Differential two-particle number and momentum correlations with the AMPT, UrQMD, and EPOS models in Pb-Pb collisions at s N N = 2.76 TeV

We report studies of charge-independent and charge-dependent two-particle differential number correlation functions, R 2 (Δη,Δφ), and transverse momentum correlation functions, P 2 (Δη,Δφ), of charged particles produced in Pb–Pb collisions at the LHC center-of-mass energy √sNN= 2.76 TeV with the UrQMD, AMPT, and EPOS models. Model calculations for R2 and P2 correlation functions are presented for inclusive charged hadrons (h ± ) in selected transverse momentum ranges and with full azimuthal coverage in the pseudorapidity range |η|<1.0. We compare these calculations for the strength, shape, and particularly the width of the correlation functions with recent measurements of these observables by the ALICE collaboration. Our analysis indicates that comparative studies of R 2 and P 2 correlation functions provide valuable insight towards the understanding of particle production in Pb–Pb collisions. We find, in particular, that these models produce quantitatively different magnitudes and shapes for these correlation functions and none reproduce the results reported by the ALICE collaboration. Accounting for quantum number conservation in models, particularly charge conservation, is mandatory to reproduce the detailed measurements of number and transverse momentum correlation functions.

Measurement of muon pairs produced via γ γ scattering in nonultraperipheral Pb + Pb collisions at s N N = 5.02 TeV with the ATLAS detector

Results of a measurement of dimuon photoproduction in nonultraperipheral Pb + Pb collisions at √ s NN = 5.02 TeV are presented. The measurement uses ATLAS data from the 2015 and 2018 Pb + Pb data-taking periods at the LHC with an integrated luminosity of 1.94 nb –1 . The γγ → μ + μ – pairs are identified via selections on pair momentum asymmetry and acoplanarity. Differential cross sections for dimuon production are measured in different centrality, average muon momentum, and pair rapidity intervals as functions of acoplanarity and k ⊥ , the transverse momentum kick of one muon relative to the other. Measurements are also made as a function of the rapidity separation of the muons and the angle of the muon pair relative to the second-order event plane to test whether magnetic fields generated in the quark-gluon plasma affect the measured muons. A prior observation of a centrality-dependent broadening of the acoplanarity distribution is confirmed. Furthermore, the improved precision of the measurement reveals a depletion in the number of pairs having small acoplanarity or k ⊥ values in more central collisions. The acoplanarity distributions in a given centrality interval are observed to vary with the mean p T of the muons in the pair, but the k ⊥ distributions do not. Comparisons with recent theoretical predictions are made. The predicted trends associated with effects of magnetic fields on the dimuons are not observed.

Correlations between flow and transverse momentum in Xe + Xe and Pb + Pb collisions at the LHC with the ATLAS detector: A probe of the heavy-ion initial state and nuclear deformation

The correlations between flow harmonics v n for n = 2, 3, and 4 and mean transverse momentum [p T ] in 129 Xe + 129 Xe and 208 Pb + 208 Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.44 and 5.02 TeV, respectively, are measured using charged particles with the ATLAS detector. The correlations are potentially sensitive to the shape and size of the initial geometry, nuclear deformation, and initial momentum anisotropy. The effects from nonflow and centrality fluctuations are minimized, respectively, via a subevent cumulant method and an event-activity selection based on particle production at very forward rapidity. The v n -[p T ] correlations show strong dependencies on centrality, harmonic number n, p T , and pseudorapidity range. Current models qualitatively describe the overall centralityand system-dependent trends but fail to quantitatively reproduce all features of the data. In central collisions, where models generally show good agreement, the v 2 -[p T ] correlations are sensitive to the triaxiality of the quadruple deformation. Comparison of the model with the Pb + Pb and Xe + Xe data confirms that the 129 Xe nucleus is a highly deformed triaxial ellipsoid that has neither a prolate nor oblate shape. This provides strong evidence for a triaxial deformation of the 129 Xe nucleus from high-energy heavy-ion collisions.

