Anion Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Ab Initio Studies of the UF – Anion

A synergistic anion photoelectron spectroscopic and ab initio computational study of photodetachment of UF – is reported. The measurement determined a vertical detachment energy of 0.63(03) eV, which is consistent with a spinor-based relativistic coupled-cluster CCSD(T) value of 0.61 eV. The complex spectral features due to excited electronic states and vibrational progressions of UF are analyzed and assigned with the help of spin–orbit-coupled multireference perturbation theory and spinor-based relativistic coupled-cluster calculations. UF and UF – are confirmed to be dominated by ionic bonding. Furthermore, the usefulness of the spinor CCSD(T) approach is demonstrated.

Investigation of photoelectron spectroscopy

The problem of obtaining true and meaningful branching ratios from the photoelectron spectra is investigated. The problem consists of understanding the transmission of an electron energy analyzer for electrons with different energies, understanding the effects of using partially polarized radiation from different vacuum monochromators, and in understanding the effects of the angular distribution of photoelectrons ejected from different orbitals. An analysis of the degree of polarization of monochromatic radiation and of the problem of varying angular distributions led to the construction of a cylindrical mirror electron energy analyzer set at the special angle of 54 deg 44 min so that no discrimination would occur for electrons of different angular distributions. With the analyzer properly calibrated for transmission of electrons of different energies, data were taken at several wavelengths and for several atmospheric gases.

Anion–Cation–Anion Ion Triplet Characterization by Computation and Photoelectron Spectroscopy

Ion triplets of the chloride salts of two commonly used weakly coordinating cations are reported (i.e., Cl – ·NMe 4 + Cl – (1 – ) and Cl – ·PPh 4 + Cl – (2 – )). Negative ion photoelectron spectra at 20 K afford vertical and adiabatic detachment energies of 5.18 and 5.00 eV (1 – ) and 5.03 and 4.70 eV (2 – ), respectively. These results are well reproduced by coupled cluster calculations with single, double, and perturbative triple excitations (CCSD(T)) whereas M06-2X is systematically too small by ~0.3 eV (i.e., 7 kcal mol –1 ). The structures of both 1 – and 2 – have five or six C–H···Cl – interactions that stabilize these cluster anions by 32 (1 – ) and 27 (2 – ) kcal mol –1 as given by their chloride dissociation enthalpies. In conclusion, these values drop to 7.4 and 3.8 kcal mol –1 in dichloromethane based up conductor-like polarizable continuum model calculations and suggest that X – ·M + X – ion triplets with a weakly coordinating cation maybe the reactive form of salts under some conditions.

Investigation of low-Z Coster-Kronig transitions by means of Auger and photoelectron spectroscopy

Experimental intensity ratios of Auger transitions for Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn as well as the relative L sub 2 and L sub 3 level widths of Cu and Zn, derived from their photoelectron spectra, are presented. Evidence is presented that a great deal of vacancy reorganization took place following photoionization and prior to Auger emission. These reorganizations are assumed to be due to Coster-Kronig transitions f sub 23. These results are compared with theoretical calculations and agree with predicted discontinuity at Z = 30 where f sub 23 transitions become energetically impossible.

The photoelectron spectroscopy of ZnCl2

The ionization energies (IEs) corresponding to the Cl ligand electrons and the Zn 3d electrons in ZnCl2, computed using large Gaussian basis sets and a high level of correlation treatment, are presented. The IEs for the Cl ligand electrons are in excellent agreement with those determined from photoelectron spectra. The IEs corresponding to the Zn 3d electrons agree with experiment relatively well in absolute magnitude, but differ in order. The vibrational frequencies of the ground state agree very well with experiment, and predictions are made for the corresponding frequencies in the positive ion.

High-Resolution Photoelectron Spectroscopy of NO3 – Vibrationally Excited Along Its ν3 Mode

The nitrate (NO3) radical has long been the subject of both experimental and theoretical studies due to its complex electronic structure resulting from vibronic interactions between its X̃2A2' and B̃2E' states. In particular, the definite assignment of the fundamental of its degenerate stretching vibration (ν3) is still under debate. Here, we report high-resolution photoelectron spectra of vibrationally pre-excited NO3- using the recently developed IR-cryo-SEVI technique. The anions are excited through infrared (IR) excitation near 1350 cm-1, accessing the ν3 and 2ν3(e') vibrational levels with band centers at 1350.5 and ∼2700 cm-1, respectively. The IR-cryo-SEVI spectrum for 2ν3 pre-excitation shows clear evidence for an intense 321 transition. From the position of this feature (30031 cm-1), the electron affinity of NO3 also determined in this work (31680 cm-1), and the IR excitation energy, we obtain a fundamental frequency of 1051 cm-1 for the ν3 fundamental of the NO3 radical. This assignment and other features in the IR-cryo-SEVI spectra are supported by spectral simulations based on a vibronic Köppel-Domcke-Cederbaum Hamiltonian. The simulations also show that nearly all features in the IR-cryo-SEVI spectra arise because of pseudo-Jahn-Teller coupling between the X̃ and B̃ states of NO3. The results and analysis presented here settle a long-standing controversy regarding the ν3 frequency of NO3.

