Neutron diffraction probing hydrogen in monoclinic H 2 VOPO 4

Light hydrogen atoms are resolvable with neutrons; however, the massive incoherent background inhibits the diffraction quality. To improve the signal, isotope treatment by deuteration becomes a prerequisite for a successful crystallographic understanding of hydrogen-containing materials by neutron diffraction. Thanks to the low-background and high-resolution time-of-flight neutron diffractometer, this work demonstrates a direct and successful measurement of high-quality neutron diffraction patterns of H 2 VOPO 4 powders, a precursor of a high-capacity alkali-ion battery cathode. The Rietveld refinement identifies the hydrogen coordinates, occupancy, and thermal parameters in the H 2 VOPO 4 lattice. Finally, the result highlights the unique capability of neutron diffraction for the structure characterization of hydrogen-containing materials, potentially without requiring costly and possibly artifact-inducing deuteration for neutron diffraction.

Structural, magnetic, optical, dielectric and electronic properties of R 2 NiIrO 6 (R = Pr and Nd): A comprehensive experimental and theoretical investigation

Double perovskites are highly promising materials capable of exhibiting a wide variety of phenomena. In this work, we perform a comprehensive experimental and theoretical study of polycrystalline R 2 NiIrO 6 (R = Pr and Nd) compounds. Both compounds were synthesised using the solid-state reaction method. Rietveld refinement confirmed a monoclinic structure with the P2 1 /n space group for both compounds. The scanning electron images showed the average grain sizes of 0.55 μm for R = Pr and 0.46 μm for R = Nd. Fourier transform infrared ra- diation spectra of the two compounds presented two intense bands at 470 cm -1 and 540 cm -1 . The optical measurements revealed that the band gaps of the compounds were in the visible absorption range. The field- cooled magnetisation - field hysteresis measurements indicated exchange bias properties in the synthesised compounds at low temperatures. Both temperature and frequency variation of dielectric constant and loss tangent measurements were conducted. The frequency-dependent ac conductivity measurements indicated that the conductivity increases with the increase of frequency as well as temperature. The Nd 2 NiIrO 6 compound showed lower ac conductivities compared to its isostructural Pr 2 NiIrO 6 compound. The atomic and electronic structures of Nd 2 NiIrO 6 and Pr 2 NiIrO 6 were explored using the spin-polarised calculations performed within the DFT+U method. Our results suggested that the inclusion of on-site correlations and repulsions for the d-states of atoms was necessary in order to obtain finite band gaps of Nd 2 NiIrO 6 and Pr 2 NiIrO 6 systems.

High temperature neutron diffraction investigation of U 3 Si 2

The U-Si system is actively undergoing studies due to its promise as a component of an accident tolerant nuclear fuel. In this work, the crystal structure of the U 3 Si 2 compound in the U-Si system was investigated as a function of temperature from room temperature to 1298 K for a sample of approximately 42.02 at.% Si composition and 1373 K for a sample with approximately 42.10 at.% Si using high temperature time-of-flight neutron diffraction on the High-Pressure Preferred Orientation (HIPPO) diffractometer at Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE). The simultaneous Rietveld refinement of five histograms from the five HIPPO detector backs (40°, 60°, 90°, 120°, and 145°) provided datasets for the lattice parameters, anisotropic atomic displacement parameters, and atomic positions as a function of temperature. To explore the possibility of a homogeneity range, two sample compositions were analyzed, a 40.02 at.% Si (near stoichiometric) and a potentially hyperstoichiometric (40.10 at.% Si) sample. While minor differences in the anisotropic atomic displacement parameters between the two samples were observed, over the entire investigated temperature range no additional phases were found indicative of a single phase sample and the ability of the U 3 Si 2 compound to accommodate nonstoichiometry, suggesting that the U 3 Si 2 compound is not a line compound confirming previous determinations. However, the differences observed in the average coefficient of linear thermal expansion identified between the two compositions warrant future investigation.

