Stepwise deprotonation of truxene: structures, metal complexation, and charge-dependent optical properties

As a planar subunit of C 60 -fullerene, truxene (C 27 H 18 ) represents a highly symmetrical rigid hydrocarbon with strong blue emission. Herein, we used truxene as a model to investigate the chemical reactivity of a fullerene fragment with alkali metals. Monoanion, dianion, and trianion products with different alkali metal counterions were crystallized and fully characterized, revealing the core curvature dependence on charge and alkali metal coordination. Moreover, a proton nuclear magnetic resonance study coupled with computational analysis demonstrated that deprotonation of the aliphatic CH 2 segments introduces aromaticity in the five-membered rings. Importantly, the UV-vis absorption and photoluminescence of truxenyl anions with different charges reveal intriguing charge-dependent optical properties, implying variation of the electronic structure based on the deprotonation process. An increase in aromaticity and π-conjugation yielded a red shift in the absorption and photoluminescent spectra; in particular, large Stokes shifts were observed in the truxenyl monoanion and dianion with high emission quantum yield and time of decay. Overall, stepwise deprotonation of truxene provides the first crystallographically characterized examples of truxenyl anions with three different charges and charge-dependent optical properties, pointing to their potential applications in carbon-based functional materials.

Stability of Polyethylene Glycol-Coated Copper Nanoparticles and Their Optical Properties

Oxidation is a corrosion reaction where the corroded metal forms an oxide. Prevention of oxidation at the nanoscale is critically important to retain the physicochemical properties of metal nanoparticles. In this work, we studied the stability of polyethylene glycol (PEG) coated copper nanoparticles (PEGylated CuNPs) against oxidation. The freshly-prepared PEGylated CuNPs mainly consist of metallic Cu which are quite stable in air although their surfaces are typically covered with a few monolayers of cuprous oxide. However, they are quickly oxidized in water due to the presence of protons that facilitate oxidation of the cuprous oxide to cupric oxide. PEG with carboxylic acid terminus could slightly delay the oxidation process compared to that with thiol terminus. It was found that a solvent with reducing power such as ethanol could greatly enhance the stability of PEGylated CuNPs by preventing further oxidation of the cuprous oxide to cupric oxide and thus retain the optical properties of CuNPs. The reducing environment also assists the galvanic replacement of these PEGylated CuNPs to form hollow nanoshells; however, they consist of ultra-small particle assemblies due to the co-reduction of gold precursor during the replacement reaction. As a result, these nanoshells do not exhibit strong optical properties in the near-infrared region. This study highlights the importance of solvent effects on PEGylated nonprecious metal nanoparticles against oxidation corrosion and its applications in preserving physicochemical properties of metallic nanostructures.

Ba 6 (Cu x Z y )Sn 4 S 16 (Z = Mg, Mn, Zn, Cd, In, Bi, Sn): High Chemical Flexibility Resulting in Good Nonlinear-Optical Properties

