A quasi-passive CMOS pipeline D/A converter

A novel pipeline digital-to-analog converter configuration, based on switched-capacitor techniques, is described. An n-bit D/A conversion can be implemented by cascading n + 1 unit cells. The device count of the circuit increases linearly, not exponentially, with the conversion accuracy. The new configuration can be pipelined. Hence, the conversion rate can be increased without requiring a higher clock rate. An experimental 10-bit DAC prototype has been fabricated using a 3-micron CMOS process. The results show that high-speed, high-accuracy, and low-power operation can be achieved without special process or postprocess trimming.

Compressed/reconstructed test images for CRAF/Cassini

A set of compressed, then reconstructed, test images submitted to the Comet Rendezvous Asteroid Flyby (CRAF)/Cassini project is presented as part of its evaluation of near lossless high compression algorithms for representing image data. A total of seven test image files were provided by the project. The seven test images were compressed, then reconstructed with high quality (root mean square error of approximately one or two gray levels on an 8 bit gray scale), using discrete cosine transforms or Hadamard transforms and efficient entropy coders. The resulting compression ratios varied from about 2:1 to about 10:1, depending on the activity or randomness in the source image. This was accomplished without any special effort to optimize the quantizer or to introduce special postprocessing to filter the reconstruction errors. A more complete set of measurements, showing the relative performance of the compression algorithms over a wide range of compression ratios and reconstruction errors, shows that additional compression is possible at a small sacrifice in fidelity.

STARS: An integrated general-purpose finite element structural, aeroelastic, and aeroservoelastic analysis computer program

The details of an integrated general-purpose finite element structural analysis computer program which is also capable of solving complex multidisciplinary problems is presented. Thus, the SOLIDS module of the program possesses an extensive finite element library suitable for modeling most practical problems and is capable of solving statics, vibration, buckling, and dynamic response problems of complex structures, including spinning ones. The aerodynamic module, AERO, enables computation of unsteady aerodynamic forces for both subsonic and supersonic flow for subsequent flutter and divergence analysis of the structure. The associated aeroservoelastic analysis module, ASE, effects aero-structural-control stability analysis yielding frequency responses as well as damping characteristics of the structure. The program is written in standard FORTRAN to run on a wide variety of computers. Extensive graphics, preprocessing, and postprocessing routines are also available pertaining to a number of terminals.

Application of beamform to sound propagation in the atmosphere

The feasibility of applying beam-former technology (i.e., the technique that uses the combined signal from an array of sensors as a spatial filter to locate sound sources) in atmospheric acoustics is examined. Special attention is given to the microphone array, data collection, and signal processing technology as well as to an array processing algorithm. It is shown that this algorithm, which incorporates the maximum-likelihood method, is operational. Also discussed is a postprocessing algorithm for eliminating the ghosting sidelobes that arise from the moving sources.

Advanced data acquisition and display techniques for laser velocimetry

The Basic Aerodynamics Research Tunnel (BART) has been equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation for acquiring the data needed for code validation. This paper describes the three-component LDV and the workstation-based data-acquisition system (DAS) which has been developed for the BART. The DAS allows the use of automation and the quick integration of advanced instrumentation, while minimizing the software development time required between investigations. The paper also includes a description of a graphics software library developed to support the windowing environment of the DAS. The real-time displays generated using the graphics library help the researcher ensure the test is proceeding properly. The graphics library also supports the requirements of posttest data analysis. The use of the DAS and graphics libraries is illustrated by presenting examples of the real-time and postprocessing display graphics for LDV investigations.

Computation of the factorized error covariance of the difference between correlated estimators

A state estimation problem where some of the measurements may be common to two or more data sets is considered. Two approaches for computing the error covariance of the difference between filtered estimates (for each data set) are discussed. The first algorithm is based on postprocessing of the Kalman gain profiles of two correlated estimators. It uses UD factors of the covariance of the relative error. The second algorithm uses a square root information filter applied to relative error analysis. In the absence of process noise, the square root information filter is computationally more efficient and more flexible than the Kalman gain (covariance update) method. Both the algorithms (covariance and information matrix based) are applied to a Venus orbiter simulation, and their performances are compared.

A three-dimensional equivalent domain integral method for cracked solids

Three-dimensional FEM analysis is presently undertaken via the general formulation of the equivalent-domain integral method for mixed-mode fracture problems in general anisotropic and nonlinear materials. In mixed-mode integrals, the total J-integral is split into three separate modes of fracture; direct and decomposition methods are effective in this separation of the modes, as presently demonstrated by their application to several pure and mixed-mode fracture problems. The results are found to agree well with those reported in the literature, and suggest the usefulness of the method as a FEM-program postprocessing subroutines.

