A comprehensive study of the radiative properties of NO—a first step toward a complete air opacity

Here, in this paper we propose a methodology to calculate the radiative properties of the diatomic molecular constituents of air, and utilize the present approach to model the radiative properties of nitrogen monoxide, NO. We also investigate the important physics involved in calculating accurate radiative quantities for air, such as the Planck and Rosseland mean opacities, and emission and absorption coefficients, as well as the couplings accounted for in rovibrational calculations. Complete active space self-consistent field multi-reference configuration interaction (CAS-MRCI) calculations were performed in order to model the NO X 2 Π, a 4 Π, b 4 Σ - , 1 2 Σ + , 2 2 Σ + , 3 2 Σ + , G 2 Σ - , B' 2 Δ, (C, B) 2 2 Π, (H', L) 3 2 Π, and 1 2 Φ adiabatic states, and calculate the respective molecular data. The γ X 2 Π - A 2 Σ + , ε X 2 Π - D 2 Σ + , β' X 2 Π - B' 2 Δ, '11 000 Å' A 2 Σ + - D 2 Σ + , 'infrared' X 2 Π - X 2 Π and X 2 Π - (C, B) 2 2 Π (δ and β) band systems are investigated in monochromatic spectra calculations, as well as the Ogawa a 4 Π - b 4 Σ - band and several other band systems. Several conclusions are drawn, such as the importance of including the Ogawa band, which has not been included in previous air radiative models or comprehensive line-list calculations, as well as the importance of performing coupled rovibrational line-list calculations in order to accurately calculate the Rosseland means. We also found that the additional band systems modeled here contribute significantly to the total Planck and Rosseland means.

Uncertainty quantification for neutrino opacities in core-collapse supernovae and neutron star mergers

We perform an extensive study of the correlations between the neutrino-nucleon inverse mean free paths (IMFPs) and the underlying equation of states (EoSs). Strong interaction uncertainties in the neutrino mean free path are investigated in different density regimes. The nucleon effective mass, the nucleon chemical potentials, and the residual interactions in the medium play an important role in determining neutrino-nucleon interactions in a density-dependent manner. Here we study how the above quantities are constrained by an EoS consistent with (i) nuclear mass measurements, (ii) proton-proton scattering phase shifts, and (iii) neutron star observations. We then study the uncertainties of both the charged current and the neutral current neutrino-nucleon inverse mean free paths due to the variation of these quantities, using the Hartree-Fock+random phase approximation method. Finally, we calculate the Pearson correlation coefficients between (i) the EoS-based quantities and the EoS-based quantities; (ii) the EoS-based quantities and the IMFPs; (iii) the IMFPs and the IMFPs. We find a strong impact of residual interactions on neutrino opacity in the spin and spin-isospin channels, which are not well constrained by current nuclear modelings.

Jets in Evolving Matter within the Opacity Expansion Approach

In a recent study [1] we have extended the opacity expansion approach to describe jet-medium interactions including medium motion effects in the context of heavy-ion collisions. We have computed color field of the in-medium sources, including the effects of the transverse field components and the energy transfer between the medium and jet. The corresponding contributions are sub-eikonal in nature, and were previously ignored in the literature. Here we discuss how our approach can be applied to describe the medium motion effects in the context of Deep Inelastic Scattering.

Solar Modeling and Opacities

In 2004, improved analyses of solar spectra resulted in a downward revision of the abundances of elements heavier than hydrogen and helium, in particular, the elements C, N, and O. Solar models evolved using these lower abundances showed discrepancies with inferences from solar oscillation observations (helioseismology). This problem has not been solved satisfactorily in the intervening 16 years. How serious/important is this problem? This talk will give an overview of how standard solar models are calculated and of the constraints from helioseismology. The talk will also present results of some attempts to change input physics or assumptions in the standard solar model, including opacity modifications, to try to resolve the discrepancies. I would like to have a discussion with the participants after the talk about which directions appear most promising to resolve the problem.

Milestone 7714 National Opacity Program: High-Fidelity Iron Data on NIF

Establish the level of reproducibility of NIF iron opacity shots, quantify to-date improvements in data quality through, e.g. background reduction, improved signal, and improved analysis methods, and formalize the approach that will be taken in the future to compare NIF data, Z data, and theory.