Seven acentric sulfides Ba 6 (Cu x Z y )Sn 4 S 16 (Z = Mg, Mn, Zn, Cd, In, Bi, Sn) were grown by a high-temperature salt flux method. The crystal structures of the Ba 6 (Cu x Z y )Sn 4 S 16 (Z = Mg, Mn, Zn, Cd, In, Bi, Sn) compounds were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction with the aid of solid-state NMR spectroscopy. The Ba 6 (Cu x Z y )Sn 4 S 16 (Z = Mg, Mn, Zn, Cd, In, Bi) compounds are isostructural and crystallize in the Ba 6 Ag 4 Sn 4 S 16 structure type. The Sn-containing compound exhibits high structural similarity to Ba 6 (Cu x Z y )Sn 4 S 16 (Z = Mg, Mn, Zn, Cd, In, Bi) with the presence of an interstitial atomic position partially occupied by Sn atoms. The chemical bonding characteristics of Ba 6 (Cu 2.9 Sn 0.4 )Sn 4 S 16 were understood with electron localization function calculations coupled with crystal orbital Hamilton population calculations. The Ba–S and Cu–S interactions are dominantly ionic, but the Sn–S interactions consist of strong covalent bonding characteristics in Ba 6 (Cu 2.9 Sn 0.4 )Sn 4 S 16 . The monovalent Cu atoms, mixed with certain metals with various oxidation states, significantly shift the optical properties of the Ba 6 (Cu x Z y )Sn 4 S 16 (Z = Mg, Mn, Zn, Cd, In, Bi) compounds. This results in a good balance between the second-harmonic-generation (SHG) response and laser damage threshold (LDT). Ba 6 (Cu 1.9 Zn 1.1 )Sn 4 S 16 possesses a high SHG response and a high LDT of 2.8 × AGS and 3 × AGS, respectively. Here, a density functional theory calculation revealed that CuS 4 and SnS 4 tetrahedra significantly contribute to the SHG response in Ba 6 (Cu 2 Mg)Sn 4 S 16 , which also confirmed that CuS 4 tetrahedra are crucial for the stability and optical properties of the Ba 6 (Cu x Z y )Sn 4 S 16 (Z = Mg, Mn, Zn, Cd, In, Bi, Sn) compounds revealed by electronic structure analysis.

On the Morphology and Optical Properties of Molybdenum Disulfide Nanostructures from a Monomolecular Layer to a Fractal-Like Substructure

The impact of layer thickness on the morphology and optical properties of MoS{sub 2} nanostructures, including monomolecular layers, formed by the carrier-gas-assisted transport of sulfur vapor to the hot zone of a reactor containing metallic molybdenum and subsequent deposition on mica (muscovite) substrates is investigated. Molybdenum disulfide nanostructures of different thicknesses grown at different temperatures of gas-transport synthesis are studied by atomic-force microscopy, optical absorption spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. It is found that synthesis at temperatures of 525–600°C makes it possible to obtain monomolecular MoS{sub 2} layers containing trigonal domains and featuring direct-gap optical transitions at 1.84 eV with the formation of excitons at room temperature. Fractal-type MoS{sub 2} substructures are obtained for the first time. The frequencies of intralayer and interlayer vibrational modes E{sub 2g}{sup 1} and A{sub 1g}, respectively, in their Raman spectra (377.5 and 403.8 cm{sup –1}, respectively) differ both from the corresponding values for a monomolecular layer and the known frequencies for bulk samples. The frequency of the E{sub 2g}{sup 1} intralayer mode in these samples (377.5 cm{sup –1}) is the lowest of all previously reported.

Control of the optical properties of gum and dentin tissue of a human tooth at laser spectral lines in the range of 200 – 800 nm

A change in the optical properties of the tissue of the gums and dentin of a human tooth is experimentally investigated in vitro with the application of a 99.5 % glycerol solution. The kinetics of the total transmittance in the spectral range of 200 – 800 nm on characteristic laser lines is studied. It is shown that the effectiveness of optical clearing, expressed as a relative increase in the total transmittance, for gum tissue in the laser radiation range of 200 – 800 nm can vary significantly (by an order of magnitude). In this case, the absolute values of optical transmittance in the UV region are relatively small due to the strong absorption by the endogenous chromophores of the studied tissues, and in the visible and NIR regions, on the contrary, they are significant, which is due to the absence of strongly absorbing chromophores. The effectiveness of dentin clearing in the entire visible and NIR spectral regions is on average 25 % for 300 minutes of immersion of the sample in a 99.5 % glycerol solution. The presented results are necessary for increasing the efficiency of laser therapy and methods for optical monitoring of morphological changes in biological tissues for the purpose of early diagnosis of diseases. Effect of structural disordering on magnetic and magneto-optical properties of F e 3 Si

The electronic, magnetic, transport, and magneto-optical properties of the D0 3 and amorphous Fe 3 Si are investigated by using the first-principles calculations. A strong correlation between local magnetization and atomic arrangement is established. Here, the amorphization significantly alters the spin polarization and the magneto-optical Kerr rotation spectrum but has a little influence on anomalous Hall conductivity. Analyses in band structures and interband matrix elements provide clear insights for the understanding of these results.

