Recent Developments in the General Atomic and Molecular Electronic Structure System

A discussion of many of the recently implemented features of GAMESS (General Atomic and Molecular Electronic Structure System) and LibCChem (the C++ CPU/GPU library associated with GAMESS) is presented. These features include fragmentation methods like the fragment molecular orbital, effective fragment potential and effective fragment molecular orbital methods, hybrid MPI/OpenMP approaches to Hartree-Fock and resolution of the identity second order perturbation theory. Many new coupled cluster theory methods have been implemented in GAMESS, as have multiple levels of density functional/tight binding theory. The role of accelerators, especially graphical processing units, is discussed in the context of the new features of LibCChem, as is the associated problem of power consumption as the power of computers increases dramatically. The process by which a complex program suite like GAMESS is maintained and developed is considered. Future developments are briefly summarized.

Americium Oxalate: An Experimental and Computational Investigation of Metal–Ligand Bonding

A novel actinide-containing coordination polymer, [Am(C 2 O 4 )(H 2 O) 3 Cl] (Am-1), has been synthesized and structurally characterized. The crystallographic analysis reveals that the structure is two-dimensional and comprised of pseudo-dimeric Am 3+ nodes that are bridged by oxalate ligands to form sheets. Each metal center is nine-coordinate, forming a distorted capped square antiprism geometry with a C 1 symmetry, and features bound oxalate, aqua, and chloro ligands. The Am 3+ –ligand bonds were probed computationally using the quantum theory of atoms in molecules nd natural localized molecular orbital approaches to investigate the underlying mechanisms and hybrid atomic orbital contributions therein. The analyses indicate that the bonds within Am-1 are predominantly ionic and the 5f shell of the Am 3+ metal centers does not add a significant covalent contribution to the bonds. Further, our bonding assessment is supported by measurements on the optical properties of Am-1 using diffuse reflectance and photoluminescence spectroscopies. The position of the principal absorption band at 507 nm ( 5 L 6' ← 7 F 0' ) is notable because it is consistent with previously reported americium oxalate complexes in solution, indicating similarities in the electronic structure and ionic bonding. Compound Am-1 is an active phosphor, featuring strong bright-blue oxalate-based luminescence with no evidence of metal-centered emission.

Tuning spin-orbit coupling towards enhancing photocurrent in hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites by using mixed organic cations

The presence of the heavy elements leads to strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs), which plays an important role in the photovoltaic performance of HOIPs by changing the populations between bright and dark states. The organic cation is a critical composition and affects SOC via the interaction with the inorganic cage. In this work, we use magneto-photocurrent measurement to explore the SOC effect upon using mixed organic cations (methylammonium (MA) and formamidinium (FA)) with different dipole moments in Pb based perovskites. Magneto-photocurrent measurements showed that the internal magnetic parameter B0 is decreased from 402.41 mT to 180.18 mT and 104.58 mT with decreasing the MA/FA ratio. This provides evidence that changing the internal dipole moment by using mixed organic cations can essentially change the SOC in HOIPs. Simultaneously, the photocurrent is increased from 21.46 mA/cm 2 to 22.60 mA/cm 2 and 23.08 mA/cm 2 when the MA/FA ratio is changed from 1:0 to 0.9:0.1 and 0.7:0.3. Above all, our results indicate that the change in SOC by different organic cations can also be a factor affecting the performance of perovskite solar cells.

Monoatomic orbital-based one-dimensional topological crystalline insulator

The bulk-boundary correspondence in topological crystalline insulators (TCIs) links the topological properties of the bulk to robust observables on the edges, e.g., the existence of robust edge modes or fractional charge. In one dimension, TCIs protected by reflection symmetry have been realized in a variety of systems in which each unit cell has spatially distributed degrees of freedom (SDOF). However, these realizations exhibit sensitivity of the resulting edge modes to variations in edge termination and to the local breaking of the protective spatial symmetries by inhomogeneity. Here we demonstrate topologically protected edge states in a monoatomic, orbital-based TCI that mitigates both of these issues. By collapsing all SDOF within the unit cell to a singular point in space, we eliminate the ambiguity in unit-cell definition and hence remove a prominent source of boundary termination variability. The topological observables are also more tolerant to disorder in the orbital energies. To validate this concept, we experimentally realize a lattice of mechanical resonators where each resonator acts as an “atom” that harbors two key orbital degrees of freedom having opposite reflection parity. Finally, our measurements of this system provide direct visualization of the sp-hybridization between orbital modes that leads to a nontrivial band inversion in the bulk.

