Direct and Inverse Photoelectron Spectroscopy Evidence for a Revised Picture of Electronic States of Negative Polarons in n‐Doped C 60

Abstract Determining the electronic levels associated with polarons, the fundamental charge carriers in organic semiconductors, is key to understanding the charge transport properties of these materials. Recent findings challenge the traditional view of these electronic levels by highlighting the importance of intra‐molecular Coulomb interactions in polarons. Experimental evidence was previously presented for a revised model of the negative polaron in the case of the polymer semiconductor poly(NDI2OD‐T 2 ); there, the addition of an excess electron was seen to lead to the emergence of a singly occupied state within the energy gap of the undoped material and an unoccupied state above the edge of the conduction states . Here, focus is on a small‐molecule semiconductor, C 60 , and spectral evidence is provided of a similar picture for the new states appearing upon polaron formation. Specifically, direct and inverse photoemission spectroscopy is used to investigate the density of states in C 60 films n‐doped with two dimeric dopants. The Coulomb interaction energy (Hubbard U ) of the C 60 anion is experimentally determined to be ≈1.1 eV, a value that aligns closely with theoretical predictions.

SAP-X2C: Optimally-Simple Two-Component Relativistic Hamiltonian with Size-Intensive Picture Change

We present a simple relativistic exact 2-component (X2C) Hamiltonian that models two-electron picture-change effects using Lehtola’s superposition of atomic potentials (SAP) [S. Lehtola, J. Chem. Theory Comput. 15, 1593−1604 (2019)]. The SAP-X2C approach retains the low cost and technical simplicity of the popular 1-electron X2C (1eX2C) predecessor but is significantly more accurate and has a well-defined thermodynamic limit, making it applicable to extended systems (such as large molecules and periodic crystals). The assessment of the SAP-X2C-based Hartree−Fock total and spinor energies, spin−orbit splittings, equilibrium bond distances, and harmonic vibrational frequencies suggests that SAP-X2C is similar to the more complex atomic meanfield (AMF) X2C counterparts in its ability to approximate the 4-component Dirac−Hartree−Fock reference.

Joint X-Ray, Kinetic Sunyaev–Zeldovich, and Weak Lensing Measurements: Toward a Consensus Picture of Efficient Gas Expulsion from Groups and Clusters

There is no consensus on how baryon feedback shapes the underlying matter distribution from either simulations or observations. We confront the uncertain landscape by jointly analyzing new measurements of the gas distribution around groups and clusters—DESI+ACT kinetic Sunyaev–Zel’dovich (kSZ) effect profiles and eROSITA X-ray gas masses—with mean halo masses characterized by galaxy–galaxy lensing. Across a wide range of halo masses ( M 500 = 10 13−14 M ⊙ ) and redshifts (0 < z < 1), we find evidence of more efficient gas expulsion beyond several R 500 than predicted by most state-of-the-art simulations. A like-with-like comparison reveals all kSZ and X-ray observations are inconsistent with the fiducial 1 Gpc 3 hydrodynamical FLAMINGO simulation, which was calibrated to reproduce pre-eROSITA X-ray gas fractions: eROSITA X-ray gas fractions are 2 × lower than the simulation, and the kSZ measurements are combined >8σ discrepant. The FLAMINGO simulation variant with the most gas expulsion, and therefore the most suppression of the matter power spectrum relative to a dark-matter-only simulation, provides a good description of how much gas is expelled and how far it extends; the enhanced gas depletion is achieved by more powerful but less frequent AGN outbursts. Joint kSZ, X-ray, and lensing measurements form a consistent picture of gas expulsion beyond several R 500 , implying a more suppressed matter power spectrum than predicted by most recent simulations. Complementary observables (e.g., thermal Sunyaev–Zel’dovich effect and fast radio bursts) and next-generation simulations are critical to understanding the physical mechanism behind this extreme gas expulsion and mapping its impact on the large-scale matter distribution.

Aerial-image enables diagrams and animation to be inserted in motion pictures

Aerial-image unit makes it possible to insert diagrams and animation into live motion pictures, and also lift an element from a confusing background by suppressing general details. The unit includes a combination of two separate lens systems, the camera-projector system and the field lens system.

X-ray film holder permits single continuous picture of tubing joint

X ray technique produces a clear continuous picture of a welded brazed tubing joint on a single film with one exposure. A stationary X ray source located in the plane of the joint to be inspected, a means of rotating the tube, and a unique internal film holder and positioning fixture are used.