Anion and cation co-doping of Na 4 SnS 4 as sodium superionic conductors

Na based all-solid-state batteries are one of the most promising candidates for large-scale electrochemical energy storage owing to their low cost and outstanding safety properties. The key enabler of this technology is solid electrolyte with sufficiently high ionic conductivity at room temperature. In this work, the design, synthesis, characterization and testing of a series of novel fast Na-ion conductors, Na 4-x-y Sn 1-x A x S 4-y X y with aliovalent cation (P 5+ /Sb 5+ ) and anion substitutions (Cl - /Br - ) of the parent compound Na 4 SnS 4 are reported. The doped samples crystalize in a new phase with space group I4 1 /acd and show ionic conductivities that are one to four orders of magnitude higher than that of undoped Na 4 SnS 4 . R. t. conductivity of 0.64 mS cm -1 is achieved in Na 3.7 Sn 0.8 Sb 0.2 S 3.9 Cl 0.1 with a low activation energy of 0.26 eV. Furthermore, Rietveld refinement against high resolution synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data reveals that the distribution of the doping ions and the resulted Na vacancies are underlying cause of the enhanced conductivity.

Evaluation of the critical behavior near ferromagnetic to paramagnetic phase transition in CrTe 1-x Se x alloys: An experimental study

For this study, we used the conventional solid-state reaction method to prepare stoichiometric samples of CrTe 1-x Se x , where 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.10, and investigated the structural and critical behavior of the prepared samples. Room temperature powder X-ray diffraction, along with Rietveld refinement, revealed the emergence of the NiAs structure with P6 3 /mmc (194) space group with increasing Se substitution. The high-temperature linear fit to inverse of the dc-susceptibility versus temperature for the mother sample resulted in an effective moment of 3.65μ B Cr with Curie-Weiss temperature near 335K, which is slightly higher than the Tc of ~332K obtained from the inflection point of magnetization versus temperature. Magnetization isotherms were employed to investigate the critical behavior of ferromagnetic CrTe 1-x Se x with 0.0 ≤ x ≤ 0.10 near their Curie temperatures (Tc). The magnetic behavior near Tc was found to follow 3D mean-field critical exponents with a second-order phase transition in all samples investigated. We fine-tuned the critical exponents (β, γ, and δ) using a combination of an iteration technique, the Kouvel-Fisher method, and modified Arrott plots. All samples follow a mean field behavior, with Tc ranging from 298 to 340K. The acquired values exhibit self-consistency, as indicated by the results from the Widom scaling relation. Furthermore, the magnetization isotherms exhibit a universal scaling behavior, providing additional credence to the calculated critical exponents.

Synthesis and characterization of Pt(Cu 0.67 Sn 0.33 )

Pt(Cu 0.67 Sn 0.33 ) has recently been found in a natural sample. In order to be able to characterize this new ternary compound, we synthesized it from the elements. Samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, thermal relaxation calorimetry, and scanning electron microscopy studies. Density functional theory-based model calculations complemented the experimental studies. Pt(Cu 0.67 Sn 0.33 )was already formed at a relatively low temperature of 773 K. Rietveld refinement of Pt(Cu 0.67 Sn 0.33 ) has been carried out in CuAu-type or L1 0 -type structure, space group P4/mmm, with Pt on 0,0,0 and disordered Cu and Sn on 1/2, 1/2, 1/2 and Z = 1. The lattice parameters are a = 2.823(1) Å, c = 3.64(1) Å, and V = 29.00(4) Å which are in good agreement with values obtained earlier on the natural sample and with the results of DFT calculations. The vibrational entropy for Pt(Cu 0.67 Sn 0.33 ) is $S_{298.15}^{vib}$ = 79.9(7) J mol -1 K -1 . The pressure dependence up to 36(2) GPa of the unit-cell volume and the lattice parameters and unit-cell volume have been obtained by synchrotron based powder diffraction using a diamond anvil cell. A fit of a 3rd-order Birch–Murnaghan equation of state to the Pt(Cu 0.67 Sn 0.33 )) (p,V)-data results in a bulk modulus of B 0 = 215(27) GPa and B' = 5(2).

