Exploratory wind-tunnel investigation of the effect of the main rotor wake on tail rotor noise

Approaches to minimizing the noise generated by the interaction of the tail rotor blades with the wake of the main rotor considered include repositioning of the tail rotor with respect to the main rotor, changes in the rotational direction of the tail rotor, and modification of the main rotor tip vortex. A variable geometry model was built which had the capability of varying tail rotor position relative to the main rotor as well as direction of tail rotor rotation. Acoustic data taken from the model in the Langley anechoic noise facility indicates interaction effects due to both main rotor shed vortex and the main rotor turbulence.

A tool for installation and removal of cylindrical baffles

Simple tool based on principle of automobile oil wrench slips over cylindrical thread-on baffle to install or remove it from baffle assembly. Tool consists of curled metal sheet brazed onto handgrip. Handgrip is adapted to be driven by wrench, ratchet, extension, torque wrench, or some other convenient tool. Clockwise twist of handgrip, tightens metal sheet around baffle to advance it into threaded joint. Counterclockwise twist loosens sheet for repositioning or tool removal.

Space transportation system options for extended duration and power

A modification kit for the Space Transportation System (STS) Orbiter is proposed to provide more power and mission duration for payloads. The power extension package (PEP) - a flexible-substrate solar array deployed on the Space Shuttle Orbiter remote manipulator system - can provide as much as 29 kW total power for durations of 10 to 48 days. The kit is installed only for those flights which require enhanced power or duration. Modifications to the Orbiter thermal control and life support systems to improve heat balance and to reduce consumables are proposed. The changes consist of repositioning the Orbiter forward radiators and replacing the lithium hydroxide scrubber with a regenerable solid amine.

The design and application of an antenna positioner mechanism for Intelsat-5 series communication satellite

In opertion, the East/West spot beam reflectors on the Intelsat-5 series communication satellite are required to satisfy initial precise-pointing to particular Earth locations; and repositioning and pointing to different Earth locations as traffic changes dictate during the seven year mission. Two 2 axis antenna positioner mechanisms (APM) are utilized in fulfilling these requirements. Each APM is comprised of three components which consist of one center pivot and two linear actuators rather than an integral two axis gimbal design. The step resolution of the APM can be adjusted as required with the present design, at a step resolution of 0.002865 degrees. The design philosophy and considerations, test program, and test results are discussed as well as some major problems encountered during the course of testing and their resolution.

ATS6-satellite radio beacon measurements at Ootacamund, India

In August 1975 the ATS6 was repositioned at 35 deg E. Radio beacon measurements of time delay, Faraday rotation and signal amplitude, made at Ootacamund, India in October 1975, are discussed with emphasis on the problem of determining the Faraday content under essentially transverse propagation conditions. It is shown that at the low geomagnetic latitude of Ootacamund the use of a fixed conversion coefficient gives an unreliable Faraday content. It is shown also that corrections to the measured Faraday rotation are important because of pitch and yaw of the satellite, particularly at night when the rotation on 140 MHz can be of the order of 10 to 20 deg. The shape factor shows a low predawn minimum indicating the nearly complete erosion of the F2 layer peak. Amplitude scintillation usually decreases with increase of radio frequency but exceptions are discussed.

Achievements of ATS-6 beacon experiment over Indian sub-continent

The repositioning of the ATS-6 satellite at 34 deg E enabled the scientific community of India to use the satellite's radio beacon for ionospheric studies. Two scientific projects were undertaken. The objective of the first project was to map ionospheric electron content, range rate errors, traveling ionospheric phenomena, solar flare effect, and magnetic phenomena. The second project was aimed at studying geophysical phenomena associated with the equatorial electrojet. The principal results of these studies are described.

Space Shuttle power extension package

A modification kit for the Space Transportation System (STS) Orbiter is proposed to provide more power and mission duration for payloads. The power extension package (PEP), a flexible-substrate solar array deployed on the Space Shuttle Orbiter remote manipulator system, can provide as much as 29 kW total power for durations of 10 to 48 days. The kit is installed only for those flights which require enhanced power or duration. The PEP is made possible by development of the flexible-substrate array technology and, in itself, contributes to the technology base for the use of large area solar cells. Modifications to the Orbiter thermal control and life support systems to improve heat balance and to reduce consumables are proposed. The changes consist of repositioning the Orbiter forward radiators and replacing the lithium hydroxide scrubber with a regenerable solid amine.

A new look at Togo through the eyes of a SLAR

Imaging of Togo in 1977 with SLAR provided the data required for the production of map controlled radar mosaics at a scale of 1:200,000 with 95 percent of all control points at that scale within + or - 4.0 millimeters of true positions. The moasics served as the base for the generation of a revised geologic map of Togo. Aided by two looks, numerous revisions resulted, not only with the addition of previously unknown structural features, a revision of age relationships, and the refinement of unit boundaries, but also with the repositioning of rock units and the reorientation of major faults.