Improved Depiction Of Computed Unsteady Flows

PLOT4D and STREAKER programs increase ease of production and utility of animated depictions of unsteady flows simulated numerically by advanced computational fluid dynamics. Programs developed to maximize information displayed while minimizing amount stored. PLOT4D, an extended version of PLOT3D, used to depict steady three-dimensional flows, incorporates features making it more computationally efficient than to visualize unsteady flow as succession of steady flows, animating frame by frame. PLOT4D postprocesses numerical output of fluid-dynamical computation into maps of flow quantities on two-coordinate surfaces depicting cut through flow field or conform to body surface. STREAKER generates streaklines, close approximations of patterns traced by streams of dye or smoke released into simulated flows. Streaklines defined via spatial succession of endpoints of pathlines of massless particles released into flow. STREAKER computes endpoints by fourth-order Runge-Kutta integration of velocity vectors.

Reducing S/A Errors In TOPEX GPS Measurements

Proposed scheme for postprocessing of data acquired by receivers monitoring broadcasts from Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites reduces those errors in computed positions of receivers caused by pseudorandom offsets introduced into transmitted signals. Offsets canceled exactly with help of codes available to privileged users and intended to degrade accuracies available to nonpriviledged users, pursuant to policy called "selective availability" (S/A). Proposed scheme devised primarily for GPS receivers aboard TOPEX satellite and at associated ground stations.

Finite element structural redesign by large admissible perturbations

In structural redesign, two structural states are involved; the baseline (known) State S1 with unacceptable performance, and the objective (unknown) State S2 with given performance specifications. The difference between the two states in performance and design variables may be as high as 100 percent or more depending on the scale of the structure. A Perturbation Approach to Redesign (PAR) is presented to relate any two structural states S1 and S2 that are modeled by the same finite element model and represented by different values of the design variables. General perturbation equations are derived expressing implicitly the natural frequencies, dynamic modes, static deflections, static stresses, Euler buckling loads, and buckling modes of the objective S2 in terms of its performance specifications, and S1 data and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) results. Large Admissible Perturbation (LEAP) algorithms are implemented in code RESTRUCT to define the objective S2 incrementally without trial and error by postprocessing FEA results of S1 with no additional FEAs. Systematic numerical applications in redesign of a 10 element 48 degree of freedom (dof) beam, a 104 element 192 dof offshore tower, a 64 element 216 dof plate, and a 144 element 896 dof cylindrical shell show the accuracy, efficiency, and potential of PAR to find an objective state that may differ 100 percent from the baseline design.

TADPLOT program, version 2.0: User's guide

The TADPLOT Program, Version 2.0 is described. The TADPLOT program is a software package coordinated by a single, easy-to-use interface, enabling the researcher to access several standard file formats, selectively collect specific subsets of data, and create full-featured publication and viewgraph quality plots. The user-interface was designed to be independent from any file format, yet provide capabilities to accommodate highly specialized data queries. Integrated with an applications software network, data can be assessed, collected, and viewed quickly and easily. Since the commands are data independent, subsequent modifications to the file format will be transparent, while additional file formats can be integrated with minimal impact on the user-interface. The graphical capabilities are independent of the method of data collection; thus, the data specification and subsequent plotting can be modified and upgraded as separate functional components. The graphics kernel selected adheres to the full functional specifications of the CORE standard. Both interface and postprocessing capabilities are fully integrated into TADPLOT.

A computational design system for rapid CFD analysis

A computation design system (CDS) is described in which these tools are integrated in a modular fashion. This CDS ties together four key areas of computational analysis: description of geometry; grid generation; computational codes; and postprocessing. Integration of improved computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis tools through integration with the CDS has made a significant positive impact in the use of CFD for engineering design problems. Complex geometries are now analyzed on a frequent basis and with greater ease.

Recent progress in unstructured grid generation

A number of recent developments and improvements in unstructured grid generation are discussed. Emphasis is given to the enhancement of capabilities of unstructured grid generation code based on the advancing front technique for generating triangular and tetrahedral grids. Two new methods have been devised to facilitate the process of grid generation: (1) structured background grids and their application to 3D unstructured grid generation and (2) grid restart capability. New postprocessing tools to manipulate generated grids include grid optimization, local remeshing, and interpolation for unstructured grids. Examples and references are given to show the applications of these developments.

In situ backscatter measurements over Pacific Ocean using two coherent focused CO2 lidars

Preliminary results of CS lidar measurements over the Pacific Ocean using two CO2 Doppler lidars operating at 9.1 and 10.6 microns are presented. SNR calculations during real-time and postprocessing were performed using a multistep signal search and signal power estimation algorithm optimized for weak signal conditions. Typical aerosol structure observed in the troposphere was found to consist of a boundary layer, a cloud-pumped layer, and a clean background layer; backscatter from cloud-free air was found to vary over three to four orders of magnitude or more.

Developed to postprocess data acquired by scanning telescope aboard Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS), also adaptable to generation of high-resolution imagery from data acquired in other nonuniform-scanning applications. Achievable resolution not limited by finite size of detectors, and increases with density of scans. With sufficiently dense scans, one obtains resolution beyond diffraction limit of imaging optics.
