Measurement of the e + e − → p p ¯ π 0 cross section at s = 2.1000 − 3.0800 GeV

The process e + e − → p p ¯ π 0 is studied at 20 center-of-mass energies ranging from 2.1000 to 3.0800 GeV using 636.8 pb − 1 of data collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider. The Born cross sections for e + e − → p p ¯ π 0 are measured with high precision. Since the lowest center-of-mass energy, 2.1000 GeV, is less than 90 MeV above the p p ¯ π 0 energy threshold, we can probe the threshold behavior for this reaction. However, no anomalous threshold enhancement is found in the cross sections for e + e − → p p ¯ π 0 . Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Angle-resolved polarized Raman study of layered b-As x P x-1 alloys: Identification of As-P vibrational modes

In this study, the polarization-resolved Raman spectra of b-As x P x-1 flakes with varying arsenic concentration (x = 0, 0.4, and 0.8) are systematically investigated. A clear polarization dependence is observed in the Raman intensity of all the P-P, As-P, and As-As modes and confirmed by the first-principles calculations. The observed angle-dependence can be related to the structure of the Raman tensors of each peak. In particular, the Raman intensities corresponding to As-P vibration modes are studied in detail. The out of plane As-P mode ($A$$^{1}_{g}$) is clearly identified, but the butterfly-shaped behavior observed in the polar plot around 350 cm -1 is interpreted as the combination of the two in-plane vibrations, one along the armchair and the other along the zigzag direction. This work allows unambiguous assignment of the $A$$^{1}_{g}$, B 2g , and $A$$^{2}_{g}$ modes of the As-P vibrational modes and the importance of the consideration of the superposition of the in-plane B 2g and $A$$^{2}_{g}$ modes. Such study can be utilized to further characterize the anisotropic structural properties and analyze the local distribution of the As and P in b-As x P x-1 alloys which will play key roles in electronic and optical properties. Furthermore, this methodology can be further extended to alloyed two-dimensional material systems with in-plane anisotropy in general.

Study of charged particle production at high p T using event topology in pp, p–Pb and Pb–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02$ TeV

This letter reports measurements which characterize the underlying event associated with hard scatterings at mid-pseudorapidity (|$η$| < 0.8) in pp, p–Pb and Pb–Pb collisions at centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair, $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02$ TeV. The measurements are performed with ALICE at the LHC. Different multiplicity classes are defined based on the event activity measured at forward rapidities. The hard scatterings are identified by the leading particle defined as the charged particle with the largest transverse momentum ($p_{T}$) in the collision and having 8 < $p_{T}$ < 15 GeV/c. The $p_{T}$ spectra of associated particles (0.5 < $p_{T}$ < 6 GeV/c) are measured in different azimuthal regions defined with respect to the leading particle direction: toward, transverse, and away. The associated charged particle yields in the transverse region are subtracted from those of the away and toward regions. The remaining jet-like yields are reported as a function of the multiplicity measured in the transverse region. The measurements show a suppression of the jet-like yield in the away region and an enhancement of high-$p_{T}$ associated particles in the toward region in central Pb–Pb collisions, as compared to minimum-bias pp collisions. These observations are consistent with previous measurements that used two-particle correlations, and with an interpretation in terms of parton energy loss in a high-density quark gluon plasma. These yield modifications vanish in peripheral Pb–Pb collisions and are not observed in either high-multiplicity pp or p–Pb collisions.