Measurement of electrons from beauty-hadron decays in $pp$ and Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = $5.02$ TeV

The production of electrons from beauty-hadron decays was measured at midrapidity in proton-proton ($pp$) and central Pb-Pb collisions at center-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon pair $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV, using the ALICE detector at the LHC. The cross section measured in p p collisions in the transverse momentum interval $2$ < $p_T$ < $26$ $\mathrm{GeV}$ / $c$ was compared with models based on perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculations. The yield in the 10% most central Pb-Pb collisions, measured in the interval $2$ < $p_T$ < $26$ $\mathrm{GeV}$ / $c$, was used to compute the nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$, extrapolating the $pp$ reference cross section to $p_T$ larger than 8 $\mathrm{GeV}$ / $c$. The measured $R_{AA}$ shows significant suppression of the yield of electrons from beauty-hadron decays at high $p_T$ and does not show a significant dependence above 8 $\mathrm{GeV}$ / $c$ within uncertainties. The results are described by several theoretical models based on different implementations of the interaction of heavy quarks with a quark-gluon plasma, which predict a smaller energy loss for beauty quarks compared to light and charm quarks.

Proton and neutron density distributions at supranormal density in low- and medium-energy heavy-ion collisions. II. Central Pb + Pb collisions

This paper represents a continuation of our investigation into the limitations on total, proton, and neutron particle number densities, as well as the asymmetry of proton and neutron density distributions achievable in central heavy-ion collisions. We explore these aspects at low and medium energies within the framework of the Boltzmann-Uhlenbeck-Uehling (pBUU) transport and time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) models. Previous studies, focusing on symmetric and asymmetric collisions of Ca and Sn nuclei [1], and initial results on Pb-nuclei collisions [2], emphasized the role of the Coulomb interaction in these events. Our findings indicated that: (i) the highest total densities predicted at 𝐸 beam = 800 MeV/nucleon were on the order of ≈ 2.5⁢𝜌 0 (𝜌 0 = 0.16 fm −3 ), (ii) the proton-neutron asymmetry for maximal densities, 𝛿=(𝜌$^{max}_{n}$− 𝜌$^{max}_{p}$)/(𝜌$^{max}_{n}$+𝜌$^{max}_{p}$), did not generally exceed the asymmetry in the initial state of the collision at all beam energies and tended to decrease during the reaction, and (iii) a significant portion of this asymmetry had its microscopic origin in Coulomb forces, masking the pure nuclear contribution. These new findings, particularly relevant in the astrophysical context, are further examined in this work, focusing on the heaviest target-projectile combination 212,208 Pb accessible in an experiment. We introduce the SkT3 Skyrme force model, not previously used for the Pb system, and compare it to the SV-bas and SV-sym34 models to explore the symmetry-energy dependence of the results. Contour plots of nucleonic densities are presented, contrasting the time evolution of the density distributions in low (TDHF) and high (pBUU) models. We also present the evolution of normalized maximal proton, neutron, and total nucleon number density with increasing beam energy in the full pBUU model and the Vlasov approximation, aiming to explore the impact of correlations in the reaction. The time evolution of the proton and neutron density distributions in the plane transverse to the beam direction is illustrated at both low and high beam energy. In conclusion, our detailed examination of the Pb system in this work provides further essential evidence that the aforementioned findings (i)–(iii) are only weakly dependent on system size and a symmetry-energy model, and thus, they are of more general importance.

Search for the jet-induced diffusion wake in the quark-gluon plasma via measurements of jet-track correlations in photon-jet events in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV with the ATLAS detector

This paper presents a measurement of jet-track correlations in photon-jet events, using 1.72 nb −1 of Pb+Pb data at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Events with energetic photon-jet pairs are selected, where the photon and jet are approximately back-to-back in azimuth. The angular correlation between jets and charged-particle tracks with transverse momentum (𝑝 T ) in the range 0.5–2.0 GeV in the hemisphere opposite to the jet, |Δ⁢𝜙(jet,track)|>𝜋/2, is measured as a function of their relative pseudorapidity difference, |Δ⁢𝜂(jet, track)|. In central Pb+Pb collisions, these correlations are predicted to be sensitive to the diffusion wake in the quark-gluon plasma resulting from the lost energy of high-𝑝T partons traversing the plasma, with a characteristic modification as a function of |Δ⁢𝜂(jet, track)|. The correlations are examined with different selections on the jet-to-photon 𝑝 T ratio to select events with different degrees of energy loss. No diffusion wake signal is observed within the current sensitivity and upper limits at 95% confidence level on the diffusion wake amplitude are reported.