Exchange bias and quantum anomalous nomalous Hall effect in the MnBi 2 Te 4 /CrI 3 heterostructure

The layered antiferromagnetic MnBi 2 Te 4 films have been proposed to be an intrinsic quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulator with a large gap. It is crucial to open a magnetic gap of surface states. However, recent experiments have observed gapless surface states, indicating the absence of out-of-plane surface magnetism, and thus, the quantized Hall resistance can only be achieved at the magnetic field above 6 T. We propose to induce out-of-plane surface magnetism of MnBi 2 Te 4 films via the magnetic proximity with magnetic insulator CrI 3 . A strong exchange bias of ~40 meV originates from the long Cr- e g orbital tails that hybridize strongly with Te p orbitals. By stabilizing surface magnetism, the QAH effect can be realized in the MnBi 2 Te 4 /CrI 3 heterostructure. Moreover, the high–Chern number QAH state can be achieved by controlling external electric gates. Thus, the MnBi 2 Te 4 /CrI 3 heterostructure provides a promising platform to realize the electrically tunable zero-field QAH effect.

Structure and electronic tunability of acene alkylamine based layered hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites from first principles

Twelve layered hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites combining oligoacene derivatives [phenylmethylammonium (PMA), naphthylmethylammonium (NMA), anthrylmethylammonium (AMA), and tetrylmethylammonium (TMA)] and lead halides (Cl - , Br - , and I - anions) are investigated by first-principles density functional theory (DFT), showing broad, rational tunability of band gap, quantum well type, and spin-dependent energy band properties. Six compounds are known from previous syntheses and are used to devise a computational search space for likely low-energy structures. Among the six known compounds, a refined structure is identified for (NMA) 2 ⁢ PbCl 4 and a new, lower-energy structure is suggested for (AMA) 2 ⁢PbCl 4 . The DFT based search methodology is next applied to predict the likely structures for the six unknown compounds. Computationally predicted energy levels for all 12 compounds from spin-orbit coupled hybrid DFT reveal tunable type I quantum well alignments, with frontier orbitals located on the inorganic component, on the organic component, or on both, as controlled by cation and anion selection. In conclusion, several structures spontaneously break local and global inversion symmetry, causing strong spin splitting of the conduction bands [up to 0.12 eV for (PMA) 2 ⁢PbCl 4 ] and showing potential for spin-dependent transport properties and future spintronic and tunable chiroptical applications.

Mars Ascent Vehicle Hybrid PropulsionEffort

A technology development program was undertaken to determine if the benefits of hybrid rocket propulsion could be realized for a Mars Ascent Vehicle (MAV) application. Specifically, the goal of this program was to increase the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of a hybrid propulsion system such that it could be considered for a potential Mars Sample Return Campaign. Over the course of approximately five years, a new, wax-based fuel was developed, characterized and tested with Mixed Oxides of Nitrogen (from MON-3 to MON-25). Various ignition mechanisms were tested and solid hypergolic additives were evaluated for their potential to ignite the hybrid motor. Several hot-fire test campaigns were completed at both sub- and full-scale. The technology development program was born out of a JPL study documented by Shotwell and Karp that identified the Single Stage to Orbit (SSTO) hybrid propulsion system for a potential Mars Ascent Vehicle to be the lowest Gross Lift Off Mass option from the ten configurations evaluated. Benefits of the hybrid option included its predicted favorable low temperature storage and operation behavior, high performance and ability to restart (enabling the SSTO). The main disadvantage of the hybrid option was its low TRL,as it essentially started as a blank sheet design with a new fuel development. Near the end of the technology development program, a Preliminary Architecture Assessment (PAA) was completed to evaluate a single-stage hybrid propulsion system and a two-stage solid propulsion system for a potential MAV. The solid propulsion system was selected for further study in 2019, primarily because of its flight heritage. While the hybrid technology development program made many strides, there was still a list of challenges to overcome. This paper will discuss the substantial progress and remaining challenges from the technology development effort from 2015 through 2019. This includes fuel development and reformulation, sub- and full-scale testing at Space Propulsion Group, full scale testing at Parabilis, full scale testing at Whittinghill Aerospace, hypergolic additive testing at Purdue and Penn State and the evaluation of adding hypergolic additives to a full-scale grain. It also includes a discussion of the design that resulted from the Preliminary Architecture Assessment.