Bacteria export alarmone synthetases that produce (p)ppApp and (p)ppGpp

Guanosine penta- and tetraphosphate [(p)ppGpp] and their adenosine analogs [(p)ppApp] are bacterial second messengers known as alarmones. Members of the RelA-SpoT homolog (RSH) family synthesize (p)ppGpp to mediate the stringent response during nutrient starvation, whereas (p)ppApp synthetases have been identified as bactericidal toxins in diverse contexts including type VI secretion systems, toxin-antitoxin modules, and phages. Although alarmone synthesis has traditionally been viewed as a cytoplasmic process, early studies in Streptomyces suggested the existence of secreted alarmone synthetases. Here, we identify SaEAS, an exported alarmone synthetase (EAS) from Streptomyces albidoflavus, as the long-mysterious source of extracellular alarmone synthetase activity in Streptomyces. SaEAS produces both (p)ppGpp and (p)ppApp at rates exceeding 100,000 molecules per minute and has kinetic properties adapted to low substrate environments. A broader bioinformatic survey reveals ~600 EASs linked to a range of specialized bacterial secretion systems. Characterization of two additional EASs, VpEAS from Vibrio parahaemolyticus and AaEAS from Amycolatopsis azurea, shows that both produce (p)ppGpp exclusively and inhibit bacterial growth when localized to the cytoplasm. These findings challenge the longstanding view of (p)ppGpp as strictly pro-survival and unveil a diverse family of secreted RSH enzymes with potential roles in interbacterial antagonism and environmental signaling.

α Irradiation Response on the Electronic Transport Properties of p -B 12 P 2

B 12 P 2 , a wide bandgap semiconductor, has been previously reported to self-heal from high-energy electron bombardment as determined from transmission electron microscopy. However, the effect of irradiation on the electronic transport properties of B 12 P 2 has not been studied. We report electrical transport measurements on B 12 P 2 after α irradiation. The temperature-dependent Hall effect was measured on p-type B 12 P 2 after successive α irradiation from 210 Po over a fluence range of 1 × 10 11 –1 × 10 13 α/cm 2 to test for self-healing of B 12 P 2 to α bombardment. Prior to irradiation, B 12 P 2 displayed electrical transport characteristics of both hopping and impurity/defect band conduction due to background impurities and growth-induced defects. Fluences of 5 × 10 12 α/cm 2 or greater caused a decrease in the hole mobility and an increase in defect band conduction, suggesting defect accumulation in B 12 P 2 .

Investigation of vertical GaN-on-GaN p – n diode with regrown p -GaN for operation in Venus and other extreme environments

This Letter reports the performance of vertical GaN-on-GaN p–n diodes with etch-then-regrown p-GaN after exposure to a simulated Venus environment (460 °C, ∼94 bar, containing CO2/N2/SO2 etc., atmosphere) for over 10 days, and compared them to the performance of GaN p–n diodes without the etch-then-regrow process. After the above-mentioned Venus test, temperature-dependent I–V and microscopy investigation were conducted to study the robustness of etch-then-regrow p-GaN and vertical GaN p–n diodes under harsh environments and operation up to 500 °C. p-electrode degradation is found to be the main issue of the device's performance. This is the highest temperature at which such characterization has been conducted for vertical GaN p–n diodes, therefore establishing a critical reference for the development of p-GaN regrown and vertical GaN-based electronics for extreme environments.

Inhomogeneous magnetic ordered state and evolution of magnetic fluctuations in Sr⁢(Co 1–x ⁢Ni x ) 2 ⁢P 2 revealed by 31 P NMR

SrCo 2 ⁢P 2 with a tetragonal structure is known to be a Stoner-enhanced Pauli paramagnetic metal being nearly ferromagnetic. Recently J. Schmidt et al. [Phys. Rev. B 108, 174415 (2023)] reported that a ferromagnetic ordered state is actually induced by a small Ni substitution for Co of x = 0.02 in Sr⁢(Co 1–x ⁢Ni x ) 2 ⁢P 2 where an antiferromagnetic ordered phase also appears by further Ni substitution with x = 0.06–0.35. Here, in this work, using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements on 31 P nuclei, we have investigated how the magnetic properties change by the Ni substitution in Sr⁢(Co 1–x ⁢Ni x ) 2 ⁢P 2 from a microscopic point of view, especially focusing on the evolution of magnetic fluctuations with the Ni substitution and the characterization of the magnetically ordered states. The temperature dependencies of the 31 P spin-lattice relaxation rate divided by temperature (1/T 1 ⁢T) and Knight shift (K) for SrCo 2 ⁢P 2 are reasonably explained by a model where a double-peak structure for the density of states near the Fermi energy is assumed. Based on a Korringa ratio analysis using the T 1 and K data, ferromagnetic spin fluctuations are found to dominate in the ferromagnetic Sr⁢(Co 1–x ⁢Ni x ) 2 ⁢P 2 as well as the antiferromagnets where no clear antiferromagnetic fluctuations are observed. We also found the distribution of the ordered Co moments in the magnetically ordered states from the analysis of the 31 P-NMR spectra exhibiting a characteristic rectangular-like shape.