Non‐Linear Optical Properties of the ( RE ) 3 CuGeS 7 Family of Compounds

Abstract Non‐linear optical materials must possess a balanced combination of laser‐induced damage threshold (LDT) and second‐harmonic generation (SHG) and be phase matchable. In our previous work, chiral and polar La 3 CuGeS 7 was identified as a promising non‐linear optical material. Herein, we report the optimization of non‐linear optical properties through replacement of La with smaller lanthanides. It is determined that Gd 3 CuGeS 7 exhibits the best combination of SHG (1.6× AgGaS 2 at 88–105 μm particle size) and LDT (3× AgGaS 2 , 89 MW/cm 2 ) and is phase matchable. Based on changes in metal‐sulfur bond lengths and angles, we further propose structural optimization through solid‐solution formation and doping.

Optical properties of cubic boron arsenide

The ultrahigh thermal conductivity of cubic boron arsenide (BAs) makes it a promising material for next-generation electronics and optoelectronics. Here, we report measured optical properties of BAs crystals, including the complex dielectric function, refractive index, and absorption coefficient in the ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared wavelength range. In this work, the data were collected at room temperature using spectroscopic ellipsometry and transmission and reflection spectroscopy. We further calculated the optical response using density functional theory and many-body perturbation theory, considering quasiparticle and excitonic corrections. The computed values for the direct and indirect bandgaps (4.25 eV and 2.07 eV) agree well with the measured results (4.12 eV and 2.02 eV). Our findings pave the way for using BAs in future electronic and optoelectronic applications that take advantage of its demonstrated ultrahigh thermal conductivity and predicted high ambipolar carrier mobility.

Optical properties and carrier localization in the layered phosphide EuCd 2 P 2

The temperature dependence of the complex optical properties of the layered phosphide material EuCd 2 P 2 have been measured over a wide frequency range above and below T N ≃ 11.5 K for light polarized in the a-b planes. At room temperature, the optical conductivity is well described by a weak free-carrier component with a Drude plasma frequency of ≃ 1100 cm –1 and a scattering rate of 1/τ D ≃ 700 cm –1 , with the onset of interband absorptions above ≃ 2000 cm –1 . Two infrared-active E u modes are observed at ≃ 89 and 239 cm –1 . As the temperature is reduced the scattering rate decreases and the low-frequency conductivity increases slightly; however, below ≃ 50 K the conductivity decreases until at the resistivity maximum at ≃ 18 K (just below 2T N ) the spectral weight associated with free carriers is transferred to a localized excitation at ≃ 500 cm –1 . Below T N , metallic behavior is recovered. Interestingly, the E u modes are largely unaffected by these changes, with only the position of the high-frequency mode showing any signs of anomalous behavior. Finally, while several scenarios are considered, the prevailing view is that the resistivity maximum and subsequent carrier localization is due to the formation of ferromagnetic domains below ≃ 2 T N that result in spin-polarized clusters due to spin-carrier coupling.

Structural and optical properties of cubic GaN on U-grooved Si (100)

Cubic GaN epitaxy on large-area U-grooved silicon (100) dies is demonstrated by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition, and its structural and optical properties are reported. Scanning electron, atomic force, and transmission electron microscopy studies reveal that cubic GaN shows no discernible threading dislocations and a low stacking fault density of 3.27 ± 0.18 × 10 4 cm –1 . Temperature-dependent photoluminescence studies reveal as-grown cubic GaN band edge emission internal quantum efficiency as 25.6% ± 0.9%. Selective etching of the low-temperature AlN buffer layer, SiO 2 sidewalls, and hexagonal-phase GaN is demonstrated, which increases the cubic GaN band edge emission internal quantum efficiency to 31.6% ± 0.8%. This increase is attributed to the decrease in the radiative recombination lifetime via the removal of defective hexagonal-phase GaN. Altogether, cubic GaN on U-grooved silicon with high structural and optical quality is reported, promising its suitability for next-generation devices.

