Aeroacoustic research: An Army perspective

A short perspective of the Army aeroacoustic research program is presented that emphasizes rotary wing, aerodynamically generated noise. Exciting breakthroughs in experimental techniques and facilities are reviewed which are helping build a detailed understanding of helicopter external noise. Army and joint Army/NASA supported research programs in acoustics which promise to reduce the noise of future helicopters without severe performance penalties are included.

Structural dynamics technology research in NASA: Perspective on future needs

The perspective of a NASA ad hoc study group on future research needs in structural dynamics within the aerospace industry is presented. The common aspects of the design process across the industry are identified and the role of structural dynamics is established through a discussion of various design considerations having their basis in structural dynamics. The specific structural dynamics issues involved are identified and assessed as to their current technological status and trends. Projections of future requirements based on this assessment are made and areas of research to meet them are identified.

The solid state remote power controller - Its status, use and perspective

Remote power controllers (RPCs) are solid state devices that combine in one unit the capability to perform all the needed functions of load switching, overload protection, and a direct indication of whether the load is on or off. They provide total system protection of equipment and wires. RPCs are designed to be located near the load and communicate control and status information remotely via low level signals of a few milliwatts. The design and operation of the RPC are considered, taking into account the operation of an RPC, the RPC power switch and drive circuits, control and trip circuits, fail-safe devices, and RPC overcurrent protection. Attention is given to the RPC development status, RPC applications, and RPC perspectives.

Life from a plantary perspective: Fundamental issues in global ecology

Twenty-three scientists from diverse disciplines met for one week at the University of California, Santa Barbara to discuss life from a planetary perspective. The scientists represented the major disciplines concerned with the Earth's biota, oceans, atmosphere and sediments, including geochemistry, atmospheric chemistry, chemical oceanography, limnology, forestry, terrestrial ecology, microbiology, biophysics, geography and remote sensing as well as mathematics. These twenty-three scientists met to discuss whether there was, at this time, a set of scientific issues concerning life and the entire Earth as a single unit, to set down the major tractable issues, and to suggest a set of activities that would promote the study of the issues identified. Their conclusions are summarized.

Prediction and quickening in perspective flight displays for curved landing approaches

In an empirical test of various prediction and quickening display algorithms, 18 professional pilot-subjects made four curved-path landing approaches in a GAT-2 simulator using each of 18 dynamically different display configurations in a within-subject design. Results indicate that second- and third-order predictor displays provide the best lateral performance. Intermediate levels of prediction and quickening provide best vertical control. Prediction quickening algorithms of increasing computational order significantly reduce aileron, rudder, and elevator control responses, reflecting successive reductions in cockpit work load. Whereas conventional crosspointer displays are not adequate for curved landing approaches, perspective displays with predictors and some vertical dimension quickening are highly effective.

Technical writing in America: A historical perspective

The standard distinction between poetic and referential language, the gulf between science and the humanities, and the distress many teachers of English feel when faced for the first time with the prospect of teaching technical writing are discussed. In the introduction of many technical writing textbooks. Technical communication is divorced from other forms of linguistic experience by making language limiting and reductive rather than creative and expansive. The emphasis on technical/scientific writing as radically different had blinded people to those traits it has in common with all species of composition and has led to a neglect of research, on fundamental rhetorical issues. A complete rhetorical theory of technical discourse should include information about the attitudes and motives of writers, the situations which motivate (or coerce) them to write, definitive features of technical style and form, interrelationship of expression and creativity, and functions of communication in shaping and preserving scientific networds and institutions. The previous areas should be explored with respect to contemporary practice and within an historical perspective.

Experimental evaluation of a perspective tunnel display for three-dimensional helicopter approaches

A computer-generated perspective tunnel display for a steep and strongly curved three-dimensional helicopter approach is studied. The necessary control variables for following a curved trajectory are analyzed, the effectiveness of superimposed predictor symbology is investigated, and a suitable predictor law is formulated. The theoretical considerations are validated by an extensive fixed-base simulator program. The tunnel display with a superimposed predictor symbol is shown to outperform conventional-type displays in its abilities to follow a curved trajectory in the presence of gust disturbances, to enter the trajectory from an unknown position outside this trajectory, as well as to monitor automatic approaches. The feasibility of the tunnel display for operation in actual flight has been demonstrated in an exploratory flight test.

A perspective of power management for large space platforms

NASA and military applications for high power spacecraft are presently being planned. A perspective of autonomous power management for low earth orbit large space platforms is presented. A multichannel 250 kWe utility-type power subsystem is used as a baseline system. The need for automation is reviewed, based on power subsystem complexity, survivability requirements, and cost benefits. On-board versus ground management is discussed with respect to these needs. In addition, the utilization of autonomous power management to enable technology readiness of large complex power subsystems is described. Recommendations are made for further technology thrusts.

Perspectives on the mixing of a row of jets with a confined crossflow

An interactive computer code, written for a microcomputer, is presented which displays 2-D and 3-D oblique plots of the temperature distribution downstream of jets mixing with a confined crossflow, for either single-side or opposed jet injection. Temperature profiles calculated with this routine are presented to show the effects of flow and geometric variables on the mixing. Examples are shown to illustrate the different perspectives on the mixing available by exercising various view options. In addition, the program is used to calculate profiles for opposed rows of jets with their centerlines in-line, by assuming that the confining effect of an opposite wall is equivalent to that of a plane of symmetry between opposed jets.