Measurement of Transverse Spin Dependent Azimuthal Correlations of Charged Pion(s) in $p^{\uparrow} p$ Collisions at $\sqrt s = 200$ GeV at STAR

At the leading twist, the transversity distribution function, h^{q}_{1}(x) h 1 q ( x ) , where x x is the longitudinal momentum fraction of the proton carried by quark q q , encodes the transverse spin structure of the nucleon. Extraction of it is difficult because of its chiral-odd nature. In transversely polarized proton-proton collisions ( p^\uparrow p p ↑ p ), h_{1}^{q}(x) h 1 q ( x ) can be coupled with another chiral-odd partner, a spin-dependent fragmentation function (FF). The resulting asymmetries in hadron(s) azimuthal correlations directly probe h_{1}^{q}(x) h 1 q ( x ) . We report the measurement of correlation asymmetries for charged pion(s) in p^\uparrow p p ↑ p , through the Collins and the Interference FF channel.

The triphosphate dodecahydrate of cobalt and sodium CoNa 3 P 3 O 10 ·12H 2 O was prepared by the ion exchange resin process. Its structure was studied by X-ray diffraction and determined in the monoclinic space group P12 1 /c1 with the unit-cell parameters a = 14.6650(5) Å, b=9.1916(3) Å, c = 15.0239(5) Å,β =90.2210(10)°, Z = 4 and V = 2025.13(12) Å 3 . The thermal dehydration of this compound was performed, leading to an anhydrous new form, CoNa 3 P 3 O 10 , which was characterized by X-ray diffraction. The obtained CoNa 3 P 3 O 10 crystallized in monoclinic space group P21/n with the unit-cell parameters a=15,3774 Å, b=7,6988 A°, c=14,2832A°, β=92,9115°. The characteristic IR wavenumbers of the P 3 O 10 5- ions observed in the vibrational spectra were calculated using isotopic substitutions, which confirms the existence of these groups in the studied compound. A comparison between the IR and Raman wavenumbers of CoNa 3 P 3 O 10 ·12H 2 O, CoNa 3 P 3 O 10 and Na 5 P 3 O 10 ·12H 2 was performed. A kinetic study was also made for CoNa 3 P 3 O 10 ·12H 2 O.

Measurement of the fraction of jet longitudinal momentum carried by Λ c + baryons in p p collisions

Recent measurements of charm-baryon production in hadronic collisions have questioned the universality of charm-quark fragmentation across different collision systems. In this work the fragmentation of charm quarks into charm baryons is probed, by presenting the first measurement of the longitudinal jet momentum fraction carried by Λ c + baryons, z ∥ ch , in hadronic collisions. The results are obtained in proton-proton ( p p ) collisions at s = 13 TeV at the LHC, with Λ c + baryons and charged (track-based) jets reconstructed in the transverse momentum intervals of 3 ≤ p T Λ c + < 15 GeV / c and 7 ≤ p T jet ch < 15 GeV / c , respectively. The z ∥ ch distribution is compared to a measurement of D 0 -tagged charged jets in p p collisions as well as to 8 simulations. The data hints that the fragmentation of charm quarks into charm baryons is softer with respect to charm mesons, in the measured kinematic interval, as predicted by hadronization models which include color correlations beyond leading-color in the string formation. © 2024 CERN, for the ALICE Collaboration 2024 CERN

Evolution of magnetic surfboards and spin glass behavior in (Fe 1- p Ga p ) 2 TiO 5

