-atmosphere (TOA) estimated temperatures derived from a radiative transfer algorithm based on the atmospheric profile and surface radiometer measurements. This algorithm can then be incorporated to derive more accurate Ts from real-time satellite operational products.

Observational Evidence of Changes in Water Vapor, Clouds, and Radiation at the ARM SGP Site

Characterizing water vapor and cloud effects on the surface radiation budget is critical for understanding the current climate because water vapor is the most important greenhouse gas in the atmosphere and clouds are one of the largest sources of uncertainty in predicting potential future climate change. Several studies have shown that insolation over land declined until 1990 then increased until the present. Using 8 years of surface data, we observed the increasing trend of insolation from 1997 to 2000, but detected a significant decrease from 2001 to 2004. The variation of cloud fraction mirrors that of insolation with an overall increase of 1 percent per year. Under clear-sky conditions, water vapor changes have a greater impact on longwave flux than on insolation.
