Inflation, Reionization, and All That: The Primordial Inflation Explorer

The Primordial Inflation Explorer is an Explorer-class mission to measure the gravity-wave signature of primordial inflation through its distinctive imprint on the linear polarization of the cosmic microwave background. PIXIE uses an innovative optical design to achieve background-limited sensitivity in 400 spectral channels spanning 2.5 decades in frequency from 30 GHz to 6 THz (1 cm to 50 micron wavelength). The principal science goal is the detection and characterization of linear polarization from an inflationary epoch in the early universe, with tensor-to-scalar ratio r < 10(exp -3) at 5 standard deviations. The rich PIXIE data set will also constrain physical processes ranging from Big Bang cosmology to the nature of the first stars to physical conditions within the interstellar medium of the Galaxy. I describe the PIXIE instrument and mission architecture needed to detect the inflationary signature using only 4 semiconductor bolometers.

Reconstructing Emission from Pre-Reionization Sources with Cosmic Infrared Background Fluctuation Measurements by the JWST

We present new methodology to use cosmic infrared background (CIB) fluctuations to probe sources at 10 less than or approx. equal to z less than or approx. equal to 30 from a James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) NIRCam configuration that will isolate known galaxies to 28 AB mag at 0.55 m. At present significant mutually consistent source-subtracted CIB fluctuations have been identified in the Spitzer and AKARI data at 25 m, but we demonstrate internal inconsistencies at shorter wavelengths in the recent CIBER data. We evaluate CIB contributions from remaining galaxies and show that the bulk of the high-z sources will be in the confusion noise of the NIRCam beam, requiring CIB studies. The accurate measurement of the angular spectrum of the fluctuations and probing the dependence of its clustering component on the remaining shot noise power would discriminate between the various currently proposed models for their origin and probe the flux distribution of its sources. We show that the contribution to CIB fluctuations from remaining galaxies is large at visible wavelengths for the current instruments precluding probing the putative Lyman-break of the CIB fluctuations. We demonstrate that with the proposed JWST configuration such measurements will enable probing the Lyman-break. We develop a Lyman-break tomography method to use the NIRCam wavelength coverage to identify or constrain, via the adjacent two-band subtraction, the history of emissions over 10 less than or approx. equal to z less than or approx. equal to 30 as the universe comes out of the Dark Ages. We apply the proposed tomography to the current SpitzerIRAC measurements at 3.6 and 4.5 m, to find that it already leads to interestingly low upper limit on emissions at z greater than or approx. equal to 30.

Lyα Galaxies in the Epoch of Reionization (LAGER): Spectroscopic Confirmation of Two Redshift ~7.0 Galaxies

We spectroscopically confirmed two narrowband-selected redshift 7.0 Lyα galaxies and studied their rest-frame UV spectra. The Lyα and other UV nebular lines are very useful to confirm the galactic redshifts and diagnose the different mechanisms driving the ionizing emission. We observed two narrowband-selected z = 7.0 Lyα candidates in the LAGER Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS) field with IMACS at the Magellan telescope and confirmed they are Lyα emitters at z = 6.924 and 6.931. In one galaxy, we also obtained deep near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy, which yields non-detections of the high-ionization UV nebular lines. We measured the upper limits of the ratios of C iv λ1548/Lyα, He ii λ1640/Lyα, O iii]λ1660/Lyα, and C iii]λ1909/Lyα from the NIR spectra. These upper limits imply that the ionizing emission in this galaxy is dominated by normal star formation instead of an active galactic nucleus.

Emergence of the temperature–density relation in the low-density intergalactic medium

We examine the evolution of the phase diagram of the low-density intergalactic medium during the Epoch of Reionization in simulation boxes with varying reionization histories from the Cosmic Reionization on Computers project. The probability density function (PDF) of gas temperature at fixed density exhibits two clear modes: a warm and a cold temperature mode, corresponding to the gas inside and outside of ionized bubbles. We find that the transition between the two modes is ‘universal’ in the sense that its timing is accurately parametrized by the value of the volume-weighted neutral fraction for any reionization history. This ‘universality’ is more complex than just a reflection of the fact that ionized gas is warm and neutral gas is cold: it holds for the transition at a fixed value of gas density, and gas at different densities transitions from the cold to the warm mode at different values of the neutral fraction, reflecting a non-trivial relationship between the ionization history and the evolving gas density PDF. Furthermore, the ‘emergence’ of the tight temperature–density relation in the warm mode is also approximately ‘universally’ controlled by the volume-weighted neutral fraction for any reionization history. In particular, the ‘emergence’ of the temperature–density relation (as quantified by the rapid decrease in its width) occurs when the neutral fraction is 10 –4 ≲ X HI ≲ 10 –3 for any reionization history. Our results indicate that the neutral fraction is a primary quantity controlling the various properties of the temperature–density relation, regardless of reionization history.