Calderas - A planetary perspective

It is pointed out that volcanoes are morphological expressions of magma composition, eruption processes, and regional tectonics. Thus, the lack of unambiguous silicic volcanoes and pyroclastic flows on Mars implies that compared to earth, its crust is deficient in volatiles and/or the planet lacks a thick granitic crust. Such deductions are examples of comparative planetology, in which knowledge of landforms and processes on one planet are utilized to interpret features and histories on others. In the present study calderas are considered in a comparative planetology context to provide perspective for students who investigate only terrestrial calderas and to search for broadscale relationships between calderas and planetary characteristics. Attention is given to terrestrial calderas, lunar calderas, Martian calderas, calderas on Jupiter's satellite Io, and calderas on Venus. A planetary definition of calderas is proposed.

Perspectives on energy storage wheels for space station application

Several of the issues of the workshop are addressed from the perspective of a potential Space Station developer and energy wheel user. Systems' considerations are emphasized rather than component technology. The potential of energy storage wheel (ESW) concept is discussed. The current status of the technology base is described. Justification for advanced technology development is also discussed. The study concludes that energy storage in wheels is an attractive concept for immediate technology development and future Space Station application.

Experimental investigation of a variable speed constant frequency electric generating system from a utility perspective

As efforts are accelerated to improve the overall capability and performance of wind electric systems, increased attention to variable speed configurations has developed. A number of potentially viable configurations have emerged. Various attributes of variable speed systems need to be carefully tested to evaluate their performance from the utility points of view. With this purpose, the NASA experimental variable speed constant frequency (VSCF) system has been tested. In order to determine the usefulness of these systems in utility applications, tests are required to resolve issues fundamental to electric utility systems. Legitimate questions exist regarding how variable speed generators will influence the performance of electric utility systems; therefore, tests from a utility perspective, have been performed on the VSCF system and an induction generator at an operating power level of 30 kW on a system rated at 200 kVA and 0.8 power factor.

Aeolian geomorphology from the global perspective

Any planet or satellite having a dynamic atmosphere and a solid surface has the potential for experiencing aeolian (wind) processes. A survey of the Solar System shows at least four planetary objects which potentially meet these criteria: Earth, Mars, Venus, and possibly Titan, the largest satellite of Saturn. While the basic process is the same among these four objects, the movement of particles by the atmosphere, the aeolian environment is drastically different. It ranges from the hot (730 K), dense atmosphere of Venus to the extremely cold desert (218 K) environment of Mars where the atmospheric surface pressure is only approximately 7.5 mb. In considering aeolian processes in the planetary perspective, all three terrestrial planets share some common areas of attention for research, especially in regard to wind erosion and dust storms. Relevant properties of planetary objects potentially subject to aeolian processes are given in tabular form.

Satellites of Saturn - Geological perspective

The Voyager encounters have added the satellites of Saturn to those planetary bodies for which geological studies are possible. These satellites are surprisingly heterogeneous, in spite of their apparently common composition of more than half water ice. All are more or less heavily cratered, but most also show clear evidence of substantial endogenic modification and resurfacing during the first few hundred million years of their existence. In the case of Enceladus, this internal activity has been most dramatic and may have persisted into the past billion years of solar-system history. Iapetus also remains a major mystery with its still unexplained hemispheric dichotomy, for which both external and internal causes have been suggested. The current knowledge of the satellites is reviewed from a geologic perspective, using primarily Voyager imaging data. Emphasis is placed on the six larger bodies (except Titan): Rhea, Iapetus, Dione, Tethys, Enceladus, and Mimas.

A perspective on the status of measurement of atmospheric turbulence in the US

A perspective on status of measurement of atmospheric turbulence is presented. Details are given for turbulence characteristics measured in four distinct meteorological conditions. The emphasis is on identifying appropriate values of L, the integral scale value in the von Karman expression. On-going activity to measure spanwise gradients of turbulence at low altitudes is described. A resume of the NASA VGH program is given, as well as on-going utilization of flight recorder data on wide-body transports to reconstruct special turbulence encounters. Reference is made to some other activities regarding sensing, measurement, modeling, and alleviation.

To speak or not to speak - A multiple resource perspective

The desirability of employing speech response in a dynamic dual task situation was discussed from a multiple resource perspective. A secondary task technique was employed to examine the time-sharing performance of five dual tasks with various degrees of resource overlap according to the structure-specific resource model of Wickens (1980). The primary task was a visual/manual tracking task which required spatial processing. The secondary task was either another tracking task or a spatial transformation task with one of four input (visual or auditory) and output (manual or speech) configurations. The results show that the dual task performance was best when the primary tracking task was paired with the visual/speech transformation task. This finding was explained by an interaction of the stimulus-central processing-response compatibility of the transformation task and the degree of resource competition between the time-shared tasks. Implications on the utility of speech response were discussed.