The unusual anisotropy of the spin glass (SG) transition in the pseudobrookite system Fe 2 TiO 5 has been interpreted as arising from an induced, van der Waals-like, interaction among magnetic clusters. Here we present susceptibility ($\chi$) and specific heat data ($C$) for Fe 2 TiO 5 diluted with non-magnetic Ga, (Fe 1- p Ga p ) 2 TiO 5 , for disorder parameter $p$ = 0, 0.11, and 0.42, and elastic neutron scattering data for $p$ = 0.20. A uniform suppression of ${T_g}$ is observed upon increasing $p$, along with a value of $\chi \left( {{T_g}} \right)$ that increases as $T_g$ decreases, i.e. $d\chi ({T_g})/d{T_g} < 0$ We also observe $C\left( T \right) \propto {T^2}$ in the low temperature limit. In conclusion, the observed behavior places (Fe 1- p Ga p ) 2 TiO 5 in the category of a strongly geometrically frustrated SG.

eYGFPuv-Assisted Transgenic Selection in Populus deltoides WV94 and Multiplex Genome Editing in Protoplasts of P. trichocarpa × P. deltoides Clone ‘52-225’

Although CRISPR/Cas-based genome editing has been widely used for plant genetic engineering, its application in the genetic improvement of trees has been limited, partly because of challenges in Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. As an important model for poplar genomics and biotechnology research, eastern cottonwood (Populus deltoides) clone WV94 can be transformed by A. tumefaciens, but several challenges remain unresolved, including the relatively low transformation efficiency and the relatively high rate of false positives from antibiotic-based selection of transgenic events. Moreover, the efficacy of CRISPR-Cas system has not been explored in P. deltoides yet. Here, we first optimized the protocol for Agrobacterium-mediated stable transformation in P. deltoides WV94 and applied a UV-visible reporter called eYGFPuv in transformation. Our results showed that the transgenic events in the early stage of transformation could be easily recognized and counted in a non-invasive manner to narrow down the number of regenerated shoots for further molecular characterization (at the DNA or mRNA level) using PCR. We found that approximately 8.7% of explants regenerated transgenic shoots with green fluorescence within two months. Next, we examined the efficacy of multiplex CRISPR-based genome editing in the protoplasts derived from P. deltoides WV94 and hybrid poplar clone ‘52-225’ (P. trichocarpa × P. deltoides clone ‘52-225’). The two constructs expressing the Trex2-Cas9 system resulted in mutation efficiency ranging from 31% to 57% in hybrid poplar clone 52-225, but no editing events were observed in P. deltoides WV94 transient assay. The eYGFPuv-assisted plant transformation and genome editing approach demonstrated in this study has great potential for accelerating the genome editing-based breeding process in poplar and other non-model plants species and point to the need for additional CRISPR work in P. deltoides.

Production of b b ¯ at forward rapidity in p + p collisions at s = 510 GeV

The cross section of bottom quark-antiquark ( b b ¯ ) production in p + p collisions at s = 510 GeV is measured with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The results are based on the yield of high mass, like-sign muon pairs measured within the PHENIX muon arm acceptance ( 1.2 < | y | < 2.2 ). The b b ¯ signal is extracted from like-sign dimuons by utilizing the unique properties of neutral B meson oscillation. We report a differential cross section of d σ b b ¯ → μ ± μ ± / d y = 0.16 ± 0.01 ( stat ) ± 0.02 ( syst ) ± 0.02 ( global ) nb for like-sign muons in the rapidity and p T ranges 1.2 < | y | < 2.2 and p T > 1 GeV / c , and dimuon mass of 5 – 10 GeV / c 2 . The extrapolated total cross section at this energy for b b ¯ production is 13.1 ± 0.6 ( stat ) ± 1.5 ( syst ) ± 2.7 ( global ) μ b . The total cross section is compared to a perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculation and is consistent within uncertainties. The azimuthal opening angle between muon pairs from b b ¯ decays and their p T distributions are compared to distributions generated using ps pythia 6, which includes next-to-leading order processes. The azimuthal correlations and pair p T distribution are not very well described by pythia calculations, but are still consistent within uncertainties. Flavor creation and flavor excitation subprocesses are favored over gluon splitting.

