Optimizing protic ionic liquid electrolyte for pre-intercalated Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene supercapacitor electrodes

Electrical double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) are of increasing importance in energy storage from renewable sources. The properties of the electrode and electrolyte materials influence the energy and power densities of EDLCs. We examined the specific capacitance and ion dynamics of a protic ionic liquid confined in pre-intercalated Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene. Our electrochemical measurements demonstrated that the creation of a protic ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-H-imidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (BuIMH-NTf2), using a mixture of ionic liquid, 1-butyl imidazole (BuIM), and salt, bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (HNTf2), in a ratio of 0.8:0.2 led to the optimal capacitance. Remarkably, quasi-elastic neutron scattering measurements revealed increased particle mobility at this composition, attributed to the more efficient accumulation of BuIMH + on the electrode surface. This deposit of additional ions results in fewer BuIM molecules away from the surface, enhancing their mobility due to reduced crowding. This composition-dependent electrochemical behavior will guide the formulation of more efficient protic ionic liquid systems, enabling faster ion transport in energy storage devices.

Maximizing ion dynamics and electrochemical performance of ionic liquid-acetonitrile electrolyte in Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene

Modification of the structure and morphology of MXene electrodes and the formulation of the electrolytes used in their supercapacitor configurations are significant factors affecting the performance of electrochemical devices. In this study, we investigated the electrochemical performance and ion dynamics of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, [EmimTFSI], ionic liquid in the presence of acetonitrile (ACN) at different concentrations in Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene supercapacitor. We found an optimum concentration of ACN, at which more cations from the ionic liquid attach to the MXene electrode surface, providing higher electrochemical performance. This higher capacitance is also associated with increased microscopic dynamics of the cation away from the pore wall. These findings give a guideline to optimize the performance of MXene-based supercapacitors using organic solvents-ionic liquid-based electrolyte systems.

Two-population Rouse models for polymer segmental dynamics in nanocomposites

Segmental dynamics of polymer chains in a model nanocomposite of poly(ethylene oxide) and silica nanoparticles (NPs) was investigated using quasielastic neutron scattering. The dynamics can be accurately described with the Rouse model. The bulklike polymer far from the NP surface behaves as the neat polymer. However, the slower polymer in the interface close to the NP surface is described either with a second Rouse population with different relaxation time or using the suppressed Rouse model. These simple two-population models accurately reproduce the experimental data, with the suppressed Rouse model describing topological constraints, on average, every 12 beads with an interfacial thickness up to 13.5 beads, and the effect of the interface extending to a layer of thickness comparable to the end-to-end distance of the polymer. This modeling provides an explanation for the observed reinforcement in PNC even at low loadings, consistent with current understanding of the relevance of the interphase.

Defects vibrations engineering for enhancing interfacial thermal transport in polymer composites

To push upper boundaries of thermal conductivity in polymer composites, understanding of thermal transport mechanisms is crucial. Despite extensive simulations, systematic experimental investigation on thermal transport in polymer composites is limited. To better understand thermal transport processes, we design polymer composites with perfect fillers (graphite) and defective fillers (graphite oxide), using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as a matrix model. Measured thermal conductivities of ~1.38 ± 0.22 W m -1 K -1 in PVA/defective filler composites is higher than those of ~0.86 ± 0.21 W m -1 K -1 in PVA/perfect filler composites, while measured thermal conductivities in defective fillers are lower than those of perfect fillers. We identify how thermal transport occurs across heterogeneous interfaces. Thermal transport measurements, neutron scattering, quantum mechanical modeling, and molecular dynamics simulations reveal that vibrational coupling between PVA and defective fillers at PVA/filler interfaces enhances thermal conductivity, suggesting that defects in polymer composites improve thermal transport by promoting this vibrational coupling.

Altered morphology and diffusivity of water confined in MXenes: Machine learning–accelerated computations combined with experiments

Nanoconfined water exhibits unique properties compared to bulk water due to limited quantities, frustrated hydrogen bonding, and surface interactions, which are fundamental for energy storage and transport applications. We integrate machine learning–accelerated ab initio molecular dynamics with x-ray diffraction (XRD) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) to systematically analyze the thermodynamic and dynamic behavior of water confined between functionalized (-F, -O, and -OH) two-dimensional (2D) Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene layers. As water intercalates between layers, the interlayer spacing exhibits layer-dependent staging characteristics. The water polarization can be flipped by the count and morphology of intercalated molecules interacting with MXene surface groups, resulting in varying electrostatic potential profiles. On the basis of interfacial electrostatic potential, hydrogen bond lifetime, and molecular orientation, we establish a linear combination of exponential model describing water diffusivity. These computational insights align well with experimental x-ray and neutron measurements, suggesting strategies for tuning water morphology and transport by tailoring MXene surface chemistry and water content for electrochemical energy storage and nanofluidic applications.

Study of the Segmental Dynamics and Ion Transport of Solid Polymer Electrolytes in the Semi-crystalline State

Solid polymer electrolytes are promising in fulfilling the requirements for a stable lithium metal anode toward higher energy and power densities. In this work, we investigate the segmental dynamics, ionic conductivity, and crystallinity of a polymer electrolyte consisting of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and lithium triflate salt, in the semi-crystalline state. Using quasi-elastic neutron scattering, the segmental dynamics of PEO chains confined between the crystalline lamellae is quantified, using Cole–Cole analysis. We show that the structural relaxation time, τ 0 , of PEO equilibrated near room temperature is six-fold longer than the same sample that had just cooled down to room temperature. This corresponds to a three-fold smaller ionic conductivity in the equilibrated condition. This work reveals that the segmental dynamics of semi-crystalline polymer electrolytes is very sensitive to thermal history. We demonstrate that quasi-elastic neutron scattering can be used to characterize the ion transport and segmental dynamics in the semi-crystalline state.

Improvements in the Sample Space for the Backscattering Silicon Spectrometer (BASIS)

The increase in neutron flux at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), currently operating at 2.0 MW proton beam power, has created new opportunities for higher-throughput neutron scattering experiments while also increasing the importance of minimizing background scattering and optimizing sample-environment operations. To address these challenges on the Backscattering Silicon Spectrometer (BA-SIS), several upgrades were developed and evaluated, including boron carbide (B₄C) masking for flat-plate sample containers, multi-cell sample holders used with a vertically translating sample stick, and an automated helium pump and purge (HPP) system for closed-cycle refrigerators. Neutron diffraction measurements demonstrate that B₄C masks reduce background scattering by 49–67%, outperforming both borated aluminum and boron nitride masks while introducing no additional Bragg reflections within the instrument’s accessible Q-range. Commissioning tests of a double-cell flat-plate sample contain-er showed no measurable crosstalk between adjacent sample compartments and con-firmed stable thermal performance, enabling multiple samples to be measured without re-peated temperature cycling. In addition, the automated HPP system provided reproducible sample-space gas handling with approximately ±1 mbar precision while reducing the need for operator intervention and supporting remote operation. Together, these developments improve signal-to-noise performance, increase experimental throughput, and enhance operational efficiency at BASIS, supporting the instrument’s continued operation under higher neutron flux conditions.
