Localization and reduction of superconducting quantum coherent circuit losses

Quantum sensing and computation can be realized with superconducting microwave circuits. Qubits are engineered quantum systems of capacitors and inductors with non-linear Josephson junctions. They operate in the single-excitation quantum regime, photons of $27 \mu$eV at 6.5 GHz. Quantum coherence is fundamentally limited by materials defects, in particular atomic-scale parasitic two-level systems (TLS) in amorphous dielectrics at circuit interfaces.[1] The electric fields driving oscillating charges in quantum circuits resonantly couple to TLS, producing phase noise and dissipation. We use coplanar niobium-on-silicon superconducting resonators to probe decoherence in quantum circuits. By selectively modifying interface dielectrics, we show that most TLS losses come from the silicon surface oxide, and most non-TLS losses are distributed throughout the niobium surface oxide. Through post-fabrication interface modification we reduced TLS losses by 85% and non-TLS losses by 72%, obtaining record single-photon resonator quality factors above 5 million and approaching a regime where non-TLS losses are dominant. The Fast Modular Reactor (FMR) Pre-Application Regulatory Engagement Plan

The Fast Modular Reactor (FMR) is a 50 MWe Gascooled Fast Reactor (GFR) being developed by General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) under U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program (ARDP), specifically Advanced Reactor Concepts 2020 (ARC-20). The 3-year conceptual design of the FMR is being conducted with verifications of key metrics in fuel, safety, and operational performance. GAEMS is pursuing design, licensing, and commercialization of the proposed reactor, with demonstration by 2030 and deployment by the mid-2030s. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) recommends the pre-application regulatory engagement to provide for early identification of regulatory requirements for advanced reactors and to provide all interested parties with a timely, independent assessment of the safety and security characteristics of advanced reactor designs. As such, GAEMS is developing a pre-application regulatory engagement plan (REP) of the FMR.

SERPENT 2 and TRIPOLI-4 neutronics benchmarking of the Jules Horowitz reactor

Jules Horowitz Reactor (JHR) is a future center for nuclear material testing in Europe, currently under construction at CEA Cadarache in southern France. It has been modelled extensively with CEA's HORUS3D/N neutron calculation package, that includes a Monte-Carlo neutron transport code TRIPOLI-4. In order to support the future computational analyses on the reactor core physics, VTT's Monte Carlo neutronics code SERPENT 2 has been used to create an alternative model of the JHR, taking advantage of the pre-existing Constructive Solid Geometry (CSG) structures on which the TRIPOLI-4 model was built. This work describes a benchmark, in which two JHR core configurations were analyzed using both of these models. The first configuration is a fresh fuel core at the beginning of life, in which aluminum based dummy-devices are installed in the reactor test positions. The second configuration represents the end-of-cycle equilibrium core with a heterogeneous burnup distribution, in which CALIPSO devices containing cladding material samples are installed at the in-core experimental positions, while the reflector positions are occupied by DEN-REP devices containing UO{sub 2} fuel. Neutron flux spectra and heat deposition are the parameters of interest in this study, due to their high importance in creating the desired experimental irradiation environment. The impact of delayed gamma energy deposition will be studied in detail, since the two models account for it with different methods. This work aims to establish a SERPENT 2 model of JHR, understanding its differences and agreements with TRIPOLI-4, and discussing its potential future applications. (authors)

Porewater chemistry in Typha-dominated brackish tidal marsh, PIE LTER, Plum Island Sound, MA, July 2022–September 2024

This dataset contains profile measurements of porewater constituents taken on 3-4 days across the growing seasons in 2022, 2023, and 2024 in a tidal brackish marsh within the Plum Island Ecosystems Long Term Ecological Research site (PIE LTER), located in the Plum Island Sound, Massachusetts (MA). Measurements were taken to monitor changes in porewater chemistry induced by seasonal saltwater intrusion at the site. Samples were taken in two locations: one was close to the creek bank and the other in the marsh interior. Water was sampled from 2-5 depths between the surface to 50cm using a sipper consisting of a hollow stainless steel rod with an opening at the end similar to that described in (Berg & McGlathery, 2001). The rod was pushed into the sediment to the desired depth, typically every 10cm, and water samples were taken by syringe. Water was not obtained at all depths. Samples were preserved and analyzed in the lab. Metadata files Typha_porewater_sipper_dd.csv and Typha_porewater_sipper_flmd.csv contain detailed information on data variables, sampling and QA/QC methods, and site location.