Measurement of the J / ψ Polarization with Respect to the Event Plane in Pb-Pb Collisions at the LHC

We study the polarization of inclusive J/ψ produced in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{^sNN}$ = 5.02 TeV at the LHC in the dimuon channel, via the measurement of the angular distribution of its decay products. We perform the study in the rapidity region 2.5 < y < 4, for three transverse momentum intervals (2 < p T < 4, 4 < p T < 6, 6 < p T < 10 GeV/c) and as a function of the centrality of the collision for 2 < p T < 6 GeV/c. For the first time, the polarization is measured with respect to the event plane of the collision, by considering the angle between the positive-charge decay muon in the J/ψ rest frame and the axis perpendicular to the event-plane vector in the laboratory system. A small transverse polarization is measured, with a significance reaching 3.9σ at low p T and for intermediate centrality values. The polarization could be connected with the behavior of the quark-gluon plasma, formed in Pb-Pb collisions, as a rotating fluid with large vorticity, as well as with the existence of a strong magnetic field in the early stage of its formation.

Observation of Medium-Induced Yield Enhancement and Acoplanarity Broadening of Low-𝑝T Jets from Measurements in 𝑝⁢𝑝 and Central Pb-Pb Collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

The ALICE Collaboration reports the measurement of semi-inclusive distributions of charged-particle jets recoiling from a high transverse momentum (high p T ) hadron trigger in proton-proton and central Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV. A data-driven statistical method is used to mitigate the large uncorrelated background in central Pb-Pb collisions. Recoil jet distributions are reported for jet resolution parameter R = 0.2, 0.4, and 0.5 in the range 7 < p T.jet < 140 GeV=c and trigger-recoil jet azimuthal separation π/2 < Δφ < π. The measurements exhibit a marked medium-induced jet yield enhancement at low p T and at large azimuthal deviation from Δφ ~ π. The enhancement is characterized by its dependence on Δφ, which has a slope that differs from zero by 4.7σ. Comparisons to model calculations incorporating different formulations of jet quenching are reported. These comparisons indicate that the observed yield enhancement arises from the response of the QGP medium to jet propagation.

Measurements of Chemical Potentials in Pb-Pb Collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=5.02 TeV

This Letter presents the most precise measurement to date of the matter-antimatter imbalance at midrapidity in Pb-Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV. Using the Statistical Hadronization framework, it is possible to obtain the value of the electric charge and baryon chemical potentials, μ Q = -0.18 ± 0.90 MeV and μ B = 0.71 ± 0.45 MeV, with unprecedented precision. A centrality-differential study of the antiparticle-to-particle yield ratios of charged pions, protons, Ω baryons, and light (hyper)nuclei is performed. These results indicate that the system created in Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC is on average baryon-free and electrically neutral at midrapidity.

Charged-particle multiplicity fluctuations in Pb–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm {NN}}}$ = 2.76 TeV

Measurements of event-by-event fluctuations of charged-particle multiplicities in Pb–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm {NN}}}$ = 2.76 TeV using the ALICE detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are presented in the pseudorapidity range |η| < 0.8 and transverse momentum 0.2 < p T < 2.0 GeV/c. The amplitude of the fluctuations is expressed in terms of the variance normalized by the mean of the multiplicity distribution. The η and p T dependences of the fluctuations and their evolution with respect to collision centrality are investigated. The multiplicity fluctuations tend to decrease from peripheral to central collisions. The results are compared to those obtained from HIJING and AMPT Monte Carlo event generators as well as to experimental data at lower collision energies. Additionally, the measured multiplicity fluctuations are discussed in the context of the isothermal compressibility of the high-density strongly-interacting system formed in central Pb–Pb collisions.