Mitigating the optical depth degeneracy using the kinematic Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect with CMB-S4 data

The epoch of reionization is one of the major phase transitions in the history of the universe, and is a focus of ongoing and upcoming cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments with improved sensitivity to small-scale fluctuations. Reionization also represents a significant contaminant to CMB-derived cosmological parameter constraints, due to the degeneracy between the Thomson-scattering optical depth, $\tau$, and the amplitude of scalar perturbations, $A_s$. This degeneracy subsequently hinders the ability of large-scale structure data to constrain the sum of the neutrino masses, a major target for cosmology in the 2020s. In this work, we explore the kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect as a probe of reionization, and show that it can be used to mitigate the optical depth degeneracy with high-sensitivity, high-resolution data from the upcoming CMB-S4 experiment. We discuss the dependence of the kSZ power spectrum on physical reionization model parameters, as well as on empirical reionization parameters, namely $\tau$ and the duration of reionization, $\Delta z$. We show that by combining the kSZ two-point function and the reconstructed kSZ four-point function, degeneracies between $\tau$ and $\Delta z$ can be strongly broken, yielding tight constraints on both parameters. We forecast $\sigma(\tau) = 0.003$ and $\sigma(\Delta z) = 0.25$ for a combination of CMB-S4 and Planck data, including detailed treatment of foregrounds and atmospheric noise. The constraint on $\tau$ is nearly identical to the cosmic-variance limit that can be achieved from large-angle CMB polarization data. The kSZ effect thus promises to yield not only detailed information about the reionization epoch, but also to enable high-precision cosmological constraints on the neutrino mass.

CLEAR: Boosted Lyα Transmission of the Intergalactic Medium in UV-bright Galaxies

Reionization is an inhomogeneous process, thought to begin in small ionized bubbles of the intergalactic medium (IGM) around overdense regions of galaxies. Recent Lyα studies during the epoch of reionization show evidence that ionized bubbles formed earlier around brighter galaxies, suggesting higher IGM transmission of Lyα from these galaxies. We investigate this problem using IR slitless spectroscopy from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Wide-Field Camera 3 (WFC3) G102 grism observations of 148 galaxies selected via photometric redshifts at 6.0 < z < 8.2. These galaxies have spectra extracted from the CANDELS Lyα Emission at Reionization (CLEAR) survey. We combine the CLEAR data for 275 galaxies with the Keck Deep Imaging Multi-Object Spectrograph and MOSFIRE data set from the Texas Spectroscopic Search for Lyα Emission at the End of Reionization Survey. We constrain the Lyα equivalent width (EW) distribution at 6.0 < z < 8.2, which is described by an exponential form, dN / dEW ∝ exp(-EW) W(sub 0), with the characteristic e-folding scale width (W(sub 0)). We confirm a significant drop in the Lyα strength (i.e., W(sub 0)) at z > 6. Furthermore, we compare the redshift evolution of W(sub 0) between galaxies at different UV luminosities. UV-bright (M(sub UV) < −21 [i.e., L(sub UV) > L*]) galaxies show weaker evolution with a decrease of 0.4 ( ± 0.2) dex in W(sub 0) at z > 6, while UV-faint (M(sub UV) > −21 [LUV < L*]) galaxies exhibit a significant drop of 0.7–0.8 (±0.2) dex in W(sub 0) from z < 6 to z > 6. If the change in W(sub 0) is proportional to the change in the IGM transmission for Lyα photons, then this is evidence that the transmission is “boosted” around UV-brighter galaxies, suggesting that reionization proceeds faster in regions around such galaxies.

Effective bias expansion for 21-cm cosmology in redshift space

A near-future detection of the 21-cm signal from the epoch of reionization will provide unique opportunities to probe the underlying cosmology, provided that such cosmological information can be extracted with precision. To this end, we further develop effective field theory (EFT) inspired techniques for the 21-cm brightness temperature field during the epoch of reionization, incorporating renormalized bias and a treatment of redshift space distortions. Notably, we confirm that in redshift space, measures of the 21-cm brightness, e.g., the power spectrum, should have irreducible contributions that lack a bias coefficient and therefore contain direct, astrophysics-free information about the cosmological density field; in this work, we study this effect beyond linear order. To validate our theoretical treatment, we fit the predicted EFT Fourier-space shapes to the thesan suite of hydrodynamical simulations of reionization at the field level, where the considerable number of modes prevents overfitting. We find agreement at the level of a few percent between the 21-cm power spectrum from the EFT fits and simulations over the wave number range k ≲ 0.8 h/Mpc and neutral fraction x HI ≳ 0.4, which is imminently measurable by the Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array and future experiments. Furthermore, the ability of the EFT to describe the 21-cm signal extends to simulations that have different astrophysical prescriptions for reionization as well as simulations with interacting dark matter.
