Cardiac arrhythmias during exercise testing in healthy men.

Clinically healthy male executives who participate in a long-term physical conditioning program have demonstrated cardiac arrhythmia during and after periodic ergometric testing at submaximal and maximal levels. In 1,385 tests on 248 subjects, it was found that 34% of subjects demonstrated an arrhythmia at some time and 13% of subjects developed arrhythmia on more than one test. Premature systoles of ventricular origin were most common, but premature systoles of atrial origin, premature systoles of junctional origin, paroxysmal atrial tachycardia, atrioventricular block, wandering pacemaker, and pre-excitation were also seen. Careful post-test monitoring and pulse rate regulated training sessions are suggested for such programs.

Effects of ionizing radiation on CCD's

The effects of 1.2 MeV gamma radiation and 20 MeV electrons on the operational characteristics of CCDs are studied. The effects of ionizing radiation on the charge transfer efficiency, dark current, and input/output circuitry are described. The improved radiation hardness of buried channel CCDs is compared to surface channel results. Both ion implanted and epitaxial layer buried channel device results are included. The advantages of using a single thickness SiO2 gate dielectric are described. The threshold voltage shifts and surface state density changes of dry, steam, and HCl doped oxides are discussed. Recent results on the recovery times and total dose effects of high dose rate pulses of 20 MeV electrons are reported.

A new flight test data system for NASA aeronautical flight research

The airborne integrated flight test data system (AIFTDS) is described. This system integrates an airborne digital computer with a high-bit-rate pulse code modulation system. Its design was influenced by in-house technical experience with similar modules and by the multiproject environment in which it was expected to operate. The present work describes events leading to the development of the system, reviews factors that influenced the objectives for the system and the resulting design, and describes the elements themselves. Block diagrams supplement the text.

Outlook for metal lasers

Lasers utilizing atomic metallic vapors are considered with emphasis on a double discharge technique and multiply pulsed experiments. Data are presented on the effect of time delay after the first electrical discharge and the effect of lasant temperature along with results of absorption measurements utilizing a 13 mm diameter laser tube. Data obtained from multiply pulsed experiments for discharge diameters varying from 1 to 4 cm indicate that the efficiency increases with the pulsing rate.

Study of optimal training protocols and devices for developing and maintaining physical fitness in females prior to and during space flight

Pedalling a bicycle at least ten minutes a day at 85% of maximum pulse rate, three days a week for ten weeks will produce moderate increases in overall strength and physical work capacity in college-age females. The longer the training session, up to thirty minutes per session, the greater are the increases in physical work capacity that result when college-age females are trained three days a week for ten weeks at 85% of their maximum heart rate.

Airborne bathymetric charting using pulsed blue-green lasers

Laboratory and airborne experiments have proven the feasibility and demonstrated the techniques of an airborne pulsed laser system for rapidly mapping coastal water bathymetry. Water depths of 10 plus or minus 0.25 m were recorded in waters having an effective attenuation coefficient of 0.175 m. A 2-MW peak power Nd:YAG pulsed laser was flown at an altitude of 600 m. An advanced system, incorporating a mirror scanner, a high pulsed rate laser, and a good signal processor, could survey coastal zones at the rate of several square miles per hour.

An anemometer for measuring velocities on the .25 to 4.25 M/sec range

A vane type anemometer was developed as a secondary standard for the on site calibration of wind velocity sensors. The instrument outputs an electrical pulse for each interruption of a light source by an eight vane fan. The pulse rate is proportional to the fan's angular speed and linearly related to wind velocity over the range 0.25 to 4.27 m/sec.

Fresnel-Fizeau effect in a rotating optical fiber ring interferometer

Measurements of the Fresnel-Fizeau effect in a fiber ring interferometer gyroscope are reported. The presence of the dispersion term in the Fresnel drag coefficient was discernable. The temperature dependence of the coefficient bears on the temperature sensitivity of the optical fiber gyroscope. An alternate approach to measuring fiber dispersion is an added benefit, leading to determination of maximum pulse rate transmitted through single-mode fibers.