Electronic Origin of Delicate Antiferromagnetism in Fe 𝑥 ⁢NbS 2

Among the family of intercalated transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), Fe 𝑥 ⁢NbS 2 is found to possess unique current-induced resistive switching behaviors, tunable antiferromagnetic states, and a commensurate charge order, all of which are tied to a critical Fe doping of 𝑥 𝑐 = 1/3. However, the electronic origin of such extreme stoichiometry sensitivities remains unclear. Combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we identify and characterize a dramatic eV-scale electronic restructuring that occurs across the 𝑥𝑐. Moment-carrying Fe 3⁢𝑑 𝑧 2 electrons manifest as narrow bands within 200 meV of the Fermi level, distinct from other transition metal intercalated TMD magnets. These states strongly hybridize with itinerant electrons in the TMD layer and rapidly lose coherence above 𝑥 𝑐 due to correlation-driven effects. This sudden quasiparticle decoherence collapses the Fe-Nb hybridization, which explicitly suppresses the out-of-plane effective Fe-Fe exchange interaction, driving the transformation of the magnetic ground state from an antiferromagnetic stripe phase to a zigzag phase. Furthermore, these observations resemble the exceptional electronic and magnetic sensitivity of strongly correlated systems, and demonstrate that quantifying orbital-specific hybridization via ARPES offers an alternative pathway to evaluate effective magnetic exchange in metallic magnets, complementing inelastic neutron and resonant x-ray scattering probes.

Hybridization of Excited Interlayer Excitons with Intralayer Excitons in Transition-Metal Dichalcogenide Heterostructures: Interplay of Orbital and Structural Symmetry

Hybridization between interlayer exciton (ILX) and intralayer excitons offers a powerful route to engineer light–matter interactions in transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) heterostructures, yet the underlying mechanism and selection rules remain elusive. Here we probe exciton hybridization in MoTe2/MoSe2 heterobilayers under a tunable out-of-plane electric field and observe distinct avoided crossings in the electric-field dependent reflection spectra. We associate them with coupling between excited ILX states, including the 2p and 2s Rydberg states, and MoTe2 intralayer exciton. Supported by ab initio GW plus Bethe-Salpeter equation (GW-BSE) calculations, we identify the hybridizing states and establish optical selection rules based on the effective angular momentum of the exciton states. These findings highlight the role of excitonic binding in the observed hybridization, rather than that of simple band-mixing models, and provide a new pathway for brightening high-energy dark states.

Hybridization and deconfinement in colloidal quantum dot molecules

The structural, electronic, and optical properties of CdSe/CdS core–shell colloidal quantum dot molecules, a new class of coupled quantum dot dimers, are explored using atomistic approaches. Unlike the case of dimers grown by molecular beam epitaxy, simulated strain profile maps of free-standing colloidal dimers show negligible additional strain resulting from the attachment. Further, the electronic properties of the relaxed dimers are described within a semiempirical pseudopotential model combined with the Bethe–Salpeter equation within the static screening approximation to account for electron–hole correlations. The interplay of strain, hybridization (tunneling splitting), quantum confinement, and electron–hole binding energies on the optical properties is analyzed and discussed. The effects of the dimensions of the neck connecting the two quantum dot building blocks, as well as the shell thickness, are studied.

Dilute magnetic impurity-induced effective phonon magnetic moment in Fe-doped monolayer MoS 2

Realization of large effective phonon magnetic moment in monolayer MoS 2 has established an important route for exploring intriguing magnetic phenomena in a nonmagnetic material. The sizable coupling between the orbital transition and the circularly polarized phonon results in the large effective phonon magnetic moment. In this work, using magneto-Raman spectroscopy, we investigate substitutional doping of magnetic atoms as a tuning knob of the electronic and phononic properties of MoS 2 . We show that Fe-doping polarizes the spin of the conduction bands and introduces a localized Fe band underneath the conduction band. As a result, an additional orbital transition between the Mo 4d and Fe 3d states emerges, producing an orbital-phonon hybridized mode at 283 cm −1 . Our magnetic field dependent measurements demonstrate that this new mode carries 2.8 $\mu_{\mathrm{B}}$ effective phonon magnetic moment, which is comparable to that of the undoped MoS 2 . Moreover, even though a long-range magnetic order is absent in Fe-doped MoS 2 , the local magnetic moment of Fe modifies the nature of the spin fluctuation, producing monotonically increasing quasielastic scattering spectral weight as temperature decreases. Our results highlight two-dimensional dilute magnetic semiconductors synthesized by substitutional doping as a promising material platform to manipulate the phonon magnetic moment through orbital-phonon coupling.