Gold nanoparticles in reverse micellar solutions: preparation, optical properties, and dimensional characteristics

Gold nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized via chemical (Chem) and radiation-chemical (RadChem) methods for the reduction of ions in reverse micellar solutions (RMS). The gold NP have for the first time been obtained by self-organization (Self-assembly), and their optical properties were evaluated. The formation of Au NP (Chem, RadChem, and Self) was confirmed by the transmission electron microscopy. The spectral characteristics of optical absorption of gold NP in the RMS depend on the solubilization coefficient ω, the salt concentration, and the methods for initiating the primary steps of reduction reactions responsible for the formation of nanoscale structures.

Study of nonlinear optical properties of TiO{sub 2} – polystyrene nanocomposite films

We consider an ex-situ prepared TiO{sub 2} − polystyrene (TiO{sub 2} − PS) nanocomposite, with different concentration of TiO{sub 2} nanoparticles (NPs), deposited by the spin-coating method on quartz substrates. Nonlinear optical properties of the TiO{sub 2} − PS nanocomposite films are studied using the Z-scan technique. Structural properties of the films are investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. The optical band gap energy of the TiO{sub 2} − PS films are determined from the optical absorption spectra. The relation between the optical nonlinearities and the bandgap energy, as a microscopic electronic property of the semiconductor nanocomposite, is established. It is shown that an increase in the content of TiO{sub 2} NPs in the nanocomposite films results in bandgap narrowing and concomitant enhancement of optical nonlinearities. It is proposed that bandgap narrowing and enhancement of optical nonlinearities can be ascribed to the introduction of mid-gap states as a result of the formation of surface defects in TiO{sub 2} NPs. The results of this work indicate that incorporation of TiO{sub 2} NPs in the PS polymeric matrix can be a new way for bandgap narrowing of TiO{sub 2} NPs toward the visible light region, which is of great interest for their application in this part of the spectrum. Furthermore, enhancement of the optical nonlinearities of the spin-coated TiO{sub 2} − PS films by increasing the TiO{sub 2} NP content can open up new avenues for their use as nonlinear optical films in photonics applications. Nonlinear optical properties of lanthanum titanate glasses prepared by levitation melting

Lanthanum titanate glasses (17 La 2 O 3 -83 TiO 2 ) are fabricated via aerodynamic levitation melting. Here, nonlinear refraction and absorption were measured with the Z scan technique using ps optical pulses at 532 nm wavelength with peak intensities in the range of 0.25–2.5 GW/cm 2 . The two-photon absorption coefficient (β) and the effective nonlinear refraction coefficient ($n^{eff}_{2}$) are found to be, respectively, 2.19 cm/GW and 152 × 10 -16 cm 2 /W (85 × 10 -13 esu). The Raman gain is measured to be 106 × 10 -11 cm/W. The nonlinearity strength is found to be nearly 60 times larger in lanthanum titanate glasses relative to silica.

Thermo-optic properties of silicon-rich silicon nitride for on-chip applications

We demonstrate the thermo-optic properties of silicon-rich silicon nitride (SRN) films deposited using plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD). Shifts in the spectral response of Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZIs) as a function of temperature were used to characterize the thermo-optic coefficients of silicon nitride films with varying silicon contents. A clear relation is demonstrated between the silicon content and the exhibited thermo-optic coefficient in silicon nitride films, with the highest achievable coefficient being as high as (1.65±0.08) ×10 −4 K -1 . Furthermore, we realize an SRN multi-mode interferometer (MMI) based thermo-optic switch with over 20 dB extinction ratio and total power consumption for two-port switching of 50 mW.