Long-duration high-efficiency operation of a continuously pulsed copper laser utilizing copper bromide as a lasant

A copper laser utilizing copper bromide as a lasant and neon as the buffer gas has been operated at an average laser power of between 16 and 19.5 W for a period of 68 h. Lasing was attained at a pulsing rate of 16.7 kHz in a quartz discharge tube 2.5-cm in diameter with an electrode separation of 200 cm. The laser energy/pulse and peak power/pulse corresponding to an average power of 19.5 W are 1.2 mJ and 30 kW, respectively. The ratio of laser power at 510.6 and 578.2 nm varied from 3.9 to 1.1 corresponding to a total average laser power of 4 and 18 W, respectively. The highest wall plug and capacitor efficiency measured during 68 h of operation were 0.7 and 1.1%, respectively.

Certain questions of the acclimatization of construction workers to the conditions of a subtropical climate

The period of active acclimatization was determined for construction workers coming into a subtropical climate. Changes were observed in metabolic processes, oxygen needs, pulse rate, arterial pressure, body and skin temperature, body weight, water consumption and loss, and the comfort zone of heat sensitivity. It was concluded that acclimatization is facilitated if introduction to the hot climate occurs in the mild cool season, rather than the summer. This also prevents heat prostration and improves the development of adaptive mechanisms.

Accommodations assessment: Spaceborne Doppler lidar wind measuring system

An accommodations analysis performed by the MSFC Preliminary Design Office for a spaceborne Doppler lidar wind measuring system is summarized. A dedicated, free-flying spacecraft design concept is described. Mass and beginning-of-life power requirements are estimated at 2260 kg and 6.0 - 8.5 kW respectively, to support a pulsed, CO2, Doppler lidar having a pulse energy of 10 J, pulse rate of 8 Hz, and efficiency of approximately 5%. Under the assumptions of the analysis, such a system would provide wind measurements on a global scale, with accuracies of a few meters per second.

Coherently pulsed laser source

An electronically controllable apparatus is described which modulates a continuous wave laser beam so as to produce an output beam consisting of coherent pulses that are electronically controllable as to both pulse repetition rate and pulse width. The apparatus includes two acoustic devices positioned so that the laser beam passes through them in sequence, and apparatus for passing sound waves through the devices to frequency shift the laser radiation as well as to diffract it. Each acoustic device generates sound waves containing a group of frequencies which result in spaced pulses. The first acoustic device is countered by the second acoustic device to produce a collimated, coherently pulsed, laser beam.

A shuttle scanning laser altimeter for topographic mapping

The shuttle scanning laser altimeter is an instrument, currently under development at JPL, capable of producing a three-dimensional elevation map of the topography along a wide swath beneath a spaceborne platform. Operating on the same principle as radar (broadcast of a short pulse of radiation and timing the reception of an echo) the very narrow beamwidths and high pulse rates of modern lasers would allow a significant breakthrough in the areal resolution capability of altimeters. Specifically, the copper vapor laser currently available and planned for use would provide 50 meter horizontal and 3 meter vertical resolution over a 10 kilometer continuous swath or, in a snapshot mode, a 50 kilometer square area.

Submegahertz frequency-stablized Nd:YAG oscillator

The operation of a 5-msec, quasi-continuous wave (CW) 10-Hz repetition-rate pulsed single-frequency Nd:YAG oscillator with a feedback stabilized frequency bandwidth of less than 200 kHz is described. The major problems associated with frequency stabilization for quasi-CW operation, frequency chirp and maintenance of the frequency control signal, are described, and the design of a wide-bandwidth frequency locking system with a search and chirp compensation loop is given. This frequency stabilized oscillator is a potentially useful laser source for atmospheric wind velocity measurements by coherent lidar Doppler velocimetry, which require a laser source with less than 1 MHz linewidth, and also has applications in high-resolution nonlinear spectroscopic studies at Fourier-transform-limited linewidths.

Applications of excimer lasers for atmospheric species measurements

Excimer lasers are proven sources of high pulse energy and high average power coherent radiation at several wavelength regions throughout the ultraviolet spectrum. If designed properly, excimer lasers can be operated with both low divergence and narrow spectral bandwidth, and using an oscillator - injection-locked amplifier configuration they can be tuned over a 10 to 20 A bandwidth without appreciable loss in energy. Additional wavelength coverage from excimer lasers can be obtained by stimulated Raman scattering. With the development of magnetic switching for the high voltage, high power switches, the electric discharge excimer laser can also be operated reliably for extended periods of time at high pulse rates. All these features make excimer lasers ideal sources of ultraviolet radiation for a variety of remote and in-situ atmospheric species measurements.
