MgO(111) Nanocatalyst for Biomass Conversion: A Study of Carbon Coating Effects on Catalyst Faceting and Performance

Solid base metal oxide catalysts such as MgO offer utility in a wide variety of syntheses from pharmaceuticals to fuels. The (111) facet of MgO shows enhanced, unique properties relative to the other facets. Carbon coatings have emerged as a promising modification to impart metal oxide catalyst stability. Here, we report the synthesis, characterization, and catalytic properties of commercial MgO, MgO(111), and carbon coated derivatives thereof for 2-pentanone condensation. The dimer and trimer products of this reaction can be used as precursors for biofuels upon oxygen removal and thus have relevance in environmental sustainability. Additionally, MgO(111) maintained impressive selectivity towards the dimer product after carbon coating, whereas the other catalysts experienced a decrease in conversion and selectivity as a consequence of the carbon coating. Our findings highlight the catalytic efficacy of MgO(111), provide insight into carbon coating for catalyst stability, and pave the way for continued mechanistic investigations.

Noise analysis for the Sorkin and Peres tests performed on a quantum computer

We use quantum computers to test the foundations of quantum mechanics through quantum algorithms that implement some of the experimental tests as the basis of the theory's postulates. These algorithms can be used as a test of the physical theory under the premise of a perfect hardware or as a test of the hardware under the premise that quantum theory is correct. In this paper, we show how the algorithms can be used to test the efficacy of a quantum computer in obeying the postulates of quantum mechanics. We study the effect of different types of errors on the results of experimental tests of the postulates. A salient feature of this error analysis is that it is deeply rooted in the fundamentals of quantum mechanics as it highlights how systematic errors affect the quantumness of the quantum computer.

Autothermal Chemical Looping Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Ethane: Redox Catalyst Performance, Longevity, and Process Analysis

Energy-efficient upgrading of stranded ethane from shale gas to olefins holds the promise of increasing the supply of useful chemical feedstocks while reducing flaring-based CO 2 emissions. Previously, we reported a modular ethane-to-liquids (M-ETL) system based on a chemical looping oxidative dehydrogenation (CL-ODH) scheme. In this article, we present long-term (>1200 h) results of Li 2 CO 3 -promoted La 0.8 Sr 0.2 FeO 3 corresponding to ~4125 CL-ODH cycles in a large laboratory-scale packed bed reactor. Temperature monitoring along the bed length confirmed the exothermicity of both the oxidative dehydrogenation and regeneration steps, enabling an autothermal operation. Product gas analysis indicated that the redox catalyst maintains a high C 2+ selectivity (~90%) and ethane conversion (~67%) at 735 °C after continuous cycling of >1000 h. As a result, product distributions and heats of reactions were used to update our M-ETL process model for revised techno-economic analysis, demonstrating that the current system is economically viable with relatively low required selling prices across a wide range of operating scenarios.