Optical Properties of Planar and Annular Ternary Superconducting Photonic Crystals in Near-Zero-Permittivity Operation Range

Optical properties of ternary superconducting planar/annular photonic crystals composed of a high-temperature superconductor and two dielectrics were theoretically investigated based on transfer matrix methods in Cartesian and cylindrical coordinates. Electrodynamics of superconductor were modelled using two-fluid model. It is of interest to observe that, for a planar structure, there exists an additional high reflectance band termed as superpolariton gap near the superconducting threshold wavelength for the TM wave at oblique incidences and some reflection dips also were found in the TM reflectance. However, the superpolariton gap and reflection dips were seen for an annular geometry at higher order azimuthal number. For an annular structure, the size of superpolariton gap can be controlled by simply adjusting the starting radius. Moreover, the superpolariton gap in both structures strongly depends on the operating temperature, different combinations of dielectric refractive indices, and thicknesses of dielectric materials.

Computational and Experimental Investigation of Chiral and Achiral Two‐Dimensional Organic Lead Bromide Perovskites: Octahedral Distortions and Electronic and Optical Properties

A computational investigation is presented, in conjunction with synthesis and experimental characterization, into the structural, electronic, and optical properties of layered two-dimensional organic lead bromide perovskites. Materials based on the chiral (R/S)-4-fluoro-α-methylbenzylammonium (R/S-FMBA), which have been shown to lead to bright room-temperature circularly polarized luminescence, are contrasted with the similar achiral 4-fluorobenzylammonium (FBA). Using density functional theory (DFT) with van der Waals (vdW) corrections, relaxed structures (compared with X-ray diffraction, XRD) and optical absorption spectra (compared with experiments) are studied, as well as band structure and orbital character of transitions. A Python code is developed and provided to calculate octahedral distortions and compare DFT and XRD results, finding that vdW corrections are important for accuracy and that DFT overestimates octahedral tilt angles. (FMBA) 2 PbBr 4 shows among the largest tilt angle differences (often termed Δ β ) reported, 14°–15°, indicating strong inversion symmetry-breaking, which enables its chiral emission. A large resulting Dresselhaus spin-splitting effect is found. The lowest-energy optical transitions involve the perovskite only and are polarized within the layer. This work furthers understanding of structure-property relations with applications to optoelectronics and spintronics.

Theoretical and experimental study of temperature effect on electronic and optical properties of TiO 2 : Comparing rutile and anatase

To gain fundamental understanding of the high-temperature optical gas-sensing and light-energy conversion materials, we comparatively investigate the temperature effects on the band gap and optical properties of rutile and anatase TiO 2 experimentally and theoretically. Given that the electronic structures of rutile and anatase are fundamentally different, i.e. direct band gap in rutile and indirect gap in anatase, it is not clear whether these materials exhibit different electronic structure renormalizations with temperature. Using ab initio methods, we show that the electron-phonon interaction is the dominant factor for temperature band gap renormalization compared to the thermal expansion. As a result of different contributions from the acoustic and optical phonons, the band gap is found to widen with temperature up to 300 K, and to narrow at higher temperatures.

Co doping effect on structural and optical properties of nickel oxide (NiO) thin films via spray pyrolysis

Undoped and cobalt doped nickel oxide thin films (Co:NiO) at different doping concentrations were deposited on a glass substrate at constant substrate temperature by spray pyrolysis. The doping percentage increased from 0 to 10% and the effects of doping content on structural, morphological and optical properties were explored by X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy and UV–visible spectroscopy, respectively. X-ray diffraction configurations proved the NiO thin films were polycrystalline in nature having a cubic crystal structure. The regularly used parameters such as crystallite size, micro-strain, dislocation density and texture coefficient are presented from structural data. The average crystallite size is found between 10 and 14 nm with cobalt doping (Co) concentration. The band gap energies were increased with the effect of Co doping concentration in the range between 2.10 and 2.50 eV. The various optical constants as a function of photon energy are modified with Co doping concentration.