Ambient pressure synthesis and characterization of layered honeycomb Li 2 PdO 3

Single-phase polycrystalline Li 2 PdO 3 has been synthesized at 640°C in oxygen for the first time under ambient pressure. X-ray and neutron diffraction analyses show that the sample possesses a monoclinic layered structure belonging to the C2/m space group. Rietveld refinements of neutron powder diffraction data indicate ~10% Li–Pd site exchange and DIFFaX modelling manifest ~2% stacking faults present within LiPd 2 layers. A band gap of ~2.23 eV was calculated for the golden Li 2 PdO 3 using absorbance measurements. Thermogravimetric analysis of the sample shows that Li 2 PdO 3 is stable up to 730°C under oxygen. Here a Curie tail is observed at low temperature magnetic measurements (T < 50K), yielding an effective moment of 0.038 μ B , possibly due to spin ½ impurities.

Type-II superconductivity at 9K in Pb–Bi alloy

In the present work, we report the synthesis of Pb–Bi alloy with enhanced Tc of up to 9K, which is higher than that of Pb. The alloy is synthesized via a solid-state reaction route in the vacuum-encapsulated quartz tube at 700°C in an automated furnace. The synthesized sample is characterized by X-ray Diffraction(XRD) and Energy dispersive X-ray analysis(EDAX) for its phase purity and elemental composition. Rietveld refinement of XRD reveals that the end product is a majority hexagonal Pb 7 Bi 3 , with minor rhombohedral Bi. The electronic transport measurement shows metallic behavior with the Debye temperature of 108K and a superconductivity transition temperature (T c ) below 9K, which is the maximum to date for any reported Pb–Bi alloy, Pb or Bi at ambient pressure. Partial substitution of Bi at the Pb site may modify the free density of electronic states within the BCS model to attain the optimum T c , which is higher by around 2K from the reported T c of Pb. The superconductor phase diagram derived from magneto-transport measurements reveals that the synthesized alloy is a conventional superconductor with an upper critical field (H c2 ) of 3.9 T, which lies well within the Pauli paramagnetic limit. The magnetization measurements carried out following ZFC(Zero Field Cool) protocols infer that the synthesized alloy is a bulk superconductor below 9K. The isothermal M-H(Magnetization vs. Field) measurements performed below T c establish it as a type-II superconductor. Furthermore, the specific heat capacity measurements show that the Pb–Bi alloy is a strongly coupled bulk superconductor below around 9K with possibly two superconducting gaps.

Leveraging computational thermodynamics to guide SiC-ZrC chemical vapor deposition process development

Here using the CALPHAD approach to understand zirconium carbide deposition, a series of phase equilibria were calculated from a custom thermodynamic database based on a literature source, and the equilibria were used to explore the potential chemical vapor deposition (CVD) processing space in the ZrCl 4 -CH 3 SiCl 3 -CH 4 -H 2 system as a function of pressure, temperature, and gas composition. Several gas ratios were considered. At a given ZrCl 4 :CH 3 SiCl 3 ratio within the range studied, the most important factor was found to be the ratios of CH 4 :ZrCl 4 , wherein the nature of the composition – carbide vs. silicide – could be controlled. A pure binary composition of ZrC and SiC is expected to form by increasing the initial amount of methane and decreasing the amount of hydrogen from values predicted purely based on thermodynamic equilibrium. Rietveld analysis of the x-ray diffractograms from corresponding experimental depositions confirmed that increasing the CH 4 :ZrCl 4 ratio increased the fraction of carbon-containing species (SiC, ZrC) and decreased the fraction of non-carbides (ZrSi, ZrSi 2 , etc.), as predicted from the CALPHAD results.

