Characterization of ORNL PSD ASIC

The performance of the ORNL ASIC and its readout system was tested with pixelated organic scintillators. We use a pixelated trans-Stilbene scintillator array from Inrad Optics and a pixelated organic glass scintillator array developed at Sandia National Laboratories to characterize the energy and timing resolutions and the pulse-shape discrimination (PSD) figure-of-merit (FoM). The results are compared to previous work in which the same metrics were measured on waveforms digitized at 250 MHz with 14-bit resolution. We found that the PSD FoM at 340 keVee of the ASIC configuration compared to waveform data varied with the scintillator type. We measured a PSD FoM of 1.12 ± 0.14 with the ASIC configuration versus 1.39 ± 0.23 with waveform data using the trans-Stilbene array. We measured a PSD FoM of 0.52 ± 0.18 with the ASIC configuration versus 1.25 ± 0.19 with waveform data using the the organic glass scintillator array. The coincidence timing resolution was measured using two 6x6x6 mm 3 cubes of trans-Stilbene. It was measured to be 805 ± 9 ps with the ASIC configuration versus 300 ps on average with waveform data.

Summary of FY 2024 A709 Code Case testing at ANL, INL and ORNL

A collaborative research and development effort in support of the Alloy 709 Code Case qualification in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section III, Division 5, High Temperature Reactors is being carried out at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), Idaho National Laboratory (INL), and Argonne National Laboratory (ANL). Key testing data for the Alloy 709 100,000-hr near-term Code Case submittal to ASME is expected to be completed by the end of 2024, with design parameters anticipated to be finalized in FY 2025. This report summarizes the testing results for three commercial heats of Alloy 709 conducted across three laboratories, reviews the current testing status, and outlines the remaining data needed to support the first Alloy 709 Code Case submittal to ASME. The Alloy 709 Code Case plan remains on schedule.

MDDC Multi-Length Scale Data Architecture Contribution Report – PNNL, INL, ANL, LANL and ORNL

This report offers a comprehensive view of data streams currently generated at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Idaho National Laboratory, Argonne National Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory set to integrate into the evolving Multi-Dimensional Data Correlation framework at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Developed by the Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies program, the Multi-Dimensional Data Correlation framework serves as a cutting-edge software to manage data relevant to advanced manufacturing and material behavior in advanced reactors. The report defines data streams, highlights their generation methods and visualization methods both for experimental and computational aspects relevant to the Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies project. A logical next step for this work is to integrate the MDDC framework into PNNL’s, INL’s, ANL’s, LANL’s and ORNL’s fabrication, experimentation, and modelling workflows. This would require setting up the MDDC framework at PNNL, INL, ANL, and LANL and integrating it into the data collection and storage for these different activities.

A Unified User-Friendly Instrument Control and Data Acquisition System for the ORNL SANS Instrument Suite

In an effort to upgrade and provide a unified and improved instrument control and data acquisition system for the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) instrument suite—biological small-angle neutron scattering instrument (Bio-SANS), the extended q-range small-angle neutron scattering diffractometer (EQ-SANS), the general-purpose small-angle neutron scattering diffractometer (GP-SANS)—beamline scientists and developers teamed up and worked closely together to design and develop a new system. We began with an in-depth analysis of user needs and requirements, covering all perspectives of control and data acquisition based on previous usage data and user feedback. Our design and implementation were guided by the principles from the latest user experience and design research and based on effective practices from our previous projects. In this article, we share details of our design process as well as prominent features of the new instrument control and data acquisition system. The new system provides a sophisticated Q-Range Planner to help scientists and users plan and execute instrument configurations easily and efficiently. The system also provides different user operation interfaces, such as wizard-type tool Panel Scan, a Scripting Tool based on Python Language, and Table Scan, all of which are tailored to different user needs. The new system further captures all the metadata to enable post-experiment data reduction and possibly automatic reduction and provides users with enhanced live displays and additional feedback at the run time. We hope our results will serve as a good example for developing a user-friendly instrument control and data acquisition system at large user facilities.

Sensitivity/Uncertainty Comparison Study Involving IRSN, LANL, and ORNL Tools to Support Validation

Under a DOE Nuclear Criticality Safety Program (NCSP) task involving Analytical Methods, three Laboratories collaborated in a comparison of results obtained from Sensitivity/Uncertainty (S/U) packages relevant to validation of transport codes. The task involves Institut de Radioprotection et de Sûreté Nucléaire (IRSN), Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) comparing results of MORET 5/MACSENS V3.0, MCNP6.2/Whisper-1.1, and SCALE 6.2.3/TSUNAMI/USLSTATS respectively. All Monte Carlo transport code results utilize nuclear data from ENDF/B-VII.1 evaluation. This study examines five cases from the International Handbook of Evaluated Criticality Safety Benchmark Experiments (ICSBEP Handbook) selected as application models: IEU-MET- FAST-002-001, LEU-COMP-THERM-001-001, LEU-SOL-THERM-004-001, MIX-COMP- THERM-001-001, and U233-SOL-THERM-001-001. This is a continuation of a previous study to examine Pu and HEU cases: HEU-MET-FAST-013-001, HEU-SOL-THERM-001-008, PU-MET- FAST-022-001, and PU-SOL-THERM-001-001. Ultimately, comparison is made between Upper Subcritical Limits (USLs) obtained using each code package for each application case. Since differences exist in whether packages take into account margin of subcriticality (MOS), the USL is computed using only bias and bias uncertainty, also known as the calculational margin (CM) in ANSI/ANS-8.24. Results comparison appears to show that benchmark selection has a greater influence on the USL than the method used for calculation of bias and bias uncertainty.