Medium-induced modification of azimuthal correlations of electrons from heavy-flavor hadron decays with charged particles in Pb–Pb collisions at $\mathbf {\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} = 5.02}$ TeV

The azimuthal-correlation distributions between electrons from the decays of heavy-flavor hadrons and associated charged particles in Pb–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} = 5.02$ TeV are reported for the 0–10% and 30–50% centrality classes. This measurement provides access to the jet-like correlation observables in the heavy-flavor sector in Pb–Pb collisions. The analysis is performed for trigger electrons from heavy-flavor hadron decays with transverse momentum $4< p_\textrm{T}^\textrm{e} < 16~\textrm{GeV}/c$, considering associated particles within the transverse-momentum range $1< p_\textrm{T}^\textrm{assoc} < 7$ GeV/c, and a pseudorapidity difference of $|\Delta \eta |<1$ between the trigger electron and associated particles. The per-trigger nuclear modification factor ( I AA ) is calculated to compare the near- and away-side peak yields to those in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 5.02$ TeV. In 0–10% central collisions, the indicates a hint of enhancement of associated-particle yields with $p_\textrm{T}<3$ GeV/c on the near side, and a suppression of yields with $p_\textrm{T}>4$ GeV/c on the away side. The I AA for electron triggers from heavy-flavor hadron decays is compared with that for light-flavor and strange-particle triggers to investigate the dependence on different fragmentation processes and parton-medium dynamics, and is found to be the same within uncertainties.

Distribution and evolution of Zn, Cd, and Pb in Apollo 16 regolith samples and the average U-Pb ages of the parent rocks

The concentration of surface (low temperature site) and interior (high temperature site) Cd, Zn, and Pb in 13 Apollo 16 highland fines samples, pristine rock 65325, and mare fines sample 75081 were analyzed directly from the thermal release profiles obtained by flameless atomic absorption technique (FLAA). Cd and Zn in pristine ferroan anothosite 65325, anorthositic grains of the most mature fines 65701, and basaltic rock fragments of mare fines 75081 were almost all surface Cd and Zn indicating that most volatiles were deposited on the surfaces of vugs, vesicles and microcracks during the initial cooling process. A considerable amount of interior Cd and Zn was observed in agglutinates. This result suggests that high temperature site interior volatiles originate from entrapment during the lunar maturation processes. Interior Cd found in the most mature fines sample 65701 was only about 15% of the total Cd in the sample. Interior Pb present in Apollo 16 fines samples went up to 60%. From our Cd studies we can assume that this interior Pb in highland fines samples is largely due to the radiogenic decay which occurred after the redistribution of the volatiles took place. We obtained an average age of 4.0 b.y. for the parent rocks of Apollo 16 highland regolith from our interior Pb analyses.

Elliptic flow of charged particles at midrapidity relative to the spectator plane in Pb–Pb and Xe–Xe collisions

Measurements of the elliptic flow coefficient relative to the collision plane defined by the spectator neutrons v 2 {$Ψ_{SP}$} in collisions of Pb ions at center-of-mass energy per nucleon–nucleon pair $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 2.76 TeV and Xe ions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 5.44 TeV are reported. The results are presented for charged particles produced at midrapidity as a function of centrality and transverse momentum for the 5–70% and 0.2–6 GeV/c ranges, respectively. The ratio between v 2 {$Ψ_{SP}$} and the elliptic flow coefficient relative to the participant plane v 2 {4}, estimated using four-particle correlations, deviates by up to 20% from unity depending on centrality. This observation differs strongly from the magnitude of the corresponding eccentricity ratios predicted by the T R ENTo and the elliptic power models of initial state fluctuations that are tuned to describe the participant plane anisotropies. The differences can be interpreted as a decorrelation of the neutron spectator plane and the reaction plane because of fragmentation of the remnants from the colliding nuclei, which points to an incompleteness of current models describing the initial state fluctuations. A significant transverse momentum dependence of the ratio v 2 {$Ψ_{SP}$} /v 2 {4} is observed in all but the most central collisions, which may help to understand whether momentum anisotropies at low and intermediate transverse momentum have a common origin in initial state fluctuations. The ratios of v 2 {$Ψ_{SP}$} and v 2 {4} to the corresponding initial state eccentricities for Xe–Xe and Pb–Pb collisions at similar initial entropy density show a difference of (7.0 ± 0.9)% with an additional variation of +1.8% when including RHIC data in the T R ENTo parameter extraction. These observations provide new experimental constraints for viscous effects in the hydrodynamic modeling of the expanding quark–gluon plasma produced in heavy-ion collisions at the LHC.