Describing the Influence of Ball-milling on the Amorphization of Flubendazole Using the PDF and RMC Methods with X-ray Powder Diffraction Data

Flubendazole (FBZ) is a poorly water-soluble drug, and different methodologies have been proposed to improve its oral bioavailability. Obtaining the amorphous drug phase is an alternative to improve its water solubility. Several techniques for drug amorphization, such as spray drying, lyophilization, melt quenching, solvent-evaporation, and ball milling, can yield various types of structural disorder and possibly render variations in physicochemical properties. Herein, we focus on evaluating the influence of the ball-milling process on the amorphization of FBZ. The characterization of the average global and local structures before, during, and after the milling process is described by sequential Rietveld refinements, pair distribution function analysis, and the Reverse Monte Carlo method. In conclusion, we show that preserving the local structure (nearest molecules) can be responsible for avoiding the fast structure recrystallization commonly observed when using the solvent-evaporation process for the studied drug.

Powder X-ray diffraction of fluorometholone, C 22 H 29 FO 4

Commercial fluorometholone, CAS #426-13-1, crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P 2 1 (#4) with a = 6.40648(2), b = 13.43260(5), c = 11.00060(8) Å, β = 92.8203(5)°, V = 945.517(5) Å 3 , and Z = 2. A reduced cell search in the Cambridge Structural Database yielded one previous structure determination, using single-crystal data at 292 K. In this work, the sample was ordered from the United States Pharmacopeial Convention (Lot # R032K0) and analyzed as-received. The room temperature (295 K) crystal structure was refined using synchrotron ( λ = 0.412826 Å) powder diffraction data and optimized using density functional theory (DFT) techniques. Hydrogen positions were included as a part of the structure and were re-calculated during the refinement. The diffraction data were collected on beamline 11-BM at the Advanced Photon Source, Argonne National Laboratory, and the powder X-ray diffraction pattern of the compound has been submitted to ICDD® for inclusion in the Powder Diffraction File™. The agreement of the Rietveld-refined and DFT-optimized structures is excellent; the root-mean-square Cartesian displacement is 0.060 Å. In addition to the O–H⋯O hydrogen bonds observed by Park et al. (Park, Y. J., Lee, M. Y., and Cho, S. I. ( 1992 ). “Fluorometholone,” J. Korean Chem. Soc. 36 , 812–817), C–H⋯O hydrogen bonds contribute to the crystal energy.

Evaluating the pressure dependence of PZT structures using a virtual reality environment

Pb–Zr–Ti–O (PZT) perovskites span a large solid-solution range and have found widespread use due to their piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties that also span a large range. Crystal structure analysis via Rietveld refinement facilitates materials analysis via the extraction of the structural parameters. These parameters, often obtained as a function of an additional dimension (e.g., pressure), can help to diagnose materials response within a use environment. Often referred to as “ in-situ ” studies, these experiments provide an abundance of data. Viewing structural changes due to applied pressure conditions can give much-needed insight into materials performance. However, challenges exist for viewing/presenting results when the details are inherently three-dimensional (3D) in nature. For PZT perovskites, the use of polyhedra (e.g., Zr/Ti–O 6 octahedra) to view bonding/connectivity is beneficial; however, the visualization of the octahedra behavior with pressure dependence is less easily demonstrated due to the complexity of the added pressure dimension. We present a more intuitive visualization by projecting structural data into virtual reality (VR). We employ previously published structural data for Pb 0.99 (Zr 0.95 Ti 0.05 ) 0.98 Nb 0.02 O 3 as an exemplar for VR visualization of the PZT R3c crystal structure between ambient and 0.62 GPa pressure. This is accomplished via our in-house CAD2VR™ software platform and the new CrystalVR plugin. The use of the VR environment enables a more intuitive viewing experience, while enabling on-the-fly evaluation of crystal data, to form a detailed and comprehensive understanding of in-situ datasets. Discussion of methodology and tools for viewing are given, along with how recording results in video form can enable the viewing experience.