Measurements of $\pi ^\pm $, $K^\pm $, p and $\bar{p}$ spectra in $^7$Be+$^9$Be collisions at beam momenta from 19A to 150A ${\mathrm{Ge} \mathrm{V}}\!/\!c$ with the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS

The NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) studies the onset of deconfinement in hadron matter by a scan of particle production in collisions of nuclei with various sizes at a set of energies covering the SPS energy range. This paper presents results on inclusive double-differential spectra, transverse momentum and rapidity distributions and mean multiplicities of $\pi^, \pm K^\pm$ p and $\bar{p}$ produced in the 20% most central Be+$^9$ Be collisions at beam momenta of 19A, 30A, 40A, 75A and 150A ${\mathrm{Ge} \mathrm{V}}\!/\!c$. The energy dependence of the $K^\pm/ \pi^\pm$ ratios as well as of inverse slope parameters of the $K^\pm$ transverse mass distributions are close to those found in inelastic $p+p$ reactions. The new results are compared to the world data on $p+p and Pb+Pb collisions as well as to predictions of the Epos , U r qmd , Ampt , Phsd and Smash models.

FeSi 4 P 4 and CoSi 3 P 3 : Hidden Gems of Ternary Tetrel Pnictides with Outstanding Nonlinear Optical Properties

Metal silicon phosphides have shown promise as nonlinear optical materials. To be practically useful and cheap, earth-abundant 3d transition metals are preferred over their scarcer and more expensive 4d and 5d counterparts. Here, we developed a synthetic method to produce polycrystalline bulk powders and millimeter-sized single crystals of ternary compounds FeSi 4 P 4 and CoSi 3 P 3 . Both studied compounds have noncentrosymmetric and chiral crystal structures with ordered Si/P arrangements as was confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and solid-state NMR. Despite the presence of the transition metal, FeSi 4 P 4 and CoSi 3 P 3 are semiconductors with direct band gaps of 1.3 and 1.6 eV, respectively, indicating low-spin d 6 electronic configuration for octahedral Fe 2+ and Co 3+ . Relative to reported sulfide materials, FeSi 4 P 4 and CoSi 3 P 3 small band gap semiconductors demonstrate an outstanding combination of second-harmonic generation (SHG) activity and laser damage threshold (LDT). Both studied materials are phase-matchable with a 2.09 μm laser and not only exhibit 2.5–3.0 times stronger SHG signal than that of the state-of-the-art AgGaS 2 standard but also demonstrate an LDT response of 2.3–2.5 times higher than that of AgGaS 2 (at 1.09 μm laser with a pulse width of 10 ns)-which is unprecedented for small band gap semiconductors.

JETSCAPE framework: p+p results

The JETSCAPE framework is a modular and versatile Monte Carlo software package for the simulation of high energy nuclear collisions. In this work we present a new tune of JETSCAPE, called PP19, and validate it by comparison to jet-based measurements in p + p collisions, including inclusive single jet cross sections, jet shape observables, fragmentation functions, charged hadron cross sections, and dijet mass cross sections. These observables in p+p collisions provide the baseline for their counterparts in nuclear collisions. Quantifying the level of agreement of JETSCAPE results with p+p data is thus necessary for meaningful applications of JETSCAPE to A+A collisions. The calculations use the JETSCAPE PP19 tune, defined in this paper, based on version 1.0 of the JETSCAPE framework. For the observables discussed in this work calculations using JETSCAPE PP19 agree with data over a wide range of collision energies at a level comparable to standard Monte Carlo codes. These results demonstrate the physics capabilities of the JETSCAPE framework and provide benchmarks for JETSCAPE users.

Polarized Structure Function {sigma}LT from {pi}0 p Electroproduction Data in the Resonance Region at 0.4 GeV2 < Q2 < 1.0 GeV2

The first results on the sigma(LT') structure function in exclusive pi(0)p electroproduction at invariant masses of the final state of 1.5 GeV < W < 1.8 GeV and in the range of photon virtualities 0.4 GeV2 < Q(2) < 1.0 GeV2 were obtained from data on beam spin asymmetries and differential cross sections measured with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab. The Legendre moments determined from the sigma(LT') structure function have demonstrated sensitivity to the contributions from the nucleon resonances in the second and third resonance regions. These new data on the beam spin asymmetries in pi(0)p electroproduction extend the opportunities for the extraction of the nucleon resonance electro-excitation amplitudes in the mass range above 1.6 GeV.