In situ characterization of metastable Pb3O5 and Pb2O3 phases during thermal decomposition of PbO2 to PbO

Nonstoichiometric lead oxides play a key role in the formation and cycling of the positive electrodes in a lead acid battery. These phases have been linked to the underutilization of the positive active material but also play a key role in the battery’s cycle life, providing inter-particle adhesion and the connection to the underlying lead grid. Similar phases have previously been identified by mass loss or color change during thermal annealing of PbO2 to PbO, suggesting that at least two intermediate PbOx phases exist. Using multiple in situ analysis techniques (powder diffraction, x-ray absorption, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) and ex situ nuclear magnetic resonance measurements, the structural conversion and changes in the lead oxidation states were identified during this process. Isolation of the PbOx phases enabled confirmation of Pb3O5 and Pb2O3 by diffraction and the first 207Pb NMR measurement of these intermediates.

U, Th, Pb and REE abundances and Pb 207/Pb 206 ages of individual minerals in returned lunar material by ion microprobe mass analysis.

Results of ion microprobe analyses of Apollo 11, 12 and 14 material, showing that U, Th, Pb and REE are concentrated in accessory minerals such as apatite, whitlockite, zircon, baddeleyite, zirkelite, and tranquillityite. Th/U ratios are found to vary by over a factor of 40 in these minerals. K, Ba, Rb and Sr have been localized in a K rich, U and Th poor glass phase that is commonly associated with the U and Th bearing accessory minerals. Li is observed to be fairly evenly distributed between the various accessory phases. The phosphates have been found to have REE abundance patterns (normalized to the chondrite abundances) that are fairly flat, while the Zr bearing minerals have patterns that rise steeply, by factors of ten or more, from La to Gd. All the accessory minerals have large negative Eu anomalies. Radiometric age dates (Pb 207/Pb 206) of the individual U and Th bearing minerals compare favorably with the Pb 207/Pb 206 age of the bulk rocks.

U-Pb ages and Sr, Pb and Nd isotope data for gneisses near the Kolar Schist Belt: Evidence for the juxtaposition of discrete Archean terranes

Uranium-lead ages and Sr, Pb, and Nd isotopic data for gneisses near the Kolar Schist Belt and their interpretation as evidence for the juxtaposition of discrete Archean terranes were presented. The granodioritic Kambha gneiss east of the schist belt has a zircon age of 2532 + or - 3 Ma and mantle-like initial Sr, Pb, and Nd isotopic ratios. Therefore these gneisses are thought to represent new crust added to the craton in the latest Archean. By contrast, more mafic Dod gneisses and leucocratic Dosa gneisses west of the schist belt (2632 + or - 7 and 2610 + or - 10 Ma) show evidence for contamination of their magmatic precursors (LREE-enriched mantle-derived for the Dod gneisses) by older (greater than 3.2 Ga) continental crust. Fragments of this older crust may be present as granitic and tonalitic inclusions in the 2.6-Ga gneisses and in shear zones. The antiquity of these fragments is supported by their Nd, Sr, and Pb isotopic compositions and by 2.8 to greater than 3.2 Ga zircon cores.

Properties of Pb(1-x)Bi(x)/Ba2YCu3O(x) composites - Reaction of Ba2YCu3O(x) with Pb and Bi

This paper describes experiments conducted with a purpose of fabricating superconducting composites from Pb, Bi, and Ba2YCu3O(x), together the results of SEM examinations and energy dispersive spectroscopy performed on products. Results showed a limited utility of Pb and Pb(1-x)Bi(x) as matrices for ceramic superconductors. It was found that cold pressing followed by sintering at 200 C resulted in a composite which excluded flux below 90 K but did not show zero electrical resistance until the metal superconducting transition. Processing at 400 or 950 C resulted in oxygen depleted perovskite and/or metal oxides; these materials displayed greatly degraded superconducting properties. Finally, processing at 800 C resulted in high Tc only for composites containing more than 90 wt pct ceramic.