Crystal structure and synchrotron X-ray powder reference pattern for the porous pillared cyanonickelate, Ni(3-amino-4,4′-bipyridine)[Ni(CN) 4 ]

The structure of Ni(3-amino-4,4′-bipyridine)[Ni(CN) 4 ] (or known as Ni-BpyNH 2 ) in powder form was determined using synchrotron X-ray diffraction and refined using the Rietveld refinement technique (R = 8.8%). The orthorhombic (Cmca) cell parameters were determined to be a = 14.7218(3) Å, b = 22.6615(3) Å, c = 12.3833(3) Å, V = 4131.29(9) Å 3 , and Z = 8. Ni-BpyNH 2 forms a 3-D network, with a 2-D Ni(CN) 4 net connecting to each other via the BpyNH 2 ligands. Further, there are two independent Ni sites on the net. The 2-D nets are connected to each other via the bonding of the pyridine “N” atom to Ni2. The Ni2 site is of six-fold coordination to N with relatively long Ni2–N distances (average of 2.118 Å) as compared to the four-fold coordinated Ni1–C distances (average of 1.850 Å). The Ni(CN) 4 net is arranged in a wave-like fashion. The functional group, –NH 2 , is disordered and was found to be in the m-position relative to the N atom of the pyridine ring. Instead of having a unique position, N has ¼ site occupancy in each of the four m-positions. The powder reference diffraction pattern for Ni-BpyNH 2 was prepared and submitted to the Powder Diffraction File (PDF) at the International Centre of Diffraction Data (ICDD).

Enumeration as a Tool for Structure Solution: A Materials Genomic Approach to Solving the Cation-Ordered Structure of Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 2 F 3

While powder diffraction methods are routinely utilized to optimize structural models for compounds whose crystal structures are known, the determination of unknown structures is far more challenging. When the unknown structure is large, structure solution can become a virtually intractable problem using standard structure solution methodologies, especially when the space group cannot be unambiguously resolved. One such system is the promising Na-ion battery cathode material Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 2 F 3 whose high temperature and room temperature structures were previously solved, but whose more complex low-temperature structure could not be determined. Here, a novel materials genomic approach is demonstrated for the solution of the unknown 100 K structure of Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 2 F 3 in which enumeration methods are first used to generate a large number (~3,000) of trial structures based on plausible orderings of Na ions and then automated Rietveld refinements are carried out to optimize each of these trial structures. Based on both the analysis of the ensemble of optimized trial structures and the density functional theory energy minimization of selected trial structures, the 100 K structure of Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 2 F 3 is best described as belonging to the space group A2 1 am with unit cell dimensions of a = 9.01928(4), b = 27.1379(1), c = 10.73307(5). The 100 K unit cell has a large volume of 2627.07(2) Å 3 with Z = 12 and 33 independent crystallographic sites (9 Na, 3 V, 3 P, 12 O, and 6 F) that is 3x and 6x larger than the room- and high-temperature polymorphs of this phase, respectively. Finally, the novel methods described here will be generally applicable for the solution of the complex cation-ordered structures that commonly occur for battery materials.

Further Investigations of Racemic and Chiral Molecular Sieves of the STW Topology

Large single crystals of pure-silica STW-type molecular sieves are prepared using 1,2,3,4,5-pentamethylimidazolium (12345PMI) and 2-ethyl-1,3,4-trimethylimidazolium (2E134TMI) as organic structure-directing agents (OSDAs) and α-amino acid additives. The effects of the amount and type of amino acid on the crystallization of pure-silica STW materials are investigated. Room-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffractometry shows that 12345PMI better fits the STW cage than 2E134TMI and is fully consistent with computed simulations. The synthesis of an enantioenriched R-STW-type molecular sieve having a Si/Ge ratio of 2.2 is achieved using a chiral, dicationic OSDA that contains two stereocenters. Furthermore, the conformation of the chiral OSDA in the chiral framework has been obtained from a Rietveld refinement using synchrotron powder diffraction data and is the first structure refinement of an enantioenriched, inorganic molecular sieve prepared from a pure, asymmetric OSDA.