Food packing optimization

The development of a universal closure lid for the space shuttle food package is reported. The revised lid needs a folded configuration which, when unfolded, fully conforms to the interior surfaces of the food cup. Experimental thermoform molds were fabricated and test lids formed. The lid material not in contact with the food conformed to the cup interior without wrinkles, permitting full nesting of the cups. The final lid design was established and thermoform tooling designed and fabricated. Lids formed on these molds were tested for strength. The heating elements were replaced and repositioned to eliminate any hot spots which may cause warpage.

Integrated propulsion for near-Earth space missions. Volume 2: Technical

The calculation approach is described for parametric analysis of candidate electric propulsion systems employed in LEO to GEO missions. Occultation relations, atmospheric density effects, and natural radiation effects are presented. A solar cell cover glass tradeoff is performed to determine optimum glass thickness. Solar array and spacecraft pointing strategies are described for low altitude flight and for optimum array illumination during ascent. Mass ratio tradeoffs versus transfer time provide direction for thruster technology improvements. Integrated electric propulsion analysis is performed for orbit boosting, inclination change, attitude control, stationkeeping, repositioning, and disposal functions as well as power sharing with payload on orbit. Comparison with chemical auxiliary propulsion is made to quantify the advantages of integrated propulsion in terms of weight savings and concomittant launch cost savings.

Adaptively pointing spaceborne radar for precipitation measurements

An auxiliary concept of adaptive pointing is presented as an aid to space-based measurements of precipitation using microwave radar. It is recommended that the instantaneous field of view (IFOV) be limited to cloudy regions of possible precipitation rather than scanning clear-sky areas of no interest. A microwave imager is proposed for scanning ahead of the satellite in order to identify areas of precipitation, and then an on-board antenna controller can reposition the scanning antenna to obtain reflectivities for use in rainfall-reflectivity relationships. The precursor beam could delineate the storm boundaries and determine points of peak intensity which can then be selectively sampled to find the rainfall rate distribution for the storm. The adaptive-beam system is suggested to be implementable using an IR sensor on-board geosynchronous satellites.

Shuttle ground turnaround and launch projections

An analysis of factors in the Turnaround Improvement Program intended is presented as a basis for launch rate projections. Noting that a second Shuttle processing facility is in preparation at Kennedy Space Center, details of the initial reprocessing phase, the refurbishing of the SRBs, which are jettisoned about 2 min after lift-off, are described. Until STS-7, Orbiter turnaround begins by configuring the vehicle for flight to KSC on board a 747. The Orbiter Processing Facility at KSC features two identical bays for unloading, inspection, repair, analysis, testing, and preparing for the succeeding flight. The SRBs are repositioned first, then the external tank, and then the Orbiter is fitted back in place. Parallel processing of two Orbiters will begin with STS-5 turnaround, and optimized times are expected to be achieved with the STS-30 flight, with significant test reduction coming with STS-14.

Interactive aircraft flight control and aeroelastic stabilization

An analytical model has been used to study the problem of integrated control system/structural dynamic design. This model utilizes the traditional typical section lifting surface with a control surface attached in 2-D unsteady incompressible flow. The studies have as their purpose the examination of the use of the location of the elastic axis of the airfoil as a design variable in the search for an actively controlled configuration that has a specified flutter margin. Items of interest include the determination of flutter speed and divergence speed as functions of a nondimensional parameter, a sub c, that measures the location (in semi-chords) of the elastic axis with respect to the airfoil midchord. All other parameters are fixed. The behavior of velocity root locus curves with changes in a sub c is illustrated. Also shown is an example of the use of sensitivity derivatives to reposition poles of the open loop system. The behavior of the actively controlled or closed loop system is also discussed. A set of examples are presented to indicate how the shear center parameter, a sub c, affects the design of the controlled system.

Mars Planimetric Mapping

The 1:5,000,000 scale shaded relief maps of Mars originally compiled from Mariner 9 pictures are being upgraded by adding details visible on Viking Orbiter images. This work is done by modifying the original airbrush drawings; no attempt is made to reposition features according to the latest control nets. Thirteen of these maps have been published to date, two are in compilation, and two are in press. A hard cover atlas containing reduced scale versions of all Mars cartographic products will be published upon completion of the revisions of the 1:5,000,000 scale maps, the 1:2,000,000 scale photomosaics, and Mars color albedo mapping tasks. This atlas will supersede the existing Atlas of Mars prepared by Batson and others.

Spectral slicing X-ray telescope with variable magnification

A telescope for viewing high frequency radiation (soft X-ray, extreme ultraviolet) is described. This telescope has a long focal length with a selection of magnifications despite a short housing. Light enters the telescope and is reflected by the telescope's primary optical system to one of several secondary mirrors at different locations on a movable frame. The secondary mirrors have varying degrees of magnification and select narrow spectral slices of the incident radiation. Thus, both the magnification and effective focal length field of view and wavelength can be altered by repositioning the moving frame. Configurations for spaceborne applications are discussed.