Fortran Program for X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy Data Reformatting

A FORTRAN program has been written for use on an IBM PC/XT or AT or compatible microcomputer (personal computer, PC) that converts a column of ASCII-format numbers into a binary-format file suitable for interactive analysis on a Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) computer running the VGS-5000 Enhanced Data Processing (EDP) software package. The incompatible floating-point number representations of the two computers were compared, and a subroutine was created to correctly store floating-point numbers on the IBM PC, which can be directly read by the DEC computer. Any file transfer protocol having provision for binary data can be used to transmit the resulting file from the PC to the DEC machine. The data file header required by the EDP programs for an x ray photoelectron spectrum is also written to the file. The user is prompted for the relevant experimental parameters, which are then properly coded into the format used internally by all of the VGS-5000 series EDP packages.

An X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy study of nickel and nickel-base alloy surface alterations in simulated hot corrosion conditions with emphasis on eventual application to turbine blade corrosion

The spectra of the pure metals tested and their oxides were used to analyze the patterns obtained for various superalloys. The quantitative results for two superalloys revealed differences between the surface compositions and their behavior under different conditions of oxidation. The following results occurred during the hot corrosion of samples in the presence of Na2So4: a lack of Ti migration; strong effects on Cr; and, a higher speed of alteration of superalloys.

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy study of nickel and nickel-base alloy surface alterations in simulated hot corrosion conditions with emphasis on eventual application to turbine blade corrosion

Research on the high temperature oxidation and Na2SO4 induced hot corrosion of some nickel base superalloys was accomplished by using ESCA to determine the surface composition of the oxidized or corroded samples. Oxidation was carried out at 900 or 1000 C in slowly flowing O2 for samples of B-1900, NASA-TRW VIA, 713C, and IN-738. Oxidation times ranged from 0.5 to 100 hr. Hot corrosion of B-1900 was induced applying a coating of Na2SO4 to peroxidized samples, the heating to 900 C in slowly flowing O2. For oxidized samples, the predominant type of scale formed by each superalloy was determined, and a marked surface enrichment of Ti was found in each case. For corroded samples, the transfer of significant amounts of material from the oxide layer to the surface of the salt layer was observed to occur long before the onset of accelerating weight-gain. Changes in surface composition were observed to coincide with the beginning of accelerating corrosion, the most striking of which was a tenfold decrease in the sulfur to sodium ration and an increase in the Cr(VI) ratio.

High resolution threshold photoelectron spectroscopy by electron attachment

A system is provided for determining the stable energy levels of a species ion, of an atomic, molecular, or radical type, by application of ionizing energy of a predetermined level, such as through photoionization. The system adds a trapping gas to the gaseous species to provide a technique for detection of the energy levels. The electrons emitted from ionized species are captured by the trapping gas, only if the electrons have substantially zero kinetic energy. If the electrons have nearly zero energy, they are absorbed by the trapping gas to produce negative ions of the trapping gas that can be detected by a mass spectrometer. The applied energies (i.e. light frequencies) at which large quantities of trapping gas ions are detected, are the stable energy levels of the positive ion of the species. SF6 and CFCl3 have the narrowest acceptance bands, so that when they are used as the trapping gas, they bind electrons only when the electrons have very close to zero kinetic energy.

Polytetrafluoroethylene transfer film studied with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) was rubbed against nickel in ultrahigh vacuum at loads up to 3.9 N and speeds up to 94 mm/sec. The transfer film formed on the nickel was analyzed using X-ray phototectron spectroscopy. The film was indistinguishable from bulk PTFE except for the possible presence of a small amount of NiF2. The transfer film was found to be about 1 molecule (0.5 nm) thick under all conditions; but at speeds above 10 mm/sec, there was evidence of bulk transfer in the form of fragments as well. The thickness measurements required a choice among conflicting published values of the inelastic mean free path for electrons in polymers. The values chosen gave internally consistent results.