Complex Structural Disorder in a Polar Orthorhombic Perovskite Observed through the Maximum Entropy Method/Rietveld Technique

Ambient pressure stable perovskite oxides with all Bi3+ on the A-site are rare, with only four examples known. Due to the lone pair on Bi 3+ , these materials are seen as the best alternative to Pb-based piezoelectrics, which are used widely in society. The industry standard piezoelectric, Pb (Zr 1 – x Ti x )O 3 , relies on the [001] polarization of PbTiO 3 , but there are currently no ambient pressure stable Bi-based perovskites with this polarization vector, preventing the creation of an analogous system. We present the full structural analysis of the orthorhombic phase of (1 – x)Bi (Ti 3/8 Fe 2/8 Mg 3/8 )O 3 – x CaTiO 3 , which crystallizes in Pna2 1 symmetry with [001] polarization. This symmetry is rare and has only been reported twice for perovskites at ambient conditions. Analysis of maximum entropy method (MEM) models using synchrotron radiation powder X-ray diffraction reveals a disordered A-site configuration, and the MEM/Rietveld technique generates a structural model of this extreme disorder. Combined Rietveld analysis of X-ray and neutron diffraction data yields an accurate description of the local A-site configuration, which we use to understand our dielectric, ferroelectric, and piezoelectric measurements. These results give insight into how to stabilize this unique symmetry and inspire new design principles for Bi-based piezoelectrics.

Method to Determine the Distribution of Substituted or Intercalated Ions in Transition-Metal Dichalcogenides: Fe x VSe 2 and Fe 1– x V x Se 2

Multiple techniques are combined to determine the amount of intercalation and/or substitution in transition-metal dichalcogenides. Kiessig fringes in the X-ray reflectivity pattern are used to calculate thickness. Laue oscillations in the specular diffraction pattern of the crystallographically aligned samples determine the number of unit cells in the coherently diffracting domains. The amount of impurity phase(s) is estimated by the difference between the thickness of the films and the size of the domains. If the difference is small relative to the total film thickness, the composition of the crystalline phase can be determined from X-ray fluorescence measurements. The number of unit cells possible can be calculated from the amount of each element determined by X-ray fluorescence measurements using in-plane lattice parameters, and the amount of the anion should agree with the number of unit cells determined from the Laue oscillations. The total amount of the metal relative to that required for the number of unit cells from the Laue oscillations provides a direct determination of the relative amount of intercalation and/or substitution in the crystalline dichalcogenide. So the utility of this approach is illustrated in Fe x V 1–y Se 2 samples. The relative amount of intercalation versus substitution was determined independently using electron microscopy and Rietveld refinement of diffraction patterns and is consistent with this new approach.

Probing Phosphorus Solubility and Its Effect on Critical Temperature ( T c ) in the Helical Superconducting Magnet RbEuFe 4 As 4– x P x

RbEuFe 4 As 4 exhibits a rare combination of high-temperature superconductivity and noncollinear magnetism, originating from the FeAs and Eu layers, respectively. In order to fine-tune its superconducting and magnetic properties, we studied P-doped RbEuFe 4 As 4–x P x . To determine the value of x for which RbEuFe 4 As 4–x P x exists, members of the series have been synthesized in the form of relatively large-sized single crystals by a high-temperature flux growth technique using RbAs flux as well as polycrystalline powder by direct combination reactions between RbFe 2 As 2 and EuFe 2 As 2–x P x . The flux crystal growth reactions indicate that RbEuFe 4 As 4–x P x forms with the values of x ≤ 0.12, which is corroborated by the Rietveld refinement analysis on the products obtained from direct combination reactions. The solubility limit exists primarily due to the preferential site As(2) occupation by P in the RbEuFe 4 As 4 crystal structure. Finally, as x increases in RbEuFe 4 As 4–x P x , magnetization measurements reveal that the superconducting critical transition temperature (T c ) decreases, while the magnetic ordering temperature (T N ) remains almost unchanged in comparison to undoped RbEuFe 4 As 4 .
